A numerical study of the South China Sea deep circulation and its relation to the Luzon Strait transport显示文摘A fine-resolution MOM code is used to study the South China Sea basin-scale circulation and its relation to the mass transport through the Luzon Strait. The modal domain includes the South China Sea, part of the East China Sea, and part of the Philippine Sea so that the currents in the vicinity of the Luzon Strait are free to evolve. In addition, all channels between the South China ,Sea and the Indonesian seas are closed so that the focus is on the Luzon Strait transport. The model is driven by specified Philippine Sea currents and by surface heat and salt flux conditions. For simplicity, no windstress is applied at the surface. The simulated Luzon Strait transport and the South China Sea circulation feature a sandwich vertical structure from the surface to the bottom. The Philippine Sea water is simulated to enter the South China Sea at the surface and in the deep ocean and is carried to the southern basin by western boundary currents. At the intermediate depth, the net Luzon Strait transport is out of the South China Sea and is fed by a western boundary current flowing to the north at the base of the thermocline. Corresponding to the western boundary currents, the basin circulation of the South China Sea is cyclonic gyres at the surface and in the abyss but an anti-cyclonic gyre at the intermediate depth. The vorticity balance of the gyre circulation is between the vortex stretching and the meridional change of the planetary vorticity.Based on these facts, it is hypothesized that the Luzon Strait transports are determined by the diapycnal mixing inside the entire South China Sea. The South China Sea plays the role of a 'mixing mill' that mixes the surface and deep waters to return them to the Luzon Strait at the intermediate depth. The gyre structures are consistent with the Stommel and Arons theory (1960), which suggests that the mixlng-induced circulation inside the South China Sea should be cyclonic gyres at the surface and at the bottom but an anti-cyclonic gyre at the intermediate depth. The simulated gyre circulation at the intermediate depth has been confirmed by the dynamic height calculation based on the Levitns hydrography data. The sandwich transports in the Luzon Strait are consistent with recent hydrographic, al observations.Model results suggest that the Kuroshio tends to form a loop current in the northeastern South China Sea. The simulated Kuroshio Loop Current is generated by the pressure head at the Pacific side of the Luzon Strait and is enhanced by theβ- plane effects. The β- plane appears to be of paramount importance to the South China Sea circulation and to the Luzon Strait translports. Without theβ-plane, the Luzon Strait transports would be greatly reduced and the South China Sea circulation would be complete-ly different.Yuan Dongliang1. 2Microarray,SAGE and their applications to cardiovascular diseases显示文摘The wealth of DNA data generated by the human genome project coupling with recently invented high-throughput gene expression profiling techniques has dramatically sped up the process for biomedical researchers on elucidating the role of genes in human diseases. One powerful method to reveal insight into gene functions is the systematic analysis of gene expression. Two popular high-throughput gene expression technologies, microarray and Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SAGE) are capable of producing large amounts of gene expression data with the potential of providing novel insights into fundamental disease processes, especially complex syndromes such as cardiovascular disease, whose etiologies are due to multiple genetic factors and their interplay with the environment. Microarray and SAGE have already been used to examine gene expression patterns of cell-culture, animal and human tissues models of cardiovascular diseases. In this review, we will first give a brief introduction of microarray and SAGE technologies and point out their limitations. We will then discuss the major discoveries and the new biological insightsthat have emerged from their applications to cardiovascular diseases. Finally we will touch upon potential challenges and future developments in this area.SHUI QING YE, TERA LAVOIE, DAVID C USHER, LI Q. 10Modeling and simulation of ion channels and action potentials in taste receptor cells显示文摘Based on patch clamp data on the ionic currents of rat taste receptor cells, a mathematical model of mammalian taste receptor cells was constructed to simulate the action potentials of taste receptor cells and their corresponding ionic components, including voltage-gated Na+ currents and outward delayed rectifier K+ currents. Our simulations reproduced the action potentials of taste receptor cells in response to electrical stimuli or sour tastants. The kinetics of ion channels and their roles in action potentials of taste receptor cells were also analyzed. Our prototype model of single taste receptor cell and simulation results presented in this paper provide the basis for the further study of taste information processing in the gustatory system.CHEN PeiHua1, LIU Xiao-dong2, ZHANG Wei1, ZHOU Jun1, WANG Ping1, YANG Wei3 & LUO JianHong3 1Biosensor National Special Laboratory, Key Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering of Ministry of Education, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310027, China 2Calcium Signals Lab, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD 21205, USA 3Department of Neurobiology, Institute for Neuroscience, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou 310058, China 2009Science China(Life Sciences)2009,52,11:1

