| 1 | Heavy metals in maternal and cord blood in Beijing and their efficiency of placental transfer显示文摘This study aimed to determine the effect of exposure to heavy metals in pregnant women in Beijing, China. We also evaluated the association of these heavy metals with birth weight and length of newborns. We measured the levels of 10 heavy metals,including lead(Pb), titanium(Ti), manganese(Mn), nickel(Ni), cadmium(Cd), chromium(Cr), antimony(Sb), stannum(Sn), vanadium(V), and arsenic(As), in 156 maternal and cord blood pairs. An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method was used for measurement. Pb, As, Ti, Mn, and Sb showed high detection rates(> 50%) in both maternal and cord blood. Fourteen(9%) mothers had blood Pb levels greater than the United States Center for Disease Control allowable threshold limit for children(50 μg/L).In prenatal exposure to these heavy metals, there was no significant association between any heavy metal and birth weight/length. Moreover, we estimated the placental transfer efficiency of each heavy metal, and the median placental transfer efficiency ranged from 49.6%(Ni) to 194%(Mn)(except for Cd and Sn). The level and detection rate of Cd in maternal blood were much higher than that in cord blood, which suggested that Cd had difficulty in passing the placental barrier. | 2 | Sulfoalkyl ether β-cyclodextrin derivatives synthesized by a single step method as pharmaceutical biomaterials显示文摘We report a simple 'one pot' single step method to synthesize sulfoalkyl ether β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) derivatives in aqueous solution, which avoids the limitations associated with commonly used organic synthesis of such derivatives including multi-step reactions, use of expensive, toxic, and often environmentally hazardous organic solvents and/or reagents. Using this method, we obtained sulfopropyl and sulfobutyl ethyl β-CDs. We characterized these two derivatives and evaluated their ability to enhance solubility of fluconazole, a commonly used antifungal drug with poor water solubility. Experimental results indicate that these derivatives are structurally analogous to some of the commercially available β-CD derivatives. More importantly, when they formed supramolecular inclusion complexes with fluconazole, they demonstrated similar, if not better, capacity to enhance fluconazole solubility compared with commercially available β-CD derivatives, suggesting that the simple 'one pot' single step synthesis may provide an effective alternative approach to produce large quantity of β-CD derivatives as pharmaceutical biomaterials for medicinal applications. | SONG AiJing WANG JianHua LIU ChunDong DENG LinHong | 2009 | Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,18: | 4 |

| 4 | Association between serum levels of TSH and free T4 and per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds concentrations in pregnant women显示文摘Many per-and polyfluoralkyl substances(PFASs)may disrupt maternal thyroid hormone homeostasis in pregnancy.Concerns should be raised regarding the PFASs exposure in pregnant women because thyroid hormones are involved in the early development of the fetus.In this study,we measured the concentrations of 13 PFASs,including five novel shortchain PFASs,in serum from 123 pregnant women in Beijing,China.Linear regression models were used to investigate the association between thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH)or free thyroxine(FT4)levels and PFASs concentrations under consideration of the impacts of pregnancy-induced physiological factors.We found that perfluorobutanoic acid(PFBA)(β=0.189,95%CI=-0.039,0.417,p=0.10)and perfluorodecanoic acid(PFDA)(β=-0.554,95%CI=-1.16,0.049,p=0.071)were suggestive of significant association with TSH in thyroid peroxidase antibody(TPOAb)negative women.No association was observed between all PFASs and FT4 levels after controlling for these confounding factors,such as BMI,gestational weight gain and maternal age.These findings suggest that it should pay more attention to the association between thyroid hormone levels and short-chain PFASs concentrations.Future studies could consider a greater sample and the inclusion of other clinical indicators of thyroid function,such as free T3 and total T3. | Aijing Li Jian Hou Jianjie Fu YinanWang Yifei Hu Taifeng Zhuang Menglong Li Maoyong Song Guibin Jiang | 2023 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2023,,2: | 0 |
| 5 | OPTICALLY TRACKING THE MOTION OF MICROBEADS TO STUDY PHYSICAL BEHAVIORS OF THE LIVING CELL IN RESPONSE TO TRANSIENT STRETCH OR COMPRESSION显示文摘Optical magnetic twisting cytometry and traction force microscopy are two advanced cell mechanics research tools that employ optical methods to track the motion of microbeads that are either bound to the surface or embedded in the substrate underneath the cell.The former measures rheological properties of the cell such as cell stiffness,and the latter measures cell traction force dynamics.Here we describe the principles of these two cell mechanics research tools and an example of using them to study physical behaviors of the living cell in response to transient stretch or compression.We demonstrate that,when subjected to a stretchunstretch manipulation,both the stiffness and traction force of adherent cells promptly reduced,and then gradually recover up to the level prior to the stretch.Immunofluorescent staining and Western blotting results indicate that the actin cytoskeleton of the cells underwent a corresponding disruption and reassembly process almost in step with the changes of cell mechanics.Interestingly,when subjected to compression,the cells did not show such particular behaviors.Taken together,we conclude that adherent cells are very sensitive to the transient stretch but not transient compression,and the stretch-induced cell response is due to the dynamics of actin polymerization. | LINHONG DENG XUEMEI JIANG CHENG CHEN AIJING SONG FENG LIN | 2011 | Journal of Innovative Optical Health Sciences2011,4,2: | 0 |
