The compositions, sources, and size distribution of the dust storm from China in spring of 2000 and its impact on the global environment显示文摘The average mass concentration of the aerosols in Beijing during the dust storm in the spring of 2000 was -6000 μg · m-3, -30 times as high as that in the non-dust storm days. The enrichment factors of the pollution elements As, Sb and Se were higher than those in the non-dust storm days. This indicated that As, Sb and Se resulted from the pollution sources of those areas, through which the dust storm passed during their long-range transport, in addition to the local pollution sources in Beijing. The enrichment factors of the Pb, Zn, Cd and Cu were much less than those in the non-dust storm days, suggesting that the local pollution sources in Beijing area contributed to them mostly. The enrichment factors of elements Al, Fe, Sc, Mn, Na, Ni, Cr, V and Co were close to 1, showing that these elements originated from crust. The concentration of S in the dust storm was -10 μg · m-3,4 times as high as that in non-dust storm. S in the aerosols resulted from the adsorption of gaseous SO2 and the consequent | Guoshun Zhuang Jinghua Guo Hui Yuan Chengyi Zhao | 2001 | Chinese Science Bulletin2001,46,11: | 44
Loess in the Tian Shan and its implications for the development of the Gurbantunggut Desert and drying of northern Xinjiang显示文摘Eolian loess is widely distributed on the various geomorphic surfaces between 700-2400 m a.s.l. on the northern slope of the Tian Shan. It is formed in a synchronous manner with dust transported from the Gurbantunggut Desert in the Junggar Basin. The thickest section of loess was found in the Shawan and Shihezi regions. Paleomagnetic and climatic proxy analyses of over 71 m of a loess-paleosol sequence on the highest terrace of the Qingshui He (River) in the Shawan show that the paleomagnetic Bruhues/Matuy-ama (B/M) boundary lies at the bottom of paleosol S8, at a depth of 69.5 m, and the bottom of the sequence was estimated to be -0.8 Ma. This implies that the extremely dry climatic conditions in the Junggar Basin and the initial Gurbantunggut Desert were present at least by 0.8 Ma. High-resolution grain size series demonstrate that this area and desert expansion experienced two dramatic periods of desert expansions that occurred at -0.65 Ma and 0.5 Ma, respectively; and the subsequent continuous | FANG Xiaomin SHI Zhentao YANG Shengli YAN Maodu LI Jijun JIANG Ping’an | 2002 | Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,16: | 33
New progress of lake sediments and environmental changes research in China显示文摘Environmental change recorded by lake sediments is one of the important branches of the past global changes study. The new progress of lake sediments and environmental changes in China since the late 1980s has been comprehensively discussed. The highlights emphasized are Asian paleomonsoon migration reflected by lake level fluctuation, uplift of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau recorded by lacustrine sediments, saltlake sediments and | WANG Sumin and ZHANG ZhenkeLaboratory of Lake Sediment and Environment, Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences , Nanjing 210008, China Department of Geography and Oceanology, Nanjing University , Nanjing 210093 , China | 1999 | Chinese Science Bulletin1999,44,19: | 22
The uplifting and environmental change of Qinghai-Xizang (Tibetan) Plateau in the past 0.9 Ma inferred from core RM of Zoige Basin显示文摘According to the synthetic multi-disciplinary study on the lake sediments from core RM of Zoige Basin, i.e. the deepest wholly-collected core in Tibetan Plateau, the palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment for the basin in the past 0.9 Ma have been reconstructed. The analytical results suggest that there distinctively exist 3 accelerated uplifting periods for the east Plateau in the past 0.9 Ma, i.e. 800, 360 and 160 kaB.P., with the study on the sedimentary characteristics, the texture of sedimentary cycles and variations of depositional rates, in conjunction with the environment features of cold/warm to dry/wet combination. The paper also probes into the environmental effect under the 3 accelerated tectonic-upliftings on the background of global change. | 薛滨 王苏民 夏威岚 吴敬禄 王云飞 钱君龙 胡守云 吴艳宏 张平中 | 1998 | Science China Earth Sciences1998,41,2: | 12
Global change and climate-vegetation classification显示文摘Three phrases of the quantitative study of climate-vegetation classification and their characteristics are presented based on the review of advance in climate-vegetation interaction, a key issue of 'global change and terrestrial ecosystems (GCTE)' which is the core project of International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP): (i) characterized by the correlation between natural vegetation types and climate; (? characterized by climatic indices which have obviously been restricted to plant ecophysiology; (iii) characterized by coupling both structure and function of vegetation. Thus, the prospective of climate-vegetation classification for global change study in China was proposed, especially the study coupling climate-vegetation classification models with atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs) was emphasized. | Guangsheng Zhou Yuhui Wang | 2000 | Chinese Science Bulletin2000,45,7: | 12
