7Root Structure,Distribution and Biomass in Five Multipurpose Tree Species of Western Himalayas显示文摘The tree root distribution pattern and biomass of seventeen year old trees of Grewia optiva, Morus alba, Celtis australis, Bauhinia variegata and Robinia pseudoacacia were studied by excavation method. B. variegata roots penetrated to a maximum depth of 4.78 m, whereas, M. alba roots were found down to 1.48 m depth. Lateral spread was minimum in B. variegata(1.10 m) and maximum in R. pseudoacacia(7.33 m). Maximum root biomass of 6.30 kg was found in R. pseudoacacia and minimum(2.43 kg) was found in M. alba. For four species viz., G. optiva, M. alba, C. australis and R. pseudoacacia, 68%-87% root biomass occurred within top 0-30 cm soil depth, but for B. variegata this was only 45%. The soil binding factor was maximum in G. optiva and minimum in B. variegata. Soil physico-chemical properties also showed wide variation. The study suggests that B. variegata with a deep root system is the most suitable species for plantation under agroforestry systems. R. pseudoacacia and G. optiva with deep root systems, more lateral spread and high soil binding factor are suitable for plantation on degraded lands for soil conservation.Kartar Singh VERMA Sandeep KOHLI Rajesh KAUSHAL Om Parkash CHATURVEDI 2014Journal of Mountain Science2014,11,2:1

9An HIV 1/2 point of care test on sputum for screening TB/HIV coinfection in central India-Will it work?显示文摘Objective:To determine whether the OraQuick(?).HIV-1/2 Assay(OraSure Technologies, Inc.,Bethlehem,PA,USA) in sputum is a valid tool for HIV surveillance among TB patients. Methods:A cross sectional study was carried out on sputa of patients diagnosed with tuberculosis.Sputa were tested for antibodies to HIV using OraQuick. HIV-1/2 Assay(OraSure Technologies,Inc.,Bethlehem,PA,USA).The results were compared with results of serum ELISA.Results:Compared to serum ELISA,the OraQuick(?).HIV-1/2 Assay in sputum specimens reported 90%sensitivity(9/10)and 100%specificity(307/307),with a positive predictive value of 100%(95%CI:66.37%-100.00%)and a negative predictive value of 99.68%(95%CI:98.20%-99.99%). Conclusions:This testing method may provide a useful strategy for conducting HIV surveillance in possible co-infected TB patients at peripheral centres.Since there is no investment on infrastructure,it may be possible for paramedical health professionals to carry out the test. particularly in areas with low HIV endemicity.Prabha Desikan Sajal De Nitika Pant Pai Pradyumna K Mishra Kaushal Kumar Nikita Panwalkar Mayanka Verma Zia Ul Hasan Kewal K Maudar 2013Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2013,6,3:0
10Levels of neutrophil gelatinase-assosciated lipocalin in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in Indian population from Haryana state显示文摘AIM To study the levels of neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin(NGAL) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC).METHODS This was a non randomized case control study conducted at Department of Biochemistry,in collaboration with Regional Cancer Center over a period of one year. The study population included 50 adult newly diagnosed HNSCC patients reporting in outpatient department at Regional Cancer Center and compared with 50 healthy controls.NGAL was estimated by ELISA technique.Student t test and χ~2 test were applied for comparison of means of study groups.Correlations between groups were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient(r) formula.RESULTS Patients with HNSCC exhibited significantly increased levels of NGAL(P < 0.05) as compared to healthy controls(978.88 ± 261.39 ng/mL vs 34.83 ± 7.59 ng/mL).Out of 50,26 patients(52%) were in stage Ⅳ,21(42%) in stage Ⅲ,1(2%) patient in stage Ⅱ and 2(4%) patients were in stage Ⅰ.Metastasis was absent in 98% patients and mean NGAL levels were highest in these patients but P value was not significant.Mean NGAL levels were highest in stage Ⅳ [1041.54 ± 222.15 ng/mL(stage Ⅳ) vs 1040 ± 0.00 ng/mL(stage Ⅰ);900 ± 0.00 ng/mL(stage Ⅱ) and 1031.90 ± 202.55 ng/mL(stage Ⅲ)] and χ~2 test was highly significant(P < 0.001).Thirty-six patients(72%) were having moderately differentiated HNSCC and mean NGAL levels were maximum in patients with well differentiated HNSCC(1164 ± 315.64 ng/mL vs 1013.33 ± 161.19 ng/mL in moderately differentiated and 890 ± 11.55 ng/mL in poorly differentiated) and the results were also highly significant(P < 0.001,χ~2 test).CONCLUSION The present work demonstrates a potential role of NGAL as cancer biomarker and its use in monitoring the HNSCC progression.Monica Verma Kiran Dahiya Abhishek Soni Rakesh Dhankhar Veena S Ghalaut Aastha Bansal Vivek Kaushal 2017World Journal of Clinical Oncology2017,8,3:0
