| 1 | Changes in reproductive investment with altitude in an alpine plant显示文摘Aims In perennial species,the allocation of resources to reproduction results in a reduction of allocation to vegetative growth and,therefore,impacts future reproductive success.As a consequence,variation in this trade-off is among the most important driving forces in the life-history evolution of perennial plants and can lead to locally adapted genotypes.In addition to genetic variation,phenotypic plasticity might also contribute to local adaptation of plants to local conditions by mediating changes in reproductive allocation.Knowledge on the importance of genetic and environmental effects on the tradeoff between reproduction and vegetative growth is therefore essential to understand how plants may respond to environmental changes.Methods We conducted a transplant experiment along an altitudinal gradient from 425to1921 min the frontrange of the Western Alps of Switzerland to assess the influence of both altitudinal origin of populations and altitude of growing site on growth,reproductive investment and local adaptation in Poa alpina.Important findings In our study,the investment in reproduction increased with plant size.Plant growth and the relative importance of reproductive investment decreased in populations originating from higher altitudes compared to populations originating from lower altitudes.The changes in reproductive investment were mainly explained by differences in plant size.In contrast to genetic effects,phenotypic plasticity of all traits measured was low and not related to altitude.As a result,the population from the lowest altitude of origin performed best at all sites.Our results indicate that in P.alpina genetic differences in growth and reproductive investment are related to local conditions affecting growth,i.e.interspecific competition and soil moisture content. | Yann Hautier Christophe F.Randin Jurg Stocklin Antoine Guisan | 2009 | Journal of Plant Ecology2009,2,3: | 17 |
| 2 | Effective mass and Fermi surface complexity factor from ab initio band structure calculations显示文摘The effective mass is a convenient descriptor of the electronic band structure used to characterize the density of states and electron transport based on a free electron model.While effective mass is an excellent first-order descriptor in real systems,the exact value can have several definitions,each of which describe a different aspect of electron transport.Here we use Boltzmann transport calculations applied to ab initio band structures to extract a density-of-states effective mass from the Seebeck Coefficient and an inertial mass from the electrical conductivity to characterize the band structure irrespective of the exact scattering mechanism.We identify a Fermi Surface Complexity Factor:N_(v)^(*)K^(*) from the ratio of these two masses,which in simple cases depends on the number of Fermi surface pockets eN_(v)^(*) T and their anisotropy K^(*),both of which are beneficial to high thermoelectric performance as exemplified by the high values found in PbTe.The Fermi Surface Complexity factor can be used in high-throughput search of promising thermoelectric materials. | Zachary M.Gibbs Francesco Ricci Guodong Li Hong Zhu Kristin Persson Gerbrand Ceder Geoffroy Hautier Anubhav Jain G.Jeffrey Snyder | 2017 | npj Computational Materials2017,,1: | 11 |

| 4 | Materials property prediction for limited datasets enabled by feature selection and joint learning with MODNet显示文摘In order to make accurate predictions of material properties,current machine-learning approaches generally require large amounts of data,which are often not available in practice.In this work,MODNet,an all-round framework,is presented which relies on a feedforward neural network,the selection of physically meaningful features,and when applicable,joint-learning.Next to being faster in terms of training time,this approach is shown to outperform current graph-network models on small datasets.In particular,the vibrational entropy at 305 K of crystals is predicted with a mean absolute test error of 0.009 meV/K/atom(four times lower than previous studies).Furthermore,joint learning reduces the test error compared to single-target learning and enables the prediction of multiple properties at once,such as temperature functions.Finally,the selection algorithm highlights the most important features and thus helps to understand the underlying physics. | Pierre-Paul De Breuck Geoffroy Hautier Gian-Marco Rignanese | 2021 | npj Computational Materials2021,,1: | 5 |