Family lifestyle factors related to children's congenital heart defects in China:a case-control study显示文摘Objective To explore the multiple risk factors for family lifestyle of children with congenital heart defects(CHDs)in Shaanxi Province,China. Methods A 1∶1 case-control study was carried out to investigate 60 pairs of children and their parents. The univariate and multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyze the influence of risk factors related to parents' lifestyle on CHDs.Results Several possible risk factors were found for CHDs,including fever(OR=4.465,P=0.017),pesticides contact(OR=2.234,P=0.083),passive smoking during pregnancy(OR=20.529,P=0.007)and father's smoking(OR=3.342,P=0.005);fever(OR=2.428,P=0.012)and passive smoking during pregnancy(OR=1.201,P=0.037)were also correlated with ventricular sepal defect(VSD).Conclusion Fever, pesticides contact and passive smoking are associated with CHDs during pregnancy. We should focus our attention on health care during pregnancy to avoid the above-mentioned risk factors and call on parents to hold on to a good healthy lifestyle.Jing Xu1,Fen Li1,Ting Gong2,Hui Song1,Hui Huang3 1.Center of Maternal and Child Health, the First Affiliated Hospital,Medical School of Xi’an Jiaotong University,Xi’an 710061,China 2.Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital of Shaanxi Province,Xi’an 710003,China 3.University of Maryland,Baltimore,MD 21250,USA 2010Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2010,22,4:1
The Degree of Symmetry of Certain Compact Smooth Manifolds II显示文摘We give the sharp estimates for the degree of symmetry and the semi-simple degree of symmetry of certain compact fiber bundles with non-trivial four dimensional fibers in the sense of cobordism, by virtue of the rigidity theorem of harmonic maps due to Schoen and Yau (Topology, 18, 1979, 361-380). As a corollary of this estimate, we compute the degree of symmetry and the semi-simple degree of symmetry of CP2×V, where V is a closed smooth manifold admitting a real analytic Riemannian metric of non-positive curvature. In addition, by the Albanese map, we obtain the sharp estimate of the degree of symmetry of a compact smooth manifold with some restrictions on its one dimensional cohomology.Bin XU Department of Mathematics, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230026, China Chern Institute of Mathematics, Nankai University, Tianjin 300071, China Department of Mathematics, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD 21218, USA. 2007Chinese Annals of Mathematics,Series B2007,28,2:0
Age-associated alternations in cardiac β-adrenergic receptor signaling显示文摘During aging, cardiac contractile response to β-AR stimulation is decreased in humans and animal models. Recent studies demonstrate that the positive inotropic effects of both β1-AR and β2-AR stimulation are significantly decreased with aging. This is accompanied by decreases in both β-AR subtype densities and a reduction in membrane adenylyl cyclase activity. However, neither G protein-coupled receptor kinases (GRKs) nor inhibitory G proteins (Gi) appears to contribute to the age-associated reduction in the β-AR modulation of contraction. Thus, while both aging and chronic heart failure exhibit a diminution in cardiac β-AR responsiveness, only heart failure exhibits increased GRK-mediated desensitization ofβ-Ars and an upregulation of Gi proteins.Jing MA, Shiwen WANG, Ruiping XIAO The Institute of Molecular Medicine & the Institute of Cardiovascular Science, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China The Institute of Geriatric Cardiology, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing 100853, China Laboratory of Cardiovascular Science, Gerontology Research Center, National Institute on Aging, Baltimore, MD 21224, USA 2005Journal of Geriatric Cardiology2005,2,4:0
PROBING THE EARLY UNIVERSE WITH DEEP OBSERVATIONS AND LARGE SURVEYS显示文摘Recent advances in astronomy have enabled scientists to reach the early universe to an unprecedented depth. With the new telescopes such as the Chandra, FUSE, and with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we have gained critical insights into the 'Origin of our Universe', i.e. how the intergalactic medium evolves to form galaxies and quasars. SDSS has broken a ten-year barrier of z=5 to reach the very early universe, with the discovery of five quasars at z  5.0. The survey will find more than ten thousands of quasars, enabling us to carry out the most comprehensive classification of quasars. FUSE finds traces of the primordial matter at z ~3, which corresponds to hydrogen column density as low as 10 -11 cm -2 and cannot be detected even with the largest optical telescope. The finding suggests that the intergalactic medium is an evolving and complex entity, and it is ionized mainly by the accumulated radiation from quasars. The Chandra telescope has taken a million second deep exposure of a selected region, reaching about twenty times deeper than ROSAT to a limiting flux of 5 × 10 -17 ergs s -1 cm -2 in the 0.5-2 keV band. The sources found so far can account for up to 90% of the hard X-ray background field, and they consist of Seyfert-2 and normal galaxies at z < 1 and quasars at z < 4.5. In the near future, the Next Generation Space Telescope and others will reveal the first generation of baryonic objects after the Big Bang.Zheng Wei (Department of Physics and Astronomy, The Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, MD 21218-2686, USA) (Center for Astrophysics University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, AnHui, 230026) 2001中国科学院上海天文台年刊2001,,1:0
