| 1 | Pseudomonas fluorescens-like bacteria from the stomach:A microbiological and molecular study显示文摘AIM:To characterize oxidase-and urease-producing bacterial isolates,grown aerobically,that originated from antral biopsies of patients suffering from acid peptic diseases.METHODS:A total of 258 antral biopsy specimens were subjected to isolation of bacteria followed by tests for oxidase and urease production,acid tolerance and aerobic growth.The selected isolates were further characterized by molecular techniques viz.amplifications for 16S rRNA using universal eubacterial and HSP60 gene specific primers.The amplicons were subjected to restriction analysis and partial sequencing.A phylogenetic tree was generated using unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean(UPGMA) from evolutionary distance computed with bootstrap test of phylogeny.Assessment of acidity tolerance of bacteria isolated from antrum was performed using hydrochloric acid from 10-7 mol/L to 10-1 mol/L.RESULTS:Of the 258 antral biopsy specimens collected from patients,179(69.4%) were positive for urease production by rapid urease test and 31%(80/258) yielded typical Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori) after 5-7 d of incubation under a microaerophilic environment.A total of 240(93%) antral biopsies yielded homogeneous semi-translucent and small colonies after overnight incubation.The partial 16S rRNA sequences revealed that the isolates had 99% similarity with Pseudomonas species.A phylogenetic tree on the basis of 16S rRNA sequences denoted that JQ927226 and JQ927227 were likely to be related to Pseudomonas fluorescens(P.fluorescens).On the basis ofHSP60 sequences applied to the UPGMA phylogenetic tree,it was observed that isolated strains in an aerobic environment were likely to be P.fluorescens,and HSP60 sequences had more discriminatory potential rather than 16S rRNA sequences.Interestingly,this bacterium was acid tolerant for hours at low pH.Further,a total of 250(96.9%) genomic DNA samples of 258 biopsy specimens and DNA from 240 bacterial isolates were positive for the 613 bp amplicons by targeting P.fluorescens-specific conserved putative outer membrane protein gene sequences.CONCLUSION:This study indicates that bacterial isolates from antral biopsies grown aerobically were P.fluorescens,and thus acid-tolerant bacteria other than H.pylori can also colonize the stomach and may be implicated in pathogenesis/protection. | Saurabh Kumar Patel Chandra Bhan Pratap Ajay Kumar Verma Ashok Kumar Jain Vinod Kumar Dixit Gopal Nath | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,7: | 4 |
| 2 | Soil and water conservation measures improve soil carbon sequestration and soil quality under cashews显示文摘Land degradation is becoming a serious problem in the west coast region of India where one of the world's eight biodiversity hotspots,the‘Western Ghats’,is present.Poor land management practices and high rainfall have led to increasing problems associated with land degradation.A long-term(13-year)experiment was done to evaluate the impact of soil and water conservation measures on soil carbon sequestration and soil quality at three different depths under cashew nut cultivation on a 19%slope.Five soil and water conservation measures-continuous contour trenches,staggered contour trenches,halfmoon terraces,semi-elliptical trenches,and graded trenches all with vegetative barriers of Stylosanthes scabra and Vetiveria zizanoides and control were evaluated for their influence on soil properties,carbon sequestration,and soil quality under cashews.The soil and water conservation measures improved significantly the soil organic carbon,soil organic carbon stock,carbon sequestration rate and microbial activity compared to the control condition(without any measures).Among the measures tested,continuous contour trenches with vegetative barriers outperformed the others with respect to soil organic carbon stock,sequestration rate,and microbial activity.The lower metabolic quotient with the measures compared to the control indicated alleviation of environmental stress on microbes.Using principal component analysis and a correlation matrix,a minimum dataset was identified as the soil available nitrogen,bulk density,basal soil respiration,soil pH,acid phosphatase activity,and soil available boron and these were the most important soil properties controlling the soil quality.Four soil quality indices