Analysis of sea surface temperature fronts in the Taiwan Strait and its adjacent area using an advanced edge detection method显示文摘A morphology-based edge detection method has been used to study sea surface temperature (SST) fronts in the Taiwan Strait and its adjacent area. The method is based on mathematical morphology with multi-dimensional and multi-structural elements. Using six years’ SST data from September 2002 to August 2008, we distinguished the large SST front like Kuroshio Front as well as the smaller ones: namely Taiwan Bank Front, Zhe-Min Coastal Front and Zhang-Yun Ridge Front. The seasonal and monthly variations of these fronts were also studied. Generally, the SST fronts are stronger in winter but weaker in summer. And the fronts are at their active stage during the period from January to May but at their declining stage during the period from July to October. | PI QingLing1,2,3 & HU JianYu1,2 1 State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China 2 Department of Oceanography, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China 3 China Communications Construction Company First Harbor Consultants CO., LTD., Tianjin 300222, China | 2010 | Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,7: | 29
Neuroprotection of aucubin in primary diabetic encephalopathy显示文摘Hippocampal neuronal apoptosis accompanied by impairment of cognitive function occurs in primary diabetic encephalopathy. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective mechanism of the iridoid glycoside, aucubin, using rats (n=8). Diabetes mellitus was induced in the rats by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg body weight). After 65 d, half of the DM rats were administered aucubin (5 mg/kg; i.p.) for 15 d, yielding treatment DM+A. A third group of rats received no strepto- zotocin or aucibin, and served as controls (CON). Encephalopathy was assessed using Y-maze be- havioral testing. Rats were euthanized on Day 87, and hippocampi were excised for visual (light and transmission electron microscopic) and immunochemical (Western blot; immunohistochemical) as- sessments of the CA1 subfield for apoptosis and expression of regulatory proteins Bcl-2 and Bax. Treatment responses to all the parameters examined (body weight, plasma glucose, Y-maze error rates, pyramidal cell ultrastructure, proportions of apoptotic cells, levels of expression of Bcl-2 and Bax, and survivability of neuronal cells) were identical: there were highly significant differences between DM and CON groups (P<0.001), but the effects were significantly moderated (P<0.01) in DM+A compared with DM. These findings confirm the association of apoptosis with the encephalopathic effects of diabetes mellitus, and suggest a major role of the expression levels of Bcl-2 and Bax in the regulation of apop- totic cell death. All of the results suggest that aucubin could effectively inhibit apoptosis by modulating the expressions of Bcl-2 and Bax genes. | XUE HongYu1, JIN LiJi1,2, JIN Lei1, ZHANG Peng1, LI DanQing4, XIA YanQiu1, LU YaNan1 & XU YongPing1,3 1 Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China 2 State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China 3 Dalian SEM Bioengineer and Biotech Ltd., Dalian 116024, China 4 The Second Affiliated Hospital, Dalian Medical University, Dalian 116024, China | 2008 | Science China(Life Sciences)2008,51,6: | 22

Geochronology of middle Neoproterozoic volcanic deposits in Yangtze Craton interior of South China and its implications to tectonic settings显示文摘Here we report new SHRIMP dating results of the crystal tuff in Ejiaao Formation of middle Banxi Group in northern Guizhou. The results indicate that the volcanic deposition occurred at ~780 Ma. We also suggests that the igneous activities across Yangtze Craton with diabase dyke swarms and basal volcanic rocks during middle Banxi time are indicative of the episodic, extensive and vigorous great bimodal igneous events during middle Neoproterozoic (825-720 Ma) in South China. The characteristics of the igneous series are contrary to the model claiming they are of island-arc origin, but suggest that they are the records of rifting process and may be related to the episodic plume activities leading to the break-up of Rodinia. | WANG ZhengJiang1, WANG Jian1, DUAN TaiZhong2, XIE Yuan1, ZHUO JieWen1,3 & YANG Ping1 1 Chengdu Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Land and Resources, Chengdu 610082, China 2 Marathon Oil UK Ltd., Aberdeen, Scotland, AB15 6FZ, UK 3 Graduate Department, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Beijing 100037, China | 2010 | Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,9: | 20
