Source mechanism of strong aftershocks (M_s≥5.6) of the 2008/05/12 Wenchuan earthquake and the implication for seismotectonics显示文摘Dozens of >M5, hundreds of >M4, and much more >M3 aftershocks occurred after the 2008/05/12 Wenchuan earthquake, which were well recorded by permanent and portable seismic stations. After relocated with P arrival, the >M3 aftershocks show two trends of distribution, with most of the aftershocks located along the north-east strike consistent with Longmenshan fault system, yet there is a north-west trend around the epicenter. It seems that substantially more aftershocks occur in regions with crystalline bedrocks. Then we collected waveform data from National Digital Seismograph Network and regional seismograph network of China, and employed 'Cut and Paste' method to obtain focal mechanisms and depths of the big aftershocks (M≥5.6). While most of those aftershocks show thrust mechanism, there are some strike slip earthquakes in the northern-most end of the rupture. Focal mechanisms show that the events located on the southern part of central Beichuan-Yingxiu Fault (BY) are mainly thrust earthquakes, which is consistent with initial mechanism of the main shock rupture. In the north part the aftershocks along the BY are also dominated by thrust slip, which is quite different from the right slip rupture of the main shock. Around Qingchuan-Pingwu Fault, the focal mechanisms are dominated by right-slip rupture with large depths (~18 km). So we suspected that in the north part the main shock might rupture on two faults: Beichuan Fault and Qingchuan-Pingwu Fault. The complex pattern of aftershock mechanisms argues for presence of a complicated fault system in the Longmenshan area.ZHENG Yong1,2,MA HongSheng3,Lü Jian4,NI SiDao5,LI YingChun6 & WEI ShengJi2 1 Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Wuhan 430077,China 2 Institute of Geophysics,Chinese Earthquake Administration,Beijing 100086,China 3 Institute of Earthquake Science,Chinese Earthquake Administration,Beijing 100086,China 4 Earthquake Administration of Jiangxi Province,Nanchang 330039,China 5 School of Earth and Space Science,University of Science and Technology of China,Hefei 230026,China 6 Earthquake Administration of Jiangsu Province,Nanjing 210014,China 2009Science China Earth Sciences2009,52,6:100

Construction of a genetic linkage map for cotton based on SRAP显示文摘A genetic linkage map of cotton was constructed with a newly developed molecular marker-SRAP (sequence-related amplified polymorphism) using a population consisting of 129 F2 individuals derived from the interspecific cross of Handan208 Pima90. A total of 136 primer pairs were used to detect polymorphisms between the two parents and 76 primer pairs with better polymorphisms were picked out to analyze the F2 population. 285 polymorphic bands were generated in total with an average of 3.75 polymorphic bands per pair of primers. The primer pair showing most polymorphic bands was the combination of me3 and em2, which produced 13 polymorphic bands. The 285 loci were used to construct linkage map with MAPMAKER/EXP3.0 and 237 loci were mapped at a LOD≥3.0 on 39 linkage groups. The total length of the map is 3030.7 cM, covering 65.4% of the whole cotton genome, and the average distance between adjacent markers is 12.79 cM. All the markers are distributed evenly among the linkage groups without clustering of loci. This is the first linkage map of cotton comprised of SRAP markers.LIN Zhongxu, ZHANG Xianlong, NIE Yichun, HE Daohua & WU Maoqing National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan 430070, China 2003Chinese Science Bulletin2003,48,19:111
Genetic basis and breeding application of clonal diversity and dual reproduction modes in polyploid Carassius auratus gibelio显示文摘A unisexual species is generally associated with polyploidy, and reproduced by a unisexual reproduction mode, such as gyno- genesis, hybridogenesis or parthenogenesis. Compared with other unisexual and polyploid species, gibel carp (Carassius au- ratus gibelio) has a higher ploidy level of hexaploid. It has undergone several successive rounds of genome polyploidy, and experienced an additional, more recent genome duplication event. More significantly, the dual reproduction modes, including gynogenesis and sexual reproduction, have been demonstrated to coexist in the polyploid gibel carp. This article reviews the genetic basis concerning polyploidy origin, clonal diversity and dual reproduction modes, and outlines the progress in new va- riety breeding and gene identification involved in the reproduction and early development. The data suggests that gibel carp are under an evolutionary trajectory of diploidization. As a novel evolutionary developmental (Evo-Devo) biology model, this work highlights future perspectives about the functional divergence of duplicated genes and the sexual origin of vertebrate animals.GUI JianFang* & ZHOU Li State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology, Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan 430072, China 2010Science China(Life Sciences)2010,53,4:62
