1Larvicidal and repellent potential of Moringa oleifera against malarial vector,Anopheles stephensi Liston(Insecta:Diptera:Culicidae)显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the larvicidal and pupicidal potential of the methanolic extracts from Moringa oleifera(M.oleifera) plant seeds against malarial vector Anopheles stephensi(A.stephensi) mosquitoes at different concentrations(20,40,60,80 and 100 ppm).Methods:M.oleifera was collected from the area of around Bharathiar University,Coimbatore.The dried plant materials were powdered by an electrical blender.From each sample,100 g of the plant material were extracted with 300 mL of methanol for 8 h in a Soxhlet apparatus.The extracts were evaporated to dryness in rotary vacuum evaporator to yield 122 mg and 110 mg of dark greenish material(residue) from Arcang amara and Ocimum basilicum,respectively.One gram of the each plant residue was dissolved separately in 100 mL of acetone(stock solution) from which different concentrations, i.e.,20,40,60,80 and 100 ppm were prepared.Results:Larvicidal activity of M.oleifera exhibited in the first to fourth instar larvae of the A.stephensi,and the LC_(50) and LC_(90) values were 57.79 ppm and 125.93 ppm for the first instar,63.90 ppm and 133.07 ppm for the second inslar,72.45 ppm and 139.82 ppm for the third instar,78.93 ppm and 143.20 ppm for the fourth instar,respectively. 2Effect of methoxychlor on antioxidant system of goat epididymal sperm in vitro显示文摘Aim: To evaluate the effect of methoxychlor on the antioxidant system of goat epididymal sperm. Methods:Epididymis of adult goat was obtained from local slaughter houses and sperm were collected by chopping the epididymis in modified Ringer's phosphate solution (RPS). After several washings, the sperm samples were dispersed in RPS and incubated with methoxychlor (1 μnol/L, 10 μmol/L and 100 μmol/L) and methoxychlor + vitamin C (100μmol/L each) for 3 h at 32℃. After incubation, the sperm motility and viability were assessed. An aliquot of sperm sample was homogenized, centrifuged and used for the assay of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and lipid peroxidation. Results: In methoxychlor-incubated sperm and in sperm co-incubated with methoxychlor and vitamin C, the sperm motility and viability showed no significant changes as compared to the corresponding controls. In methoxychlor-incubated sperm the activity of superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase were decreased while lipid peroxidation was increased in a dose-dependent manner. Co-incubation of sperm with methoxychlor and vitamin C showed no changes in the activity of superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase and in the level of lipid peroxidation. Conclusion: Methoxychlor induced oxidative stress in epididymal sperm of goats by decreasing the levels of antioxidant enzymes. Systematic prediction of structural integrity of critical structures such ascombustion chambers,pressure vessels,nuclear reactor components,boilers etc.,ensures the human safety,environmental protection,and the economical considerations.The present work aims at prediction of fatigue behaviour of symmetric structures like pressure vessels in the presence of common welding defects such as lack of fusion( LOF),lack of penetration( LOP) and porosity.A ring type specimen which replicates the stress pattern in thepressure vessel is considered for the study of severity of weld imperfections. 4Extraordinary evanescent field confinement waveguide sensor for mid-infrared trace gas spectroscopy显示文摘Nanophotonic waveguides are at the core of a great variety of optical sensors.These structures confine light along defined paths on photonic chips and provide light-matter interaction via an evanescent field.However,waveguides still lag behind free-space optics for sensitivity-critical applications such as trace gas detection.Short optical pathlengths,low interaction strengths,and spurious etalon fringes in spectral transmission are among the main reasons why on-chip gas sensing is still in its infancy.In this work,we report on a mid-infrared integrated waveguide sensor that successfully addresses these drawbacks.This sensor operates with a 107%evanescent field confinement factor in air,which not only matches but also outperforms free-space beams in terms of the per-length optical interaction.Furthermore,negligible facet reflections result in a flat spectral background and record-low absorbance noise that can finally compete with free-space spectroscopy.The sensor performance was validated at 2.566μm,which showed a 7 ppm detection limit for acetylene with only a 2 cm long waveguide.Marek Vlk Anurup Datta Sebastián Alberti Henock Demessie Yallew Vinita Mittal Ganapathy Senthil Murugan Jána Jagerská 2021Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,2:9
