| 3 | Chemical Defense of Soft Coral Sinularia polydactyla from the Red Sea Against Marine Biofilm-Forming Bacteria显示文摘Soft corals are an important group of organisms that live in reef ecosystems. In this study, the chemical defense of soft coral Sinularia polydactyla against biofilm-forming bacteria was assessed. The soft coral S. polydactyla was collected from the Obhur creek of the Red Sea and the bioactive compounds were extracted under different conditions using methanol and hexane as solvents. Results revealed that the bioactive compounds produced by the soft coral S. polydactyla were active against the growth, hydrophobicity and extracellular polymeric substances production of the biofilm-forming bacteria. However, the damage or injury in soft coral tissue caused a decrease in the activity against biofilm-forming bacteria. GC-MS analysis revealed that sesquiterpenes were abundant in normal coral sample extract while cembranoids were abundant in damaged coral sample extracts. In general, the results indicated that the soft corals either under stress or with damage may not have a strong chemical defense against the colonizing marine organisms and competitors. | ESKandER Rehab AL-SOFYANI Abdulmohsin A. | 4 | Serum E3 SUMO-protein ligase NSE2 level and peroxynitrite related to oxidative stress in nephrolithiasis patients显示文摘Objective: To prove probable relations between serum E3 SUMO-protein ligase NSE2(NSMCE2) concentration, peroxynitrite related to oxidative stress in nephrolithiasis patients.Methods: A total of 60 patients with nephrolithiasis and 50 healthy volunteers were involved in this study. Colorimetric method was used to detect blood urea, creatinine, uric acid, protein, albumin, total antioxidant status, total oxidant status, peroxynitrite, nitric oxide and oxidative stress index. | 5 | A New Hybrid Feature Selection Method Using T-test and Fitness Function显示文摘Feature selection(FS)(or feature dimensional reduction,or feature optimization)is an essential process in pattern recognition and machine learning because of its enhanced classification speed and accuracy and reduced system complexity.FS reduces the number of features extracted in the feature extraction phase by reducing highly correlated features,retaining features with high information gain,and removing features with no weights in classification.In this work,an FS filter-type statistical method is designed and implemented,utilizing a t-test to decrease the convergence between feature subsets by calculating the quality of performance value(QoPV).The approach utilizes the well-designed fitness function to calculate the strength of recognition value(SoRV).The two values are used to rank all features according to the final weight(FW)calculated for each feature subset using a function that prioritizes feature subsets with high SoRV values.An FW is assigned to each feature subset,and those with FWs less than a predefined threshold are removed from the feature subset domain.Experiments are implemented on three datasets:Ryerson Audio-Visual Database of Emotional Speech and Song,Berlin,and Surrey Audio-Visual Expressed Emotion.The performance of the F-test and F-score FS methods are compared to those of the proposed method.Tests are also conducted on a system before and after deploying the FS methods.Results demonstrate the comparative efficiency of the proposed method.The complexity of the system is calculated based on the time overhead required before and after FS.Results show that the proposed method can reduce system complexity. | Husam Ali Abdulmohsin Hala Bahjat Abdul Wahab Abdul Mohssen Jaber Abdul Hossen | 2021 | Computers, Materials & Continua2021,,9: | 0 |
| 6 | Zooneuston and zooplankton abundance and diversity in relation to spatial and nycthemeral variations in the Gulf of Aqaba and northern Red Sea显示文摘Zooplankton and zooneuston observations were made at seven stations(four from the Gulf of Aqaba and three from the northern Red Sea), during September and October 2016. The main objective of this study was to assess the variability of nycthemeral fauna in relation to the sampling methods using two different types of nets namely,WP2 net and Neuston net along the two study sites, i.e., the Gulf of Aqaba and the northern Red Sea. Zooplankton was sampled vertically using a standard WP2 net from a depth of 200 m to the surface, whereas zooneuston was made using a standard Neuston net from a depth of 0–10 cm of the water surface. Total zooplankton density was maximum during night time((617.83 ± 201.84) ind./m^3) at the Gulf of Aqaba and total zooneuston was maximum during night at the northern Red Sea((60.94±29.48) ind./m^3), respectively. The most abundant taxa were Copepoda, Gastropoda, Bivalva, Chaetognatha, Tunicata and Ostracoda. The abundance was almost 50% higher at night time at both the Gulf of Aqaba and the northern Red Sea. | 7 | Antifouling Effect of Bioactive Compounds from Selected Marine Organisms in the Obhur Creek,Red Sea显示文摘Three species of sponges and a tunicate were collected from Obhur creek of Jeddah coast for this bioactivity study. In