A three-dimensional variational ocean data assimilation system:Scheme and preliminary results显示文摘A new 3DVAR-based Ocean Variational Analysis System (OVALS) is developed. OVALS is capable of assimilating in situ sea water temperature and salinity observations and satellite altimetry data. As a component of OVALS, a new variational scheme is proposed to assimilate the sea surface height data. This scheme considers both the vertical correlation of background errors and the nonlinear temperature-salinity relationship which is derived from the generalization of the linear balance constraints to the nonlinear in the 3DVAR. By this scheme, the model temperature and salinity fields are directly adjusted from the altimetry data. Additionally, OVALS can assimilate the temperature and salinity profiles from the ARGO floats which have been implemented in recent years and some temperature and salinity data such as from expendable bathythermograph, moored ocean buoys, etc. A 21-year assimilation experiment is carried out by using OVALS and the Tropical Pacific circulation model. The results show that the assimilation system may effectively improve the estimations of temperature and salinity by assimilating all kinds of observations. Moreover, the root mean square errors of temperature and salinity in the upper depth less than 420 m reach 0.63℃ and 0.34 psu. | ZHU Jiang1,2, ZHOU Guangqing1, YAN Changxiang1, FU Weiwei1 & YOU Xiaobao1,3 1. | 6 | THEORY OF DIELECTRIC ELASTOMERS显示文摘In response to a stimulus,a soft material deforms, and the deformation provides a function. We call such a material a soft active material (SAM).This review focuses on one class of soft active materials: dielectric elastomers. When a membrane of a dielectric elastomer is subject to a voltage through its thickness, the membrane reduces thickness and expands area, possibly straining over 100%.The dielectric elastomers are being developed as transducers for broad applications, including soft robots, adaptive optics,Braille displays, and electric generators. This paper reviews the theory of dielectric elastomers, developed within continuum mechanics and thermodynamics, and motivated by molecular pictures and empirical observations. The the-ory couples large deformation and electric potential, and describes nonlinear and nonequilibrium behavior, such as electromechanical instability and viscoelasticity. The theory enables the finite element method to simulate transducers of realistic configurations, predicts the efficiency of elec-tromechanical energy conversion, and suggests alternative routes to achieve giant voltage-induced deformation. It is hoped that the theory will aid in the creation of materials and devices. | Zhigang Suo (School of Engineering and Applied Sciences,Kavli Institute for Nanobio Science and Technology,Harvard University,Cambridge,MA 02138,USA) | 2010 | Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica2010,23,6: | 37

Invasive mechanism and management strategy of Bemisia tabaci(Gennadius) biotype B:Progress report of 973 Program on invasive alien species in China显示文摘Bemisia tabaci(Gennadius) biotype B,called a 'superbug',is one of the most harmful biotypes of this species complex worldwide. In this report, the invasive mechanism and management of B.tabaci biotype B,based on our 5-year studies, are presented.Six B.tabaci biotypes,B,Q,ZHJ1,ZHJ2,ZHJ3 and FJ1,have been identified in China.Biotype B dominates the other biotypes in many regions of the country.Genetic diversity in biotype B might be induced by host plant, geographical conditions,and/or insecticidal application. The activities of CarE(carboxylesterase) and GSTs(glutathione-S-transferase) in biotype B reared on cucumber and squash were greater than on other host plants, which might have increased its resistance to insecticides. The higher activities of detoxification enzymes in biotype B might be induced by the secondary metabolites in host plants.Higher adaptive ability of biotype B adults to adverse conditions might be linked to the expression of heat shock protein genes. The indigenous B.tabaci biotypes were displaced by the biotype B within 225 d.The asymmetric mating interactions and mutualism between biotype B and begomoviruses via its host plants speed up widespread invasion and displacement of other biotypes.B.tabaci biotype B displaced Trialeurodes vaporariorum(Westwood) after 4-7 generations under glasshouse conditions.Greater adaptive ability of the biotype B to adverse conditions and its rapid population increase might be the reasons of its successful displacement of T.vaporariorum.Greater ability of the biotype B to switch to different host plants may enrich its host plants, which might enable it to better compete with T.vaporariorum.Native predatory natural enemies possess greater ability to suppress B.tabaci under field conditions. The kairomones in the 3rd and 4th instars of biotype B may provide an important stimulus in host searching and location by its parasitoids. The present results provide useful information in explaining the mechanisms of genetic diversity, evolution and molecular eco-adaptation of biotype B.Furthermore,it provides a base for sustainable management of B.tabaci using biological and ecological measures. | WAN FangHao1,ZHANG GuiFen1,LIU ShuSheng2,LUO Chen3,CHU Dong4,ZHANG YouJun4,ZANG LianSheng2,JIU Min2,Lü ZhiChuang1,CUI XuHong1,ZHANG LiPing4,ZHANG Fan3,ZHANG QingWen5,LIU WanXue1,LIANG Pei5,LEI ZhongRen1 & ZHANG YongJun1 1 State Key Laboratory for Biology of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests,Institute of Plant Protection,Chinese Acadeny of Agriculture Sciences,Beijing 100094,China 2 Institute of Applied Entomology,Zhejiang University,Hangzhou 310029,China 3 Institute of Plant and Environment Protection,Beijing Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences,Beijing 100089,China 4 Institute of Vegetables and Flowers,Chinese Acadeny of Agricullare Sciences,Beijing 100081,China 5 Department of Entomology,China Agriculture University,Beijing 100094,China | 2009 | Science China(Life Sciences)2009,52,1: | 30
