2Differences in pectoral fin spine morphology between vocal and silent clades of catfishes (Order Siluriformes): Ecomorphological implications显示文摘Stridulatory sound-producing behavior is widespread across catfish families, but some are silent. To understand why,we compared spine morphology and eeotype of silent and vocal clades. We determined vocal ability of laboratory specimens duringdisturbance behavior. Vocal families had bony (not flexible or segmented) spines, well-developed anterior and/or posteriorserrations, and statistically significantly longer spines. We compared morphology of the proximal end of the pectoral spine betweenvocal and silent species. For vocal taxa, microscopic rounded or bladed ridges or knobs were present on the dorsal process.Most silent species had reduced processes with exclusively smooth, convoluted, or honeycombed surfaces very similar tospine-locking surfaces, or they had novel surfaces (beaded, vacuolated, cobwebbed). Most callichthyids had ridges but many weresilent during disturbance. All doradid, most auchenipterid and most mochokid species were vocal and had ridges or knobs.Within the Auchenipteridae, vocal species had spines with greater weight and serration development but not length. Silentauchenipterids had thin, brittle, distally segmented spines with few microscopic serrations on only one margin and a highly reduceddorsal process lacking any known vocal morphology. Silent auchenipterids are derived and pelagic, while all vocal generaare basal and benthopelagic. This is the first phylogenetic evidence for stridulation mechanism loss within catfishes. Phylogeneticmapping of vocal ability, spine condition, and eeotype revealed the repeated presence of silence and vocal taxa, short and longspines, and eeotype shifts within clades. 7Molecular aspects of eye development and regeneration in the Australian redclaw crayfish,Cherax quadricarinatus显示文摘The compound eye evolved over 500 million years ago and enables mosaic vision in most arthropod species.The molecular regulation of the development of the compound eye has been primarily studied in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster.However,due to the nature of holometabolous insects halting growth after their terminal metamorphosis into the adult form,they lack the capacity to regenerate.Crustaceans,unlike holometabolous insects,continue to grow during adulthood,achieved through regular shedding of their exoskeleton,in a cyclic process known as molting.This therefore offers crustaceans as a highly suitable model to study ocular regeneration in the adult arthropod eye.We have assessed the regenerative capacity of the retinal section of the Cherax quadricarinatus(red-claw crayfish)eye,following ablation and successive post-metamorphic molts.This work then provides a transcriptomic description of the outer,pigmented retinal tissue(the ommatidia and lamina ganglionaris)and the basal,non-pigmented neuroendocrine ocular tissue(the X-organ Sinus Gland complex,hemiellipsoid body and optic nerve).Using comparative analysis,we identified all the transcripts in the C.quadricarinatus ocular transcriptome that are known to function in compound eye development in D.melanogaster.Differentially and uniquely transcribed genes of the retina are described,suggesting proposed mechanisms that may regulate ocular regeneration in decapod Crustacea.This research exemplifies the application C.quadricarinatus holds as an optimal model to study the regulation of ocular regeneration.Further in-depth transcriptomic analyses are now required,sampled throughout the regeneration process to better define the regulatory mechanism.Tomer Ventura Michael J.Stewart Jennifer C.Chandler Bronwyn Rotgans Abigail Elizur Alex W.Hewitt 2019Aquaculture and Fisheries2019,4,1:0

9A 30% incidence of renal cysts with varying sizes and densities in biomedical research swine is not associated with renal dysfunction显示文摘Background:Renal cystic disease arising from various etiologies results in fluid-filled cavities within the kidneys.Moreover,preexisting renal dysfunction has been shown to exacerbate multiple pathologies.While swine bred for biomedical research are often clinically inspected for illness/parasites,more advanced diagnostics may aid in uncovering underlying renal abnormalities.Methods:Computed tomography was performed in 54 female prepubertal Yorkshire swine to characterize renal cysts;urine and blood chemistry,and histology of cysts were also performed.Results:Digital reconstruction of right and left kidneys demonstrated that roughly one-third of the animals(17/54;31%)had one or more renal cyst.Circulating biomarkers of renal function were not different between animals that had cysts and those that did not.Alternatively,urinary glucose(P=.03)was higher and sodium(P=.07)tended to be lower in animals with cysts compared to animals without,with no differences in protein(P=.14)or potassium(P=.20).Aspiration of cystic fluid was feasible in two animals,which revealed that the cystic fluid urea nitrogen(97.6±28.7 vs 911.3±468.2 mg/dL),potassium(29.8±14.4 vs 148.2±24.85 mmol/L),uric acid(2.55±1.35 vs 11.4±5.65 mg/dL),and creatinine(60.34±17.26 vs 268.99±95.79 mg/dL)were much lower than in the urine.Histology demonstrated a cyst that markedly compresses the adjacent cortex and is lined by a single layer of flattened epithelium,bounded by fibrous connective tissue which extends into the parenchyma.There is tubular atrophy and loss in these areas.Conclusion:This study provides valuable insight for future studies focusing on kidney function in swine bred for biomedical research.Belinda I.Gómez Joshua S.Little Alisa J.Leon Ian J.Stewart David M.Burmeister 2020Animal Models and Experimental Medicine2020,3,3:0
