| 3 | Protective effect of naringenin on acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis in rats显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the ameliorative effect of naringenin(NG)during ulcerative colitis(UC)in rats.METHODS:Rats were treated with three different doses(25,50 and 100 mg/kg per day)of NG and a single dose of mesalazine(MES,300 mg/kg per day)for seven days prior to ulcerative colitis induction by4%acetic acid(AA).Twenty four hours after AA rectal administration,animals were scarified and the colonic tissues were dissected.Colonic mucus content was estimated using Alcian blue dye binding technique.In colon tissues,levels of total glutathione sulphadryls(T-GSH),non-protein sulphadryls(NP-SH)and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS)were evaluated.The activities of the antioxidant enzymes,catalase(CAT)and superoxide dismutase(SOD)were measured.Concentrations of nucleic acids(DNA and RNA)and total protein were also estimated in colon tissues.Colonic levels of tumor necrosis factor-(TNF-),interleukin-1(IL-1),interleukin-6(IL-6),prostaglandin E2(PGE2)and nitric oxide(NO)were estimated.In cross section of colitis tissue the histopathological changes were observed.RESULTS:Colonic mucus content was decreased in AA compared to controls(587.09±65.59 mg/kg vs941.78±68.41 mg/kg,P<0.001).AA administration markedly reduced T-GSH(5.25±0.37 nmol/L vs 3.04±0.24 nmol/L,P<0.01),NP-SH(3.16±0.04 nmol/L vs 2.16±0.30 nmol/L,P<0.01),CAT(6.77±0.40 U/mg vs 3.04±0.2 U/mg,P<0.01)and SOD(3.10±0.11U/mg vs 1.77±0.18 U/mg,P<0.01)while TBARS,TNF-,IL-1,IL-6,PGE2 and NO levels(15.09±3.84nmol/L vs 59.90±16.34 nmol/L,P<0.01;113.56±1.91 pg/mg vs 134.24±4.77 pg/mg,P<0.01;209.20±36.38 pg/mg vs 422.19±31.47 pg/mg,P<0.01;250.83±25.09 pg/mg vs 638.58±115.9 pg/mg,P<0.01;248.19±36.98 pg/mg vs 541.74±58.34 pg/mg,P<0.01 and 81.26±2.98 mmol/g vs 101.90±10.73 mmol/g,P<0.001)were increased in colon of rats with UC compared controls respectively.Naringenin supplementation,significantly and dose dependently increased the colonic mucus content.The elevated TBARS levels were significantly decreased(39.35±5.86nmol/L,P<0.05;26.74±3.17 nmol/L,P<0.01 nmol/L and 17.74±2.69 nmol/L,P<0.01)compared to AA(59.90±16.34 nmol/L)group while the decreased levels of T-GSH and NP-SH and activities of CAT and SOD found increased by NG treatments in dose dependent manner.The decreased values of nucleic acids and total protein in AA group were also significantly(P<0.01)increased in all three NG supplemented groupsrespectively.NG pretreatment inhibited the TNF-levels(123.76±3.76 pg/mg,122.62±3.41 pg/mg and121.51±2.61 pg/mg vs 134.24±4.78 pg/mg,P<0.05)compared to AA group,respectively.Interleukins,IL-1 and IL-6 levels were also decreased in NG50+AA(314.37±16.31 pg/mg and 292.58±23.68 pg/mg,P<0.05)and NG100+AA(416.72±49.62 pg/mg and 407.96±43.87 pg/mg,P<0.05)when compared to AA(352.46±8.58 pg/mg and 638.58±115.98pg/mg)group.Similar decrease(P<0.05)was seen in PGE2and NO values when compared to AA group.The group pretreated with MES,as a reference drug,showed significant(P<0.01)protection against the changes induced in colon tissue by AA administration respectively.CONCLUSION:In present study,NG produced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects demonstrating protective effect in inflammatory bowel disease. | Salim S Al-Rejaie Hatem M Abuohashish Maher M Al-Enazi Abdullah H Al-Assaf Mihir Y Parmar Mohammed M Ahmed | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,34: | 20 |

| 7 | The effects of the rotor-stator interaction on unsteady pressure pulsation and radial force in a centrifugal pump显示文摘An unsteady numerical analysis has been conducted to study the strong interaction between impeller blade and volute tongue of a centrifugal pump. The 3-D-URANS equations were solved with the shear stress transport turbulence model for a wide range of flow rates. These unsteady interactions are mostly related to the unsteady radial force due to an imbalance in the pressure field at the impeller periphery. This force represents dynamic load that are one of the most important sources of vibration and hydraulic noise. Based on this phenomenon, this work analyzes and gives a more realistic prediction of the pressure fluctuation and the radial force during steady and unsteady calculation by considering the effect of