using two summation methods(additive and weighted)and two scoring methods(linear and non-linear)were developed using the minimum dataset.A linear weighted soil quality index was able to statistically differentiate the effect of soil and water conservation measures from that of the control.The highest value of the soil quality index of 0.98 was achieved with continuous contour trenches with a vegetative barrier.The results of the study indicate that soil and water conservation measures for cashews are a potential strategy to improve the soil carbon sequestration and soil quality along with improving crop productivity and reducing the erosion losses. | Gopal Ramdas Mahajan Bappa Das Sandrasekaran Manivannan Begur Lakshminarasimha Manjunath Ram Ratan Verma Sujeet Desai Rahul Mukund Kulkarni Ashish Marotrao Latare Reshma Sale Dayesh Murgaonkar Kiran Puna Patel Shaiesh Morajkar Ashwini Desai Natasha Barnes Heena Mulla | 2021 | International Journal of Sediment Research2021,36,2: | 4 |
| 3 | In-vitro scolicidal activity of Mallotus philippinensis (Lam.) Muell Arg. fruit glandular hair extract against hydatid cyst Echinococcus granulosus显示文摘Objective: To investigate new scolicidal agent from natural resources to cope with the side effects associated with synthetic drugs in Echinococcosis. Methods: The scolicidal potential of methanolic fruit powder extract (10 and 20 mg/mL) of Mallotus philippinensis ( M. philippinensis ) was investigated. Viability of protoscoleces was confirmed by trypan blue exclusion method, where mortality was observed at concentration of 10 and 20 mg/mL in 60 min treatment against Echinococcus granulosus ( E. granulosus ), under in-vitro conditions with reference to the known standard drug Praziquantel . Results: At concentration 10 and 20 mg/mL, the mortality rate was observed 97% and 99% respectively for 60 min treatment; while up to 93% mortality was observed with 20 mg/mL for only 10 min treatment. The concentration above 20 mg/mL for above 2 h showed 100% mortality, irrespective of further incubation. | 5 | Reconfigurable metasurface-based 1×2 waveguide switch显示文摘Reconfigurable nanophotonic components are essential elements in realizing complex and highly integrated photonic circuits.Here we report a novel concept for devices with functionality to dynamically control guided light in the near-visible spectral range,which is illustrated by a reconfigurable and non-volatile(1×2)switch using an ultracompact active metasurface.The switch is made of two sets of nanorod arrays of TiO_(2) and antimony trisulfide(Sb_(2)S_(3)),a low-loss phase-change material(PCM),patterned on a silicon nitride waveguide.The metasurface creates an effective multimode interferometer that forms an image of the input mode at the end of the stem waveguide and routes this image toward one of the output ports depending on the phase of PCM nanorods.Remarkably,our metasurface-based 1×2 switch enjoys an ultracompact coupling length of 5.5μm and a record high bandwidth(22.6 THz)compared to other PCM-based switches.Furthermore,our device exhibits low losses in the near-visible region(∼1 dB)and low cross talk(−11.24 dB)over a wide bandwidth(22.6 THz).Our pro-posed device paves the way toward realizing compact and efficient waveguide routers and switches for applications in quantum computing,neuromorphic photonic networking,and biomedical sensing and optogenetics. | AMGED ALQULIAH MOHAMED ELKABBASH JINLUO CHENG GOPAL VERMA CHAUDRY SAJED SARAJ WEI LI CHUNLEI GUO | 2021 | Photonics Research2021,9,10: | 1 |
| 6 | Lumped parameter analytic modeling and behavioral simulation of a 3-DOF MEMS gyro-accelerometer显示文摘A new analytical model of a 3-degree-of-freedom(3-DOF) gyro-accelerometer system consisting of a 1-DOF drive and 2-DOF sense modes is presented. The model constructs lumped differential equations associated with each DOF of the system by vector analysis. The coupled differential equations thus established are solved analytically for their responses in both the time and frequency domains. Considering these frequency response equations, novel device design concepts are derived by forcing the sense phase to zero, which leads to a certain relationship between the structural frequencies, thereby causing minimization of the damping effect on the performance of the system. Furthermore, the feasibility of the present gyro-accelerometer structure is studied using a unique discriminatory scheme for