Convective heat transfer enhancement of laminar flow of latent functionally thermal fluid in a circular tube with constant heat flux: internal heat source model and its application显示文摘This paper analyzes the convective heat transfer enhancement mechanism of latent heat functionally thermal fluid. By using the proposed internal heat source model, the influence of each factor affecting the heat transfer enhancement of laminar flow in a circular tube with constant heat flux is analyzed. The main influencing factors and the mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement are clarified, and the influences of the main factors on the heat transfer enhancement are quantitatively analyzed. A modified Nusselt number for internal flow is introduced to describe more effectively the degree of heat transfer enhancement for latent functionally thermal fluid. | 张寅平 胡先旭 郝磬 王馨 | 2003 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2003,46,2: | 10
Recent change of the ice core accumulation rates on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau显示文摘Three ice cores recovered from the Himalayas (i.e. the East Rongbuk Glacier and the Far East Rongbuk Glacier at Mt. Qomolangma (Everest), and the Dasuopu Glacier at Xixiabangma) show a sharp decline in the accumulation rates since the 1950s, which is consistent with the precipitation fluctuation over India and the low northern latitude zone (5°-35癗). Correspondingly, an increasing trend is observed for the ice core accumulations from the central and northern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (i.e. the Xiao Dongkemadi Glacier in the central Tanggula Mountains, the Guliya Ice Cap in the western Kunlun Mountains, and the Dunde Ice Cap in the Qilian Mountains) since the 1950s, which is consistent with the precipitation fluctuation over the middle-high northern latitude zone (35°-70°N). However, the variation magnitude of the high-elevation ice core accumulations is more significant than that of precipitation at the low-eleva- tion places, suggesting its extra sensitivity of high-elevation areas to climatic change. | Shugui Hou Dahe Qin Tandong Yao Dongqi Zhang Tuo Chen | 2002 | Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,20: | 10

Pleistocene magnetic susceptibility and paleomagnetism of the Tibetan loess and its implications on large climatic change events显示文摘Ganzi loess represents the oldest Tibetan loess, its formation is the key to determining the readjustment of Tibetan atmospheric circulation and the relationship between Tibetan uplift and global climatic change. Detailed magnetostratigraphic study shows that the Ganzi loess was formed at about 1.13 MaBP. It also reveals that there are two notable climatic events occurring in 0.95-0.92 Ma and 0.65-0.5 Ma respectively. They both demonstrate that the Tibetan atmospheric circulation was readjusted and the Tibetan Plateau entered the cryosphere at 21.13 Ma, and the Tibetan glaciation might reach its maximum at ~ 0.65-0.5 Ma. | 颜茂都 方小敏 陈诗越 杨胜利 吕连清 李吉均 安芷生 | 2001 | Science China Earth Sciences2001,44,S1: | 8

Salinization Increase due to Climate Change Will Have Substantial Negative Effects on Inland Waters: A Call for Multifaceted Research at the Local and Global Scale显示文摘Globally, temperature and precipitation patterns are predicted to change markedly as a result of climate change.Particularly, the regions with a cold or hot semi-arid climate and the Mediterranean climate zone are expected to be strongly affected.1,2 A 25%–30%decrease in precipitation and increased evaporation are expected by the end of the 21st century in the Mediterranean region,to be accompanied by an even stronger reduction in runoff of up to 30%–40%,1,2 and this will lead to increasing salinization of lakes in these areas. | Erik Jeppesen Meryem Beklioglu Korhan Ozkan Zuhal Akyurek | 2020 | The Innovation2020,1,2: | 6

Events of abrupt change of Indian monsoon recorded in Dasuopu ice core from Himalayas显示文摘Three ice cores distributed across Dasuopu glacier in Himalayas were recovered. A 400-year net annual accumulation record reconstructed from one of the cores reflects the major precipitation trend in the central Himalayas. This record is related closely to the Indian monsoon precipitation. Wavelet and moving T-test were applied to the 400-year-long Dasuopu accumulation record, and significant staggered variability and abrupt change of the record on interannual to centennial time scales are identified. Finally the possible reason for abrupt change of the accumulation record is discussed. | Keqin Duan Ninglian Wang Jianchen Pu | 2002 | Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,8: | 5
Transformation functions of soil color and climate显示文摘Measurements on modern soil color suggest well functional relationships between the soil formation process and the present climatic factors. The redness and yellowness of soil are chiefly caused by the contents of hematite and fullonite, and their correlations to climate are the best in humid regions in tropic and warm temperate regions. The lightness of soil mainly correlates to the organic accumulation, humification and carbonatization processes, and its correlation to climate can only be found in the humid-arid extratropical belt. The humidity and surface roughness of soil have so strong influence on soil color that there are great errors on the measurement of colorness in the field. The study on soil colors of typical loess sections shows that soil color can record the characteristics of Asia monsoon and the global climatic fluctuations well at millennial and ten-thousand-year scales. | 16 | Forest carbon budgets in Southeast Asia following harvesting and land cover change显示文摘Terrestrial ecosystems play an important role in the global carbon (C)cycle. Tropical forests in Southeast Asia are constantly changing as a result of harvesting and conversion to other land cover. As a result of these changes, research on C budgets of forest ecosystems has intensified in the region over thelast few years. This paper reviews and synthesizes the available information. Natural forests in SE Asia typically contain a high C density (up to 500 Mg/ha). Logging activities are responsible for at least 50% decline in forest C density.Complete deforestation (conversion from forest to grassland or annual crops) results in C density of less than 40 Mg/ha. Conversion to tree plantations and other woody perennial crops also reduces C density to less than 50% of the originalC forest stocks. While much information has been generated recently, there are still large gaps of information on C budgets of tropical forests and its conversion to other land uses in SE Asia. There is therefore a need to intensify research in this area. | Rodel D. Lasco | 2002 | Science China(Life Sciences)2002,45,z1: | 4