Effect of Cultivation on Spatial Distribution of Nematode Trophic Groups in Black Soil显示文摘Geostatistics combined with GIS was applied to assess the spatial distribution of nematode trophic groups following two contrasting soil uses in the black soil region of Northeast China. Two plots, one with fallow for 12 years and the other cultivated, were marked on regular square grids with 2-m spacing. Soil samples were collected from each sampling point, nematodes were extracted from these samples and classified into four trophic groups: bacterivores, fungivores, plant parasites, and omnivores/predators. The numbers of total nematodes and trophic groups analyzed had normal distributions on both fallow and cultivated plots. The absolute abundances of total nematodes and trophic groups were observed to be much more homogeneous on cultivated plot than on fallow one. Geostatistical analysis showed that the densities of total nematodes and trophic groups on both fallow and cultivated plots exhibited spatial dependence at the sampled scale and their experimental semivariograms were adjusted to a spherical or exponential model, except those of bacterivores and fungivores on cultivated plot. The spatial distribution of nematode trophic groups was found to be different for the two land uses, indicating that cultivation changed the native condition for soil nematode activities. | LIANG WENJU, LI QI, JIANG YONG, CHEN WENBO and WEN DAZHONGShenyang Experimental Station of Ecology, Institute of Applied Ecology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016 (China) | 2003 | Pedosphere2003,13,2: | 29
Transition prediction of a hypersonic boundary layer over a cone at small angle of attack——with the improvement of e^N method显示文摘The problem of transition prediction for hypersonic boundary layers over a sharp cone has been studied in this work. The Mach number of the oncoming flow is 6, the cone half-angle is 5o,and the angle of attack is 1o. The conventional eN method is used, but the transition location so obtained is obviously incorrect. The reason is that in the conventional method, only the amplifying waves are taken into account, while in fact, for different meridians the decay processes of the disturbances before they begin to grow are different. Based on our own previous work, new interpretation and essential improvement for the eN method are proposed. Not only the amplification process but also the decay process is considered. The location, where by linear stability theory, the amplitude of disturbance wave is amplified from its initial small value to 1%, is considered to be the transition location. The new result for transition prediction thus obtained is found to be fairly satisfactory. It is also indicated that for the calculation of base flow, boundary layer equations can be used for a small angle of attack. Its computational cost is much smaller than those for DNS. | SU CaiHong1 & ZHOU Heng1,2 1 Department of Mechanics, Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072, China 2 Liu-Hui Center of Applied Mathematics, Nankai University and Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072, China | 2009 | Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2009,52,1: | 26
The mechanism of breakdown in laminar-turbulent transition of a supersonic boundary layer on a flat plate-temporal mode显示文摘Temporal mode direction numerical simulation has been done for the transition of a supersonic boundary layer on a flat plate with Mach number 4.5. Analysis of the result showed that during the breakdown process in laminar-turbulent transition, the mechanism causing the mean flow profile to evolve swiftly from laminar to turbulent was that the modification of mean flow profile by the disturbances, when they became larger, led to a remarkable change of its stability characteristics. Though the most unstable T-S wave was of second mode for laminar flow, the first mode waves played the key role in the breakdown process in laminar-turbulent transition. | HUANG Zhangfeng 1, CAO Wei 1,2 & ZHOU Heng 1,2 1. | 14 | Hierarchical linear regression models for conditional quantiles显示文摘The quantile regression has several useful features and therefore is gradually developing into a comprehensive approach to the statistical analysis of linear and nonlinear response models, but it cannot deal effectively with the data with a hierarchical structure. In practice, the existence of such data hierarchies is neither accidental nor ignorable,it is a common phenomenon. To ignore this hierarchical data structure risks overlooking the importance of group effects, and may also render many of the traditional statistical analysis techniques used for studying data relationships invalid. On the other hand, the hierarchical models take a hierarchical data structure into account and have also many applications in statistics, ranging from overdispersion to constructing min-max estimators. However, the hierarchical models are virtually the mean regression, therefore, they cannot be used to characterize the entire conditional distribution of a dependent variable given high-dimensional covariates.Furthermore, the estimated coefficient vector (marginal effects)is sensitive to an outlier observation on the dependent variable. In this article,a new approach, which is based on the Gauss-Seidel iteration and taking a full advantage of the quantile regression and hierarchical models,is developed. On the theoretical front,we also consider the asymptotic properties of the new method, obtaining the simple conditions for an n1/2-convergence and an asymptotic normality. We also illustrate the use of the technique with the real educational data which is hierarchical and how the results can be explained. | TIAN Maozai & CHEN Gemai School of Statistics, Renmin University of China, Beijing 100872, China and Center for Applied Statistics, Renmin University of China, Beijing 100872, China Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Calgary, Canada | 2006 | Science China Mathematics2006,49,12: | 20
