Red pigment production by Penicillium purpurogenum GH2 is influenced by pH and temperature显示文摘The combined effects of pH and temperature on red pigment production and fungal morphology were evaluated in a submerged culture of Penicillium purpurogenum GH2, using Czapek-Dox media with D-xylose as a carbon source. An experimental design with a factorial fix was used: three pH values (5, 7, and 9) and two temperature levels (24 and 34 °C) were evaluated. The highest production of red pigment (2.46 g/L) was reached with a pH value of 5 and a temperature of 24 °C. Biomass and red pigment production were not directly associated. This study demon- strates that P. purpurogenum GH2 produces a pigment of potential interest to the food industry. It also shows the feasibility of producing and obtaining natural water-soluble pigments for potential use in food industries. A strong combined effect (p<0.05) of pH and temperature was associated with maximal red pigment production (2.46 g/L).Alejandro MéNDEZ Catalina PéREZ Julio Cesar MONTAéZ Gabriela MARTíNEZ Cristóbal Noé AGUILAR 2011Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2011,12,12:4
在精神分裂症和听觉的幻觉的多模式的 morphometry 和功能的磁性的回声成像显示文摘 AIM:To validate a multimodal[structural and functional magnetic resonance(MR)]approach as coincidence brain clusters are hypothesized to correlate with clinical severity of auditory hallucinations.METHODS:Twenty-two patients meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(fourth edition,DSM-Ⅳ)criteria for schizophrenia and experiencing persistent hallucinations together with 28 healthy controls were evaluated with structural and functional MR imaging with an auditory paradigm designed to replicate those emotions related to the patients’hallucinatory experiences.Coincidence maps were obtained by combining structural maps of gray matter reduction with emotional functional increased activation.Abnormal areas were correlated with the brief psychiatric rating scale(BPRS)and the psychotic symptom rating scale(PSYRATS)scales.RESULTS:The coincidence analysis showed areas with coexistence gray matter reductions and emotional activation in bilateral middle temporal and superior temporal gyri.Significant negative correlations between BPRS and PSYRATS scales were observed.BPRS scores were negatively correlated in the middle temporal gyrus(right)(t=6.86,P=0.001),while negative PSYRATS correlation affected regions in both the superior temporal gyrus(left)(t=7.85,P=0.001)and middle temporal gyrus(left)(t=4.97,P=0.002).CONCLUSION:Our data identify left superior and middle temporal gyri as relevant areas for the understanding of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia. The use of multimodal approaches, sharing structural and functional information, may demonstrate areas specifically linked to the severity of auditory hallucinations.Gracián García-Martí Eduardo Jesús Aguilar Luis Martí-Bonmatí M José Escartí Julio Sanjuán 2012World Journal of Radiology2012,4,4:3
Quality of life, work productivity impairment and healthcare resources in inflammatory bowel diseases in Brazil显示文摘BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD)have been associated with a low quality of life(QoL)and a negative impact on work productivity compared to the general population.Information about disease control,patient-reported outcomes(PROs),treatment patterns and use of healthcare resources is relevant to optimizing IBD management.AIM To describe QoL and work productivity and activity impairment(WPAI),treatment patterns and use of healthcare resources among IBD patients in Brazil.METHODS A multicenter cross-sectional study included adult outpatients who were previously diagnosed with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease(CD)or ulcerative colitis(UC).At enrolment, active CD and UC were defined as having a Harvey Bradshaw Index≥8 or a CD Activity Index≥220 or calprotectin>200μg/g or previous colonoscopy results suggestive of inadequate control(per investigator criteria)and a 9-point partial Mayo score≥5,respectively.The PRO assessment included the QoL questionnaires SF-36 and EQ-5D-5L,the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire(IBDQ),and the WPAI questionnaire.Information about healthcare resources and treatment during the previous 3 years was collected from medical records.Chi-square,Fisher’s exact and Student’s t-/Mann-Whitney U tests were used to compare PROs,treatment patterns and the use of healthcare resources by disease activity(α=0.05).RESULTS Of the 407 patients in this study(CD/UC:64.9%/35.1%,mean age 42.9/45.9 years,54.2%/56.6%female,38.3%/37.1%employed),44.7%/25.2%presented moderate-to-severe CD/UC activity, respectively,at baseline.Expressed in median values for CD/UC,respectively,the SF-36 physical component was 46.6/44.7 and the mental component was 45.2/44.2,the EQ-visual analog scale score was 80.0/70.0,and the IBDQ overall score was 164.0/165.0.Moderate to severe activity, female gender, being unemployed,a lower educational level and lower income were associated with lower QoL(P<0.05).Median work productivity impairment was 20%and 5%for CD and UC patients, respectively, and activity impairment was 30%,the latter being higher among patients with moderate to severe disease activity