| 1 | Leaching kinetics of celestite in nitric acid solutions显示文摘In this study, strontium nitrate extraction from celestite in nitric acid solutions was investigated using the leaching method. The influences of acid concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, stirring speed, and reaction temperature on the leaching of strontium from celestite concentrate were studied. The results showed that the leaching rate increased with increasing acid concentration, stirring speed, and temperature and decreased with increasing solid-to-liquid ratio. The particle size was fixed in all of the dissolution experiments. The results showed that the stirring speed and the temperature were the most influential parameters with respect to the leaching process. The kinetic model best fit control by diffusion through the product layer. | 2 | Hypoxia and cytokines regulate carbonic anhydrase 9 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma cells in vitro显示文摘AIM: To study the expression of carbonic anhydrase(CA) 9 in human hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) cells.METHODS: We studied CA9 protein, CA9 m RNA and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha(HIF-1α) protein levels in Hep3 B cells exposed in different parallel approaches. In one of these approaches, HCC cells were exposed to extreme in vitro hypoxia(24 h 0.1% O2) without or with interleukin(IL)-1, IL-6, tumor necrosis factoralpha(TNF-α) and transforming growth factor-beta(TGF-β) stimulation for the same hypoxic exposure time or exposed to normoxic oxygenation conditions without or with cytokine stimulation.RESULTS: The tumour cell line analysed showed a strong hypoxic CA9 m RNA expression pattern in response to prolonged severe hypoxia with cell-line specific patterns and a marked induction of CA9 protein in response to severe hypoxia. These results were paralleled by the results for HIF-1α protein under identical oxygenation conditions with a similar expression tendency to that displayed during the CA9 protein expression experimental series. Continuous stimulation with the cytokines, IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α and TGF-β, under normoxic conditions significantly increased the carbonic anhydrase 9 expression level at both the protein and m RNA level, almost doubling the CA9 m RNA and CA9 and HIF-1α protein expression levels found under hypoxia. The findings from these experiments indicated that hypoxia is a positive regulator of CA9 expression in HCC, and the four signal transduction pathways, IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α and TGF-β, positively influence CA9 expression under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions.CONCLUSION: These findings may potentially be considered in the design of anti- cancer therapeutic approaches involving hypoxia-induced or cytokine stimulatory effects on expression. | 3 | Do medical students studying in the United Kingdom have an adequate factual knowledge of basic life support?显示文摘BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals have a duty to maintain basic life support(BLS) skills. This study aims to evaluate medical students' factual knowledge of BLS and the training they receive.METHODS: A cross-sectional, closed-response questionnaire was distributed to the fi rst-and fourth-year students studying at institutions in the United Kingdom. The paper questionnaire sought to quantify respondent's previous BLS training, factual knowledge of the BLS algorithm using five multiple choice questions(MCQs), and valuate their desire for further BLS training. Students received 1 point for each correctly identifi ed answer to the 5 MCQ's.RESULTS: A total of 3,732 complete responses were received from 21 medical schools. Eighty percent(n=2,999) of students completed a BLS course as part of their undergraduate medical studies. There was a signifi cant difference(P<0.001) in the percentage of the fourth-year students selecting the correct answer in all the MCQ's compared to the fi rst-year students except in identifyingthe correct depth of compressions required during CPR(P=0.095). Overall 10.3%(95% CI 9.9% to 10.7%) of respondents correctly identified the answer to 5 MCQ's on BLS: 9% of the first-year students(n=194) and 12% of the fourth-year students(n=190). On an institutional level the proportion of students answering all MCQ's correctly ranged from 2% to 54% at different universities. Eighty-one percent of students(n=3,031) wished for more BLS training in their curriculum.CONCLUSION: Factual knowledge of BLS is poor among medical students in the UK.
