1Modelling sulphate-enhanced cadmium uptake by Zea mays from nutrient solution under conditions of constant free Cd^(2+) ion activity显示文摘A controlled hydroponic experiment was undertaken to investigate Cd uptake in relation to the activity of Cd species in solution other than the free ion(Cd2+) by maintaining a constant Cd2+ activity under variable SO42-and Cl-concentrations exposed to maize(Zea mays var.Cameron) plants.The objectives of these experiments were:(1) to distinguish and quantify the different uptake rates of free and inorganic-complexed Cd from nutrient solution,and(2) to model the uptake of Cd by maize with a Biotic Ligand Model(BLM) in a system which facilitates the close examination of root characteristics.Results of the current experiments suggest that,in addition to the free ion,CdSO40 complexes are important factors in determining Cd uptake in nutrient solution by maize plants.Higher nominal SO42-concentrations in solution generally resulted in a greater Cd accumulation by maize plants than predicted by the Cd2+ activity.A better integration of the complete dataset for the 3 harvest times(6,9 and 11 days after treatment) was achieved by including consideration of both the duration of Cd exposure and especially the root surface area to express Cd uptake.Similarly,the fit of the BLM was also improved when taking into account exposure time and expressing uptake in terms of root morphological parameters.Ulrico J.López-Chuken Scott D.Young 2010Journal of Environmental Sciences2010,22,7:3

11On Monetizing Personal Wearable Devices Data:A Blockchain-based Marketplace for Data Crowdsourcing and Federated Machine Learning in Healthcare显示文摘Machine learning advancements in healthcare have made data collected through smartphones and wearable devices a vital source of public health and medical insights.While wearable device data help to monitor,detect,and predict diseases and health conditions,some data owners hesitate to share such sensitive data with companies or researchers due to privacy concerns.Moreover,wearable devices have been recently available as commercial products;thus large,diverse,and representative datasets are not available to most researchers.In this article,the authors propose an open marketplace where wearable device users securely monetize their wearable device records by sharing data with consumers(e.g.,researchers)to make wearable device data more available to healthcare researchers.To secure the data transactions in a privacy-preserving manner,the authors use a decentralized approach using Blockchain and Non-Fungible Tokens(NFTs).To ensure data originality and integrity with secure validation,the marketplace uses Trusted Execution Environments(TEE)in wearable devices to verify the correctness of health data.The marketplace also allows researchers to train models using Federated Learning with a TEE-backed secure aggregation of data users may not be willing to share.To ensure user participation,we model incentive mechanisms for the Federated Learning-based and anonymized data-sharing approaches using NFTs.The authors also propose using payment channels and batching to reduce smart contact gas fees and optimize user profits.If widely adopted,it’s believed that TEE and Blockchain-based incentives will promote the ethical use of machine learning with validated wearable device data in healthcare and improve user participation due to incentives.Mohamed Emish Hari Kishore Chaparala Zeyad Kelani Sean D.Young 2022Artificial Intelligence Advances2022,4,2:0

13Theory, simulation and experiment of optical properties of cobalt ferrite(CoFe2O4) nanoparticles显示文摘Optical properties of cobalt ferrite(CoFe2O4) nanoparticles are modeled and simulated employing finite element analysis(FEA) and density functional theory(DFT) for different particle sizes. The simulated absorption maxima of electronic excitations is red-shifted from 330 nm to 410 nm using finite element analysis and from 331.27 nm to 409.07 nm using quantum mechanical method, with increasing particle sizes from 40 nm to 50 nm. The measured absorption maxima matched the simulated results reasonably well and red-shifted to longer wavelengths from 315.59 nm to 426.73 nm with the increase in particle sizes from 30 nm to 50 nm. The DFT simulated, FEA simulated and experimentally derived optical band gap energies, Eg, were also acquired and compared. The simulated Egvalues decreased from 3.228 to 2.478 e V and from 3.266 to 2.456 e V, while the experimental Egvalue decreased from 3.473 to 2.697 e V, with increasing the particle sizes. The research demonstrated that the optical absorption of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles can be described with high accuracy using the quantum mechanical interpretation based on DFT. FEA based simulations have shown limitations for smaller(< 40 nm) nanoparticles likely due to the increased surface scattering that prevented a stable solution for simulations beyond the quasistatic limit. The DFT computational tool developed by this study can enable both the low cost computation and highly reliable prediction of optical absorption properties and optical band edges, and thus contribute to understanding and design of CoFe2O4 nanoparticle properties prior to fabrication and functionalization of them, for a wide range of applications especially for sensing and photonic wave modulations.Elham Gharibshahi Brandon D.Young Amar S.Bhalla Ruyan Guo 2020Journal of Materials Science & Technology2020,54,22:0
