| 1 | Deep learning analysis of defect and phase evolution during electron beam-induced transformations in WS_(2)显示文摘Recent advances in scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM)allow the real-time visualization of solid-state transformations in materials,including those induced by an electron beam and temperature,with atomic resolution.However,despite the ever-expanding capabilities for high-resolution data acquisition,the inferred information about kinetics and thermodynamics of the process,and single defect dynamics and interactions is minimal.This is due to the inherent limitations of manual ex situ analysis of the collected volumes of data.To circumvent this problem,we developed a deep-learning framework for dynamic STEM imaging that is trained to find the lattice defects and apply it for mapping solid state reactions and transformations in layered WS_(2).The trained deep-learning model allows extracting thousands of lattice defects from raw STEM data in a matter of seconds,which are then classified into different categories using unsupervised clustering methods.We further expanded our framework to extract parameters of diffusion for sulfur vacancies and analyzed transition probabilities associated with switching between different configurations of defect complexes consisting of Mo dopant and sulfur vacancy,providing insight into pointdefect dynamics and reactions.This approach is universal and its application to beam-induced reactions allows mapping chemical transformation pathways in solids at the atomic level. | Artem Maksov Ondrej Dyck Kai Wang Kai Xiao David B.Geohegan Bobby G.Sumpter Rama K.Vasudevan Stephen Jesse Sergei V.Kalinin Maxim Ziatdinov | 2019 | npj Computational Materials2019,,1: | 11 |
| 2 | Learning surface molecular structures via machine vision显示文摘Recent advances in high resolution scanning transmission electron and scanning probe microscopies have allowed researchers to perform measurements of materials structural parameters and functional properties in real space with a picometre precision.In many technologically relevant atomic and/or molecular systems,however,the information of interest is distributed spatially in a non-uniform manner and may have a complex multi-dimensional nature.One of the critical issues,therefore,lies in being able to accurately identify(‘read out’)all the individual building blocks in different atomic/molecular architectures,as well as more complex patterns that these blocks may form,on a scale of hundreds and thousands of individual atomic/molecular units.Here we employ machine vision to read and recognize complex molecular assemblies on surfaces.Specifically,we combine Markov random field model and convolutional neural networks to classify structural and rotational states of all individual building blocks in molecular assembly on the metallic surface visualized in high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy measurements.We show how the obtained full decoding of the system allows us to directly construct a pair density function—a centerpiece in analysis of disorderproperty relationship paradigm—as well as to analyze spatial correlations between multiple order parameters at the nanoscale,and elucidate reaction pathway involving molecular conformation changes.The method represents a significant shift in our way of analyzing atomic and/or molecular resolved microscopic images and can be applied to variety of other microscopic measurements of structural,electronic,and magnetic orders in different condensed matter systems. | Maxim Ziatdinov Artem Maksov Sergei V.Kalinin | 2017 | npj Computational Materials2017,,1: | 9 |

| 8 | COPEX:co-evolutionary crystal structure prediction algorithm for complex systems显示文摘Crystal structure prediction has been widely used to accelerate the discovery of new materials in recent years.Up to this day,it remains a challenge to predict the stable stoichiometries and structures of ternary or more complex systems due to the explosive increase of the size of the chemical and configurational space.Numerous novel materials with a series of unique characteristics are expected to be found in this virgin territory while new algorithms to predict crystal structures in complex systems are urgently called for.Inspired by co-evolution in biology,here we propose a co-evolutionary algorithm,which we name COPEX,and which is based on the well-known evolutionary algorithm USPEX.Within this proposed algorithm,a few USPEX calculations for ternary systems and multiple for energetically-favored pseudobinary or fixed-composition systems are carried out in parallel,and coevolution is achieved by sharing structural information on the fittest individuals among different USPEX sub-processes during the joint evolution.We have applied the algorithm to W–Cr–B,Mg–Si–O,and Hf–Ta–C,three very different systems,and many ternary compounds have been identified.Our results clearly demonstrate that the COPEX algorithm combines efficiency and reliability even for complex systems. | Xiangyang Liu Haiyang Niu Artem R.Oganov | 2021 | npj Computational Materials2021,,1: | 3 |
