| 1 | Synthesis, properties, and applications of graphene oxide/reduced graphene oxide and their nanocomposites显示文摘Thanks to their remarkable mechanical, electrical, thermal, and barrier properties, graphene-based nanocomposites have been a hot area of research in the past decade. Because of their simple top-down synthesis, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have opened new possibilities for gas barrier, membrane separation, and stimuli-response characteristics in nanocomposites. Herein, we review the synthesis techniques most commonly used to produce these graphene derivatives, discuss how synthesis affects their key material properties, and highlight some examples of nanocomposites with unique and impressive properties. We specifically highlight their performances in separation applications, stimuli-responsive materials, anti-corrosion coatings, and energy storage. Finally, we discuss the outlook and remaining challenges in the field of practical industrial-scale production and use of graphene-derivative-based polymer nanocomposites. | Andrew T. | 3 | Distinctive melt activity and chromite mineralization in Luobusa and Purang ophiolites, southern Tibet: constraints from trace element compositions of chromite and olivine显示文摘To investigate the factors controlling the mineralization in ophiolites we systematically compared the petrology and mineral compositions of the harzburgites/lherzolites, dunites and chromitites in the Luobusa and Purang ophiolites. Generally, the petrological features and trace element compositions of chromite and olivine in peridotite and chromitite are distinctly different between the two ophiolites.In Luobusa, boninitic melts are inferred to have interacted with the harzburgites and modified the distributions of some trace elements(e.g., Ni, Mn and V) in chromite and olivine. The subsequently formed dunites and chromitites experienced significant elemental exchange. In contrast, the Purang ophiolite contains a wider range of chromitite compositions and records diverse melt activities, such as the growth of relatively abundant secondary clinopyroxene. The metasomatic melts were enriched in Al and depleted in Si, Na and highly incompatible trace elements(e.g., Nb, Zr). Such melts resemble MORBlike melts proposed in the literature but are assumed to be more hydrous than typical MORB because of presence of hydrous minerals. The parental magmas of the Purang dunites and intermediate chromitites are inferred to be compositionally intermediate between boninitic and MORB-like melts. In addition,the more refractory nature of the Luobusa harzburgites facilitated a high Cr concentration gradient with the interacting melts, making it easier to increase Cr in the melts. Crystallization of clinopyroxene and amphibole in the Purang ophiolite accommodated significant amounts of Cr and water, respectively,and negatively affected Cr concentration and chromite crystallization. | 4 | Pollen-inferred vegetation and environmental changes in the central Tibetan Plateau since 8200 yr BP显示文摘The ecotone between alpine steppe and meadow in the central Tibetan Plateau is sensitive to climate changes. Here we used the pollen records from three lakes in this region to reconstruct the evolution of local vegetation and climate since 8200 cal. yr BP. The history of temperature and precipitation was reconstructed quantitatively with multi-bioclimatic indexes and a transfer function from pollen records. Results show that the steppe/meadow dominated during the period of 8200―6500 cal. yr BP, especially 8200―7200 cal. yr BP, indicating the central Tibetan Plateau was controlled by strong monsoon. The steppe dominated during the periods of 6000―4900, 4400―3900, and 2800―2400 cal. yr BP. The steppe decreased gradually and the meadow expanded during the period of 4900―4400 cal. yr BP. Three century-scale drought events occurred during 5800―4900, 4400―3900 and 2800 cal. yr BP, respectively. The first time when the regional climate shifted to the present level was at 6500 cal. yr BP in the central Plateau. Since 3000 cal. yr BP, the temperature and precipitation have decreased gradually to the present level. | 5 | Geochemical Signatures of Early Paleogene Source Rocks in the Sanshui Basin, South China显示文摘The Honggang member of the early Paleogene Buxin Formation is the main source rock in the Sanshui Basin, characterized by organic-rich black shales with the cyclic recurrence of organic- poor sediments. The geochemical characteristics of the Honggang member have been documented to determine the organic matter types and depositional environments in this paper. The organic matter of the black shales mainly consists of a mixture of land plant-derived and phytoplankton-derived organic matter. Total organic carbon content (TOC)–sulfur–iron (Fe) relationships suggest that the organic- rich black shales were deposited under dysoxic-to-euxinic water conditions. The time that iron minerals remained in contact with H2S in anoxic waters possibly influenced the formation of syngenetic pyrite, and organic carbon controlled the formation of diagenetic pyrite. Organic-poor intervals usually show pyrite sulfur enrichment and higher degree of pyritization values