1Total pancreatectomy and islet autotransplantation: A decade nationwide analysis显示文摘AIM: To investigate outcomes and predictors of inhospital morbidity and mortality after total pancreatectomy(TP) and islet autotransplantation. METHODS: The nationwide inpatient sample(NIS) database was used to identify patients who underwent TP and islet autotransplantation(IAT) between 2002-2012 in the United States. Variables of interest were inherent variables of NIS database which included demographic data(age, sex, and race), comorbidities(such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and deficiency anemia), and admission type(elective vs nonelective). The primary endpoints were mortality and postoperative complications according to the ICD-9 diagnosis codes which were reported as the second to 25 th diagnosis of patients in the database. Risk adjusted analysis was performed to investigate morbidity predictors. Multivariate regression analysis was used to identify predictors of in-hospital morbidity.RESULTS: We evaluated a total of 923 patients who underwent IAT after pancreatectomy during 2002-2012. Among them, there were 754 patients who had TP + IAT. The most common indication ofsurgery was chronic pancreatitis(86%) followed by acute pancreatitis(12%). The number of patients undergoing TP + IAT annually significantly increased during the 11 years of study from 53 cases in 2002 to 155 cases in 2012. Overall mortality and morbidity of patients were 0% and 57.8 %, respectively. Postsurgical hypoinsulinemia was reported in 42.3% of patients, indicating that 57.7% of patients were insulin independent during hospitalization. Predictors of inhospital morbidity were obesity [adjusted odds ratio(AOR): 3.02, P = 0.01], fluid and electrolyte disorders(AOR: 2.71, P < 0.01), alcohol abuse(AOR: 2.63, P < 0.01), and weight loss(AOR: 2.43, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: TP + IAT is a safe procedure with no mortality, acceptable morbidity, and achieved high rate of early insulin independence. 3LATERAL ROOTLESS2, a Cyclophilin Protein, Regulates Lateral Root Initiation and Auxin Signaling Pathway in Rice显示文摘Dear Editor, Cyclophilins (CYP) are a class of highly conserved peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerases (PPlases) that play important roles in various biological processes in eukaryotes (reviewed in Romano et al.(2004)).In higher plants,a conserved single domain cyclophilin has been identified as a novel component of the auxin signaling pathway by analyzing the tomato diageotropica (dgt) mutant (Ivanchenko et al.,2006;Oh et al.,2006).The dgt mutant displays a lateral-rootless and auxin-resistant phenotype (Ivanchenko et al.,2006).Further studies revealed that mutations in the DGT-like genes of Physcomitrella patens also exhibited an auxin-resistant phenotype,suggesting a conserved role of DGT-like proteins in auxin signaling.Moreover,mutation in PpDGT gene suppresses the auxin hypersensitive phenotype conferred by the overexpression of the auxin receptor gene PpAFB2,indicating that PpDGT acts downstream of PpAFB2 (Lavy et al.,2012).Huakun Zheng Suiuan Li Bo Ren Jian Zhang Masahiko Ichii Shin Taketa Yuezhi Tao Jianru Zuo Hua Wang 2013Molecular Plant2013,6,5:4
4Treatment with dimethyl fumarate ameliorates liver ischemia/reperfusion injury显示文摘AIM To investigate the hypothesis that treatment with dimethyl fumarate(D MF) mayame liorate liver ischemia/reperfusion injury(I/RI).METHODS Rats were divided into 3 groups: sham, control(CTL), and DMF. DMF(25 mg/kg, twice/d) was orally administered for 2 d before the procedure. The CTL and DMF rats were subjected to ischemia for 1 h and reperfusion for 2 h. The serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and malondialdehyde(MDA) levels, adenosine triphosphate(ATP), NO × metabolites, anti-oxidant enzyme expression level, antiinflammatory effect, and anti-apoptotic effect were determined.RESULTS Histological tissue damage was significantly reduced in the DMF group(Suzuki scores: sham: 0 ± 0; CTL: 9.3± 0.5; DMF: 2.5 ± 1.2; sham vs CTL, P < 0.0001; CTL vs DMF, P < 0.0001). This effect was associated with significantly lower serum ALT(DMF 5026 ± 2305 U/L vs CTL 10592 ± 1152 U/L, P = 0.04) and MDA(DMF 18.2 ± 1.4 μmol/L vs CTL 26.0 ± 1.0 μmol/L, P = 0.0009). DMF effectively improved the ATP content(DMF 20.3 ± 0.4 nmol/mg vs CTL 18.3 ± 0.6 nmol/mg, P = 0.02), myeloperoxidase activity(DMF 7.8 ± 0.4 m U/m L vs CTL 6.0 ± 0.5 m U/m L, P = 0.01) and level of endothelial nitric oxide synthase expression(DMF 0.38 ± 0.05-fold vs 0.17 ± 0.06-fold, P = 0.02). The higher