| 9 | Synthesis ofγ-MnOOH nanorods by successive ionic layer deposition method and their capacitive performance显示文摘It was first shown in the present study that layers of manganite γ-Mn OOH can be deposited on the surface of a substrate by its multiple successive treatment by the solutions of MnSO_4 and K_2S_2O_8 using the successive ionic layer deposition(SILD) technique. Their analysis was carried out by the XRD, XPS, FT-IR,SEM and EDX methods. It has shown that the synthesized layers are formed by aggregates of nanorods up to 80–100 nm in length and approximately 8–10 nm in diameter. A probable sequence of chemical reactions leading to the formation of a layer of the given morphology is suggested. Testing of performance of supercapacitors with nickel foam electrodes incorporating the γ-Mn OOH layers in the 0.1 M KOH electrolyte at 1 A/g indicated the specific capacitance equal to 1120 F/g. | 10 | Surface bioactivation of PEEK by neutral atom beam technology显示文摘Polyetheretherketone(PEEK)is an alternative to metallic implants and a material of choice in many applications,including orthopedic,spinal,trauma,and dental.While titanium(Ti)and Ti-alloys are widely used in many intraosseous implants due to its biocompatibility and ability to osseointegrate,negatives include stiffness which contributes to shear stress,radio-opacity,and Ti-sensitivity.Many surgeons prefer to use PEEK due to its biocompatibility,similar elasticity to bone,and radiolucency,however,due to its inert properties,it fails to fully integrate with bone.Accelerated Neutral Atom Beam(ANAB)technology has been successfully employed to demonstrate enhanced bioactivity of PEEK both in vitro and in vivo.In this study,we further characterize surfaces of PEEK modified by ANAB as well as elucidate attachment and genetic effects of dental pulp stem cells(DPSC)exposed to these surfaces.ANAB modification resulted in decreased contact angle at 72.9±4.5°as compared to 92.4±8.5°for control(p<0.01)and a decreased average surface roughness,however with a nano-textured surface profile.ANAB treatment also increased the ability of DPSC attachment and proliferation with considerable genetic differences showing earlier progression towards osteogenic differentiation.This surface modification is achieved without adding a coating or changing the chemical composition of the PEEK material.Taken together,we show that ANAB processing of PEEK surface enhances the bioactivity of implantable medical devices without an additive or a coating. | Joseph Khoury Irina Selezneva Sergei Pestov Vadim Tarassov Artem Ermakov Andrey Mikheev Mikhail Lazov Sean R.Kirkpatrick Dmitry Shashkov Alexandre Smolkov | 2019 | Bioactive Materials2019,4,1: | 2 |
| 11 | Model acupuncture point:Bone marrow-derived stromal stem cells are moved by a weak electromagnetic field显示文摘AIM To show the existence of a structural formative role of magnetic fields(MFs) with respect to biological objects by using our proposed model of an acupoint.METHODS We introduced a magnetised 10-100 μT metal rod(needle) into culture dishes with a negatively charged working surface and observed during 24 h how cells were arranged by MFs and by electrical fields(EFs) when attached. Rat and human bone marrow-derived stromal stem cells(r BMSCs and h BMSCs), human nonadherent mononuclear blood cells, NCTCs and A172 cells, and Escherichia coli(E. coli) were evaluated. The dish containing BMSCs was defined as the model of an acupoint. r BMSCs proliferative activity affected by the needle was investigated. For investigating electromagnetic field structures, we used the gas discharge visualisation(GDV) method.RESULTS During 24 h of incubation in 50-mm culture dishes, BMSCs or the nonadherent cells accumulated into a central heap in each dish. BMSCs formed a torus(central ring) with an inner diameter of approximately10 mm only upon the introduction of the needle in the centre of the dish. The cells did not show these effects in 35- or 90-mm culture dishes or hydrophobic dishes or rectangular cuvettes. NCTCs and A172 cells showed unstable the effects and only up to two weeks after thawing. Moreover, we observed that the appearance of these effects depended on the season. In winter, BMSCs showed no the effects. GDV experiments revealed that the