relative to low organic carbon contents. This resulted from HS– diffusing downward from overlying organic-rich sediments and formed Fe sulfides through reactions with sufficient Fe. Trace elements generally exhibit low concentrations and little TOC dependence, suggesting some degree of depletion in these elements in the early Paleogene sediments of the Sanshui Basin. | 6 | Seismogenesis and occurrence of earthquakes as observed by temporally continuous gravity variations in China显示文摘In the last decade and a half, a number of earthquakes of magnitude 4-5 have occurred in the Beijing_Tianjin_Tangshan_Zhangjiakou (BTTZ) region. On the basis of the analysis of the temporally continuous gravity variation data principally from the Baijiatuan (BJTN) semi_permanent gravity base station, a general picture of gravity variation related to the seismogenesis and occurrence of earthquakes has emerged.\;As gravity variation is generally observed on the earth’s surface, the predominant influence is that of the near_surface groundwater. The subsurface fluids are distributed throughout all depths in the crust and respond to the seismogenic processes of earthquakes as well. The influence of the subsurface fluid on gravity variation is, therefore, of equal importance. The fluids, which include the near_surface groundwater and the subsurface fluids distributed throughout all depths in the crust, play a more important role in the gravity variations in terms of the seismogenesis and occurrence of earthquakes than previously realized.\;The abundance of accumulated data shows that the dilatancy instability (IPE) model seems not applicable at least to the seismogenesis and occurrence of earthquakes in the BTTZ region. In order to reflect the physical reality, the earlier proposed combined dilatancy model requires modification. The seismogenic area in the BTTZ region may be modelled as a large pre_stressed volume of a fluid_filled poroelastic medium, including not only the pre_stressed volume surrounding the impending rupture zone but also the volume containing the rupture of the fault zone itself. The pre_stressed volume outside the impending rupture zone is under a state of relatively small change of the pre_existing regional tectonic stress, while the volume containing the impending rupture zone is an induced region of very high local stress concentration, and/or pore over_pressure.\;The calculated gravity variations based on the modified combined dilatancy model (MCDM) with the known physical parameters of the region resemble the observed residual gravity variations. Apparently the residual gravity variations, in addition to responding to the deep_seated seismogenesis and occurrence of earthquakes, predominantly respond to the near_surface groundwater, and the subsurface fluids, which themselves also respond to the seismogenesis and occurrence of earthquakes. On the basis of comparison between the calculated MCDM gravity variations and the observed residual gravity variations, the change of the regional tectonic stress field for the earthquakes of magnitude 4-5 in the BTTZ region could be approximately estimated to be in the neighbourhood of 5%-7%.\;It is apparent that simultaneously monitoring the temporally continuous variations of the near_surface groundwater, subsurface fluids, and gravity coupled with modelling would provide vital information on the history and evolution of the seismogenic processes about 10 months to 1 year prior to the occurrence of an earthquake of magnitude 4-5 and tens of years prior to that of an earthquake of magnitude 7-8 such as the Haicheng earthquake in 1975 and the Tangshan earthquake in 1976 in the BTTZ region. | 10 | Geographical distribution of red and green Noctiluca scintillans显示文摘The dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans is one of the most important and abundant red tide organisms and it is distributed world-wide. It occurs in two forms. Red Noctiluca is heterotrophic and fills the role of one of the microzooplankton grazers in the foodweb. In contrast, green Noctiluca contains a photosynthetic symbiont Pedinomonas noctilucae (a prasinophyte), but it also feeds on other plankton when the food supply is abundant. In this review, we document the global distribution of these two forms and include the first maps of their global distribution. Red Noctiluca occurs widely in the temperate to sub-tropical coastal regions of the world. It occurs over a wide temperature range of about 10°C to 25°C and at higher salinities (generally not in estuaries). It is particularly abundant in high productivity areas such as upwelling or eutrophic areas where diatoms dominate since they are its preferred food source. Green Noctiluca is much more restricted to a temperature range of 25°C-30°C and mainly occurs in tropical waters of Southeast Asia, Bay of Bengal (east coast of India), in the eastern, western and northern Arabian Sea, the Red Sea, and recently it has become very abundant in the Gulf of Oman. Red and green Noctiluca do overlap in their distribution in the eastern, northern and western Arabian Sea with a seasonal shift from green Noctiluca in the cooler winter convective mixing, higher productivity season, to red Noctiluca