4Gastrointestinal radiation injury:Prevention and treatment显示文摘With the recent advances in detection and treatment of cancer,there is an increasing emphasis on the efficacy and safety aspects of cancer therapy.Radiation therapy is a common treatment for a wide variety of cancers,either alone or in combination with other treatments.Ionising radiation injury to the gastrointestinal tract is a frequent side effect of radiation therapy and a considerable proportion of patients suffer acute or chronic gastrointestinal symptoms as a result.These side effects often cause morbidity and may in some cases lower the efficacy of radiotherapy treatment.Radiation injury to the gastrointestinal tract can be minimised by either of two strategies:technical strategies which aim to physically shift radiation dose away from the normal intestinal tissues,and biological strategies which aim to modulate the normal tissue response to ionising radiation or to increase its resistance to it.Although considerable improvement in the safety of radiotherapy treatment has been achieved through the use of modern optimised planning and delivery techniques,biological techniques may offer additional further promise.Different agents have been used to prevent or minimize the severity of gastrointestinal injury induced by ionising radiation exposure,including biological,chemical and pharmacological agents.In this review we aim to discuss various technical strategies to prevent gastrointestinal injury during cancer radiotherapy,examine the different therapeutic options for acute and chronic gastrointestinal radiation injury and outline some examples of research directions and considerations for prevention at a pre-clinical level.Abobakr K Shadad Frank J Sullivan Joseph D Martin Laurence J Egan 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,2:32

6Effective simulation of flexible lateral boundaries in two-and three-dimensional DEM simulations显示文摘Discrete element method (DEM) models to simulate laboratory element tests play an important role in advancing our understanding of the mechanics of granular material response, including bonded or cemented, particulate materials. Comparisons of the macro-scale response observed in a real physical test and a 'virtual' DEM-simulated test can calibrate or validate DEM models. The detailed, particle scale information provided in the DEM simulation can then be used to develop our understanding of the material behaviour. It is important to accurately model the physical test boundary conditions in these DEM simulations. This paper specifically considers triaxial tests as these tests are commonly used in soil mechanics. In a triaxial test, the test specimen of granular material is enclosed within a flexible latex membrane that allows the material to deform freely during testing, while maintaining a specified stress condition. Triaxial tests can only be realistically simulated in 3D DEM codes, however analogue, 2D, biaxial DEM simulations are also often considered as it is easier to visualize particle interactions in two dimensions. This paper describes algorithms to simulate the lateral boundary conditions imposed by the latex membrane used in physical triaxial tests in both 2D and 3D DEM simulations. The importance of carefully considering the lateral boundary conditions in DEM simulations is illustrated by considering a 2D biaxial test on a specimen of frictional unbonded disks and a 3D triaxial test on a bonded (cemented) specimen of spheres. 9Performance-based seismic design of nonstructural building components:The next frontier of earthquake engineering显示文摘With the development and implementation of performance-based earthquake engineering,harmonization of performance levels between structural and nonstructural components becomes vital. Even if the structural components of a building achieve a continuous or immediate occupancy performance level after a seismic event,failure of architectural,mechanical or electrical components can lower the performance level of the entire building system. This reduction in performance caused by the vulnerability of nonstructural components has been observed during recent earthquakes worldwide. Moreover,nonstructural damage has limited the functionality of critical facilities,such as hospitals,following major seismic events. The investment in nonstructural components and building contents is far greater than that of structural components and framing. Therefore,it is not surprising that in many past earthquakes,losses from damage to nonstructural components have exceeded losses from structural damage. Furthermore,the failure of nonstructural components can become a safety hazard or can hamper the safe movement of occupants evacuating buildings,or of rescue workers entering buildings. In comparison to structural components and systems,there is relatively limited information on the seismic design of nonstructural components. Basic research work in this area has been sparse,and the available codes and guidelines are usually,for the most part,based on past experiences,engineering judgment and intuition,rather than on objective experimental and analytical results. Often,design engineers are forced to start almost from square one after each earthquake event: to observe what went wrong and to try to prevent repetitions. This is a consequence of the empirical nature of current seismic regulations and guidelines for nonstructural components. This review paper summarizes current knowledge on the seismic design and analysis of nonstructural building components,identifying major knowledge gaps that will need to be filled by future research. 