Analysis of in vivo patterns of caspase 3 gene expression in primary hepatocellular carcinoma and its relationship to p21^(WAF1) expression and hepatic apoptosis显示文摘AIM To detect the expression of caspase 3gene in primary human hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)and investigate its relationship to p21WAF1gene expression and HCC apoptosis.METHODS In situ hybridization was employedto determine caspase 3 and p21WAF1expression inHCC.In situ end-labeling was used to detecthepatocytic apoptosis in HCC.RESULTS Twenty-one of 39(53.8%)cases ofHCC were found to express caspase 3transcripts,while 45.2% of HCC failed toexpress caspase 3.Non-cancerous adjacent livertissues showed more positive caspase 3(87.5%,7/8)as compared with HCC(P<0.05).The expression of caspase 3 is correlated withHCC differentiation,72.2%(13/18)ofmoderately to highly differentiated HCC showedcaspase 3 transcripts positive, while only 38.1%of poorly differentiated HCC harbored caspase 3transcripts(P<0.05).No relationship wasfound between caspase 3 expression and tumorsize or grade or metastasis, although 52.5%(5/8)of HCC with metastasis were caspase 3positive and a little higher than that with nometastasis(51.6%,P>0.05).Expression of caspase 3 alone did not affect the apoptosisindex(AI)of HCC.The AI was 7.12%o in caspase3-positive tumors(n=21),while in caspase 3-negative cases(n=18)6.59%0(P>0.05).Expression of caspase 3 clearly segregated withp21WAF1positive tumors as compared withp21WAF1-negative cases(16 of 23,69.6% versus5 of 16,31.3%)with statistical significance(P=0.017).In the cases with positive caspase 3and negative p21WAF1,the Al was found slightlyhigher, but with no statistical significance, thanthat with expression of p21WAF1and caspase 3(7.21‰ vs 6.98‰,P>0.05).CONCLUSION Loss of caspase 3 expressionmay contribute to HCC carcinogenesis, althoughthe expression of caspase 3 does not correlatewell with cell apoptosis in HCC.p21WAF1may bemerely one of the inhibitors which can reducecaspase 3 mediated cell apoptosis in HCCs.Bao Hua Sun Jun Zhang Bao JǜWang Xi Ping Zhao You Kun Wang Zhi Qun Yu Dong Liang Yang Lian Jie Hao Department of Clinical Immunology,Tongji Hospital,Tongji Medical University,Wuhan 430030,Hubei Province,China 2000World Journal of Gastroenterology2000,6,3:65
Influence of the impounding process of the Three Gorges Reservoir up to water level 172.5m on water eutrophication in the Xiangxi Bay显示文摘The water level of the Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR) rose to 172.5 m in two stages from September to November,2008.The hydrodynamic parameters and water quality parameters(e.g.flow velocity, temperature, turbidity and nutrient content) had been continuously monitored to reveal the influence of the impounding process of the TGR on the water eutrophication in the Xiangxi Bay(XXB).The maximal daily rise of the water level of the TGR was about 2.38 m.The water exchange between the mainstream(the Changjiang River) and the XXB of the TGR was enhanced by density current, and its main characteristics were a density-stratified flow in different directions. The water exchange reduced the differences of the water quality parameters(for example, temperature, turbidity, nutrient level,pH,etc.) between the mainstream and the XXB during the impounding process.Meanwhile, the water stability index in the mainstream remained small but it was lowered in the XXB.The main causes included the dilution by water of lower concentration of the chlorophyll a(Chl.a) entering from the mainstream, the decline of the water stability, and the increase of suspended silt, which induced the Chl.a to decrease in the XXB during the impounding process. The grade of the water eutrophication changed from middle eutrophic level to mesotrophic state in the process. However,as available nutrients were imported into the XXB from the mainstream during the impounding process the risk of water eutrophication increases in the XXB in the future.YANG ZhengJian1,LIU DeFu1,JI DaoBin1,2 & XIAO ShangBin1,3 1 College of Civil & Hydroelectric Engineering,China Three Gorges University,Yichang 443002,China 2 School of Water Resources & Hydropower Engineering,Wuhan University,Wuhan 430072,China 3 Institute of Earth Environment,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Xi’an 710075,China 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,4:58
