Ambient air pollution and low temperature associated with case fatality of COVID-19: A nationwide retrospective cohort study in China显示文摘The evidence for the effects of environmental factors on COVID-19 case fatality remains controversial, and it is crucial to understand the role of preventable environmental factors in driving COVID-19 fatality. We thus conducted a nationwide cohort study to estimate the effects of environmental factors(temperature, particulate matter[PM2.5,PM10],sulfur dioxide[SO2],nitrogen dioxide[NO2],and ozone[O3])on COVID-19 case fatality.A total of 71,808 confirmed COVID-19 cases were identified and followed up for their vital status through April 25,2020.Exposures to ambient air pollution and temperature were estimated by linking the city-and county-level monitoring data to the residential community of each participant. For each participant, two windows were defined:the period from symptom onset to diagnosis(exposure window I)and the period from diagnosis date to date of death/recovery or end of the study period(exposure window II).Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the associations between these environmental factors and COVID-19 case fatality.COVID-19 case fatality increased in association with environmental factors for the two exposure windows. For example, each 10 mg/m^(3) increase in PM2.5,PM10,O3,and NO2 in window I was associated with a hazard ratio of 1.11(95%CI 1.09,1.13),1.10(95%CI 1.08,1.13),1.09(95 CI 1.03,1.14),and 1.27(95%CI 1.19,1.35)for COVID-19 fatality, respectively.A significant effect was also observed for low temperature, with a hazard ratio of 1.03(95%CI 1.01,1.04)for COVID-19 case fatality per 1C decrease.Subgroup analysis indicated that these effects were stronger in the elderly,as well as in those with mild symptoms and living in Wuhan or Hubei.Overall, the sensitivity analyses also yielded consistent estimates.Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and low temperature during the illness would play a nonnegligible part in causing case fatality due to COVID-19.Reduced exposures to high concentrations of PM2.5,PM10,O3,SO2,and NO2 and low temperature would help improve the prognosis and reduce public health burden.Fei Tian Xiaobo Liu Qingchen Chao Zhengmin(Min)Qian Siqi Zhang Li Qi Yanlin Niu Lauren DArnold Shiyu Zhang Huan Li Hualiang Lin Qiyong Liu 2021The Innovation2021,2,3:2

China’s Carbon Neutrality: Leading Global Climate Governance and Green Transformation显示文摘China aims to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.It is a strategic decision made after deliberate consideration by the Central Government.Such goals reflect China’s responsibility as a major country in responding to global climate change, its vision of the future world development, and its commitment to green transformation. After the 18th CPC National Congress,China has undergone a fundamental change in its development philosophy.Protecting the environment is no longer regarded as a burden upon economic growth, but as a driving force for high-quality development.Emissions reduction has also changed from a task inflicted upon local governments to a goal people identify with.More than 120 countries have proposed carbon neutrality targets in different ways by now.The global consensus on carbon neutrality marks the end of the traditional industrial era and the start of a new development era.The concept of carbon neutrality redefines and reshapes the entire development paradigm. It is a self-revolution of the mode of production and life.It not only poses an unprecedented challenge but also provides a strategic opportunity for China.China is likely to lead the world in future green transformation and global climate governance.ZHANG Yongsheng CHAO Qingchen CHEN Ying ZHANG Jianyu WANG Mou ZHANG Ying YU Xiang 2021Chinese Journal of Urban and Environmental Studies2021,9,3:1

Assessment of wind and photovoltaic power potential in China显示文摘Decarbonization of the energy system is the key to China’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.However,the potential of wind and photovoltaic(PV)to power China remains unclear, hindering the holistic layout of the renewable energy development plan. Here,we used the wind and PV power generation potential assessment system based on the Geographic Information Systems(GIS)method to investigate the wind and PV power generation potential in China.Firstly, the high spatial-temporal resolution climate data and the mainstream wind turbines and PV modules, were used to assess the theoretical wind and PV power generation. Then, the technical, policy and economic(i.e.,theoretical power generation)constraints for wind and PV energy development were comprehensively considered to evaluate the wind and solar PV power generation potential of China in 2020.The results showed that, under the current technological level, the wind and PV installed capacity potential of China is about 56.55 billion kW,which is approximately 9 times of those required under the carbon neutral scenario. The wind and PV power generation potential of China is about 95.84 PWh,which is approximately 13 times the electricity demand of China in 2020.The rich areas of wind power generation are mainly distributed in the western, northern, and coastal provinces of China. While the rich areas of PV power generation are mainly distributed in western and northern China.Besides, the degree of tapping wind and PV potential in China is not high, and the installed capacity of most provinces in China accounted for no more than 1%of the capacity potential, especially in the wind and PV potential-rich areas.Yang Wang Qingchen Chao Lin Zhao Rui Chang 2022Carbon Neutrality2022,1,1:1