compared to patients with mild or no disease activity(75.0%vs 10.0%,P<0.001).For CD/UC patients,respectively,25.4%/2.8%had at least one surgery,38.3%/19.6%were hospitalized, and 70.7%/77.6%changed IBD treatment at least once during the last 3 years. The most common treatments at baseline were biologics(75.3%)and immunosuppressants(70.9%)for CD patients and 5-ASA compounds(77.5%)for UC patients.CONCLUSION Moderate to severe IBD activity, especially among CD patients,is associated with a substantial impact on QoL,work productivity impairment and an increased number of IBD surgeries and hospitalizations in Brazil.Rogerio Serafim Parra Julio MF Chebli Heda MBS Amarante Cristina Flores Jose ML Parente Odery Ramos Milene Fernandes Jose JR Rocha Marley R Feitosa Omar Feres Antonio S Scotton Rodrigo B Nones Murilo M Lima Cyrla Zaltman Carolina D Goncalves Isabella M Guimaraes Genoile O Santana Ligia Y Sassaki Rogerio S Hossne Mauro Bafutto Roberto LK Junior Mikaell AG Faria Sender J Miszputen Tarcia NF Gomes Wilson R Catapani Anderson A Faria Stella CS Souza Rosana F Caratin Juliana T Senra Maria LA Ferrari 2019World Journal of Gastroenterology2019,25,38:2
COVID-19 and neurologic manifestations:a synthesis from the child neurologist’s corner显示文摘Background Since December 2019,the SARS-CoV-2 virus has been a global health issue. The main clinical presentation of this virus is a flu-like disease;however, patients with diverse neurologic manifestations have also been reported. In this review,we attempt to summarize, discuss and update the knowledge of the neurologic manifestations in the pediatric population affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection and the pandemic’s effects in children with neurologic diseases.Data sources This review analyzes studies found on the PubMed database using the following keywords:Neurologic manifestations COVID-19,Neurological COVID-19,coronavirus,SARS-CoV-2,pediatric COVID-19,COVID-19 in children,MIS-C,Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome,Guillain BarréSyndrome,Stroke,ADEM,and Anti-NMDA encephalitis. All studies cited were published between 2004 and 2022,and represent the most relevant articles in the field. The World Health Organization COVID-19 online dashboard was assessed to obtain updated epidemiological data. Results The most common neurologic symptoms in the pediatric population are headache, seizures, encephalopathy, and muscle weakness. These can be present during COVID-19 or weeks after recovering from it.Children who presented with multi-system inflammatory syndrome had a higher incidence of neurologic manifestations, which conferred a greater risk of morbidity and mortality.Several neuro-pathophysiological mechanisms have been proposed, including direct virus invasion,hyper-inflammatory reactions,multi-systemic failure, prothrombotic states, and immune-mediated processes. On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected patients with neurologic diseases, making it challenging to access controls, treatment, and therapies. Conclusions Various neurologic manifestations have been associated with children’s SARS-CoV-2 infection. It is important to identify and give them proper and opportune treatment because they can be potentially grave and life-threatening;some can lead to long-lasting sequelae.Different neuro-pathophysiological mechanisms have been proposed, however,a causal relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and neurologic manifestations remains to be proven.Patients with neurologic diseases are especially affected by COVID-19,not only by the disease itself but also by its complications and pandemic management measures.Carolina Valderas Gastón Méndez Alejandra Echeverría Nelson Suarez Katherin Julio Francisca Sandoval 2022World Journal of Pediatrics2022,18,6:2
Current and novel approaches in the pharmacological treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the most lethal malignant tumours worldwide. The mortality-to-incidence ratio is up to 91.6%in many countries, representing the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths.Systemic drugs, including the multikinase inhibitors sorafenib and lenvatinib, are first-line drugs used in HCC treatment.Unfortunately, these therapies are ineffective in most cases due to late diagnosis and the development of tumour resistance. Thus, novel pharmacological alternatives are urgently needed. For instance, immune checkpoint inhibitors have provided new approaches targeting cells of the immune system.Furthermore, monoclonal antibodies against programmed cell death-1 have shown benefits in HCC patients. In addition, drug combinations, including first-line treatment and immunotherapy,as well as drug repurposing, are promising novel therapeutic alternatives. Here,we review the current and novel pharmacological approaches to fight HCC.Preclinical studies,as well as approved and ongoing clinical trials for liver cancer treatment, are discussed. The pharmacological opportunities analysed here should lead to significant improvement in HCC therapy.Fernanda Villarruel-Melquiades María Eugenia Mendoza-Garrido Claudia M García-Cuellar Yesennia Sánchez-Pérez Julio Isael Pérez-Carreón Javier Camacho 2023World Journal of Gastroenterology2023,29,17:2
