Environmental and technological effects on ancient social evolution at different spatial scales显示文摘The rise and fall of ancient cultures and civilizations is a hotly debated topic that has generated disagreements and disputes. In this paper we summarize some case studies on the abandonment of ancient sites, the prosperity and collapse of ancient cultures, and demographic changes, as well as the influence of environment and technology during the prehistoric and historic periods. We then suggest that the dominant influencing factors for the evolution of ancient societies vary by spatial scale. At the local scale, sudden disasters are critical factors leading to the destruction and abandonment of large settlements. On a regional scale, climatic variations(e.g., droughts or cold events lasting for decades or centuries) are important factors that induce the collapse of ancient civilizations and mass migrations, while an enduring and stable optimal climate facilitated the prosperity of ancient civilizations. On a global scale, major technological innovations and their dispersion lasting for centuries and even millennia are major catalysts for population growth and social development. Lastly, we illustrate a possible mechanism under which environmental and technological factors played a critical role in ancient human survival and social evolution on different spatial scales. | DONG GuangHui LIU FengWen CHEN FaHu | 2017 | Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,12: | 10
Post COVID-19 burden:focus on the short-term condition显示文摘The catastrophic pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)has caused serious harm to human life and global social economy. As of June 13,2022,there were more than 530 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and over 6.3 million deaths[1].During the past 2 years, global studies on prevention and therapies for COVID-19 have achieved a series of promising findings, including antiviral drugs(Remdesivir,Molnupiravir,Paxlovid)and monoclonal antibodies(Bamlanivimab and Etesevimab,Sotrovimab,Casirivimab and Imdevimab)[2]. | Fengwen Yang Bo Pang Xinyao Jin Zhe Chen Wentai Pang Qingquan Liu Junhua Zhang Boli Zhang | 2022 | Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine2022,2,3: | 2
The Controllable Design of Catalyst Inks to Enhance PEMFC Performance:A Review显示文摘Typical catalyst inks in proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs)are composed of a catalyst, its support,an ionomer and a solvent and are used with solution processing approaches to manufacture conventional catalyst layers(CLs).Because of this, catalyst ink formulation and deposition processes are closely related to CL structure and performance. However, catalyst inks with ideal rheology and optimized electrochemical performances remain lacking in the large-scale application of PEMFCs.To address this, this review will summarize current progress in the formulation, characterization, modeling and deposition of catalyst inks.In addition, this review will highlight recent advancements in catalyst ink materials and discuss corresponding complex interactions. This review will also present various catalyst ink dispersion methods with insights into their stability and introduce the application of small-angle scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy(cryo-TEM)technologies in the characterization of catalyst ink microstructures. Finally, recent studies in the kinetic modeling and deposition of catalyst inks will be analyzed. | Yuqing Guo Fengwen Pan Wenmiao Chen Zhiqiang Ding Daijun Yang Bing Li Pingwen Ming Cunman Zhang | 2021 | Electrochemical Energy Reviews2021,4,1: | 2

Undrained stability of pit-in-pit braced excavations under hydraulic uplift显示文摘Pit-in-pit(PIP)excavations in an aquifer–aquitard system likely undergo catastrophic failures under the hydraulic uplift, the associated undrained stability problem, however, has not been well analyzed in the past.To this end,a hypothetical model of PIP braced excavation in typical soil layers of Shanghai,China is developed using the finite element limit analysis(FELA)tool. The FELA solutions of safety factors(FSs)against hydraulic uplift are verified with the results from the finite element analysis with strength reduction technique(SRFEA)and existing design approaches.Subsequently,FELA is employed to identify the triggering and failure mechanisms of PIP braced excavations subjected to hydraulic uplift.A series of parametric studies considering the various geometric configurations of the PIP excavation, undrained shear strengths of aquitard, and artesian pressures are carried out.The sensitivities of relevant design parameters are further assessed using a multivariate adaptive regression splines(MARS)model that is capable of accurately capturing the nonlinear relationships between a set of input variables and output variables in multi-dimensions.A MARS-based design equation used for predicting FS is finally presented using the artificial dataset from FELA for practical design uses. | Fengwen Lai Fuquan Chen Songyu Liu Suraparb Keawsawasvong Jim Shiau | 2022 | Underground Space2022,7,6: | 1

Pt‑Based Intermetallic Compound Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction:Structural Control at the Atomic Scale to Achieve a Win–Win Situation Between Catalytic Activity and Stability显示文摘The development of ordered Pt-based intermetallic compounds is an effective way to optimize the electronic characteristics of Pt and its disordered alloys, inhibit the loss of transition metal elements, and prepare fuel cell catalysts with high activity and long-term durability for the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).This paper reviews the structure–activity characteristics, research advances, problems, and improvements in Pt-based intermetallic compound fuel cell catalysts for the ORR.First, the structural characteristics and performance advantages of Pt-based intermetallic compounds are analyzed and explained.Second, starting with 3d transition metals such as Fe,Co,and Ni,whose research achievements are common, the preparation process and properties of Pt-based intermetallic compound catalysts for the ORR are introduced in detail according to element types.Third,in view of preparation problems, improvements in the preparation processes of Pt-based intermetallic compounds are also summarized in regard to four aspects:coating to control the crystal size, doping to promote ordering transformation, constructing a“Pt skin”to improve performance, and anchoring and confinement to enhance the interaction between the crystal and support. Finally,by analyzing the research status of Pt-based intermetallic compound catalysts for the ORR,prospective research directions are suggested. | Jue Wang Fengwen Pan Wenmiao Chen Bing Li Daijun Yang Pingwen Ming Xuezhe Wei Cunman Zhang | 2023 | Electrochemical Energy Reviews2023,6,1: | 0

Physics-based and data-driven modeling for stability evaluation of buried structures in natural clays显示文摘This study presents a hybrid framework to predict stability solutions of buried structures under active trapdoor conditions in natural clays with anisotropy and heterogeneity by combining physics-based and data-driven modeling.Finite-element limit analysis(FELA)with a newly developed anisotropic undrained shear(AUS)failure criterion is used to identify the underlying active failure mechanisms as well as to develop a numerical(physics-based)database of stability numbers for both planar and circular trapdoors.Practical considerations are given for natural clays to three linearly increasing shear strengths in compression, extension, and direct simple shear in the AUS material model. The obtained numerical solutions are compared and validated with published solutions in the literature.A multivariate adaptive regression splines(MARS)algorithm is further utilized to learn the numerical solutions to act as fast FELA data-driven surrogates for stability evaluation. The current MARS-based modeling provides both relative importance index and accurate design equations that can be used with confidence by practitioners. | Fengwen Lai Jim Shiau Suraparb Keawsawasvong Fuquan Chen Rungkhun Banyong Sorawit Seehavong | 2023 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2023,15,5: | 0