Effect of Nimesulide on proliferation and apoptosis of human hepatoma SMMC-7721 cells显示文摘AIM: Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) has been suggested to beassociated with carcinogenesis. We sought to investigatethe effect of the selective COX-2 inhibitor, Nimesulide onproliferation and apoptosis of SMMC-7721 human hepatomacells.METHODS: This study was carried out on the culture ofhepatic carcinoma SMMC-7721 cell line. Variousconcentrations of Nimesulide (0、200 μmol/L、300 μmol/L、400μmol/L) were added and incubated. Cell proliferation wasdetected with MTT colorimetric assay, cell apoptosis byelectron microscopy, flow cytometry and TUNEL.RESULTS: Nimesulide could significantly inhibit SMMC-7721cells proliferation dose-dependent and in a dependentmanner compared with that of the control group. Theduration lowest inhibition rate produced by Nimesulide inSMMC-7721 cells was 19.06 %, the highest inhibition ratewas 58.49 %. After incubation with Nimesulide for 72 h, themost highest apoptosis rate and apoptosis index of SMMC-7721 cells comparing with those of the control were 21. 20 %+1.62% vs2.24% +0.26% and21.23+ 1.78 vs2.01+0.23(p<0.05).CONCLUSION: The selective COX-2 inhibitor, Nimesulide caninhibit the proliferation of SMMC-7721 cells and increaseapoptssis rate and apoptosis index of SMMC-7721 cells. Theapoptoois rate and the apoptosis index are dose-dependent.Under electron microscope SMMC-7721 cells incubated with 300μmol and 400 μmol Nimesulide show apoptotic characteristics. With the clarification of the mechanism of selective COX-2inhibitors, These COX-2 selective inhibitors can become thechoice of prevention and treatment of cancers.Geng Tian Jie-Ping Yu He-Sheng Luo Bao-Ping Yu Hui Yue Jian-Ying Li Oiao Mei,Gastroenterology department,Renmin hospital of Wuhan university,Wuhan 430060,Hubei Province,China 2002World Journal of Gastroenterology2002,8,3:51
Research on the dynamics of the South China Sea opening:Evidence from analogue modeling显示文摘Independent of Indochina extrusion, the South China Sea experienced a process from passive continental rifting to marginal sea drifting. According to the fault patterns in the Beibu Gulf basin and the Pearl River Mouth basin, the continental rifting and early spreading stage from 32 to 26 Ma were controlled by extensional stress field, which shifted clockwise from southeastward to south southeastward. From 24 Ma on, the sea spread in NW-SE direction and ceased spreading at around 15.5 Ma. Integrated geological information with the assumption that the South China Sea developed along a pre-Cenozoic weakness zone, we did analogue experiments on the South China Sea evolu- tion. Experiments revealed that the pre-existing weakness zone goes roughly along the uplift zone between the present Zhu-1 and Zhu-2 depression. The pre-existing weakness zone is composed of three segments trending NNE, roughly EW and NEE, respectively. The early opening of the South China Sea is accompanied with roughly 15° clockwise rotation, while the SE sub-sea basin opened with SE extension. Tinjar fault was the western boundary of the Nansha block (Dangerous Ground), while Lupar fault was the eastern boundary of the Indochina, NW-trending rift belt known as Zengmu basin developed between above two faults due to block divergent of Indochina from Nansha. In the experiment, transtensional flower structures along NW-trending faults are seen, and slight inversion occurs along some NE-dipping faults. The existence of rigid massifs changed the orientations of some faults and rift belt, and also led to deformation concentrate around the massifs. The rifting and drifting of the South China Sea might be caused by slab pull from the proto South China Sea subducting toward Borneo and/or mantle flow caused by India-Asia collision.SUN Zhen1,2, ZHOU Di1, ZHONG Zhihong3, XIA Bin2, QIU Xuelin1, ZENG Zuoxun4 & JIANG Jianqun5 1. 