| 2 | Observations of the Karimata Strait througflow from December 2007 to November 2008显示文摘In order to quantitatively estimate the volume and property transports between the South China Sea and Indonesian Seas via the Karimata Strait, two trawl-resistant bottom mounts, with ADCPs embedded, were deployed in the strait to measure the velocity profile as part of the South China Sea-Indonesian Seas transport/exchange (SITE) program. A pair of surface and bottom acoustic modems was employed to transfer the measured velocity without recovering the mooring. The advantage and problems of the instruments in this field work are reported and discussed. The field observations confirm the existence of the South China Sea branch of Indonesian throughflow via the Karimata Strait with a stronger southward flow in boreal winter and weaker southward bottom flow in boreal summer, beneath the upper layer northward (reversal) flow. The estimate of the averaged volume, heat and freshwater transports from December 2007 to March 2008 (winter) is (-2.7 ± 1.1) × 10 6 m3/s, (-0.30 ± 0.11) PW, (-0.18 ± 0.07) × 106m3/s and from May to September 2008 (summer) is (1.2 ± 0.6) × 106m3/s, (0.14 ± 0.03) PW, (0.12 ± 0.04) × 106m3/s and for the entire record from December 2007 to October 2008 is (-0.5 ± 1.9) × 10 6 m3/s, (-0.05 ± 0.22) PW, (-0.01 ± 0.15) × 106m3/s (negative/positive represents southward/northward transport), respectively. The existence of southward bottom flow in boreal summer implies that the downward sea surface slope from north to south as found by Fang et al. | 3 | Role of ^(18)F-FDG PET/CT in pre and post treatment evaluation in head and neck carcinoma显示文摘Head and neck cancer(HNC) ranks as the 6th most common cancer worldwide, with the vast majority being head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC). The majority of patients present with complicated locally advanced disease(typically stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ) requiring multidisciplinary treatment plans with combinations of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Tumor staging is critical to decide therapeutic planning. Multiple challenges include accurate tumor localization with precise delineation of tumor volume, cervical lymph node staging, detection of distant metastasis as well as ruling out synchronous second primary tumors. Somepatients present with cervical lymph node metastasis without obvious primary tumors on clinical examination or conventional cross sectional imaging. Treatment planning includes surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or combinations that could significantly alter the anatomy and physiology of this complex head and neck region, making assessment of treatment response and detection of residual/ recurrent tumor very difficult by clinical evaluation and computed tomography(CT) or magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). 18F-2-fluoro-2-deoxyD-glucose positron emission tomography/CT(18F-FDG PET/CT) has been widely used to assess HNC for more than a decade with high diagnostic accuracy especially in detection of initial distant metastasis and evaluation of treatment response. There are some limitations that are unique to PET/CT including artifacts, lower soft tissue contrast and resolution as compared to MRI, false positivity in post-treatment phase due to inflammation and granulation tissues, etc. The aim of this article is to review the roles of PET/CT in both pre and post treatment management of HNSCC including its limitations that radiologists must know. | 4 | Prognostic value of perioperative leukocyte count in resectable gastric cancer显示文摘AIM: To investigate the prognostic significance of perioperative leukopenia in patients with resected gastric cancer.METHODS: A total of 614 eligible gastric cancer patients who underwent curative D2 gastrectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy were enrolled in this study. The relationship between pre- and postoperative hematologic parameters and overall survival was assessed statistically, adjusted for known prognostic factors.RESULTS: The mean white blood cell count(WBC) significantly decreased after surgery, and 107/614(17.4%) patients developed p-leukopenia, which was defined as a preoperative WBC ≥ 4.0 × 109/L and postoperative WBC < 4.0 × 109/L, with an absolute decrease ≥ 0.5 × 109/L. The neutrophil count decreased significantly more than the lymphocyte count. P-leukopenia significantly correlated with poor tumor differentiation and preoperative WBC. A higher preoperative WBC and p-leukopenia were independent negative prognostic factors for survival [hazard ratio(HR) = 1.602, 95% confidence interval(CI): 1.185-2.165; P = 0.002, and HR = 1.478, 95%CI: 1.149-1.902; P = 0.002, respectively] after adjusting for histology, Borrmann type, p TNM stage, vascular or neural invasion, gastrectomy method, resection margins, chemotherapy regimens, and preoperative WBC count. The patients with both higher preoperative WBC and p- leukopenia had a worse prognosis compared to those with lower baseline WBC and no p-leukopenia(27.5 mo vs 57.3 mo, P < 0.001). | 6 | Cytotoxic effect of interleukin-8 in retinal ganglion cells and its possible mechanisms显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effect of interleukin-8(IL-8) on neural retinal ganglion cells(RGCs) and whether it can be alleviated by G31P. METHODS: RGC-5 cells were exposed to IL-8 with or without its specific receptor antagonist G31P for 24h, and the cell viability was assessed by Cell Counting Kit 8(CCK-8). Apoptosis was measured by examining nuclear morphology and quantifying with flow cytometry. Reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(RT-qP CR) and Western blot were used to investigate the expression of apoptosis-related genes. RESULTS: CCK-8 assay showed that IL-8 significantly inhibits the viability of RGC-5 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Cell apoptosis assays exhibited higher apoptotic rate in IL-8 treatment group compared to control group. We further found that IL-8 could promote Bax and caspase-3 expressions, but decrease the level of Bcl-2 in the aspect of m RNA and protein.
