1Rare etiology of mechanical intestinal obstruction: Abdominal cocoon syndrome显示文摘Abdominal cocoon syndrome is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction with unknown etiology. Diagnosis of this syndrome, which can be summarized as the small intestine being surrounded by a fibrous capsule not containing the mesothelium, is difficult in the preoperative period. A 47-year-old male patient was referred to the emergency department with complaints of abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting for two days. The abdominal computed tomography examination detected dilated small intestinal loops containing air-fluid levels clustered in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen and surrounded by a thick, saclike, contrast-enhanced membrane. During exploratory surgery, a capsular structure was identified in the upper left quadrant with a regular surface that was solid-fibrous in nature. Ab-dominal cocoon syndrome is a rarely seen condition, for which the preoperative diagnosis is difficult. 2Outcomes in spasticity after repetitive transcranial magnetic and transcranial direct current stimulations显示文摘Non-invasive brain stimulations mainly consist of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation exhibits satisfactory outcomes in improving multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy-induced spasticity. By contrast, transcranial direct current stimulation has only been studied in post-stroke spasticity. 3Non-invasive brain stimulation to promote motor and functional recovery following spinal cord injury显示文摘We conducted a systematic review of studies using non-invasive brain stimulation(NIBS: repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(r TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation(t DCS)) as a research and clinical tool aimed at improving motor and functional recovery or spasticity in patients following spinal cord injury(SCI) under the assumption that if the residual corticospinal circuits could be stimulated appropriately, the changes might be accompanied by functional recovery or an improvement in spasticity. 4Evaluation of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, macula and ganglion cell thickness in amblyopia using spectral optical coherence tomography显示文摘AIM:To investigate peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), macula and ganglion cell layer thicknesses (GCC) in amblyopic eyes with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS:Thirty six patients with a history of unilateral amblyopia and thirty two children who had emmetropia without amblyopia were included in this study. In this institutional study, 36 eyes of 36 patients with amblyopia (AE), 36 fellow eyes without amblyopia (FE), and 32 eyes of 32 normal subjects (NE) were included. RNFL, GCC and macular thickness measurements were performed with RS-3000 OCT Retina Scan (Nidek Inc CA. USA). RESULTS:The mean global thicknesses of the RNFL were 113.22 ±21.47, 111.57 ±18.25, 109.96 ±11.31μm in the AE, FE, and NE, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference for mean global RNFL thickness among the eyes (P =0.13). The mean thicknesses of the macula were 258.25±18.31, 258.75±19.54, 248.62±10.57μm in the AE, FE and NE, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference for thickness of macula among the eyes (P =0.06). The GCC was investigated into two parts:superior and inferior. The mean thicknesses of superior GCC were 102.57 ±13.32, 103.32 ±10.64, 100.52 ± 5.88μm in the AE, FE, and NE, respectively. The mean thicknesses of inferior GCC were 103.82 ±12.60, 107.82 ± 12.33, 105.86±10.79μm in the AE, FE and NE, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference for thickness of superior and inferior GCC between the eyes (P =0.63, P =0.46). ·CONCLUSION:The macular thicknesses of AE and FE were greater than the NE, although it was not statistically significant. 5Glutamine depletion induces murine neonatal melena with increased apoptosis of the intestinal epithelium显示文摘AIM:To investigate the possible biological outcome and effect of glutamine depletion in neonatal mice and rodent intestinal epithelial cells.METHODS:We developed three kinds of artificial milk with different amounts of glutamine;Complete amino acid milk (CAM),which is based on maternal mouse milk,glutamine-depleted milk (GDM),and glutaminerich milk (GRM).GRM contains three-fold more glutamine than CAM.Eighty-seven newborn mice were divided into three groups and were fed with either of CAM,GDM,or GRM via a recently improved nipple-bottle system for seven days.After the feeding period,the mice were