order to assess the antifouling efficacy of selected marine organisms, methanolic extracts of these organisms were tested against different fouling bacterial forms and II-instar stage of the barnacle, Balanus amphitrite. Antibiosis, bioactivity and followed by multivariate analyses were carried out to check the efficacy of antifouling effect of the selected marine organisms. Principal component analysis revealed the exemplary antifouling efficacy of the sponge extracts of Stylissa sp. observed followed by Hyrtios sp. against bacterial forms in the laboratory study. De-trended correspondence analysis confirmed that the contribution of antifouling efficacy of the selected sponge extracts was observed to be more towards Bacillus sp., Vibrio sp. and Alteromonas sp. Moreover, the efficacy of Hyrtios sp. extract(20.430 μg m L^(-1)) followed by Stylissa sp.(30.945 μg m L^(-1)) showed higher against barnacle instar compared with other extracts in the bioactivity assay. Bray-Curtis cluster analysis under paired linkage categorized all the sponge extracts into one major cluster with 75% similarity, and one outlier tunicate. More than 80% similarity observed between Hyrtios sp. and Stylissa sp. | 8 | 向丙泊酚麻醉患者血管内注射含肾上腺素的硬膜外试验剂量观察灌注指数的预测效能显示文摘背景灌注指数是一种无创性的来自干血氧饱和度监测的反映外周循环灌注的指标。本研究评估了灌注指数做为探索成人丙泊酚麻醉过程中血管内注入包含15μg肾上腺素的硬膜外试验剂量药物后变化指标的有效性;同时将它与常规评估标准-心率(HR)(如果升高≥10bpm则为阳性)及收缩压(SBP)(如果升高≥15mmHg则为阳性)进行了可靠性比较。方法40例全静脉麻醉、择期行普外科手术的患者随机静脉注射3ml含5μg/ml肾上腺素浓度为15mg/ml的利多卡因或3ml生理盐水(每组n=20)。监测注射后5分钟的心率、收缩压和灌注指数(PI)。结果注射试验剂量在39±15秒后平均最大灌注指数降低65%±13%。心率和血压的最大增量分别为49±25秒后19±8bpm和102±34秒后17±7mmHg。用灌注指数作为血管内注射的评估指标(如果灌注指数较注射前降低≥10%则为阳性),其敏感性、特异性、阳性预期值和阴性预期值是100%(95%可信区间CI=83%-100%)。相对地,心率和血压指标的敏感性分别为95%(CI=76%-99%)和90%(CI=70%-97%)。结论灌注指数是评价成年丙泊酚静脉麻醉患者血管内注射硬膜外试验剂量药物后常规血流动力学变化的可靠的选用指标。 | Hany A. | 9 | A Rapid Assessment of Scleractinian and Non-Scleractinian Coral Growth Forms Along the Saudi Arabian Coast, Red Sea显示文摘In this study we assessed the current status of coral reefs along the Saudi Arabian coast of the Red Sea. Among the three growth forms of Acroporid corals, the branching forms were found to dominate in the Farassan Islands(44.55%±11.10% cover) followed by tabular forms in the Doga Islands(ranging between 18%±6.47% and 18.30%±9.47% cover). Digitate forms were rarely found along the coast except at Maqna. Among the five growth forms of non-Acroporid corals, we observed maximum cover of branching forms in the Yanbu offshore area(58.89%±15.11% cover) followed by the Jeddah coast(24.76%±14.04% cover). The Millepora spp., a non-Scleractinian coral, was abundant at all the near-shore sites, such as Jeddah(10.70%±8.21%) and Al-Wajh(9.81%±6.69%). The live coral cover(including both Scleractinian and non-Scleractinian corals) of Saudi Red Sea coast was seen to be higher in the north and gradually decrease towards the south. Principal Component analysis showed that the contribution of Acroporid corals was greater in the southern region than in the northern and middle regions, but vice-versa in the case of non-Acroporid corals. Bray-Curtis cluster analysis categorized all the study sites into two major clusters with 60% similarity. | 10 | Diabetic patients and Ramadan fasting:how they live it?显示文摘Objective:To quantify the prevalence of fasting during Ramadan month among diabetic patients and to observe the factors which were deferring between fasting and non-fasting diabetic patients.Methods:A cross-sectional study was carried out at primary health care clinics.The diabetic patients were interviewed with a structured data form by trained research assistants.Patients’age,gender,marital status,weight and height,diabetes type,medication,compliance,follow up,self monitoring and any complication faced during the fasting were collected.Cardiovascular risk factors including smoking habit,hypertension,dyslipidemia and pre-existing cardiovascular diseases were also recorded.Results:Out of 920 diabetic patients,95%were suffering from DM type 2.Overall patients who fasted the whole month of Ramadan were 84%.The proportion of type 1 and type 2 was 71%and 85%respectively.About 63%of DM type 2 patients were treated with oral hypoglycemic agents(OHAs) alone and 2.4%with combination of OHAs and insulin.Only 42%of DM type 1 and 36%of DM type 2 patients has visited their physicians prior to their fast for advice.The significant differing factors which make non-fasting in diabetic patients,were medication(insulin),complications,hyperglycemia,retinopathy, neuropathy,nephropathy and vascular problems.Conclusions:This study has identified the factors in diabetic patients,were being compliant with medication,oral treatments and family support which lead to more likely to fast in Ramadan month.Factors which reduce fasting by these patients were acute and chronic complications,time since diagnosis and insulin treatment.Fasting would be acceptable for patients who are compliant with their diet and medication. | Hamza Mohammad Abdulghani Shaffi Ahmed Shaikh Norah Abdullah Al-Rowais Eiad Abdulmohsin Alfaris | 2008 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2008,1,4: | 0 |