the change in the pump operating point. Actually, the pressure fluctuations in the impeller and the volute were recorded by mounting nine monitoring points on the impeller and volute casing. The results of the existing analysis has proven that the pressure fluctuation is periodic due to the relative position of impeller blade to volute tongue. The characteristics of the time domain and frequency domain of the pressure pulsation were analyzed under different coupling conditions. Fast Fourier transform was performed to obtain the spectra of pressure pulsation. Besides, the steady and unsteady forces were calculated around the impeller periphery to fully characterize the pump behavior. | 8 | Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and micro-RNA in the diagnosis of hepatic fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C virus显示文摘BACKGROUND Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging has shown promise in the detection and quantification of hepatic fibrosis. In addition, the liver has numerous endogenous micro-RNAs(miRs) that play important roles in the regulation of biological processes such as cell proliferation and hepatic fibrosis.AIM To assess diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and miRs in diagnosing and staging hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C.METHODS This prospective study included 208 patients and 82 age-and sex-matched controls who underwent diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen, miR profiling, and liver biopsy. Pathological scoring was classified according to the METAVIR scoring system. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and miR were calculated and correlated with pathological scoring.RESULTS The ADC value decreased significantly with the progression of fibrosis, from controls(F0) to patients with early fibrosis(F1 and F2) to those with late fibrosis(F3 and F4)(median 1.92, 1.53, and 1.25 × 10^(-3) mm^2/s, respectively)(P = 0.001).The cut-off ADC value used to differentiate patients from controls was 1.83 × 10^(-3) mm^2/s with an area under the curve(AUC) of 0.992. Combining ADC and miR-200 b revealed the highest AUC(0.995) for differentiating patients from controls with an accuracy of 96.9%. The cut-off ADC used to differentiate early fibrosis from late fibrosis was 1.54 × 10^(-3) mm^2/s with an AUC of 0.866. The combination of ADC and miR-200 b revealed the best AUC(0.925) for differentiating early fibrosis from late fibrosis with an accuracy of 80.2%. | 9 | Photosynthetic, Physiological and Biochemical Responses of Tomato Plants to Polyethylene Glycol-Induced Water Deficit显示文摘Polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000)-induced water deficit causes physiological as well as biochemical changes in plants. The present study reports on the results of such changes in hydroponically grown tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Nikita). Plants were subjected to moderate and severe levels of water stress (i.e. water potentials in the nutrient solution of-0.51 and -1.22 MPa, respectively).Water stress markedly affected the parameters of gas exchange. Net photosynthetic rate (Pn) decreased with the induction of water stress. Accordingly, a decrease in the transpiration rate (E) was observed. The ratio of both (Pn/E) resulted in a decrease in water use efficiency. One of the possible reasons for the reduction in Pn is structural damage to the thylakoids, which affects the photosynthetic transport of electrons. This was indicated by an increase in non-photochemical quenching and a reduction in the quantum yield of photosystem Ⅱ. Furthermore, a decrease in both leaf water potential and leaf osmotic potential was observed, which resulted in a significant osmotic adjustment during stress conditions. Analysis of the physiological responses was complemented with a study on changes in proline content. In stressed plants, a 10-fold increase in proline content was detected compared with control plants. | 11 | Six Minute Walk Test to assess functional capacity in chronic liver disease patients显示文摘AIM: To examine the utility of Six Minute Walk Test (6MWT) in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). METHODS: Two hundred and fifty subjects between the ages of 18 and 80 (mean 47) years performed 6MWT and the Six Minute Walk Distance (6MWD) was measured. RESULTS: The subjects were categorized into four groups. Group A (n = 45) healthy subjects (control); group B (n = 49) chronic hepatitis B patients; group C (n = 54) chronic hepatitis C patients; group D (n = 98) liver cirrhosis patients. The four groups differed in terms of 6MWDs (P < 0.001). The longest distance walked was 421 ± 47 m by group A, then group B (390 ± 53 m), group C (357 ± 72 m) and group D (306 ± 111 m). The 6MWD correlated with age (r = -0.482, P < 0.01), hemoglobin (r = +0.373, P < 0.001) and albumin (r = +0.311, P < 0.001) levels. The Child-Pugh classification was negatively correlated with the 6MWD in cirrhosis (group D) patients (r = -0.328, P < 0.01). At the end of a 12 mo follow-up period, 15 of the 98 cirrhosis patients had died from disease complications. The 6MWD for the surviving cirrhotic patients was longer than for non-survivors (317 ± 101 vs 245 ± 145 m, P = 0.021; 95% CI 11-132). The 6MWD was found to be an independent predictor of survival (P = 0.024). CONCLUSION: 6MWT is a useful tool for assessing physical function in CLD patients. | 12 | Diagnostic non-invasive model of large risky esophageal varices in cirrhotic hepatitis C virus patients显示文摘AIM To build a diagnostic non-invasive model for screening of large varices in cirrhotic hepatitis C virus(HCV) patients. METHODS This study was conducted on 124 post-HCV cirrhotic patients presenting to the clinics of the Endemic Medicine Department at Mansoura University Hospital for evaluation before HCV antiviral therapy: 78 were Child A and 46 were Child B(score ≤ 8). Inclusion criteria for patients enrolled in this study was presence of cirrhotic HCV(diagnosed by either biopsy or fulfillment of clinical basis). Exclusion criteria consisted of patients with other etiologies of liver cirrhosis, e.g., hepatitis B virus and patients with high MELD score on transplant list. All patients were subjected to full medical record, full basic investigations, endoscopy, and computed tomography(CT), and then divided into groups with no varices, small varices, or large risky varices. In addition, values of Fibrosis-4 score(FIB-4), aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index(APRI), and platelet count/splenic diameter ratio(PC/SD) were also calculated.RESULTS Detection of large varies is a multi-factorial process, affected by many variables. Choosing binary logistic regression, dependent factors were either large or small varices while independent factors included CT variables such coronary vein diameter, portal vein(PV) diameter, lieno-renal shunt and other laboratory noninvasive variables namely FIB-4, APRI, and platelet count/splenic diameter. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve was plotted to determine the accuracy of non-invasive parameters for predicting the presence of large esophageal varices and the area under the ROC curve for each one of these parameters was obtained. A model was established and the best model for prediction of large risky esophageal varices used both PC/SD and PV diameter(75% accuracy), while the logistic model equation was shown to be(PV diameter ×-0.256) plus(PC/SD ×-0.006) plus(8.155). | 15 | Clinical outcomes of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy versus femtosecond laser assisted keratomileusis for correction of high myopia in South Egyptian population显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy(t-PRK) with adjuvant mitomycin C(MMC) versus femtosecond laser assisted keratomileusis(Femto-LASIK) in correction of high myopia.METHODS: Prospective randomized comparative study including 156 eyes of 156 patients with high myopia and a spherical equivalent refraction(SER) <-6.00 D. They were divided randomly into two groups: Group A included 72 eyes treated with t-PRK with adjuvant MMC and Group B included 84 eyes treated with Femto-LASIK. Visual acuity, SER, corneal topography, pachymetry and keratometry were assessed for 12 mo postoperatively.RESULTS: The preoperative mean SER was-8.86±1.81 and-9.25±1.70 D in t-PRK MMC group and Femto-LASIK respectively(P=0.99) which improved to-0.65±0.43 D and-0.69±0.50 D at 12 mo follow up. Mean SER remained stable during the 12 mo of follow-up, with no statistically significant difference between the two groups(P=0.64). In t-PRK MMC group, only six eyes needed retreatment after six months of follow up.