Linkage of liquid conductivity of glacier ice with its alkalinity over the north Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau——Implication to the past dust recovery显示文摘Liquid conductivity (EC) measurement was conducted for the samples collected from several snow pits and ice cores over the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau, with their time range covering seasonal, decadal and centennial scales. Unlike the previous attention mostly focused on the acidity (H+) responding to the solid conductance (ECM) of glacial ice, we introduce the alkalinity (OH?) of snow and ice to show how it responds to EC. Strong linear relationship was established between EC and OH? for these snow pits and ice cores. Positive correlation is also established between EC and major cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+). Since the cations are known as the proxies for the intensity of mineral dust influx onto glaciers of the northern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, we believe that EC could be used as an indicator for the history of dust input in deep ice core study. In fact, records in Guliya ice core since the Little Ice Age (LIA) indicate that dust load in glacier may depend on the combination of temperature and humidity. 'Cold-dry' combination favors the dust arising, and results in higher EC and OH- values, while 'warm-wet' combination prevents dust form and EC and OH- values are lower. In the past century, with the atmospheric warming and precipitation increasing over the northern plateau, which means an atmospheric condition of dust decreasing, both EC and OH- displayed rapid decline. | 效存德 姚檀栋 秦大河 Katsumoto Seko 蒲健辰 盛文坤 | 2002 | Science China Earth Sciences2002,45,4: | 4
Centennial changes of drought/flood spatial pattern in eastern China for the last 2000 years显示文摘The statistical characteristics of the bicentennial changes of the drought/flood spatial pattern over the eastern part of China have been analyzed from 101 AD to 1900 AD, and their relationship with the cold/warm climatic variation in the same time span are discussed as well. The main conclusions are as follows. (I) During the period of the 2nd ~ 11th centuries, the spatial pattern of drought/flood in the eastern part of China was characterized by thc east-west differentiation. Namely, it was dry in the west (northwest) while it was wet in the east (southeast). (ii) From the 12th to 15th centuries, the east-west differentiation coexisted with the south-north differentiation, and the former was still the dominant pattern. (iii) However, the dominant spatial pattern changed to the south- north differentiation during the 16th ~ 19th centuries, namely, it was dry in the north and wet in the south. As for the dry-wet demarcation line. It shifted westward in warn times, and once reached Datong-Taiyuan-Xi' an-Hanzhong; whereas in cold times, it retreated southeastward and reached Ji' nan-Heze-Nanyang. Furthermore, the transmeridian (W-E) dry-wet demarcation line was replaced by the meridian (N-S) dry-wet demarcation line during the two coldest periods. Moreover, in cold times, it was dry in northern China, and it was wet in the middle and lower reaches of Changjiang River and regions south of Changjiang River; in warm times, however, it was wet in northern China, and was dry in eastern China, especially in the lower reaches of Changjiang River and regions south of Changjiang River. | 郑景云 张丕远 葛全胜 满志敏 | 2001 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2001,11,4: | 4
Extreme weather and climate events in China under changing climate显示文摘In the summer of 2003,a heat wave swept Europe and caused more than 70000 additional fatalities[J.-M.Robine et al.,C.R.Biologies 331(2008)].Global warming and climate change is no longer a prophecy to be fulfilled,as strong heat waves and typhoons,as well as severe rainfalls, are becoming more severe.Extreme weather and climate events in the world, especially over Europe and North America, are widely studied and frequently reported in the media. These events may be related to the ongoing climate change. In this NSR forum, active researchers specialized in this field gather to discuss the climate and weather changes in China. They present the current changes, identify knowledge gaps, discuss the research difficulties, and propose ways forward to better serve the society with climate science. | Weijie Zhao | 2020 | National Science Review2020,7,5: | 4
| 20 | Counting chronology and climate records with about 1000 annual layers of a Holocene stalagmite from the Water Cave in Liaoning Province,China显示文摘One active stalagmite from the Water Cave in Liaoning Province contains growth layers of three sizes. Based on thermal ionization mass spectrometry 230Th dating, we found that middle size layers are annual layers, with each middle layer consisting of one narrow dark layer and a wide bright layer. The small layers within middle layers are sub-annual layers and the large layers are multi-year layers. Based on the layer-counting method, we established a high-resolution time scale for layer thickness.