TRANSITION OF CONVECTIVE PATTERNS IN A RECTANGULAR CELL显示文摘In this paper our interest is focussed on the behavior in the transition of the Traveling Wave (TW) convective patterns along the nonlinear branch in a rectangular cell of Γ=12 for ψ=-0.11. Our numerical simulations were performed by solving the two-dimensional hydrodynamic equations using the SIMPLE method. Three types of convection patterns appearing in the nonlinear branch of the bifurcation diagram were observed. In particular, the undulation TW state in the rectangular cell was obtained, and the hysteresis in the transition from the TW State to the Stationary Overturning Convection (SOC) was verified. | Ning Li-zhong Institute of Hydraulic Engineering, Xi’an University of Technology, Xi’an 710048, China Department of Engineering, Nitto Co. | 16 | Fractionation of heavy metals in shallow marine sediments from Jinzhou Bay,China显示文摘This work investigated the distribution and speciation of Cd, Cu, Pb, Fe and Mn in the shallow sediments of Jinzhou Bay, Northeast China, which has been heavily contaminated by nonferrous smelting activities. The concentrations of Cd, Cu and Pb in sediments were found to be 100, 13 and 7 times, respectively, being higher than the national guideline (GB 18668-2002). Sequential extraction test showed that 39%-61% of Cd were exchangeable fractions, indicating that Cd in the sediments posed a high risk to local environments. While Cu and Pb were at moderate risk levels. According to the relationships between percentage of metal speciation and total metal concentration, it was concluded that the distributions of Cd, Cu and Pb in some geochemical fractions were dynamic in the process of pollutants migration and the stability of metals in sediments of Jinzhou Bay decreased in the order of Pb > Cu > Cd. | Shaofeng Wang, Yongfeng Jia, Shuying Wang, Xin Wang, He Wang, Zhixi Zhao, Bingzhu LiuKey Laboratory of Pollution Ecology and Environmental Engineering, Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China. | 2010 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2010,22,1: | 20

Multislice CT angiography in coronary artery disease: Technical developments, radiation dose and diagnostic value显示文摘Multislice computed tomography (CT) angiography has been increasingly used in the detection and diagnosis of coronary artery disease because of its rapid technical evolution from the early generation of 4-slice CT scanners to the latest models such as 64-slice, 256-slice and 320-slice CT scanners. Technical developments of multislice CT imaging enable improved diagnostic value in the detection of coronary artery disease, and this indicates that multislice CT can be used as a reliable lessinvasive alternative to invasive coronary angiography in selected patients. In addition, multislice CT angiography has played a significant role in the prediction of disease progression and cardiac events. Despite promising results reported in the literature, multislice CT has the disadvantage of having a high radiation dose which could contribute to the radiation-induced malignancy. A variety of strategies have been currently undertaken to reduce the radiation dose associated with multislice CT coronary angiography while in the meantime acquiring diagnostic images. In this article, the author will review the technical developments, radiation dose associated with multislice CT coronary angiography, and strategies to reduce radiation dose. The diagnostic and prognostic value of multislice CT angiography in coronary artery disease is briefly discussed, and future directions of multislice CT angiography in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease will also be highlighted. | Zhonghua Sun, Discipline of Medical Imaging, Department of Imaging and Applied Physics, Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia 6845, Australia | 2010 | World Journal of Cardiology2010,2,10: | 19
Arbitrarily long distance quantum communication using inspection and power insertion显示文摘The biggest obstacle for long distance quantum communication is the channel loss and the channel noise on photons. In this paper,a method to solve this problem was analyzed using inspection and power insertion (IPI). It is proved that quantum communication may be established over arbitrarily long distance using this technology. The amount of resources required is a polynomial function of the dis-tance. IPI is proposed as a general technique to prolong quantum secure direct communication where secret messages are transmitted directly over a quantum channel. | WANG WanYing1,2,WANG Chuan1,2,ZHANG GuangYu1,3 & LONG GuiLu1,2 1 Department of Physics,Tsinghua University,Beijing 100084,China 2 Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology,Tsinghua University,Beijing 100084,China 3 College of Applied Science,Harbin University of Science and Technology,Harbin 150080,China | 2009 | Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,1: | 19