5Synthesis of silver nanoparticles using leaves of Catharanthus roseus Linn.G.Don and their antiplasmodial activities显示文摘Objective:To develop a novel approach for the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using aqueous leaves extracts of Catharanthus roseus(C.roseus) Linn.G.Don which has been proven aclive against malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum(P.falciparum).Methods:Characterizations were determined by using ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis) spectrophotometry,scanning electron microscopy(SEM).energy dispersive X-ray and X-ray diffraction.Results:SLM showed the formation of silver nanoparticles with an average size of 35-55 nm.X-ray diffraction analysts showed that the particles were crystalline in nature with face centred cubic structure of the hulk silver with the broad peaks at 32.4.46.4 and 28.0.Conclusions:It can be concluded that the leaves of C.roseus can he good source for synthesis of silver nanoparticle which shows aiitiplasmodial activity against P.falciparum.The important outcome of the study will he the development of value added products from medicinal plants C.roseus lor hionicdical and nanotechnology based industries.Ponarulselvam S Panneerselvam C Murugan K Aarthi N Kalimuthu K Thangamani S 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,7:8
6摩擦堆焊法在Ti-6Al-4V表面制备的AA2124/4wt.%B4C纳米复合涂层的显微组织和磨损特性(英文)显示文摘为了提高Ti-6Al-4V的耐磨性,运用摩擦堆焊法在其表面制备AA2124/4wt.%B4C纳米复合涂层。采用传统搅拌铸造方法制备复合材料,然后用自主研发的摩擦堆焊机在不同的转速下进行涂覆。采用传统和先进显微技术对复合镀层的显微组织进行观察,采用销-盘装置对制备材料的滑动磨损性能进行评价。复合涂层的厚度和宽度均随转速的增加而增加。涂层与基体的界面呈直线,未观察到厚的金属间层。结果还表明,纳米B4C粒子在复合涂层中分布均匀,晶粒细小,铝基体与B4C颗粒的界面结合良好。总之,该复合涂层由于其较小的有效接触面积,较低的摩擦因数和良好的界面结合性能,使钛合金基体的耐磨性得到提高。I. 7Taxol Determination from Pestalotiopsis pauciseta, a Fungal Endophyte of a Medicinal Plant显示文摘Taxol is the most effective antitumor agent developed in the past three decades.It has been used for effective treatment of a variety of cancers.A taxol-producing endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis pauciseta(strain CHP-11) was isolated from the leaves of Cardiospermum helicacabum and screened for taxol production.The fungus was identified based on the morphology of the fungal culture and the characteristics of the spores and screened for taxol production.The amount of taxol produced by this endophytic fungus was quantified by HPLC and it produced 113.3 μg/L,thus the fungus can serve as a potential material for fungus engineering to improve taxol production.This fungal taxol also had strong anticancer activity against some cancer cells viz.,BT 220,H116,Int 407,HL 251 and HLK 210 tested by Apoptotic assay and it is indicated that with the increase of taxol concentration from 0.005-0.05 μmol/L,taxol induced increased cell death through apoptosis.Gangadevi V Murugan M Muthumary J 2008生物工程学报2008,24,8:5
8In vitro biofilm formation by uropathogenic Escherichia coli and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern显示文摘Objective:To detect in vitro biofilm formation of uropathogenic Escherichia coli(E.coli)(UPEC) strains isolated from urine specimens and also to determine their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern using 13 commonly used antibiotics.Methods:The present study comprised of 166 urine specimens collected from tertiary care hospitals in and around Coimbatore.South India. All the specimens were subjected to gram staining,bacterial culture and the E.coli strains were screened for biofilm formation using Tube Method(TM),Congo Red Agar(CRA) and Tissue Culture Plate method(TCP) respectively.Subsequently,the antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed by Kirby Bauer-disk diffusion method for the biofilm and non-biofilm producing E. coli strains.Results:Of the 100(60.2%) E.coli strains,72 strains displayed a biofilm positive phenotype under the optimized conditions in the Tube Method and the strains were classified as highly positive(17,23.6%),moderate positive(19.26.3%) and weakly positive(36.50.0%). similarly under the optimized conditions on Congo Red agar medium,biofilm positive phenotype strains were classified as highly positive(23,23%).moderate positive(37.37%) and weakly positive(40,40%).While in TCP method,the biofilm positive phenotype strains were also classified as highly positive(6.6%),moderate positive(80.80%) and weakly positive(14,14%),it didn’t not correlate well with the tube method for detecting biofilm formation in E.coli.The rates of antibiotic resistance of biofilm producing E.coli were found to be 100%for chloramphenicol and amoxyclav(amoxicillin and clavulanic acid),86%for gentamicin and cefotaxime.84%for ceftazidime,83%for cotrimoxazole and piperacillin/tazobactam,75%for tetracycline and 70% for amikacin,Conclusions:This study reveals the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of biofilm and non-biofilm producing uropathogenic E.coli strains.Poovendran Ponnusamy Vidhya Natarajan Murugan Sevanan 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,3:5
