| 1 | Identification of a novel mutation in POU3F4 for prenatal diagnosis in a Chinese family with X-linked nonsyndromic hearing loss显示文摘We present the clinical and genetic findings for a Chinese family with X-linked non-syndromic hearing loss in which the affected males showed congenital profound sensorineural hearing impairment. In two affected brothers, the computer tomography of temporal bone showed bilateral dilation of the internal auditory canal with fistulous communication between the lateral canal and the basal cochlear turn, which is consistent with the typical DFNX2 phenotype. A missense mutation (c.647G→A) in the POU3F4 gene caused a substitu- tion from glycine to glutamic acid at position 216 (p.G216E), and this mutation was found to consistently cosegregate with the deafness phenotype in the family. The mutation resulted in the loss of function of the POU3F4 by decreasing the affinity between the protein and DNA, as shown in silico by the structural analysis. Prenatal diagnosis of pregnant proband of this family revealed the c.647G→A muta- tion in DNA extracted from the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus. | 4 | A study of the chemical composition and transport of marine aerosols over the ocean near China显示文摘In this paper the authors cite the aerosol samples collected with a KA-200 Anderson cascade Impactor and a KB-120 sampler during the first cruise of the Kuroshio investigation operated by the People’s Republic of China and Japan cooperative program, from July 23 to August 21, 1987. The concentration size distributions and composition of marine aerosols over the Kuroshio area are analyzed. Neutron activation analysis is used to determine the elemental composition of the aerosols. The authors also discuss some characteristics of marine aerosols relating to long-range transport of crustal and anthropogenic elements from the continent to the remote ocean. Analytical results indicate that elements Al, Fe, Sc and Sb over this area are obviously influenced by the continent of Asia, and the size distributions are changed after long-range transport. The concentration of large particles increase. | 12 | Detection of Early Noise-Induced Hearing Impairment in Pilots显示文摘Objective To detect early signs of noise-induced hearing loss(NIHL) in military pilots without hearing complaints. Methods Pure tone audiometry and acoustic reflex thresholds were tested in 36 military pilots (72 ears) with noise exposure history but no complaints of hearing loss. Conventional test frequencies (0.25-8 kHz) and extended high frequencies (EHF, 10 and 12.5 kHz) were included in audiometry. White noise and pure tones at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz were used for acoustic reflex tests. Twenty normal hearing subjects(40 ears) with no exposure to occupational noise were used as controls. Results Pure tone thresholds at all conventional frequencies and at EHFs were elevated in the pilots, with the maximum shift at 4 kHz, compared with controls (p < 0.01). The pilots also showed elevated ART to white noise and decreased differentials between white noise and pure tone ARTs (p< 0.01). Conclusion Early signs of NIHL are present in some symptom-free military pilots.
