| 1 | Effect of L-NAME on nitric oxide and gastrointestinal motility alterations in cirrhotic rats显示文摘AIM: To invsstigare the effect of L-NAME on nitric oxide andgastriubtestubal motility alterations in cirrhotic ratsMETHODS: Rats with cirrhosis induced by carbontetrachloride were randomly divided into two groups, one( n= 13) receiving 0. 5 mg@ kg-1 per clay of NG-nitro-L-argininemethyl ester (L-NAME), a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor,for 10 days, whereas the other group ( n = 13) and control( n = 10) rats were administrated the same volume of 9 g@ L-1saline.Half gastric emptying time and 2 h residual rate weremeasured by SPECT, using 99m Tc-DTPA-labeled bariumsuifate as test meal. Gastrointestinal transition time wasrecorded simultaneously. Serum concentration of nitrcoxide (NO) was determined by the kinetic cadmiunreduction and colorimetric methods. ImmunohistochemicalSABC method was used to observe the expression anddistribution of three types of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)isoforms in the mt gastrointestinal tract. Western blot wasused to detect expression of gastrointestinal NOS isoforms.RESULTS: Half gastric emptying time and trans-gastrointestinal time were significantly prolonged( 124.0 ± 26.4min; 33.7± 8.9min;72.1 ± 15.3 min; P<0.01), (12.4±0.5h; 9.5±0.3 h; 8.2±0.8 h; P<0.01), 2h residual rate wasraised in cirrhotic rots than in controls and cirrhotic ratstreated with L-NAME(54.9± 7.6 % ,13.7 ± 3.2 %, 34.9± 10.3%, P< 0.01). Serum concentration of NO was significantlyincreased in cirrhotic rots than in the other groups (8.20 ± 2.48)μmol@L-1, (5.94± 1.07) μmol@L-1 ,and control (5.66± 1.60) tμmol@L-1, P< 0.01. NOS staining intensities which weremainly located in the gastrointestinal tissues were markedlylower in cirrhotic rats than in the controls and cirrhotic ratsafter treated with L- NAME.CONCLUSION: Gastrointestinal motility was remarkablyinhibited in cirrhotic rats, which could he alleviated by L-NAME. | 2 | Potential role of retina as a biomarker for progression of Parkinson's disease显示文摘Optical coherence tomography (OCT) noninvasively quantifies the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). OCT has been studied in several neuro-ophthalmic conditions, including Parkinson's disease (PD). Recent studies suggest that the quantitative analysis of RNFL can be precisely and noninvasively done by OCT scans and the results suggest that the thickness of RNFL is significantly decreased in patients with PD compared with age-matched controls and the foveal retinal thickness correlates with disease severity in PD. In this article, the application of OCT imaging of the retina in PD was reviewed. Literature survey of PubMed was carried out using the search terms of 'Optical Coherence Tomography' combined with 'Parkinson's Disease' and 'retinal nerve fiber layer' (without restriction to the year of publication). Some related articles were also included. The search was completed in Jul. 2011 and revised and updated as necessary. | 3 | Irinotecan-involved regimens for advanced gastric cancer:A pooled-analysis of clinical trials显示文摘AIM:To assess the efficiency and toxicities of irinotecan (CPT-11)-involved regimens in patients with advanced gastric cancer.METHODS:Randomized phases Ⅱ and Ⅲ clinical trials on chemotherapy for advanced gastric cancer were searched from MEDLINE,EMbase,Cochrane Controlled Trials Register,and EBSCO.Relevant abstracts were manually searched.A total of 657 patients were analyzed for their overall response rate (ORR),time to treatment failure (TTF),overall survival (OS) rate,and toxicities.Overall survival rate,reported as hazard ratio (HR) with 95% CI,was used as the primary outcome measure.RESULTS:Four randomized controlled trials on chemotherapy for advanced gastric cancer were detected.The CPT-11-containing combination chemotherapy was not significantly advantageous over the non CPT-11containing combination chemotherapy for OS rate (HR =1.12,95% CI:0.92-1.36,P=0.266) and ORR [risk ratio (RR)=1.23,95% CI:0.71-2.14,P=0.458].However,the CPT-11-containing combination chemotherapy was significantly advantageous over the non CPT-11-containing combination chemotherapy for TTF (HR=1.35,95% CI:1.12-1.64,P=0.002).Grade 3/4 haematological toxicity (thrombocytopenia:RR=0.20,95% CI:0.09-0.48;P < 0.001) and gastrointestinal toxicity (diarrhea:RR=4.09,95% CI:2.42-6.93,P < 0.001) were lower in patients with advanced gastric cancer after CPT11-containing combination chemotherapy than after non CPT-11-containing combination chemotherapy.CONCLUSION:CPT-11-containing combination chemotherapy is advantageous over non CPT-11-containing combination chemotherapy for TTF with no significant toxicity.CPT-11-containing combination chemotherapy can be used in treatment of advanced gastric cancer. | Dan-Ling Wang,Dong-Ying Gu,Hua-Ying Huang,Zhi Xu,Jin-Fei Chen,Department of Oncology,Affiliated Nanjing First Hospital,Nanjing Medical University,68 Changle Road and Medical School of Southeast University,87 Dingjiaqiao,Nanjing 210000,China | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,46: | 2 |

| 13 | Forms of Iron in the Phosphorites of Abu-Tartur Area,Egypt显示文摘The Campanian\|Maastrichtian phosphatic deposits in Egypt, called the Duwi Formation, comprise a part of the extensive Middle East to North African phosphogenic province of Late Cretaceous to Paleogene age. The province holds the greatest accumulation of phosphorites in the geological history, possibly in excess of 70 billion metric tons. The phosphate resources in Egypt alone exceed 3 billion metric tons. Two\|third of these three billions occur only in the Abu\|Tartur area.\; Among the phosphorite deposits in Egypt, the phosphorites of the Abu\|Tartur area are characterized by high contents of iron ranging from 3% to 7% with an average of 5%. The detailed mineralogical and geochemical studies on the Abu\|Tartur phosphorites revealed that iron is found in the form of pyrite, ankerite, clay minerals, microinclusions, and iron oxide. Pyrite, which is the major fraction, occurs as filling cement and partial to complete replacement of phosphatic grains and confined to the fresh phosphorites while iron oxide occurs as cryptocrystalline aggregates of red to brown particles and is confined to the weathered outcrops. Exclusive relations between pyrite in the fresh phosphorite samples inside the Abu\|Tartur mine and iron oxide in the equivalent horizon of the weathered exposure indicated that iron oxide was formed by the oxidation of pyrite as a result of weathering. | 14 | First Neutral Atomic Hydrogen Images of Quasar Host Galaxies显示文摘Violent galactic encounters or mergers are the leading contenders for triggering luminous quasar activity at low redshifts: such interactions can lead to the concentration of gas in the host galactic nucleus, thus fueling the suspected central superrmassive black hole. Although optical images show a number of violently interacting systems, in many cases the evidence for such interactions is only circumstantial (e.g., asymmetric optical morphologies, projected nearby companion galaxies) or not at all apparent. Here we image quasar host galaxies for the first time in the redshifted 21 cm line emission of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas, which in nearby galaxies has proven to be a particularly sensitive as well as enduring tracer of tidal interactions. The three quasars studied have different optical environments normally seen around low reshift quasars, ranging from a perhaps mildly interacting system to a relatively undisturbed host with a projected neighbouring galaxy to an isolated and apparently serene host galaxy. By contrast with their optical appearences, all three quasar host galaxies exhibit ongoing or remnant tidal HI disruptions tracing galactic encounters or mergers.
