| 1 | Divergent expression of bacterial wall sensing toll-like receptors 2 and 4 in colorectal cancer显示文摘AIM To characterize the expression of toll-like receptors(TLR) 2 and 4 in colorectal cancer(CRC) and in normal colorectal mucosa.METHODS We analysed tissue samples from a prospective series of 118 unselected surgically treated patients with CRC. Sections from formalin fixed, paraffin embedded specimens were analysed for TLR2 and TLR4 expression by immunohistochemistry. Two independent assessors evaluated separately expression at the normal mucosa, at the invasive front and the bulk of the carcinoma, and in the lymph node metastases when present. Expression levels in different locations were compared and their associations with clinicopathological features including TNM-stage and the grade of the tumour and 5-year follow-up observations were analysed.RESULTS Normal colorectal epithelium showed a gradient of expression of both TLR2 and TLR4 with low levels in the crypt bases and high levels in the surface. In CRC, expression of both TLRs was present in all cases and in the major proportion of tumour cells. Compared to normal epithelium, TLR4 expression was significantly weaker but TLR2 expression stronger in carcinoma cells. Weak TLR4 expression in the invasive front was associated with distant metastases and worse cancerspecific survival at 5 years. In tumours of the proximal colon the cancer-specific survival at 5 years was 36.9% better with strong TLR4 expression as compared with those with weak expression(P = 0.044). In contrast, TLR2 expression levels were not associated with prognosis. Tumour cells in the lymph node metastases showed higher TLR4 expression and lower TLR2 expression than cells in primary tumours.CONCLUSION Tumour cells in CRC show downregulation of TLR4 and upregulation of TLR2. | 4 | Does knowledge of physical activity recommendations increase physical activity among Chinese college students? Empirical investigations based on the transtheoretical model显示文摘Background: Based on the transtheoretical model, the current study investigated whether awareness of physical activity(PA) recommendations had an impact on the stages of PA behavior change and levels of PA among Chinese college students.Methods: In Study 1, with a cross-sectional study design, 9826 students were recruited, and their knowledge of international PA recommendations,PA stage distribution, and self-reported PA level were surveyed. Pearson's χ2 test was used to test whether those participants who were aware and not aware of PA guidelines were equally distributed across the stages of PA behavior, and independent t test was conducted to test the group difference in the actual levels of PA. In Study 2, 279 students who were not aware of the PA recommendations were randomly allocated to either an intervention group or a control group, and only those in the intervention group were presented with international PA guidelines. In both groups,students' PA stages and PA level were examined before the test and then 4 months post-test. Mc Nemar's test for correlated proportions and repeated-measures analysis of variance were conducted to examine the changes in PA stage membership and PA level after the intervention.Results: Study 1 results revealed that only 4.4% of the surveyed students had correct knowledge of PA recommendations. Those who were aware of the recommendations were in later stages of PA behavior(χ~2(4) = 167.19, p < 0.001). They were also significantly more physically active than those who were not aware of the recommendations(t(443.71) = 9.00, p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.53). Study 2 results demonstrated that the intervention group participants who were at the precontemplation and contemplation stages at the pre-test each progressed further in the PA stages in the post-test(χ~2(1) = 112.06, p < 0.001; χ~2(1) = 118.76, p = 0.03, respectively), although no significant change in PA level was observed(t(139) < 1, p = 0.89).Conclusion: The results showed that awareness of the PA recommendations was associated with higher stages and levels of PA behavior, and a brief educational exposure to PA recommendations led to improved stages of PA behavior but no change in the levels of PA among Chinese college students. | 5 | Epidermal Patterning Genes Impose Non‐cell Autonomous Cell Size Determination and have Additional Roles in Root Meristem Size Control显示文摘The regulation of cellular growth is of vital importance for embryonic and postembryonic patterning.Growth regulation in the epidermis has importance for organ growth rates in roots and shoots,proposing epidermal cells as an interesting model for cellular growth regulation.Here we assessed whether the root epidermis is a suitable model system to address cell size determination.In Arabidopsis thaliana L.,root epidermal cells are regularly spaced in neighbouring tricho‐(root hair)and atrichoblast(non‐hair)cells,showing already distinct cell size regulation in the root meristem.We determined cell sizes in the root meristem and at the onset of cellular elongation,revealing that not only division rates but also cellular shape is distinct in tricho‐and atrichoblasts.Intriguingly,epidermal‐patterning mutants,failing to defne differential vacuolization in neighbouring epidermal cell fles,also display non‐differential growth.Using these epidermal‐patterning mutants,we show that polarized growth behaviour of epidermal tricho‐and atrichoblast is interdependent,suggesting non‐cell autonomous signals to integrate tissue expansion.Besides the interweaved cell‐type‐dependent growth mechanism,we reveal an additional role for epidermal patterning genes in root meristem size and organ growth regulation.We conclude that epidermal cells represent a suitable model system to study cell size determination and interdependent tissue growth. | Christian Lfke Kai Dünser Jürgen Kleine‐Vehn | 2013 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2013，55，9： | 3 |
| 6 | Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis that aggravates after acinetobacter baumannii pneumonia:A case report显示文摘We report an atypical case of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis(ANMDARE). A 27-year-old man diagnosed with ANMDARE received immunotherapy and had a good recovery. However, within one month, he developed severe status epilepticus and decreased level of conscience with new hyperpyrexia and dyspnea, and was admitted to the emergency intensive care unit. Acinetobacter baumanii were found in the sputum culture; and anti-NMDAR antibodies were positive(titer: 1/80) in the cerebrospinal fluid. Repeated immunotherapy was administered with antibacterial agents, and the patient recovered except for mild psychiatric sequelae. This is the first report of ANMDARE that aggravates after acinetobacter baumannii pneumonia.
