2Influence of longwall mining on the stability of gas wells in chain pillars显示文摘Longwall mining has a significant influence on gas wells located within longwall chain pillars.Subsurface subsidence and abutment pressure induced by longwall mining can cause excessive stresses and deformations in gas well casings. If the gas well casings are compromised or ruptured, natural gas could migrate into the mine workings, potentially causing a fire or explosion.By the current safety regulations, the gas wells in the chain pillars have to be either plugged or protected by adequate coal pillars. The current regulations for gas well pillar design are based on the 1957 Pennsylvania gas well pillar study. The study provided guidelines for gas well pillars by considering their support area and overburden depth as well as the location of the gas wells within the pillars. As the guidelines were developed for room-andpillar mining under shallow cover, they are no longer applicable to modern longwall coal mining, particularly, under deep cover.Gas well casing of failures have occurred even though the chain pillars for the gas wells met the requirements by the 1957 study. This study, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH),presents seven cases of conventional gas wells penetrating through longwall chain pillars in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. The study results indicate that overburden depth and pillar size are not the only determining factors for gas well stability. The other important factors include subsurface ground movement, overburden geology, weak floor,as well as the type of the construction of gas wells.Numerical modeling was used to model abutment pressure, subsurface deformations, and the response of gas well casings. The study demonstrated that numerical models are able to predict with reasonable accuracy the subsurface deformations in the overburden above, within, and below the chain pillars, and the potential location and modes of gas well failures, thereby providing a more quantifiable approach to assess the stability of the gas wells in longwall chain pillars.Peter Zhang Heather Dougherty Daniel Su Jack Trackemas Berk Tulu 2020International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,1:2

9Preoperative virtual video visits only:a convenient option that should be offered to caregivers beyond the pandemic显示文摘Objective During the COVID-19 pandemic, our group implemented preoperative video visits(VVs)to limit physical contact. The aim of this study was to determine caregivers’and providers’perceptions of this practice and to determine feasibility for continuation. Methods All patients who had only a preoperative VV prior to an elective surgery were identified from March-October 2020.Caregivers,surgeons,and clinic staff were surveyed about their experiences. Results Thirty-four preoperative VVs were followed by an elective surgery without a preceding in-person visit.Of the 31 caregiver surveys completed, the majority strongly agreed that the VV was more convenient(87%,n=27).Eighty-one percent(n=25)strongly agreed or agreed that the VV saved them money.Ninety-four percent(n=29)strongly agreed or agreed that they would choose the VV option again.Caregivers saved an average travel distance of 60.3 miles one way(range 6.1-480).Of the 13/17 providers who responded,77%(n=10)expressed that the practice should continue. Conclusions Virtual health became a necessity during the pandemic, and caregivers were overwhelmingly satisfied.Continuing VVs as an option beyond the pandemic may be a reasonable and effective way to help eliminate some of the hurdles that impede healthcare-seeking behavior and should be offered.Danielle Dougherty Allison R Thompson Karen Elizabeth Speck Erin E Perrone 2022World Journal of Pediatric Surgery2022,5,3:1
10Racial disparities in the treatment of pancreatic cancer:results from the analysis of a National Database显示文摘Background:Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the US.There have been postulates of racial disparities.Based on this,we primarily examined the presence of race, for the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer. Methods:A retrospective review was conducted on patients with pancreatic cancers using the Surveillance Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare registry.Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed.Overall Survival analysis was done using the Kaplan-Meier curve.Comparison of survival curves was done using the log-rank test.Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to determine independent predictors of survival.Other areas focused on were time interval from diagnosis to treatment,“Predictors of surgery of the primary site,”“Predictors for recommending surgery of the primary site,”“Predictors for oncologic resection,”“Predictors of performance and refusal of surgery of primary site if recommended,”and“Predictors for any other therapy(all therapies excluding surgery)”.Results:A total of 52,951 patients were identified from the database.A total of 24,523 were males and 26,715 were females.A total of 81.9%were Caucasian,10.9%were Black, and 7.2%were other races. There was approximately equal distribution of the different stages between both genders.A total of 10.2%of the females were diagnosed at stage I,28.9%,9.3%,and 51.6%at stages I,III,and IV,respectively, compared to males with 8.4%,28.3%,9.2%,and 54.1%for stages I,II,III,and IV,respectively.A total of 9.5%of the Black patients were diagnosed at stage I,24.2%at stage II,10.1%at stage III,and 56.2%at stage IV.A similar distribution was noted in the other races.Black patients had worse overall survival when compared to Caucasians(P=.004)and other races(P=.001).Conclusion:Compared to Caucasian patients,Black patients with pancreatic cancer had worse overall survival.Chibueze Onyemkpa Danielle Dougherty Sajjaad Samat Tolutope Oyasiji Michael McLeod 2023Journal of Pancreatology2023,6,4:0