subjected to macroscopic and microscopic observations by immunohistochemistry for 5-bromo-2'deoxyuridine (BrdU) and Ki-67 as markers of cell proliferation,and for cleaved-caspase-3 as a marker of apoptosis.Moreover,IEC6 rat intestinal epithelial cells were cultured in different concentrations of glutamine and were subject to a 4-[3-(4-iodophenyl)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)2H-5-tetrazolio]-1,3-benzene disulfonate cell proliferation assay,flow cytometry,and western blotting to examine the biological effect of glutamine on cell growth and apoptosis.RESULTS:During the feeding period,we found colonic hemorrhage in six of 28 GDM-fed mice (21.4%),but not in the GRM-fed mice,with no differences in body weight gain between each group.Microscopic examination showed destruction of microvilli and the disappearance of glycocalyx of the intestinal wall in the colon epithelial tissues taken from GDM-fed mice.Intake of GDM reduced BrdU incorporation (the average percentage of BrdU-positive staining;GRM:13.8%,CAM:10.7%,GDM:1.14%,GRM vs GDM:P < 0.001,CAM vs GDM:P < 0.001) and Ki-67 labeling index (the average percentage of Ki67-positive staining;GRM:24.5%,CAM:22.4% GDM:19.4%,GRM vs GDM:P=0.001,CAM vs GDM:P =0.049),suggesting that glutamine depletion inhibited cell proliferation of intestinal epithelial cells.Glutamine deprivation further caused the deformation of the nuclear membrane and the plasma membrane,accompanied by chromatin degeneration and an absence of fat droplets from the colonic epithelia,indicating that the cells underwent apoptosis.Moreover,immunohistochemical analysis revealed the appearance of cleaved caspase-3 in colonic epithelial cells of GDM-fed mice.Finally,when IEC6 rat intestinal epithelial cells were cultured without glutamine,cell proliferation was significantly suppressed after 24 h (relative cell growth;4 mmol/L:100.0% ± 36.1%,0 mmol/L:25.3% ± 25.0%,P < 0.05),with severe cellular damage.The cells underwent apoptosis,accompanied by increased cell population in sub-G0 phase (4 mmol/L:1.68%,0.4 mmol/L:1.35%,0 mmol/L:5.21%),where dying cells are supposed to accumulate.CONCLUSION:Glutamine is an important alimentary component for the maintenance of intestinal mucosa.Glutamine deprivation can cause instability of the intestinal epithelial alignment by increased apoptosis.Takayuki Motoki Yoshio Naomoto Junji Hoshiba Yasuhiro Shirakawa Tomoki Yamatsuji Junji Matsuoka Munenori Takaoka Yasuko Tomono Yasuhiro Fujiwara Hiroshi Tsuchita Mehmet Gunduz Hitoshi Nagatsuka Noriaki Tanaka Toshiyoshi Fujiwara 2011World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,6:4
6Clustering Seismic Activities Using Linear and Nonlinear Discriminant Analysis显示文摘Identification and classification of different seismo-tectonic events with similar characteristics in a region of interest is one of the most important subjects in seismic hazard studies.In this study,linear and nonlinear discriminant analyses have been applied to classify seismic events in the vicinity of Istanbul.The vertical components of the digital velocity seismograms are used for seismic events with magnitude(Md)between 1.8 and 3.0 that occurred between 2001 and 2004.Two,time dependent parameters,complexity and S/P peak amplitude ratio are selected as predictands.Linear,quadratic,diaglinear and diagquadratic discriminant functions are investigated.Accuracy of methods with an additional adjusted quadratic models are 96.6%,96.6%,95.5%,96.6%,and 97.6%,respectively with a various misclassified rate for each class.The performances of models are justified with cross validation and resubstitution error.Although all models remarkably well performed,adjusted quadratic function achieved the best success rate with just 4 misclassified events out of 179,even better compared to complex methods such as,self organizing method,k-means,Gaussion mixture models that applied to same dataset in literature.H Serdar Kuyuk Eray Yildirim Emrah Dogan Gunduz Horasan 2014Journal of Earth Science2014,25,1:4

