| 1 | LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS IN SINE-GENERATED MEANDERING CHANNELS显示文摘The patterns (In flow plan) of rough turbulent steady flows in sine-generated meandering streams are investigated experimentally. The flow cross-section is rectangular, the flow width is uniform, the channel bed is flat; the plan shape is sine-generated. In contrast to previous works, where the computed flow patterns were of the same character, irrespective of the sinuosity of the channel, it is found, on the basis of present experiments, that every different Plan geometry of a meandering flow has its own flow picture. In the case of 'small' sinuosity, the flow convectively accelerates at the inner bank between the crossover-and apexsections; if, however, the sinuosity is 'large', the now convectively decelerates in the same region. The convergence-divergence areas (in flow Plan) of the present flows are in coincidence with the location of erosion-deposition zones in meandering streams, confirming that the convective behaviour of the vertically-averaged flow alone is sufficient to induce the bed and bank deformation. | A. | 2 | RATIONAL BASIS FOR SUSPENDED SEDIMENT MODELING显示文摘This paper presents a rational basis to model the transport of suspended sediment. The looseboundary condition for 3D models and the adjustment coefficients for both the depth-integrated 2D and laterally integrated 1D models are treated comprehensively. A combination of Dirichlet and Neumann conditions is proposed as the loose-boundary condition. The adjustment coefficient for 2D models is obtained on the basis of the proposed boundary condition and analytical solutions developed for some simple cases of non-equilibrium transport of sediment in uniform flows. The adjustment coefficient for 1D models for natural rivers is further obtained from lateral integration. | 11 | LONGITUDINAL DISPERSION IN OPEN-CHANNEL FLOW显示文摘Laboratory experiments on longitudinal dispersion in clear-water and sedimentladen flows are reported. These experiments indicate that the presence of suspended sediment does not have a significant effect on the dispersion process other than its possible effect on the friction factor. Analysis of the writers’ and other’s data collected in laboratory flumes and natural streams Shows that Taylor’s model of longitudinal dispersion based on one-dimensional Fickian diffusion equation with a constant dispersion coefficient, DL, is not suitable for describing the dispersion process in natural streams as DL tends to increase in the downstream direction. Therefore, a similarity analysis of the concentration distributions, on the lines of Day and Wood, has been carried out. | 13 | FIBER RESOURCE AVAILABILITY FOR THE CHINESE PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY显示文摘Total P & B production in China's Mainland has been reported to be 37.8 million metric tons for the year 2002. A goal of 50-60 million metric tons of total P & B production has been set for the year 2010. By that time, domestic virgin woodpulp production will be doubled, with pulpwood supply from plantations in the country and supplemented by imported woodchips and pulpwoods. Imported market woodpulp will still play an important role in the Chinese industry. Non-wood fibers will stay as an indispensable sustaining fibers source for the growth of the Chinese industry. Increases in reed, bamboo and wheat straw pulping capacities will be expected within the years. Efforts will have to be taken for the promotion of domestic wastepaper recycling, hoping to have the recycling rate upgraded to 35-38% by the end of this decade. The prototype data are those of Gezhouba on the Yangtze River and Danjiangkou on the Han River. The accuracy attained is in the neighborhood of 20% which is considered good enough in sedimentation engineering. Thus these techniques of modeling may be applied to forecast the impacts of hydraulic structures on an alluvial river. Flood control has always been a critical problem.Although prolong dry spell and large-scale withdrawal of river water by the riparian people have causedthe river to dry up for a certain period every year since 1972, flood is still threatening, because a dry spellmight well be followed by a wet one in the future. During the past dry years. however, the main channelhas been silted up in many places because of inadequate flow for the transport of heavy sediment load.The stages for the same flood would then be higher and the flow pattern more unpredictable. The leveesare thus exposed to greater danger. In order to restore the main channels, scour by diverting seawater isproposed. Altogether about 360 km of the river may be deepened.