9Entransy dissipation minimization for liquid-solid phase change processes显示文摘The liquid-solid phase change process of a simple one-dimensional slab is studied in this paper.By taking entransy dissipation minimization as optimization objective, the optimal external reservoir temperature profiles are derived by using optimal control theory under the condition of a fixed freezing or melting time. The entransy dissipation corresponding to the optimal heat exchange strategies of minimum entransy dissipation is 8/9 of that corresponding to constant reservoir temperature operations, which is independent of all system parameters. The obtained results for entransy dissipation minimization are also compared with those obtained for the optimal heat exchange strategies of minimum entropy generation and constant reservoir temperature operations by numerical examples. The obtained results can provide some theoretical guidelines for the choice of optimal cooling or heating strategy in practical liquid-solid phase change processes.XIA ShaoJun,CHEN LinGen & SUN FengRui Postgraduate School,Naval University of Engineering,Wuhan 430033,China 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,4:41

“Volume-Point” heat conduction constructal optimization with entransy dissipation minimization objective based on rectangular element显示文摘By taking equivalent thermal resistance, which reflects the average heat conduc- tion effect and is defined based on entransy dissipation, as optimization objective, the 'volume to point' constructal problem of how to discharge the heat generated in a fixed volume to a heat sink on the border through relatively high conductive link is re-analyzed and re-optimized in this paper. The constructal shape of the control volume with the best average heat conduction effect is deduced. For the elemental area and the first order construct assembly, when the thermal current density in the high conductive link is linear with the length, the optimized shapes of assemble based on the minimization of entransy dissipation are the same as those based on minimization of maximum temperature difference, and the mean tem- perature difference is 2/3 of the maximum temperature difference. For the second and higher order construct assemblies, the thermal current densities in the high conductive link are not linear with the length, and the optimized shapes of assem- ble based on the minimization of entransy dissipation are different from those based on minimization of maximum temperature difference. For the same parame- ters, the constructs based on minimization of entransy dissipation and the con- structs based on minimization of maximum temperature difference are compared, and the results show that the constructs based on entransy dissipation can de- crease the mean temperature difference better than the constructs based on mini- mization of maximum temperature difference. But with the increase of the number of the order, the mean temperature difference does not always decrease, and there exist some fluctuations. Because the idea of entransy describes the heat transfer ability more suitably, all of the heat conduction constructal problems may be re-optimized based on it.WEI ShuHuan, CHEN LinGen & SUN FengRui Postgraduate School, Naval University of Engineering, Wuhan 430033, China 2008Science China(Technological Sciences)2008,51,8:47
The deformation pattern and fault rate in the Tianshan Mountains inferred from GPS observations显示文摘Based on GPS measurements conducted from 1992 to 2006, we present the current crustal movement velocity field for approximately 400 sites in the Tianshan Mountains and their adjacent areas, and estimate slip rates on the major faults using a 2-D elastic dislocation model. Our studies show slip rates within the range of 1―4 mm/a on the NW-SE trending strike-slip faults (such as Talas-Fergana fault) in the Tianshan Mountains. We also found the slip rates on the approximately WE-SN trending gently-dipping detachment fault vary from 10―13 mm/a for the southwest Tianshan Mountains to 2―5 mm/a for the eastern Tianshan Mountains, and to 6―12 mm/a for the Kyrgrz Tianshan. The GPS velocity field reveals that the total convergence is not uniformly distributed across the Tianshan Mountains, with 80%―90% of the N-S shortening absorbed along the southern and northern edges, and relatively little deformation accommodated within the interior. This first-order feature of strain pattern is explained best by underthrusting of adjacent blocks beneath the Tianshan Mountains along a basal detachment fault. We found the occurrence of historical M7―8 earthquakes somewhere in the locked ramp that connects the creeping and locking segments of the detachment, thereby resulting in elastic strain concentration and accumulation around it. The elastic strain confined in the upper crustal layer above the detachment ultimately releases through infrequent great earthquakes in the Tianshan Mountains, resulting in considerable folding and faulting at their margins. The Tianshan Mountains propagated outward and rose progressively as a wedge-shaped block.YANG ShaoMin1,2, LI Jie1,3 & WANG Qi2,1 1 Research Center of Space Science and Technology, China University of Geosciences, Wuhan 430074, China 2 Institute of Seismology, China Earthquake Administration, Wuhan 430071, China 3 Earthquake Administration of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Urumqi 830011, China 2008Science China Earth Sciences2008,51,8:43