10A new feathered maniraptoran dinosaur fossil that fills a morphological gap in avian origin显示文摘Recent fossil discoveries have substantially reduced the morphological gap between non-avian and avian dinosaurs, yet avians including Archaeopteryx differ from non-avian theropods in their limb proportions. In particular, avians have proportionally longer and more robust forelimbs that are capable of supporting a large aerodynamic surface. Here we report on a new maniraptoran dinosaur, Anchiornis huxleyi gen. et sp. nov., based on a specimen collected from lacustrine deposits of uncertain age in western Liaoning, China. With an estimated mass of 110 grams, Anchiornis is the smallest known non-avian theropod dinosaur. It exhibits some wrist features indicative of high mobility, presaging the wing-folding mechanisms seen in more derived birds and suggesting rapid evolution of the carpus. Otherwise, Anchiornis is intermediate in general morphology between non-avian and avian dinosaurs, particularly with regard to relative forelimb length and thickness, and represents a transitional step toward the avian condition. 13Effect of sample size on the response of DEM samples with a realistic grading显示文摘This paper shows that for DEM simulations of triaxial tests using samples with a grading that is representative of a real soil,the sample size significantly influences the observed material response.Four DEM samples with identical initial states were produced:three cylindrical samples bounded by rigid walls and one bounded by a cubical periodic cell.When subjected to triaxial loading,the samples with rigid boundaries were more dilative,stiffer and reached a higher peak stress ratio than the sample enclosed by periodic boundaries.For the rigid-wall samples,dilatancy increased and stiffness decreased with increasing sample size.The periodic sample was effectively homogeneous.The void ratio increased and the contact density decreased close to the rigid walls.This heterogeneity reduced with increasing sample size.The positions of the critical state lines(CSLs) of the overall response in e-log p' space were sensitive to the sample size,although no difference was observed between their slopes.The critical states of the interior regions of the rigid-wall-bounded samples approached that of the homogeneous periodic sample with increasing sample size.The ultimate strength of the material at the critical state is independent of sample size.Xin Huang Kevin J.Hanley Catherine O'Sullivan Fiona C.Y.Kwok 2014Particuology2014,12,4:12

16Reviewing the Technical Designs for Experiments with Ultraviolet-B Radiation and Impact on Photosynthesis,DNA and Secondary Metabolism显示文摘The ultraviolet-B(UV-B) portion of sunlight has received much attention in the last three decades,because radiation from this spectral region increases due to the stratospheric ozone depletion,which results from increases of chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere.Plant responses to UV-B exposure vary greatly and the interpretation of and comparison between studies is hindered,mainly by the contrasting experimental conditions used and interactive factors such as low light levels and possible artifacts due to the artificial experimental conditions.It seems likely that increases in solar UV-B radiation of the magnitude anticipated under current stratospheric ozone projections will not significantly inhibit photosynthesis and cause DNA damage in plants.This is in part due to the wellevolved protection mechanisms present in most plant species.One of the significant plant responses to UV-B is changes in foliar secondary chemistry,which could be translated into significant effects at higher trophic levels through plant-herbivore interactions and decomposition.Enhanced UV-B radiation due to stratospheric ozone depletion could also cause morphological changes that would affect competitive interactions,especially if contrasting UV-B sensitivity exists among the competitors.Chenping Xu Joe H. 19Imaging of bone metastasis: An update显示文摘Early detection of skeletal metastasis is critical for accurate staging and optimal treatment. This paper briefly reviews our current understanding of the biological mechanisms through which tumours metastasise to bone and describes the available imaging methods to diagnose bone metastasis and monitor response to treatment.