9Hepatocellular carcinoma xenograft supports HCV replication:A mouse model for evaluating antivirals显示文摘AIM: To develop a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) xenograft model for studying hepatitis C virus (HCV) replication in a mice, and antiviral treatment.METHODS: We developed a stable S3-green fluorescence protein (GFP) cell line that replicated the GFP-tagged HCV sub-genomic RNA derived from a highly efficient JFH1 virus. S3-GFP replicon cell line was injected subcutaneously into γ-irradiated SCID mice. We showed that the S3-GFP replicon cell line formed human HCC xenografts in SCID mice. Cells were isolated from subcutaneous tumors and then serially passaged multiple times in SCID mice by culturing in growth medium supplemented with G-418. The mouse-adapted S3-GFP replicon cells were implanted subcutaneously and also into the liver of SCID mice via intrasplenic infusion to study the replication of HCV in the HCC xenografts. The tumor model was validated for antiviral testing after intraperitoneal injection of interferon-α (IFN-α). RESULTS: A highly tumorigenic S3-GFP replicon cell line was developed that formed subcutaneous tumors within 2 wk and diffuse liver metastasis within 4 wk in SCID mice. Replication of HCV in the subcutaneous and liver tumors was confirmed by cell colony assay, detection of the viral RNA by ribonuclease protection assay and real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. High-level replication of HCV sub-genomic RNA in the tumor could be visualized by GFP expression using fluorescence microscopy. IFN-α cleared HCV RNA replication in the subcutaneous tumors within 2 wk and 4 wk in the liver tumor model. CONCLUSION: A non-infectious mouse model allows us to study replication of HCV in subcutaneous and metastatic liver tumors. 10An efficient stock market prediction model using hybrid feature reduction method based on variational autoencoders and recursive feature elimination显示文摘In this study,the hourly directions of eight banking stocks in Borsa Istanbul were predicted using linear-based,deep-learning(LSTM)and ensemble learning(Light-GBM)models.These models were trained with four different feature sets and their performances were evaluated in terms of accuracy and F-measure metrics.While the first experiments directly used the own stock features as the model inputs,the second experiments utilized reduced stock features through Variational AutoEncoders(VAE).In the last experiments,in order to grasp the effects of the other banking stocks on individual stock performance,the features belonging to other stocks were also given as inputs to our models.While combining other stock features was done for both own(named as allstock_own)and VAE-reduced(named as allstock_VAE)stock features,the expanded dimensions of the feature sets were reduced by Recursive Feature Elimination.As the highest success rate increased up to 0.685 with allstock_own and LSTM with attention model,the combination of allstock_VAE and LSTM with the attention model obtained an accuracy rate of 0.675.Although the classification results achieved with both feature types was close,allstock_VAE achieved these results using nearly 16.67%less features compared to allstock_own.When all experimental results were examined,it was found out that the models trained with allstock_own and allstock_VAE achieved higher accuracy rates than those using individual stock features.It was also concluded that the results obtained with the VAE-reduced stock features were similar to those obtained by own stock features.Hakan Gunduz 2021Financial Innovation2021,7,1:2
11Factors affecting recurrence after surgical treatment in cases with ocular surface squamous neoplasia显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the risk factors leading to recurrence in patients with ocular surface squamous neoplasia(OSSN)METHODS: The records of 112 patients with OSSN who underwent treatment and follow-up between February 1999 and August 2018 were reviewed retrospectively.RESULTS: Totally 67 patients(59.8%) were male and 45 patients(40.2%) were female. The mean age at presentation was 63.7 y(range 22-87 y). Partial lamellar scleroconjunctivectomy(PLSC) was performed in 105(93.7%) cases and enucleation was performed in 7(6.3%) cases due to bulbus invasion as the first step treatment. Treatments used in addition to PLSC included cryotherapy in 78 eyes(74.3%), alcohol epitheliectomy in 57 eyes(54.3%) for presence of corneal involvement, and amniotic membrane transplantation in 17 eyes(16.2%) for ocular surface reconstruction. Topical mitomycin C was used in 10 patients(9.5%) and strontium-90(Str-90) treatment in 4(3.8%) patients because surgical margins were tumor positive at the histopathological examination. Postoperative histopathologic diagnoses were squamous cell carcinoma(52 cases), carcinoma in situ(44 cases), moderate conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia(11 cases), and mild conjunctiva intraepithelial neoplasia(5 cases). At a mean follow-up of 20.1 mo, tumor recurrence was observed in 21(18.8%) cases. The rate of recurrence was found to be lower in cases that underwent supplemental cryotherapy compared to those that did not(P<0.001). There was no metastasis in any case.
