| 1 | Low prevalence of epilepsy and onchocerciasis after more than 20 years of ivermectin treatment in the Imo River Basin in Nigeria显示文摘Background:High epilepsy prevalence and incidence have been reported in areas with high onchocerciasis transmission.Recent findings suggest that proper community-directed treatment with ivermectin(CDTI)is potentially able to prevent onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy(OAE).We assessed the epilepsy prevalence and onchocerciasis transmission in two Nigerian villages following more than 20 years of CDTI.Methods:A cross-sectional door-to-door survey was performed in two villages in the Imo River Basin reported to be mesoendomic for onchocerciasis(Umuoparaodu and Umuezeala).Individuals were screened for epilepsy using a validated 5-item questionnaire.Persons suspected to have epilepsy were examined by a neurologist or a physician with training in epilepsy for confirmation.Onchocerciasis was investigated via skin snip microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests for Ov16 antibodies.Results were compared with previous findings from the Imo river basin.Results:A total of 843 individuals from 257 households in the two villages were encountered.We detected four persons with epilepsy(PWE)giving a crude epilepsy prevalence of 0.5%.This finding differs from observations reported 14 years ago which showed an epilepsy prevalence of 2.8%in the neighbouring village of Umulolo(P=0.0001),and 1.2%from 13 villages in the Imo river basin(P=0.07).The seroprevalence of Ov16 antibodies was found to be 0%.Only 4.6%of skin snips were positive compared to 26.8%in previous surveys(P<0.0001).Ivermectin mass distribution coverage in the study sites in 2017 was 79.7%.Conclusions:A low epilepsy and onchocerciasis prevalence was observed following more than 20 years of CDTI in the Imo River Basin.Absence of Ov16 antibodies indicates minimal transmission of onchocerciasis.These results contrast with observations from areas of high onchocerciasis transmission,where epilepsy prevalence and incidence remain high.Findings from this study suggest that sustained efforts could eventually achieve elimination of onchocerciasis in these villages. | Joseph N.F.Siewe Chinyere N.Ukaga Ernest O.Nwazor Murphy O.Nwoke Modebelu C.Nwokeji Blessing C.Onuoha Simon O.Nwanjor Joel Okeke Kate Osahor Lilian Chimechefulam Ann I.Ogomaka Augustine A.Amaechi Chika I.Ezenwa Monika N.Ezike Chidimma I.kpeama Ogechi Nwachukwu Austine I.Eriama-Joseph Berthram E.B.Nwoke Robert Colebunders | 2019 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2019，8，1： | 2 |
| 2 | Effect of Anthocleista djalonensis A. Chev Root Extract on Testis of Matured Rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate the effects of different extracts of Anthocleista djalonensis on the testis and epididymal sperms of rats.Methods:Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 10 groups(n=5 in each group)and orally treated with 50,100 and 200 mg/kg body weight each of methanol,aqueous ethanol(H-EtOH)and chloroform extracts of A.djalonensis.Corn oil was used as vehicle(2 mL/kg).After 60 days of treatment,testosterone(T)and cholesterol(CHOL)concentrations,catalase(CAT),lactate dehydrogenase(LDH),3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase(3β-HSD)and superoxide dismutase(SOD)activities in the testes along with myeloperoxidase(MPO)activities and nitrite concentrations(NO)in the serum and testes as well as sperm quality were measured.Results:T and CHOL concentrations along with 3β-HSD activity were significantly higher in the animals treated with the low dose than in those treated with the high dose of the chloroform extract(P<0.05).Furthermore,the chloroform extract was more effective than the methanol extract that had the most marginal effect on T level at the high dose and the H-Et OH extract that was only effective at the medium dose.LDH activity was dose-dependently increased by the extracts in all groups.The CAT-SOD antioxidant system was increased in the treated animals at all doses compared to the control values,but the increase in glutathione level reached significant level in those treated with the low dose H-Et OH aqueous ethanol extract(P<0.05).Only the high dose of chloroform extract had significant inhibitory effects on MPO activity(P<0.05).Serum NO concentration was decreased at all doses of the extracts.The inhibitory effects of the extracts on testicular NO concentrations follow this order,chloroform extract>H-Et OH>methanol.Although all extracts at all doses showed excellent stimulatory effects on sperm quality(count,motility and morphology),the methanol extract at the high dose was the most effective on sperm count(P<0.05).Conclusion:The chloroform extract of A.djalonensis has better androgen-like and anti-inflammatory effects whereas the methanol extract has the best effect on sperm count. | Chioma Yvonne Ezirim Sunny O.Abarikwu Chidimma J.Mgbudom-Okah Augustine A.Uwakwe Rex-Clovis C.Njoku Aemere Ogunlaja | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine2020，26，12： | 1 |

| 8 | When Conscious Consumerism Backfires:A Critical Study on Social Exclusion,Partnerships,and White Saviorism显示文摘Purpose:What factors influence conscious consumerism,especially related to race and gender identities?This scholarship explores three white women-led social responsibility organizations’(SROs)aspirations to encourage conscious consumerism as well as factors that influence conscious consumerism.Design/methodology/approach:Using the Black feminist thought and sustainability development theory,the data were analyzed using a thematic analysis to explore the activation of the white savior industrial complex(WSIC)in SROs.Interviews provided in-depth knowledge of the SRO culture including,but not limited to,insight on social exclusion and partnerships.Findings:Noonday Collection,Sseko Designs,and Trades of Hope,all SROs,aspire to be dedicated to people,planet,and profit and encourage conscious consumerism as a means for their customer base and sales consultants to“do their part”,and yet,an unintended consequence of the SROs’work is social exclusion and white saviorism.Originality:This scholarship investigates what can be done to dismantle the overreliance of conscious consumerism in an effort to finally strip white saviorism,and its role in the white savior industrial complex(WSIC),of its power. | Chidimma Ozor Commer | 2024 | Journal of Sociology Study2024，14，1： | 0 |
