1A preliminary study of the failure mechanisms of cascading landslide dams显示文摘Landslide dams commonly form when mass earth or rock movements reach a river channel and cause a complete or partial blockage of the channel.Intense rainfalls can induce upstream flows along a sloping channel that significantly affect downstream landslide dams.If a series of landslide dams are collapsed by incoming mountain torrents(induced by intense rainfall),large debris flows can form in a very short period.Furthermore, the failure of these dams can amplify the magnitude and scale of debris flows in the flow direction. The catastrophic debris flows that occurred in Zhouqu County,China on 8 August 2010 were caused by intense rainfall and the upstream cascading failure of landslide dams along the gullies.Incorporating the role of outburst floods associated with the complete or partial failure of landslide dams is an interesting problem usually beyond the scope of analysis because of the inherent modeling complexity. To understand the cascading failure modes of a series of landslide dams, and the dynamic effect these failures have on the enlargement of debris flow scales, experimental tests are conducted in sloping channels mimicking field conditions, with the modeled landslide dams distributed along a sloping channel and crushed by different upstream flows. The failure modes of three different cascades of landslide dams fully or partially blocking a channel river are parametrically studied. This study illustrates that upstream flows can induce a cascading failure of the landslide dams along a channel.Overtopping is the primary failure mechanism, while piping and erosion can also induce failures for different constructed landslide dams.A cascading failure of landslide dams causes a gradually increasing flow velocity and discharge of the front flow, resulting in an increase in both diameter and percentage of the entrained coarse particles.Furthermore, large landslide blockages can act to enhance the efficiency of river incision,or conversely to induce aggradation of fluvial sediments, depending on the blockage factor of the landslide dams and upstream discharge.Gordon G.D Peng Cui Xinghua Zhu Jinbo Tang Huayong Chen Qicheng Sun 2015International Journal of Sediment Research2015,30,3:8
2Compression characteristics of saturated re-compacted glacial tills in Tianmo Gully of Tibet, China显示文摘Glacial tills are highly compressible soils composed of loosely cemented sandy silt particles.Their role, for instance,as initial filler materials in geo-technical projects along temperate glacier regions warrant a systematic evaluation of their compressive characteristics. As such,we carry out a series of onedimensional compression tests on re-compacted glacial till samples obtained from Tianmo Gully,Tibet, with the aims of evaluating their compressive behavior under controlled initial stress conditions. The yield stress was determined from the void ratio versus consolidation pressure(e-log)planes.Its compression and swelling behaviors were observed during the primary and secondary compressions of the consolidation tests. From the compression curves,a correlation can be found between the consolidation stress and the void index. In addition,we find that the compression curves of glacial tills collapse into a single curve when normalized by the compression index. The experimental results in this study provide a basic understanding of the compression characteristics of the glacial tills in Tibet,China.CHEN Lei-lei ZHOU Gordon G.D MU Qing-yi CUI Kahlil Fredrick SONG Dong-ri 2019Journal of Mountain Science2019,16,7:3
3Debris flow impact on flexible barrier: effects of debrisbarrier stiffness and flow aspect ratio显示文摘Conventionally, flexible barriers are rated based on their ability to resist a free-falling boulder with a particular input energy. However, there is still no well-accepted approach for evaluating performance of flexible barrier under debris flow impact. In this study,a large-nonlinear finite-element model was used to back-analyze centrifuge tests to discern the effects of impact material type, barrier stiffness, and flow aspect ratio(flow height to flow length)on the reaction force between the impacting medium and flexible barrier. Results show that,in contrast to flexible barriers for resisting rockfall, the normal impact force induced by the highly frictional and viscous debris is insensitive to barrier stiffness. This is because the elongated distributions of kinetic energy are mainly dissipated by the internal and boundary shearing, and only a small portion is forwarded to the barrier.Furthermore,a new stiffness number is proposed to characterize the equivalent stiffness between a debris flow or a boulder, and a flexible barrier.Under the circumstance of an extremely elongated debris flow event,i.e.,low aspect ratio, the load on a barrier is dominated by the static component and thus not sensitive to the barrier stiffness.SONG Dong-ri ZHOU Gordon G.D CHOI Clarence Edward ZHENG Yun 2019Journal of Mountain Science2019,16,7:1