TRANSITION OF CONVECTIVE PATTERNS IN A RECTANGULAR CELL显示文摘In this paper our interest is focussed on the behavior in the transition of the Traveling Wave (TW) convective patterns along the nonlinear branch in a rectangular cell of Γ=12 for ψ=-0.11. Our numerical simulations were performed by solving the two-dimensional hydrodynamic equations using the SIMPLE method. Three types of convection patterns appearing in the nonlinear branch of the bifurcation diagram were observed. In particular, the undulation TW state in the rectangular cell was obtained, and the hysteresis in the transition from the TW State to the Stationary Overturning Convection (SOC) was verified. | Ning Li-zhong Institute of Hydraulic Engineering, Xi’an University of Technology, Xi’an 710048, China Department of Engineering, Nitto Co. | 6 | Production of transgenic blastocyst by nuclear transfer from different types of somatic cells in cattle显示文摘The present study examined the effects of genetic manipulation to the donor cell and different types of transgenic donor cells on developmental potential of bovine nuclear trans-fer (NT) embryos. Four types of bovine somatic cells, including granulosa cells, fetal fibroblasts, fetal oviduct epithelial cells and fetal ovary epithelial cells, were transfected with a plasmid (pCE-EGFP-Ires-Neo-dNdB) containing the enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) and neomycin-resistant (Neor) genes by electroporation. After 14 days selection with 800 mg/mL G418, transgenic cell lines from each type of somatic cells were obtained. Nontransgenic granulosa cells and all 4 types of transgenic somatic cells were used as nuclear donor to produce transgenic embryos by NT. There was no significant difference in development rates to the blas-tocyst stage for NT embryos from transgenic and nontransgenic granulosa cells (44.6% and 42.8%, respectively), and transfer of NT embryos derived from transgenic and nontransgenic granulosa cells to recipients resulted in similar pregnancy rates on day 90 (19% and 25%, re-spectively). The development rates to the blastocyst stage of NT embryos were significantly dif-ferent among different types of transgenic donor cells (P<0.05). Blastocyst rates from fetal ovi-duct epithelial cell and granulosa cell (49.1% and 44.6%, respectively) were higher than those from fetal fibroblast (32.7%) and fetal ovary epithelial cell (22.5%). These results suggest that (i) genetic manipulation to donor cells has no negative effect on in vitro and early in vivo develop-mental competence of bovine NT embryos and (ii) granulosa and fetal oviduct epithelial cells can be used to produce transgenic bovine NT embryos more efficiently. In addition, GFP can be used to select transgenic NT embryos as a non-invasive selective marker. | GONG Guochun1, DAI Yunping1, FAN Baoliang1, ZHU Huabing2, WANG Haiping3, WANG Lili1, FANG Changge1, WAN Rong3, LIU Ying3, LI Rong3 & LI Ning1 1. | 7 | Theory on real-time control of construction quality and progress and its application to high arc dam显示文摘A complete scheme for solving the key scientific problems associated with high-standard,high-intensity continuous construction of high arch dams was presented. First, based on a coupling analysis of construction system decomposition and coordination for a high arc dam,a mathematical model for real-time control of construction quality and progress that considers complex constraints was developed. Second,a method of progress control was proposed based on a dynamic simulation. Third,a dynamic quality control mechanism was established based on construction information collected using a PDA. Fourth,a system for integrating collected information, progress simulation and quality control analyses under a network environment was developed. Finally, these methods were applied to a practical project to show that each aspect of a construction process can be managed effectively and that real-time monitoring and feedback control can be realized. Our methods provide new theoretical principles and technical measures for quality and progress control in the high arc dam construction process. | ZHONG DengHua1, REN BingYu1, LI MingChao1, WU BinPing1 & LI MingChuan2 1 Department of Hydraulic and Hydroelectric Engineering, School of Civil Engineering, Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072, China 2 Ertan Hydropower Development Company, Ltd., Chengdu 610051, China | 2010 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,10: | 18

Hierarchy modeling of subsurface palaeochannel reservoir architecture显示文摘The studies on fluvial reservoir architecture are mainly aimed at outcrop and modern deposition, but rarely at the subsurface reservoir,so there are few effective methods to predict the distribution of subsurface reservoir architectures. In this paper, taking the meandering river reservoir of Guantao formation Gudao Oilfield,Jiyang depression,Baohai Gulf Basin,East China as an example, the archi-tectural modeling method of complex meandering belt reservoir is proposed, that is hierarchy con-straint,pattern fitting and multi-dimensional interaction. Architectures of meandering river reservoir can be divided into three hierarchies: meandering channel sandbody, point bar and lateral accretion body. Different hierarchies of the quantitative architecture pattern are fitted to subsurface well data (including dynamic monitoring data) in different hierarchies through one-dimensional hole,2D profiles and plane and 3D space, which are verified by each other. And then 3D model in different hierarchies is established. At the same time, the quantificational relationship