| 1 | Current and future predicting potential areas of Oxytenanthera abyssinica(A.Richard)using MaxEnt model under climate change in Northern Ethiopia显示文摘Introduction:Climate change will either improve,reduce,or shift its appropriate climatic habitat of a particular species,which could result in shifts from its geographical range.Predicting the potential distribution through MaxEnt modeling has been developed as an appropriate tool for assessing habitat distribution and resource conservation to protect bamboo species.Methods:Our objective is to model the current and future distribution of Oxytenanthera abyssinica(A.Richard)based on three representative concentration pathways(RCP)(RCP2.6,RCP4.5,and RCP8.5)for 2050s and 2070s using a maximum entropy model(MaxEnt)in Northern Ethiopia.For modeling procedure,77 occurrence records and 11 variables were retained to simulate the current and future distributions of Oxytenanthera abyssinica in Northern Ethiopia.To evaluate the performance of the model,the area under the receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve(AUC)was used.Results:All of the AUCs(area under curves)were greater than 0.900,thereby placing these models in the“excellent”category.The jackknife test also showed that precipitation of the coldest quarter(Bio19)and precipitation of the warmest quarter(Bio18)contributed 66.8%and 54.7%to the model.From the area of current distribution,1367.51 km2(2.52%),7226.28 km2(13.29%),and 5377.26 km2(9.89%)of the study area were recognized as high,good,and moderate potential habitats of Oxytenanthera abyssinica in Northern Ethiopia,and the high potential area was mainly concentrated in Tanqua Abergele(0.70%),Kola Temben(0.65%),Tselemti(0.60%),and Tsegede(0.31%).Kafta Humera was also the largest good potential area,which accounts for 2.75%.Compared to the current distribution,the total area of the high potential regions and good potential regions for Oxytenanthera abyssinica under the three RCPs(RCP2.6,RCP4.5,and RCP8.5)would increase in the 2050s and 2070s.However,the total area of the least potential regions under the three RCPs(RCP2.6,RCP4.5,and RCP8.5)in 2050s and 2070s would decrease.Conclusion:This study can provide vital information for the protection,management,and sustainable use of Oxytenanthera abyssinica,the resource to address the global climate challenges. | Yikunoamlak Gebrewahid Selemawi Abrehe Esayas Meresa Gebru Eyasu Kiros Abay Gebrehiwot Gebreab Kiros Kidanemariam Gezu Adissu Gebrekidan Abreha Girmay Darcha | 2020 | Ecological Processes2020,9,1: | 4 |
| 2 | Climate forcing of tree growth in dry Afromontane forest fragments of Northern Ethiopia:evidence from multi-species responses显示文摘Background: Climate-induced challenge remains a growing concern in the dry tropics, threatening carbon sink potential of tropical dry forests. Hence, understanding their responses to the changing climate is of high priority to facilitate sustainable management of the remnant dry forests. In this study, we examined the long-term climate-growth relations of main tree species in the remnant dry Afromontane forests in northern Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to assess the dendrochronological potential of selected dry Afromontane tree species and to study the influence of climatic variables (temperature and rainfall) on radial growth. It was hypothesized that there are potential tree species with discernible annual growth rings owing to the uni-modality of rainfall in the region. Ring width measurements were based on increment core samples and stem discs collected from a total of 106 trees belonging to three tree species (Juniperus procera, Olea europaea p. cuspidate and Podocarpus falcatus). Thesubsp. collected samples were prepared, crossdated, and analyzed using standard dendrochronological methods. The formation of annual growth rings of the study species was verified based on successful crossdatability and by correlating tree-ring widths with rainfall. Results: The results showed that all the sampled tree species form distinct growth boundaries though differences in the distinctiveness were observed among the species. Positive and significant correlations were found between the tree-ring widths and rainfall, implying that rainfall plays a vital role in determining tree growth in the region. The study confirmed the formation of annual growth rings through successful crossdating, thus highlighted the potential applicability of dendroclimatic studies in the region. Conclusions: Overall, the results proved the strong linkage between tree-ring chronologies and climate variability in the study region, which further strengthens the potential of dendrochronological studies developing in Ethiopia, and also has great implications for further paleo-climatic reconstructions and in the restoration of degraded lands. | 4 | High helminthic co-infection in tuberculosis patients with undernutritional status in northeastern Ethiopia显示文摘Background:Tuberculosis and parasitosis are the widely distributed diseases in Ethiopia with the leading cause of mortality and morbidity,respectively.There has been no information on the status of co-infections of tuberculosis and parasitosis in Oromia Zone of Amhara Region and South Wollo,Ethiopia.Hence,this study primarily focuses on determining the status of tuberculosis and parasitosis co-infections and associated factors.Methods:The study was conducted in Oromia Special Zone of the Amhara Regional State and South Wollo Zone,northeastern Ethiopia from April 2015 to January 2017.Tuberculosis cases confirmed by health personnel at the health institutions were the source of the study sample.In a cross-sectional study 384 smear positive pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis cases were recruited.Faecal specimens provided by the study participants were examined for parasitic co-infections using direct saline microscopic test,Kato-Katz and concentration techniques.Nutritional status was determined using body mass index and mid-upper arm circumferences.Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods and Pearson chi-square.Results:Tuberculosis and parasitosis co-infection prevalence was 10.8%,and the proportion of intestinal helminths accounted for 9.7%while intestinal protozoa accounted for 1.9%.Cases with single parasitic infection was 89.3%among co-infected individuals.Co-infection of both disease was not significantly associated with gender and age(P>0.05).The prevalence of undernutrition was 58.6%as determined using body mass index and 73.0%as determined using mid-upper arm circumference with no significant association with gender.Among all forms of tuberculosis cases(384)screened for the study,the bacterial positivity was relatively more common in males(55.5%)than females(44.5%).Tuberculosis lymphadenitis was found to be the most prevalent(85.9%)form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis with cervical adenopathy(75.3%)being the commonly existing disease.Conclusions:The rate of helminthic co-infection is predominantly high than that of intestinal protozoa.Single parasitic co-infection was more common than double or multiple co-infections.Both body mass index and midupper arm circumference anthropometric parameters revealed greater risk of undernutrition in tuberculosis patients.Thus,screening and prompt treatment of parasites in tuberculosis patients and a support of nutritional supplementation for malnourished tuberculosis patients should be further studied which might enhance the disease treatment and minimize the risk of its complexity. | Fikru Gashaw Samuel Bekele Yalemtsehay Mekonnen Girmay Medhin Gobena Ameni Berhanu Erko | 2019 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2019,8,5: | 1 |

| 15 | Ecological and floristic study of Hirmi woodland vegetation in Tigray Region,Northern Ethiopia显示文摘The dryland area in Ethiopia covers a substantial region endowed with diverse plant resources.However,the landmass has received less attention even if it has high ecological,environmental,and economic uses.The present study was conducted in Hirmi woodland vegetation,which is one of the dryland areas in Ethiopia,with the objective of investigating the floristic composition,plant community types,vegetation structure,communityenvironment relations and its regeneration status.Vegetation and environmental data were collected from 80 sampling plots with a size of 25 m×25 m designated as the main plots.Diameter at breast height(DBH),height,basal area,density,vertical structure,importance value index(IVI),and frequency were computed.Species diversity and evenness were analyzed using Shannon diversity and evenness indices.The plant community types and vegetation-environment relationships were analyzed using classification and ordination tools,respectively.A total of 171 vascular plant species belonging to 135 genera and 56 families were recorded.About 5.3%of the species were endemic and near-endemic to Ethiopia.The highest number of species was recorded in families Fabaceae(16.4%)and Poaceae(11.7%)followed by Asteraceae(7.0%),Combretaceae,Lamiaceae,and Moraceae(3.5%each).Five plant communities were identified.According to the results from ordination analysis,the floristic composition of these plant communities was significantly affected by altitude,slope,sand,silt,soil organic matter,total nitrogen,and disturbance.The vegetation structure reveals that a large number of individual species was categorized in the lower DBH,frequency,and height classes.The highest Shannon diversity index and evenness values of the study area were 4.21 and 0.95,respectively.Anogeissus leiocarpa,Combretum hartmannianum,Ziziphus mucronata,Terminalia macroptera,and Acacia polyacantha were the species with high IVI.Some endemic plants were in the IUCN red list categories of Ethiopia and Eritrea.The overall regeneration status of the study area was poor because of anthropogenic disturbances and grazing pressures.Although the study area is endowed with high plant species diversity including endemism,it is under poor regeneration status due to various disturbances.To overcome this challenge,integrated management measures including monitoring and application of restoration techniques by taking into consideration the significant environmental factors associated with species diversity as well as observed regeneration status and IUCN threat level of the species are highly recommended. | Mehari Girmay Tamrat Bekele Sebsebe Demissew Ermias Lulekal | 2020 | Ecological Processes2020,9,1: | 1 |