expression levels of anti-oxidant enzymes(catalase and glutamatecysteine ligase modifier subunit and lower levels of key inflammatory mediators(nuclear factor-kappa B and cyclooxygenase-2 were confirmed in the DMF group.CONCLUSION DMF improved the liver function and the anti-oxidant and inflammation status following I/RI. 5A trial of simple and easy health monitoring for power poles by using ‘ipod’显示文摘At present,the regular inspection of power poles is just a visual inspection based on the inspector’s experience.Thus,overlook of the deteriorated poles can come off.In order to avoid an accident due to the overlook of the deteriorated poles,the authors propose a simple and easy health monitoring method for power poles using‘i Pod’.Since the applicability of‘i Pod’as a vibration sensor in this purpose was not clear,it was examined in the following procedure.First,the authors proposed a tool to fix the‘i Pod’to a power pole,and the performance of‘i Pod’as a vibration measurement device was compared with a conventional acceleration sensor.As a result,it was confirmed that‘i Pod’could give almost the same response with the conventional sensor in terms of the observed predominant frequency.Next,vibration measurements were conducted at power poles in a field.As a result,the observed predominant frequency corresponded to the calculated 2nd natural frequency of power poles.Although some power poles were supported by some additional wires from the ground,the measurements were successful at almost all the sites.Hence,the authors confirmed that the‘i Pod’based health monitoring is possible.ORAI Naoki ICHII Koji ISHII Shiho 2015Science China(Technological Sciences)2015,58,4:2
6Development and Application of SCAR Markers for Discriminating Cytoplasmic Male Sterile Lines from Their Cognate Maintainer Lines in Indica Rice显示文摘The DNA fragments about 1 600 bp were amplified using random amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD) primer OPA12 with the templates of mitochondrial DNA of Zhenshan 97A and Zhenshan 97B,and were sequenced.The nucleotide sequences and lengths of the fragments from Zhenshan 97A and Zhenshan 97B showed no difference.The precise length of the fragment was 1 588 bp.Sequence characterized amplification region (SCAR) primers were then developed to discriminate the cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines and their maintainer lines.A specific 1 588 bp fragment could be amplified with SCAR primers,CHI19F2/CHI19R2 and CHI20F3/CHI23R3,in the mitochondrial DNA of Zhenshan 97A,but not Zhenshan 97B.Furthermore,the specific fragment could be also amplified from the total DNA from green leaf tissues of Zhenshan 97A with SCAR primers,but not Zhenshan 97B.With the corresponding primers,the specific fragment could also be amplified from the total DNA of green leaves of other two CMS lines with wild abortive type cytoplasm (CMS-WA),namely Zhenpin A and Tianfeng A,but not in their maintainer lines.Moreover,using total DNA as template,each of the four pairs of SCAR primers could also be used to amplify the 1 588 bp fragment in CMS-ID (Indonesia paddy type) line Ⅱ-32A,but not in II-32B,and the specific fragment was amplified from the DNA of both F1 and F2 seedlings of Shanyou 63.The results of detecting the genetic purity of a man-made mixture of the seeds of Zhenshan 97A using CHI20F3/CHI23R3 were completely consistent with the phenotypes.Taken together,these results indicated that the specific 1 588 bp-fragment amplified by CHI20F3/CHI23R3 was the unique amplification products of CMS mitochondrial DNA,and could be used to distinguish CMS-WA and CMS-ID lines from their corresponding maintainer lines at the seedling stage.LU Chao LIU Jian JIANG Jian-hua Caleb Manamik BRERIA TAN He-lin Masahiko ICHII HONG De-lin 2013Rice science2013,20,3:2
7Early B lymphocyte development: Similarities and differences in human and mouse显示文摘B lymphocytes differentiate from hematopoietic stem cells through a series of distinct stages. Early B cell development proceeds in bone marrow until immature B cells migrate out to secondary lymphoid tissues, such as a spleen and lymph nodes, after completion of immunoglobulin heavy and light chain rearrangement. Although the information about the regulation by numerous factors, including signaling molecules, transcription factors, epigenetic changes and the microenvironment, could provide the clinical application, our knowledge on human B lymphopoiesis is limited. However, with great methodological advances, significant progress for understanding B lymphopoiesis both in human and mouse has been made.