between width of active river and the scale of point bar is set up,and the scale of lateral accretion sand body and shale beddings is con-firmed with horizontal well data. The study not only has significant meaning on the development of geology, but also can improve the oilfield exploitation greatly. | WU ShengHe1,YUE DaLi1,LIU JianMin2,SHU QingLin2,FAN Zheng1,3 & LI YuPeng1 1 Earth Sciences and Geoinformatics School,China University of Petroleum,Beijing 102249,China 2 SINOPEC Shengli Oilfield Co. | 12 | In situ experiments on width and evolution characteristics of excavation damaged zone in deeply buried tunnels显示文摘The seven long tunnels of Jinping II hydropower station are deeply buried. The width and evolution characteristics of excavation damaged zone(EDZ) are the key problem to the design of tunnels excavation and supports. In order to study this problem, several specific experimental tunnels with different overburden and geometric sizes were excavated at this site.Digital borehole camera, sliding micrometer,cross-hole acoustic wave equipment and acoustic emission apparatus were adopted. This paper introduced the comprehensive in situ experimental methods through pre-installed facilities and pre-drilled boreholes.Typical properties of the surrounding rock mass, including cracks, deformation, elastic wave and micro fractures, were measured during the whole process of the tunnel excavation. The width and characteristics of formation and evolution of tunnels EDZ were analyzed under different construction methods involving of TBM and drilling and blasting, the test tunnels were excavated by full-face or two benches. The relationships between EDZ and tunnel geometry sizes, overburden and excavation method were described as well. The results will not only contribute a great deal to the analysis of rock mass behavior in deeply buried rock mass, but also provide direct data for support design and rockburst prediction. | LI ShaoJun 1,FENG XiaTing 1,LI ZhanHai 3,CHEN BingRui 1,JIANG Quan 1,WU ShiYong 2,HU Bin 2 &XU JinSong 2 1 State Key Laboratory of Geomechanics and Geotechinical Engineering,Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Wuhan 430071,China 2 Ertan Hydropower Development Company,Ltd.,Chengdu 610051,China 3 School of Resources and Civil Engineering,Northeastern University,Shenyang 110004,China | 2011 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2011,54,S1: | 13
Salt-related structural styles of Kuqa foreland fold belt, northern Tarim basin显示文摘The salt beds of Lower Tertiary developed in the mid-segment of Kuqa foreland fold belt, northern Tarim basin. They considerably controlled structural deformation of the belt. Ac- cording to the field observation, seismic profile interpretation and drilling data, three different structural styles of supra-salt, intra-salt and sub-salt occurred in the Kuqa foreland fold belt. Su- pra-salt structural styles mainly include thrust faults and fault-related sags. Intra-slat structural styles essentially are salt-pillows, intra-salt faults and folds, and salt weld structures. Sub-salt structural styles mainly consist of imbricated thrust faults, duplex structures, pop-up and fault-related folds. It is indicated that great differences exist among supra-salt, intra-salt and sub-salt structures of Kuqa foreland fold belt. The salt-related structures were formed in the same structural stress field. The dynamic mechanism of the salt-related structures is mainly associated with gravitation, compression and plastic flow of salt beds. | TANG Liangjie1,2, JIA Chengzao3, PI Xuejun4, CHEN Suping1,2, WANG Zhiyu5, XIE Huiwen4 1. | 15 | Influence of differential settlement on pavement structure of widened roads based on large-scale model test显示文摘This study introduced at first the background of numerous highway widening projects that have been developed in recent years in China.Using a large ground settlement simulator and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor network system,a large-scale model test, with a similarity ratio of 1:2,was performed to analyze the influence of differential settlement between new and old subgrades on pavement structure under loading condition. The result shows that excessive differential settlement can cause considerable tensile strain in the pavement structure of a widened road, for which a maximum value (S) of 6 cm is recommended.Under the repetitive load, the top layers of pavement structure are subjected to the alternate action of tensile and compressive strains, which would eventually lead to a fatigue failure of the pavement. However, application of geogrid to the splice between the new and the old roads can reduce differential settlement to a limited extent. The new subgrade of a widened road is vulnerable to the influence of dynamic load transferred from the above pavement structures. While for the old subgrade, due to its comparatively high stiffness,it can well spread the load on the pavement statically or dynamically. The test also shows that application of geogrid can effectively prevent or defer the failure of pavement structure. With geogrid, the modulus of resilience of the subgrade is increased and inhomogeneous deformation can be reduced;therefore, the stress/strain distribution in pavement structure under loading condition becomes uniform. The results obtained in this context are expected to provide a helpful reference for structural design and maintenance strategy for future highway widening projects. | Xiaolin Weng1,2,Wei Wang3 1 Key Laboratory for Special Area Highway Engineering of Ministry of Education,Chang’an University,Xi’an,710064,China 2 CCCC First Highway Consultants Co.,Ltd.,Xi’an,710068,China 3 Henan Vocational and Technical College of Communications,Zhengzhou,450005,China | 2011 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2011,3,1: | 11
