| 1 | Critical analysis of molluscicide application in schistosomiasis control programs in Brazil显示文摘In Brazil,Biomphalaria glabrata,B.tenagophila,and B.straminea are naturally infected by the trematode Schistosoma mansoni,the causative agent of schistosomiasis.Despite decades of governmental efforts through official control programs,schistosomiasis remains an important public health problem in the country:thousands of people are infected with the trematode each year and millions live in endemic areas.The World Health Organization recommends using a combination of molluscicide(niclosamide)and mass chemotherapy to control the transmission of schistosomiasis,with this treatment successfully reducing the morbidity of the disease.In the past,niclosamide has been used in official schistosomiasis control programs in Brazil.However,as B.glabrata recolonizes even after molluscicide application,the use of molluscicides has gradually decreased in the country until they were discontinued in 2002,mainly due to the rising global pressure to preserve the environment and the difficulties of obtaining licenses from the Brazilian Ministry of Environment to use toxic substances in aquatic ecosystems.Therefore,the discovery of new molluscicides,which could be more selective to Biomphalaria species and less harmful to the aquatic ecosystem,is necessary.In addition,political efforts to sensitize funders to provide grants for this field of research are required.In this context,this article aims to make a critical analysis of molluscicide application in schistosomiasis control programs in Brazil. | PMZ Coelho RL Caldeira | 2016 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2016，5，1： | 4 |

| 5 | Parathyroid ultrasonography and bone metabolic profile of patients on dialysis with hyperparathyroidism显示文摘AIM To evaluate the parathyroid ultrasonography and define parameters that can predict poor response to treatment in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism due to renal failure.METHODS This cohort study evaluated 85 patients with chronic kidney disease stage V with parathyroid hormone levels above 800 pg/mL. All patients underwent ultrasonography of the parathyroids and the following parameters were analyzed: Demographic characteristics(etiology of chronic kidney disease, gender, age, dialysis vintage, vascular access, use of vitamin D), laboratory(calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, alkaline phosphatase, bone alkaline phosphatase), and the occurrence of bone changes, cardiovascular events and death. The χ~2 test were used to compare proportions or the Fisher exact test for small sample frequencies. Student t-test was used to detect differences between the two groups regarding continuous variables.RESULTS Fifty-three patients(66.4%) had parathyroid nodules with higher levels of parathyroid hormone, calcium and phosphorus. Sixteen patients underwent parathyroidectomy and had higher levels of phosphorus and calcium × phosphorus product(P = 0.03 and P = 0.006, respectively). They also had lower mortality(32% vs 68%, P = 0.01) and lower incidence of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events(27% vs 73%, P = 0.02). Calcium × phosphorus product above 55 mg^2/dL^2 [RR 1.48(1.06, 2.08), P = 0.03], presence of vascular calcification [1.33(1.01, 1.76), P = 0.015] and previous occurrence of vascular events [RR 2.25(1.27, 3.98), P < 0.001] were risk factors for mortality in this population. | 6 | A 32-million year cycle detected in sea-level fluctuations over the last 545 Myr显示文摘Spectral analyses of past relative sea-level oscillations as represented by the ages of 57 Phanerozoic(the last 545 Myr)stratigraphic sequence boundaries from the Canadian Arctic show a strong spectral peak at 32 Myr(>99.9%confidence).These findings concur with previous reports of significant cycles with periods of around 30 Myr in various records of fluctuations of sea level,and in potentially related episodes of tectonism,volcanism,climate,and biotic extinctions.Sequence boundaries commonly coincide with stage boundaries based on biostratigraphy,and are correlated with episodes of extinction and times of flood-basalt volcanism.The connection between tectonics and sea-level variations may come from changes in rates of ocean-floor spreading and subduction,intraplate stresses from plate-reorganizations,and pulsations of hotspot volcanism.These coordinated periodic fluctuations in tectonics,sea level and climate may be modulated by cyclical activity in the Earth’s mantle,although some pacing by astronomical cycles is suspected. | Michael R.Rampino Ken Caldeira | 2020 | Geoscience Frontiers2020，11，6： | 2 |
