| 1 | Characteristics of distribution and transport of petroleum contaminants in fracture-karst water in Zibo Area, Shandong Province, China显示文摘Fracture-karst water is an important water resource for the water supply in North China. Petroleum contamination is one of the most problematic types of the groundwater pollution. The characteristics of distribution and transport of the petroleum contaminants in fracture-karst water are different from those in porous water. The flow velocity of fracture-karst water is much faster than the velocity of porous water on an average. Therefore, contaminant transport in fracture-karst water is an absolute advection-dominated problem. The plume of the petroleum contamination may extend to several kilometers from pollution sources. It was not caused by the oil pool floating on the water table but by the oil components dissolved and scattered in groundwater. The distribution of the petroleum contaminants over space are concentrated in the strong conductive zone on the plane. | 2 | Factors Associated with Peripheral Neuropathy in Type 2 Diabetes: Subclinical versus Confirmed Neuropathy显示文摘This study determined the prevalence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN) and subclinical DPN(s DPN) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) using nerve conduction study(NCS) as a diagnostic tool. We also investigated the factors associated with the development of s DPN and compared factors between the sD PN and confirmed DPN(cDPN). This cross-sectional study involved 240 T2DM patients who were successively admitted to the endocrinology wards of Wuhan Union Hospital over the period of January to December 2014. Data on the medical history, physical and laboratory examinations were collected. DPN was diagnosed using NCS. One-way ANOVA with least significant difference(LSD) analysis or chi-square tests was used to compare parameters among DNP-free, s DPN and c DPN patients. Independent factors associated with s DPN were determined using logistic regression. The results showed that 50.8% of the participants had DPN, and among them, 17.1% had sDPN. sDPN showed significant independent associations with age, height, HbA1c, presence of atherosclerosis and diabetic retinopathy. Patients with DPN differed significantly from those without DPN with respect to age, duration of disease(DOD), HbA1c, presence of atherosclerosis, diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy and hypertension. Patients with cDPN, relative to those with sDPN, had significantly longer DOD and higher prevalence of peripheral artery disease(PAD) and coronary artery disease(CAD). Our study suggests that a significant number of T2DM patients are affected by s DPN, and the development of this condition is associated with advanced age, tall stature, poor glycaemic control, presence of diabetic retinopathy and atherosclerosis. | 7 | Single-allergen Sublingual Immunotherapy versus Multi-allergen Subcutaneous Immunotherapy for Children with Allergic Rhinitis显示文摘It has always been controversial whether a single allergen performs better than multiple allergens in polysensitized patients during the allergen-specific immunotherapy. This study aimed to examine the clinical efficacy of single-allergen sublingual immunotherapy(SLIT) versus multi-allergen subcutaneous immunotherapy(SCIT) and to discover the change of the biomarker IL-4 after 1-year immunotherapy in polysensitized children aged 6–13 years with allergic rhinitis(AR) induced by house dust mites(HDMs). The AR polysensitized children(n=78) were randomly divided into two groups: SLIT group and SCIT group. Patients in the SLIT group sublingually received a single HDM extract and those in the SCIT group were subcutaneously given multiple-allergen extracts(HDM in combination with other clinically relevant allergen extracts). Before and 1 year after the allergen-specific immunotherapy(ASIT), the total nasal symptom scores(TNSS), total medication scores(TMS) and IL-4 levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMCs) were compared respectively between the two groups. The results showed that the TNSS were greatly improved, and the TMS and IL-4 levels were significantly decreased after 1-year ASIT in both groups(SLIT group: P<0.001; SCIT group: P<0.001). There were no significant differences in any outcome measures between the two groups(for TNSS: P>0.05; for TMS: P>0.05; for IL-4 levels: P>0.05). | 8 | Seasonal variations of PM10 -- Trace elements, PAHs and Levoglucosan: Rural sugarcane growing area versus coastal urban area in Southeastern Florida, USA. Part II: Elemental concentrations显示文摘The largest sugarcane-growing area in the United States is in South Florida. An estimated 7 million tons of dry sugarcane leafy biomass is removed from the fields before harvest by burning the leaves off the sugarcane stalks. Preharvest sugarcane leaf foliage burning is a major source of airborne particulate matter (PM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), biogenic trace elements such as K, volatile hydrocarbons and other pollutants. In one harvesting period, approximately 22 million tons of C02, a greenhouse gas, is released, 7 million tons from leaf foliage preharvest burning alone and 15 million tons from burning sugarcane bagasse in the sugar mills for power generation. In this study, PMio was collected from Belle Glade, close to the sugarcane-growing area, and from Delray Beach, an urbanized area along the East Coast of Florida. The PM samples were analyzed for trace elements and close to organic compounds. To elucidate the importance of preharvest sugarcane biomass smoke emissions on air quality, 39 trace elements, 18 PAHs, and levoglucosan were selected to apportion ambient PM constituents. Al, Ca and to a great extend also Mg are the major soil-related trace elements and key markers for fugitive soil dust emissions. Similarly, sea salt aerosol blown from the Atlantic Ocean into Florida added appreciably to PMio trace elements concentration, especially Na and Cl. Approximately half of the sea salt aerosol (PMjo -portion) by mass is removed from the atmosphere during the transport of ocean air from Delray Beach to Belle Glade. Ambient acid displacement reactions caused a substantial portion of the Cl (30%) to be liberated from the sea salt aerosol to the atmosphere during transport as gaseous HC1. The PAH concentrations at Belle Glade were high when the biomass combustion markers levoglucosan and I< also showed the highest concentrations. This indicates that during the sugarcane harvest season, when leaf foliage is burned off just before harvest, most of the ambient PAHs associated with PMio are indeed related to preharvest burning, harvesting machinery emissions, bagasse burning in sugarcane mills, and other related activities that consume biomass and/or fossil fuels for sugarcane harvesting and processing. | Orhan Sevim oglu Wolfgang F.