Soil erosion and sediment transport in the gullied Loess Plateau:Scale effects and their mechanisms显示文摘Scale effects exist in the whole process of rainfall―runoff―soil erosion―sediment transport in river basins. The differences of hydrographs and sediment graphs in different positions in a river basin are treated as basic scale effects, which are more complex in the gullied Loess Plateau,a region notorious for high intensity soil erosion and hyper-concentrated sediment-laden flow. The up-scaling method of direct extrapolation that maintains dynamical mechanism effective in large scale application was cho-sen as the methodology of this paper.Firstly, scale effects of hydrographs and sediment graphs were analyzed by using field data, and key sub-processes and their mechanisms contributing to scale effects were clearly defined. Then, the Digital Yellow River Model that integrates sub-models for the sub-processes was used with high resolution to simulate rainfall―runoff―soil erosion―sediment transport response in Chabagou watershed, and the distributed results representing scale effects were obtained. Finally, analysis on the simulation results was carried out.It was shown that gravitational erosion and hyper-concentrated flow contribute most to the spatial variation of hydrographs and sediment graphs in the spatial scale.Different spatial scale distributions and superposition of different sub-processes are the mechanisms of scale effects. | LI TieJian1,WANG GuangQian1,XUE Hai2,3 & WANG Kai4 1 State Key Laboratory of Hydroscience and Engineering,Tsinghua University,Beijing 100084,China 2 Yellow River Engineering Consulting Co.,Ltd.,Zhengzhou 450003,China 3 North China Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower,Zhengzhou 450008,China 4 China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research,Beijing 100038,China | 2009 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2009,52,5: | 11
Effects of multidrug resistance, antisense RNA on the chemosensitivity of hepatocellular carcinoma cells显示文摘BACKGROUND: Multidrug resistance is a major obstacle in cancer chemotherapy. We examined whether the antisense RNA of multidrug resistance gene 1 (mdr1) could reverse multidrug resistance in the human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell line SMMC7721/ADM. METHODS: The recombinant adenoviruses pAdEasy- GFP-ASmdr1 product was produced by the adenoviral vector AdEasy system, which can express antisense RNA against the mdr1 gene. Following that, the recombinant adenovirus was transfected into the P-glycoprotein- producing multidrug resistance cell line, SMMC7721/ADM human HCC cells resistant to adriamycin (ADM) and daunorubicin (DNR). In order to investigate the reversal of multidrug resistance phenotype, we measured the expression of mdr1 mRNA by RT-PCR and the production of P-glycoprotein by flow cytometry. The sensitivities for ADM and DNR SMMC7721/ADM cells were examined by [3-(4, 5-dimethylthi-azol-2-yl)-2,5 diphenyl-terazolium bromide] (MTT) analysis. RESULTS: The low-level expression of mdr1 mRNA and P-glycoprotein production were observed in parental sensitive cells SMMC/7721 in addition to the overexpressionof mdr1 mRNA and P-glycoprotein in SMMC7721/ADM cells. The transfection of antisense-RNA into SMMC7721/ ADM cells resulted in decreases of mdr1 mRNA and P-glycoprotein, but increase of drug sensitivities. The sensitivities of transfected SMMC7721/ADM cells to ADM and DNR in IC50 reduced by 31.25% and 62.96% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Mdr1 antisense RNA can increase the sensitivities of SMMC7721/ADM cells to anticancer drug by decreasing the expression of the mdr1 gene and inhibiting P-glycoprotein expression. This strategy may be applicable to cancer patients with P-glycoportein mediated multidrug resistance. | Bo Li, Tian Ye, Lei Zhao, De-Hua Li, Xing-Hua Gou, Lan-Ying Zhao, Lei Han, Lin Chen, Lu-Nan Yan and Jian-Ping Gong Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Second Affiliated Hospital, Chongqing University of Medical Sciences, Chongqing 400010, China Department of Traditional Chinese Surgery, Second Affiliated Hospital, Luzhou Medical College, Luzhou 646000, China Genetic Engineering Laboratory, Chengdu Di’ao Group Co., Ltd., Chengdu 610041, China Department of General Surgery, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, China | 2006 | Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2006,5,4: | 10
