1Genetic variability for yield and fiber related traits in genetically modified cotton显示文摘Background:Cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.)is grown for fiber and oil purposes in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world.Pakistan is the 4th largest producer of cotton.It has a significant contribution in the GDP of Pakistan.Therefore,the present study was performed to assess the genetic variations and genetic diversity of yield and fiber quality traits in cotton and to analyze the associations present among them.Results:Analysis of variance exhibited significant variation for all studied traits except total number of nodes and the height to node ratio.The phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than the genotypic coefficient of variation for all studied traits.Plant height,monopodial branches,total number of bolls,lint index,seed index,and seed cotton yield displayed high heritabilities in a broad sense with maximum genetic advanee.Correlation analysis revealed that seed cotton yield had a significant positive association with plant height,the nu mber of monopodial branches,the nu mber of sympodia I branches,ginning outturn(GOT),the number of bolls,seed per boll,seed index,uniformity index,the number of sympodial branches,reflectance,and seed index at the genotypic level while a significant positive relationship was observed with plant height,the number of sympodial branches,boll number,and GOT.Plant height,monopodial branches,GOT,boll weight,seeds per boll,and short fiber index exerted direct positive effects on seed cotton yield.The first 6 principal component analysis(PCs)out of the total fourteen PCs displayed eigenvalues(>1)and had maximum share to total variability(82.79%).The attributes that had maximum share to total divergence in eluded plant height,uniformity index,the nu mber of sympodial branches,seed per boll,GOT,seed cotton yield,and short fiber index.Conclusion:The genotype AA-802,IUB-13,FH-159,FH-458,and CIM-595 were genetically diverse for most of the yield and fiber quality traits and could be utilized for the selection of better performing genotypes for further improvement.SAHAR Adeela ZAFAR Muhammad Mubashar RAZZAQ Abdul MANAN Abdul HAROON Muhammad SAJID Sunaina REHMAN Abdul MO Huijuan ASHRAF Muhammad REN Maozhi SHAKEEL Amir YUAN Youlu 2021Journal of Cotton Research2021,4,3:1

5The growth of the Rhodococcus sp. on diesel fuel under the effect of heavy metals and different concentrations of zinc显示文摘Co-contamination of diesel fuel and heavy metals can be challenging for microbial remediation due to the complex composition of the fuel and the inhibitory effect of heavy metals.There is an urgent need to study this interaction to improve the pollutant removal efficiency in the Polar Regions.The growth of an Antarctic bacterium,Rhodococcus sp.was studied by comparing the growth at the logarithmic phase under the effect of selected heavy metals(Pb,Cr,As,Cd,Cu,Zn,Ni,Hg and Co).The selected heavy metals inhibited the growth of the Rhodococcus sp.on diesel fuel in an order from highest to lowest of:Hg>Zn>Cd>Cu>Co>Ni>As>Pb>Cr.Growth on diesel fuel co-contaminated with Hg and Zn were 2.95%and 5.71%,respectively compared to the no-metal control.A further experiment with various Zn concentrations was conducted.The specific growth rate of Rhodococcus sp.co-contaminated with different concentrations of Zn showed a correlation coefficient(r)of 0.916,and was modelled with an exponential decay model.Additional investigation is needed to determine the effect of low concentration of Zn on hydrocarbon degradation.It is important to understand the relationships between microbes,hydrocarbons and heavy metals,especially in the Polar Regions because this interaction might be promising in treating hydrocarbon-polluted sites containing heavy metals.The data and results also provide baseline tools of bioremediation processes at low temperatures and the knowledge of the ecological roles of Rhodococcus sp.in Antarctica.Eg Xiang KAI Wan Lutfi WAN JOHARI Syahir HABIB Nur Adeela YASID Siti Aqlima AHMAD Mohd Yunus SHUKOR 2020Advances in Polar Science2020,31,2:0
6Evaluation of glacial resource potential for sustaining kuhl irrigation system under changing climate in the Himalayan region显示文摘A large numbers of mountain communities in the Himalayan region depend on glacier-fed kuhl system – gravity flow irrigation, for their sustenance. The depletion and retreat of glaciers often result in disruption of melt flows to kuhl system, which ultimately impacts the agriculture as well as livelihood of the local communities. Sustainability of glacial resource was assessed for establishing kuhl irrigation system based on indices of glacier decrease by number(GDN) and glacier depletion by volume(GDV) during the 2001-2013 period. The selected factors are important in terms of understanding point source and reserve potential of glaciers for sustaining glacier-fed kuhl irrigation in this region. The sustainability of glaciers was found good(i.e. a least decrease or rather increase in glacier number and volume) in about 23.6% glaciers(ice reserves about 705.9 km^3) under >10 km^2 area class of glaciers mainly in Gilgit and Shigar river basins of the Karakoram range. In the 5–10 km^2 class of glaciers, sustainability was good in 49 glaciers(ice reserve 26.59 km^3) and under 1–5 km^2 class, in 558 glaciers(ice reserve 60.189 km^3). Overall sustainability of glaciers appears to prevail in the Karakoram basins. The lesser sustainability of glaciers in the Himalaya basins like Astore and Jhelum would apparently be compensated by monsoon and change in rainfall pattern. A regular monitoring of the glacier resource and utilizing advance water conservation techniques would help in coping with negative impacts of downwasting of glaciers and provide long-term support to kuhl irrigation system in the Himalayan region in future.Arshad ASHRAF Adeela BATOOL 2019Journal of Mountain Science2019,16,5:0