9Characterization and bacterial toxicity of lanthanum oxide bulk and nanoparticles显示文摘This study evaluated the bacterial toxicity of lanthanum oxide micron and nano sized particles using shake flask method against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria. Particle size, morphology and chemical composition were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Re-sults indicated that lanthanum oxide nanoparticles showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, but not against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was speculated that lanthanum oxide produced this effect by interacting with the gram-positive bacte-rial cell wall. 10Anti-chikungunya activity of luteolin and apigenin rich fraction from Cynodon dactylon显示文摘Objective:To obtain Iuteolin and apigenin rich fraction from the ethanolic extract of Cynodon dactylon(L.)(C.dactylon) Pers and evaluate the fraction's cytotoxicity and anti-Chikungunya potential using Vero cells.Methods:The ethanolic extract of C.dactylon was subjected to silica gel column chromatography to obtain anti-chikungunya virus(CHIKV) fraction.Reverse phase-HPLC and GC-MS studies were carried out to identily the major phytochemicals in the fraction using phylochemical standards.Cytotoxicity and the potential of the fraction against CHIKV were evaluated in vitro using Vero cells.Reduction in viral replication was assessed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) after treating the viral infected Vero cells with the fraction.Results:Reverse Phase-HPLC and GC-MS studies confirmed the presence of flavonoids,luteolin and apigenin as major phytochemicals in the anti-CHIKV ethanolic fraction of C.dactylon- The fraction was found to exhibit potent viral inhibitory activity(about 98%) at the concentration of 50 μg/mL as observed by reduction in cytopathic effect,and the cytotoxic concentration of the fraction was found to be 250 μg/mL.RT-PCR analyses indicated that the reduction in viral mRNA synthesis in fraction treated infected cells was much higher than the viral infected control cells.Conclusions:Luteolin and apigenin rich ethanolic fraction from C.dactylon can be utilized as a potential therapeutic agent against CHIKV infection as the fraction does not show cytotoxicity while inhibiting the virus.Krishnan Saravana Murali Srinivasan Sivasubramanian Savariar Vincent Shanmugaraj Bala Murugan Bupesh Giridaran Sundaram Dinesh Palani Gunasekaran Kaveri Krishnasamy Ramalingam Sathishkumar 2015Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2015,8,5:5

13Strategies for Revitalization of Traditional Medicine显示文摘Traditional medicine (TM) plays an inevitable role in drug discovery and development. Most of the therapeutically useful molecules used in the present day are inspired from TM. Herbal drugs are the oldest forms of medicines used for the treatment of various ailments and the TM of every country has a long history of their usage. To develop more data on their quality, safety, and efficacy, so also to improve the consumer's need of modern days several thrust areas of research are to be focused on the development of TM. 14Globose basal cells for spinal cord regeneration显示文摘Spinal cord injury(SCI) is a devastating condition with loss of motor and sensory functions below the injury level. Cell based therapies are experimented in pre-clinical studies around the world. Neural stem cells are located intra-cranially in subventricular zone and hippocampus which are highly invasive sources. The olfactory epithelium is a neurogenic tissue where neurogenesis takes place throughout the adul life by a population of stem/progenitor cells. Easily accessible olfactory neuroepithelial stem/progenitor cells are an attractive cell source for transplantation in SCI. Globose basal cells(GBCs) were isolated from rat olfactory epithelium, characterized by flow cytometry and immunohistochemically. These cells were further studied for neurosphere formation and neuronal induction. T_(10) laminectomy was done to create drop-weight SCI in rats. On the 9 ^(th )day following SCI, 5 × 10~5 cells were transplanted into injured rat spina cord. The outcome of transplantation was assessed by the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan(BBB) locomotor rating scale, motor evoked potential and histological observation. GBCs expressed neural stem cell markers nestin, SOX2, NCAM and also mesenchymal stem cell markers(CD29, CD54, CD90, CD73, CD105). These cells formed neurosphere, a culture characteristics of NSCs and on induction, differentiated cells expressed neuronal markers βIII tubulin, microtubule-associated protein 2, neuronal nuclei, and neurofilament. GBCs transplanted rats exhibited hindlimb motor recovery as confirmed by BBB score and gastrocnemius muscle electromyography amplitude was increased compared to controls. 16Mosquito larvicidal properties of Orthosiphon thymiflorus(Roth)Sleesen.