resonant annular illumination gradually formed from 10 to 18-20 s in polar solutions with and without cell suspension of BMSCs, NCTCs and E. coli when using circular 50-mm dishes, stimulation at 115 V and switching of the electrode poles at 1 kH z. All these data demonstrate the resonant nature of the central ring. | 12 | Performance of Pr_(2)(Ni,Cu)O_(4+δ) electrodes in protonic ceramic electrochemical cells with unseparated and separated gas spaces显示文摘The Ln_(2)NiO_(4+δ)-based layered phases have attracted much attention as components for high-performance protonic ceramic fuel cells(PCFCs)and electrolysis cells(PCECs)enabling energy conversion with good efficiency and low pollution.The present paper aims at rationally engineering the Cu-doped Pr_(2)NiO_(4+δ)materials and analysing their electrode behaviour for reversible protonic ceramic cells operating in both PCFC and PCEC modes.Complex oxides of Pr_(2)Ni_(1-x)CuxO_(4+δ)(x=0,0.1,0.2 and 0.3)were synthesised using the citrate-nitrate method.The obtained materials were characterised considering their crystalline structures,as well as thermal,thermomechanical and electrotransport properties.A special interest was focused on the quality of an electrode/electrolyte interface governing the electrochemical performance of the cells fabricated.It is shown that a copper doping of x=0.2 has a positive impact on the thermomechanical compatibility of the Ba(Ce,Zr)O_(3)-based electrolytes,providing a better adhesion to these electrolytes at low-temperature sintering and resulting in a decrease of the polarisation resistance of the air electrodes.A reversible protonic ceramic cell demonstrates a power density of~340 m W cm^(-2) and a hydrogen output flux of~3.8 ml cm^(-2) min^(-1) at 750℃.The presented results propose modernised alkaline-earth-element-free and cobalt-free electrodes that can be successfully used in the electrochemical cells based on the-state-of-the-art proton-conducting electrolytes. | Artem P.Tarutin Yulia G.Lyagaeva Aleksey I.Vylkov Maxim Yu.Gorshkov Gennady K.Vdovin Dmitry A.Medvedev | 2021 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2021,,34: | 2 |
| 13 | Relation between basin morphometric features and dynamic characteristics of debris flows——a case study in Siberia, Russia显示文摘Extreme and prolonged rainfall in the Tunka Ridge caused several debris flows in the vicinity of the Arshan village(Siberia, Russia) on June 28, 2014. These debris flows, in spite of similar geological conditions, had different velocity, peak discharge and alluvial fan volume values. The flow velocity was from 3.5 m/s to 19.6 m/s, the peak discharge ranged from 63 m3/s to 13566 m3/s, and the alluvial fan volume varied from 4.13×103 to 8.45×105 m3. Such a great range of values is due to the morphometric parameters of the debris flow basins. The article deals with the influence of morphometric parameters of debris flow basins, such as the basin area, the average slope, Melton ratio, relief ratio on the debris flow velocity, peak discharge and volume of alluvial fans. In this debris flow event the average values of slope angle and total basin relief of the debris flow basins did not affect the values of debris flow velocity, peak discharge and alluvial fan volume. The highest correlations were observed with the debris flow basin area that was connected with the water inflow volume into the debris flow basins during the rainfall. | 14 | Recent advances in laser self-injection locking to high-Q microresonators显示文摘The stabilization and manipulation of laser frequency by means of an external cavity are nearly ubiquitously used in fundamental research and laser applications. While most of the laser light transmits through the cavity, in the presence of some back-scattered light from the cavity to the laser, the self-injection locking effect can take place, which locks the laser emission frequency to the cavity mode of similar frequency. The self-injection locking leads to dramatic reduction of laser linewidth and noise. Using this approach, a common semiconductor laser locked to an ultrahigh-Q microresonator can obtain sub-Hertz linewidth, on par with state-of-the-art fiber lasers. Therefore it paves the way to manufacture high-performance semiconductor lasers with reduced footprint and cost. Moreover, with high laser power, the optical nonlinearity of the microresonator drastically changes the laser dynamics, offering routes for simultaneous pulse and frequency comb generation in the same microresonator. Particularly, integrated photonics technology, enabling components fabricated via semiconductor CMOS process, has brought increasing and extending interest to laser manufacturing using this method.