Petrogenesis and dating of the Kangding complex,Sichuan Province显示文摘An analysis of major and trace element geochemistry and SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating of mafic, intermediate, and felsic rocks from the Mianning metamorphic complex of Si- chuan Province was conducted. One of our conclusions is that a majority of the zircons crystal- lized between 721 and 773 Ma in a magmatic regime. The complexes contain early to late Pa- leo-proterozoic relict zircons from ancient continental crust. The oldest age, 2468 Ma, may rep- resent the basement of the Yangtze block. Overgrowth zircon rims and palingenetic zircons have been observed and dated, and are believed to have formed after crystallization, during Paleozoic and Mesozoic metamorphic-anatexis. We also conclude that depletion of Nb, Ta, HREE, in a spider-diagram normalized to primitive mantle and calc-alkaline association, implies that they formed in island-arc or under-plating settings.CHEN Yuelong 1 , LUO Zhaohua 1 , ZHAO Junxiang, LI Zhihong, ZHANG Hongfei & SONG Biao 3 1. 15Mitigation of lake eutrophication:Loosen nitrogen control and focus on phosphorus abatement显示文摘Traditionally, nitrogen control is generally considered an important component of reducing lake eutrophication and cyanobacteria blooms. However, this viewpoint is refuted recently by researchers in China and North America. In the present paper, the traditional viewpoint of nitrogen control is pointed out to lack a scientific basis:the N/P hypothesis is just a subjective assumption;bottle bioassay experiments fail to simulate the natural process of nitrogen fixation. Our multi-year comparative research in more than 40 Yangtze lakes indicates that phosphorus is the key factor determining phytoplankton growth regardless of nitrogen concentrations and that total phytoplankton biomass is determined by total phosphorus and not by total nitrogen concentrations. These results imply that,in the field, nitrogen control will not decrease phytoplankton biomass. This finding is supported by a long-term whole-lake experiment from North America. These outcomes can be generalized in terms that a reduction in nitrogen loading may not decrease the biomass of total phy-toplankton as it can stimulate blooms of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria. To mitigate eutrophication,it is not nitrogen but phosphorus that should be reduced, unless nitrogen concentrations are too high to induce direct toxic impacts on human beings or other organisms. Finally, details are provided on how to reduce controls on nitrogen and how to mitigate eutrophication.Haijun Wang,Hongzhu Wang Institute of Hydrobiology,The Chinese Academy of Sciences,Wuhan 430072,China 2009Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,10:38

Biostratigraphic correlations among the Lower Triassic sections on the basis of standard conodont zones indicate that three negative shifts occurred in the Griesbachian, the Smithian and the late Spathian stages respectively, and one distinctly positive shift occurred in the early Spathian stage. Trend of carbon isotope evolution of the Lower Triassic reflects some significant changes in the global carbon cycle. Moreover, δ 13C background values are intensively controlled by palaeogeographic environment. In general, δ 13C values from deep-water slope carbonates are lighter than those from carbonate platform and heavier than those from deep-water basin carbonates. The positive carbon isotope excursion may be induced by a significant amount of organic carbon burial in marine sediments and increase in primary productivity. The large negative carbon isotope excursions during the Early Triassic in Lower Yangtze Region are interpreted to relate to volcano eruptions based on tuffaceous claystone interlayers observed near the Permian-Triassic boundary, the Induan- Olenekian boundary and the Lower Triassic-Middle Triassic boundary.ZUO Jingxun1,2, TONG Jinnan3, QIU Haiou4 & ZHAO Laishi3 1.