(Family:Labiatae)against mosquito vectors,Anopheles stephensi,Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti(Diptera:Culicidae)显示文摘Objective:To determine the mosquito larvicidal activities of hexane,chloroform,ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol leaf extract of Orthosiphon thymiflorus(O.thymiflorus) against Anopheles stephensi(An.stephensi),Culex quinquefasciatus(Cx.quinquefasciatus) and Aedes aegypti (Ae.aegypti).Methods:The larvicidal activity was assayed against three mosquito species at various concentrations ranging from(50-450 ppm) under the laboratory conditions.The LC50 and LC90value of the O.thymiflorus leaf extract was determined by Probit analysis.Results:The LC50 values of hexane,chloroform,ethyl acetate,acetone and methanol extract of O.thymiflorus third instar larvae of An.stephensi were LC50= 201.39,178.76,158.06,139.22 and 118.74 ppm; Cx.quinquefasciatus were LC50=228.13,209.72.183.35,163.55 and 149.96 ppm and Ae.aegypti were LC50=215.65,197.91,175.05,154.80 and 137.26 ppm,respectively.Maximum larvicidal activity was observed in the methanolic extract followed by acetone,ethyl acetate chloroform and hexane extract.The larval mortality was observed after 24 h exposure.No mortality was observed in control.Conclusions:The present results suggest that the effective plant crude extracts have potential to be used as an ideal eco-friendly approach for the control of mosquito vectors.This study provides the first report on the larvicidal activity of this plant crude solvent extract of against An.stephensi,Cx.quinquefasciatus and Ae.aegypti mosquitoes.K Kovendan K Murugan S Vincent Donald R Barnard 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,4:2

18Spinosad and neem seed kernel extract as bio-controlling agents for malarial vector,Anopheles stephensi and non-biting midge,Chironomus circumdatus显示文摘Objective:Midge egg masses are reported to support non-pathogenic strains of the cholera pathogen.Vibrio cholera(V.cholera).Mosquito born diseases have been reported to cause millions of death worldwide.The present research reveals the toxicity effect of spinosad and neem seed kernel extract(NSKE) against different larval stages of Anopheles stephensi(An.stephensi) and Chironomus circumdatus(Ch.circumdatus).Methods:The neem seeds were collected from Marudamalai hills,Bharathiar University,Coimbatore,India.Neem seed kernels were powdered,extracted and diluted for different concentrations(2 ppm to 10 ppm).Spinosad was purchased from Kalpatharu pesticide Limited,Coimbatore,Tamil Nadu,India and thoroughly mixed with distilled water to prepare various concentrations(0.01 to 0.08 ppm) and used for bioassay.Results:The results depict that spinosad is more toxic in lower concentrations when compared to NSKE and mosquitoes are more susceptible than chironomids.Lethal concentrations were evaluated using the observed mortality.The lowest LC50 value obtained from spinosad against An.stephensi and Ch.circumdalus were 0.002 05 ppm and 0.008 91 ppm.This study investigated on effect of Spinosad and NSKE on the biology of mosquito.The immature stages of both species were susceptible to Spinosad and NSKE.Spinosad and NSKE in individual as well as combined treatment provided additional days in development for mosquitoes.Conclusions:The results conclude that Spinosad and NSKE are potential larvicides against An.stephensi and Ch. circumdatus.Kumar AN Murugan K Madhiyazhagan P Prabhu K 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,8:2

20Clinical profile and outcomes of pediatric endogenous endophthalmitis: A report of 11 cases from South India显示文摘AIM To study the clinical profile and outcomes of pediatric endogenous endophthalmitis from a tertiary eye hospital in South India.METHODS A total of 13 eyes of 11 children presented to us with varied symptoms and presentations of endogenous endophthalmitis, over a five-year period from January 2010 to December 2015 were studied. Except for two eyes of a patient, vitreous aspirates were cultured from all 11 eyes to isolate the causative organism. These eleven eyes also received intravitreal injections. All patients were treated with systemic antibiotics. RESULTS Two cases had bilateral endophthalmitis. Ages ranged from 4 d to 11 years. Five cases were undiagnosed and treated, before being referred to our center. Ten of the 13 eyes underwent a core vitrectomy. The vitrectomy was done at an average on the second day after presenting(range 0-20 d). Five of the 11 vitreous aspirates showed isolates. The incriminating organisms were bacteria in three and fungus in two. An underlying predisposing factor was found in seven patients. At a mean follow-up 21.5 mo, outcome was good in 7 eyes of 6 cases(54%), five eyes of four cases(38%) ended up with phthisis bulbi while one child died of systemic complications. CONCLUSION Endogenous endophthalmitis is a challenge for ophtha-lmologists.