in the more oligotrophic warmer summer season. | P. | 11 | Late Quaternary palaeoenvironmental changes documented by microfaunas and shell stable isotopes in the southern Pearl River Delta plain,South China显示文摘Ahigh resolution study of sediments,microfaunas(ostracods and foraminifers),and stable isotopes of ostracod shells from core PRD05,sampled from the Da’ao plain of the Pearl River Delta,provides new data about palaeoenvironmental changes during the Late Quaternary.The basal fluvial gravelly sediments of the core,representing the lowest deposits of the Quaternary at the core site,were possibly formed prior to the transgression associated with the last interglacial stage.This fluvial setting changed into a marginal marine setting during the last interglacial stage,any record of calcareous fossils were destroyed by subsequent dissolution during the last glacial phase,when the upper part of the deltaic sediments experienced subaerial oxidation,indicated by a mottled clay layer in the core.The postglacial sealevel rise in the South China Sea began at16,700 cal yr B.P.During the first phase of sea-level rise(from ~16,700 to 10,100 cal yr B.P.),a swamp environment developed at the core site.At ~10,100 cal yr B.P.,marine waters intruded onto the Da’ao plain and reached the core site through the Modaomen channel.This timing was earlier than in other parts of the Pearl River Delta.Since then,a semi-enclosed estuarine environment developed and was maintained until ~5560 cal yr B.P.During this transgressive interval,short-term environmental fluctuations can be recognized based on microfauna and shell geochemical data.From ~10,100 to 8630 cal yr B.P.,the sea-level rose,which was followed by a fall from ~8630 to 8520 cal yr B.P.An expanded transgression occurred between ~8520 and 7900 cal yr B.P.The time intervals from ~8520 to 8200 cal yr B.P.and from ~8080 to 7900 cal yr B.P.were marked by peak transgression.From ~7900 to 5560 cal yr B.P.,the core site generally showed a reduced marine influence and enhanced freshwater input.A fluvial environment developed from ~5560 to 3100 cal yr B.P.,and was succeeded by an alluvial plain setting. | Liu Chunlian Franz T. | 12 | Angiosperm phylogeny inferred from sequences of four mitochondrial genes显示文摘An angiosperm phylogeny was reconstructed in a maximum likelihood analysis of sequences of four mitochondrial genes,atp1,matR,nad5,and rps3,from 380 species that represent 376 genera and 296 families of seed plants.It is largely congruent with the phylogeny of angiosperms reconstructed from chloroplast genes atpB,matK,and rbcL,and nuclear 18S rDNA.The basalmost lineage consists of Amborella and Nymphaeales(including Hydatellaceae).Austrobaileyales follow this clade and are sister to the mesangiosperms,which include Chloranthaceae,Ceratophyllum,magnoliids,monocots,and eudicots.With the exception of Chloranthaceae being sister to Ceratophyllum,relationships among these five lineages are not well supported.In eudicots,Ranunculales,Sabiales,Proteales,Trochodendrales,Buxales,Gunnerales,Saxifragales,Vitales,Berberidopsidales,and Dilleniales form a basal grade of lines that diverged before the diversification of rosids and asterids.Within rosids,the COM(Celastrales-Oxalidales-Malpighiales) clade is sister to malvids(or rosid II),instead of to the nitrogen-fixing clade as found in all previous large-scale molecular analyses of angiosperms.Santalales and Caryophyllales are members of an expanded asterid clade.This study shows that the mitochondrial genes are informative markers for resolving relationships among genera,families,or higher rank taxa across angiosperms.The low substitution rates and low homoplasy levels of the mitochondrial genes relative to the chloroplast genes,as found in this study,make them particularly useful for reconstructing ancient phylogenetic relationships.A mitochondrial gene-based angiosperm phylogeny provides an independent and essential reference for comparison with hypotheses of angiosperm phylogeny based on chloroplast genes,nuclear genes,and non-molecular data to reconstruct the underlying organismal phylogeny. | Yin-Long QIU Libo LI Bin WANG Jia-Yu XUE Tory A. DESIGN: Prospective,comparative control study. METHODS: Aqueous humors were collected from 32 eyes of 32 patients for either active PCV or CNV. Among them,11 eyes had active and symptomatic PCV,12 eyes had active CNV secondary to AMD,and nine eyes had active CNV of pathologic myopia. Levels of VEGF and PEDF were determined by commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. A group of 10 aqueous samples from 10 patients who underwent cataract surgery without other ocular or systemic diseases comprised the controls. RESULTS: VEGF concentrations in aqueous humor were markedly increased in patients with PCV,CNV of AMD,and CNV of myopia when compared with the controls (analysis of variance ANOVA,P < .001). VEGF levels in eyes with PCV were,however,significantly lower than those of exudative AMD (P=.045)-. The PEDF levels were also significantly different among the groups (ANOVA,P=.001),and we observed increased levels in PCV,CNV of AMD,and CNV of myopia. CONCLUSIONS: VEGF and PEDF factors were coexpressed and increased with positive