A new era of China-Germany joint research exploring the climate mystery of Earth显示文摘China and Germany have a long history of collaborating in the Earth sciences. One example is the collaborative work in plumbing the mysteries of climate in China. German geographer Prof. Dr. Ferdinand von Richthofen led the first scientific expedition of the Loess Plateau and Lop Nur during the 1870s. The expedition established the theory of the eolian origin of the plateau. 12Identification of cross-reactive CD8^(+)T cell receptors with high functional avidity to a SARS-CoV-2 immunodominant epitope and its natural mutant variants显示文摘Despite the growing knowledge of T cell responses in COVID-19 patients, there is a lack of detailed characterizations for T cell-antigen interactions and T cell functions. Here, with a predicted peptide library from SARS-CoV-2 S and N proteins,we found that specific CD8+T cell responses were identified in over 75%of COVID-19 convalescent patients(15/20)and an epitope from the N protein,N361-369(KTFPPTEPK),was the most dominant epitope from our selected peptide library.Importantly,we discovered 2 N361-369-specific T cell receptors(TCRs)with high functional avidity that were independent of the CD8 co-receptor.These TCRs exhibited complementary cross-reactivity to several presently reported N361-369 mutant variants,as to the wild-type epitope.Further, the natural functions of these TCRs in the cytotoxic immunity against SARS-CoV-2 were determined with dendritic cells(DCs)and the lung organoid model. We found that the N361-369 epitope could be normally processed and endogenously presented by these different types of antigen presenting cells,to elicit successful activation and effective cytotoxicity of CD8+T cells ex vivo. Our study evidenced potential mechanisms of cellular immunity to SARS-CoV-2,and illuminated potential ways of viral clearance in COVID-19 patients. These results indicate that utilizing CD8-independent TCRs against SARS-CoV-2-associated antigens may provide functional superiority that is beneficial for the adoptive cell immunotherapies based on natural or genetically engineered T cells.Additionally, this information is highly relevant for the development of the next-generation vaccines with protections against continuously emerged SARS-CoV-2 mutant strains.Chao Hu Meiying Shen Xiaojian Han Qian Chen Luo Li Siyin Chen Jing Zhang Fengxia Gao Wang Wang Yingming Wang Tingting Li Shenglong Li Jingjing Huang Jianwei Wang Ju Zhu Dan Chen Qingchen Wu Kun Tao Da Pang Aishun Jin 2022Genes & Diseases2022,9,1:0

Analysis of gender equality in climate governance显示文摘Gender equality is a yardstick for measuring the progress of social civilization and an important goal for mankind to achieve sustainable development. The importance of women in the global governance of climate change is self-evident.During the global climate change governance,it is very crucial to focus on achieving gender equality.Under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is the main channel of global climate change governance, the gender-specific climate change agenda started later than other topics and the progress is limited. This article summarized the progress, deficiencies and future directions of gender issues under the main channels of global climate governance, analyzed the current status of gender equality in Chinese climate response actions, and pointed out the progress and deficiencies of women in the fundamental scientific research and the participation in global governance and decision-making.Our research finds that in the current process of international climate change governance, gender issues have received adequate attention. While in China, despite the attention paid to gender issues, the practical action on gender equality is still out of the mainstream agenda. In the past few decades,Chinese women have made gratifying progress in basic scientific research on climate change and global climate governance, but there are still great insufficiencies in the field of decision-making.In the future,China needs to pay more attention to emphasize gender equality at the strategic level, and promote the formulation of policies and regulations in the field of gender and climate change.Increasing the proportion of women participating in decision-making and management in the field of climate change and disaster prevention and mitigation is also important.China also needs to focus on enabling a gender friendly environment and strengthening research on gender and climate change, support women's participation in relevant work, strengthen capacity-building,and enhance women's access to resources, funds, knowledge and information related to climate adaptation or mitigation.Yongxiang Zhang Lei Huang Qingchen Chao Qingwen Yang Chao Chen 2021Chinese Journal of Population,Resources and Environment2021,19,1:0