the detection of both gyro action and linear acceleration at their events. This scheme combines the formulated settled transient solution of the gyro-accelerometer with the processes of synchronous demodulation and filtration, which leads to the in-phase and quadrature components of the system's output signal. These two components can be utilized in the detection of angular motion and linear acceleration. | 11 | A versatile interferometric technique for probing the thermophysical properties of complex fluids显示文摘Laser-induced thermocapillary deformation of liquid surfaces has emerged as a promising tool to precisely characterize the thermophysical properties of pure fluids.However,challenges arise for nanofluid(NF)and soft biofluid systems where the direct interaction of the laser generates an intriguing interplay between heating,momentum,and scattering forces which can even damage soft biofluids.Here,we report a versatile,pump-probe-based,rapid,and non-contact interferometric technique that resolves interface dynamics of complex fluids with the precision of~1 nm in thick-film and 150 pm in thin-film regimes below the thermal limit without the use of lock-in or modulated beams.We characterize the thermophysical properties of complex NF in three exclusively different types of configurations.First,when the NF is heated from the bottom through an opaque substrate,we demonstrate that our methodology permits the measurement of thermophysical properties(viscosity,surface tension,and diffusivity)of complex NF and biofluids.Second,in a top illumination configuration,we show a precise characterization of NF by quantitively isolating the competing forces,taking advantage of the different time scales of these forces.Third,we show the measurement of NF confined in a metal cavity,in which the transient thermoelastic deformation of the metal surface provides the properties of the NF as well as thermo-mechanical properties of the metal.Our results reveal how the dissipative nature of the heatwave allows us to investigate thick-film dynamics in the thin-film regime,thereby suggesting a general approach for precision measurements of complex NFs,biofluids,and optofluidic devices. | Gopal Verma Gyanendra Yadav Chaudry Sajed Saraj Longnan Li Nenad Miljkovic Jean Pierre Delville Wei Li | 2022 | Light(Science & Applications)2022,11,5: | 0 |
| 12 | Laser-induced periodic surface structured electrodes with 45% energy saving in electrochemical fuel generation through field localization显示文摘Electrochemical oxidation/reduction of radicals is a green and environmentally friendly approach to generating fuels.These reactions,however,suffer from sluggish kinetics due to a low local concentration of radicals around the electrocatalyst.A large applied electrode potential can enhance the fuel generation efficiency via enhancing the radical concentration around the electrocatalyst sites,but this comes at the cost of electricity.Here,we report about a~45%saving in energy to achieve an electrochemical hydrogen generation rate of 3×10^(16) molecules cm^(–2)s^(–1)(current density:10 mA/cm^(2))through localized electric field-induced enhancement in the reagent concentration(LEFIRC)at laser-induced periodic surface structured(LIPSS)electrodes.The finite element model is used to simulate the spatial distribution of the electric field to understand the effects of LIPSS geometric parameters in field localization.When the LIPSS patterned electrodes are used as substrates to support Pt/C and RuO_(2) electrocatalysts,the η_(10) overpotentials for HER and OER are decreased by 40.4 and 25%,respectively.Moreover,the capability of the LIPSS-patterned electrodes to operate at significantly reduced energy is also demonstrated in a range of electrolytes,including alkaline,acidic,neutral,and seawater.Importantly,when two LIPSS patterned electrodes were assembled as the anode and cathode into a cell,it requires 330 mVs of lower electric potential with enhanced stability over a similar cell made of pristine electrodes to drive a current density of 10 mA/cm^(2).This work demonstrates a physical and versatile approach of electrode surface patterning to boost electrocatalytic fuel generation performance and can be applied to any metal and semiconductor catalysts for a range of electrochemical reactions. | Chaudry Sajed Saraj Subhash C.Singh Gopal Verma Rahul A Rajan Wei Li Chunlei Guo | 2022 | Opto-Electronic Advances2022,5,11: | 0 |