correlation in aqueous humor of eyes with active PCV. | 15 | 血糖代谢障碍、体重指数和腰臀比对中国瘦型人群系统性高血压患病率的影响显示文摘The purpose of this study was to explore whether dysglycemia, and/or an increased body mass index, and/or an increased waist/hip ratio increased the risk of hypertension in a lean population of South China. The association among dysglycemia, obesity, and hypertension has been well documented in Western populations. A stratified cluster sampling method was used according to the National Diabetes Mellitus Epidemiology Survey Program in 1998. Blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, and plasma glucose were measured 2 hours after 75-g oral glucose consumption using the enzymatic method in the morning. Body height, weight, and waist and hip measurements were also collected for the survey. The criteria for the diagnosis of hypertension and diabetes mellitus, including impaired glucose tolerance(IGT), were those published by the World Health Organization in 1999. A total of 11,402 participants were included in the investigation(5,195 men and 6,207 women; age 20 to 74 years). A total of 1,775 cases of hypertension were confirmed in the survey. The prevalence of hypertension was significantly higher in those with diabetes mellitus than in those with a normal blood glucose level, in those with IGT than in those with normal glucose tolerance test findings, and in obese participants than in those with a normal weight(45.5% vs 14.4% , 32.2% vs 14.5% , and 20.6% vs 12.1% , respectively). Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that age and gender-adjusted odds ratio of hypertension was 2.24(95% confidence interval 1.88 to 2.68) with IGT compared with those without IGT. The odds ratio for hypertension associated with an increased body mass index and waist/hip ratio was 1.19(95% confidence interval 1.17 to 1.21) and 1.08(95% confidence interval 1.07 to 1.09), respectively. In conclusion, the data from an epidemiologic study in South China demonstrated that dysglycemia and increased body mass index and/or waist/hip ratio increase the risk of hypertension even in a lean Chinese population. | Lin S. The primary abiotic stress is drought along with high temperatures. The objectives of the present study were to monitor gene expression in developing kernels in response to drought stress and to identify drought-responsive genes for possible use in germplasm assessment. The maize breeding line Tex6 was used, and gene expression profiles were analyzed in developing kernels under drought stress verses well-watered conditions at the stages of 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 d after pollination (DAP) using the 70 mer maize oligo-arrays. A total of 9 573 positive array spots were detected with unique gene IDs, and 7 988 were common in both stressed and well-watered samples. Expression patterns of some genes in several stress response-associated pathways, including abscisic acid, jasmonic acid and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, were examined, and these specific genes were responsive to drought stress positively. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction validated microarray expression data. The comparison between Tex6 and B73 revealed that there were significant differences in specific gene expression, patterns and levels. | 18 | Overview of surface ozone variability in East Asia-North Pacific region during IGAC/APARE(1994—1996)显示文摘Surface ozone(O\-3) was measured at Oki Island(Japan), Cheju Island(South Korea), Lanyu Island(Taiwan Province, China), Cape D’Aguilar(Hong Kong SAR) and Lin’an, Longfenshan, Waliguan(China mainland) during January 1994—December 1996 as a component of IGAC/APARE(International Global Atmospheric Chemistry/East Asia-North Pacific Regional Experiment). This paper gave a joint discussion on the observational results at these stations over the study region. Investigations showed that the average of surface O 3 mixing ratios at the seven sites are 47.9±15.8, 48.1±17.9, 30.2±16.4, 31.6±17.5, 36.3±17.5, 34.8±11.5 and 48.2±9.5 ppbv, respectively. Significant diurnal variations of surface O 3 have been observed at Oki, Cheju, D’Aguilar, Lin’an and Longfenshan. Their annual averaged diurnal differences range from 8 to 23 ppbv and differ in each season. Surface O 3 at Lanyu and Waliguan do not show strong diurnal variability. Seasonal cycles of surface O 3 showed difference at the temperate and the subtropical remote sites. Oki has a summer minimum-spring maximum, while Lanyu has a summer minimum-autumn maximum. The suburban sites at D’Aguilar and Lin’an report high-level O 3 in autumn and low level O 3 in summer. Surface O 3 remains high in autumn and low in winter at the rural site Longfenshan. For the global background station Waliguan, surface O 3 exhibits a broad spring-summer maximum and autumn-winter minimum. The backward air trajectories to these sites have shown different pathways of long-range transport of air pollution from East Asia Continent to North Pacific Ocean. Surface O 3 was found to be strongly and positively correlated with CO at Oki and Lanyu, especially in spring and autumn, reflecting the substantial photochemical buildup of O\-3 on a regional scale.
