Mid-Holocene climate change in North China, and the effect on cultural development显示文摘In this study, to reconstruct the paleoclimatic history, pollen and oxygen isotope were analyzed on the 160 samples of a 2.7 m peat core from Taishizhuang, Huailai County, Hebei Province. Combining our data with other information of climate history and archaeology from this area, we found that there is a close linkage between cultural development and the mid-Holocene (6000-3000 cal. aBP) environment changes. The main results and conclusions are presented as the following: The climate during 5678-5400 cal. aBP was unstable and in general colder and drier than today. From 5400 to 4800 cal. aBP the climate was much warmer and wetter than before. The climate during 4800-4300 cal. aBP was persistently cold, with an exceptional cold event occurring at 4600-4300 cal. aBP. This cold event was recorded at several other localities in Northern China even the Northern Hemisphere and played an important role in the cultural development. After the cold event, there was a return to warmer conditions between 4200 andJIN Guiyun & LIU Dongsheng (LIU Tungsheng)Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Shandong Province, Jinan 250012, China Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100029, China 2002Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,5:15
Climate as the dominant control on C_3 and C_4 plant abundance in the Loess Plateau: Organic carbon isotope evidence from the last glacial-interglacial loess-soil sequences显示文摘Abundance of C3 and C4 photosynthesis plants can be inferred relatively from stable carbon isotopic composi-tion of organic matter in soils. The samples from five sequences of the last glacial-interglacial loess-soil in the Chinese Loess Plateau have been measured for organic carbon isotopic ratios (d 13Corg). The organic carbon isotope data show that relative abundance (or biomass) of C4 plants was increased ca. 40% for each sampling site from the last glacial maximum (LGM) to Holocene optimum, and increased southeastward on the Loess Plateau during both periods of LGM and Holocene. Statistic analyses on the steady maximum d 13Corg values of Holocene soils and modern climatic data from the Loess Plateau and Inner Mongolia indicate that the C4 plant abundance increases with increasing temperature and decreasing precipitation. The C4 plant abundance is related much closer with mean April tem-perature and precipitation than annual. These results lead us to deduce following conclusions. First, temperature is the major factor for control on variations in C4 plant abundance in the Loess Plateau from the last glacial to interglacial. In the absence of favorable temperature condition, both of low moisture and low atmospheric CO2 concentration are insufficient to drive an expansion of the C4 plants in the plateau. Second, d 13Corg in the loess-paleosol sequences, as a proxy of the relative abundance of C4 plants in the Loess Plateau, could not be used as an indicator of changes in the summer monsoon intensity unless the tem-perature had changed without great amplitude. Since all C4 plants are grasses, finally, the increase of the C4 plants supports that forest has not been dominant in the ecosystem on the Loess Plateau during Holocene although precipitation and atmospheric CO2 were largely increased relative to those during LGM.GU Zhaoyan, LIU Qiang, XU Bing, HAN Jiamao, YANG Shiling, DING Zhongli & LIU Tungsheng Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100029, China Correspondence should be addressed to Gu Zhaoyan (e-mail: zgu@ 95777.com) 2003Chinese Science Bulletin2003,48,12:14
The high-resolution climate recorded in the δ^(18)O of Porites lutea from the Nansha Islands of China显示文摘A Porites lutea core from Yongshu Reef of Nansha Islands covering 50 years growth history was ana-ly/ed for oxygen isotopic composition with monthly and seasonally resolution. The calibration of the δ18O with the instrumental temperature indicated that the coral δ18O is a good indicator for sea surface temperature (SST) and air temperature (t). It can be used to reconstruct the SST and air temperature of the Yongshu Reef sea area. In addition, the coral δ18O provides signatures for the intensity of the East Asia monsoon and it is a record for the activities of El Nino events. With the calibrated SST and air temperature formulas, the most recent fifty years SST and air temperature were reconstructed based on the coral δ18O, thus back up the understanding of the climate of Nansha Islands to 1950. far beyond the limit of the instrumental recording since September 1988. It was found that, in general, increasing 1℃ air temperature results in 0.24‰decrease in skeletal δ18O.YU Kefu, CHEN Tegu, HUANG Dingcheng, ZHAO Huanting, ZHONG Jinliang & LIU Dongsheng (LIU Tungsheng)South China Sea Institute of Oceanoiogy, Chinese Academy of Sciences. 4Carbon isotopic records in paleosols over the Pliocene in Northern China: Implication on vegetation development and Tibetan uplift显示文摘Carbon isotopic composition of pedogenic carbonate can be used to estimate the proportion of C4 and C3 plants. Here we present carbon isotopic data of carbonate in a red earth section at Xifeng, central Loess Plateau. Results show that C4 vegetation increased in -4.4 Ma B.P., stabilized between 4.0 and 3.0 Ma B.P. The character and timing of C4 expansion on the Loess Plateau are similar, but different with other localities, e.g. Pakistan and Africa, implying that regional climate changes were main factors driving the expansion of C4 plants. This event is comparable in timing with increased aridity evidenced by Xifeng grain size and North Pacific eolian dust records. Therefore we argue that the Pliocene expansion of C4 plants in northern China might have been caused by the increased aridity, which in turn might be related to rapid uplift of the Tibetan Plateau.JIANG Wenying PENG Shuzhen HAO Qingzhen LIU Dongsheng(LIU Tungsheng) 2002Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,8:8
^(14)C measurement of forest soils in Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve显示文摘Organic carbon in forest soils of Qingyunsi and Wukesong profiles can be divided into fast and slow components. Δ14C values of these profiles decrease with increasing of depth. The Δ14C values in 30—40 cm depth interval of Wukesong profile are decreasing sharply until a very low value, showing that a strong geological environment change occurred about 1 560 years ago. The 14C apparent ages of Wukesong profile show that the coniferous and broad-leaf mixed forests around Wukesong profile have been developing since 425 a BP, which is consistent with historical documents. The penetrating depths of 'bomb 14C' in Qingyunsi and Wukesong profiles are 10 and 20 cm, respectively.SHEN Chengde , LIU Dongsheng (LIU Tungsheng) , PENG Shaolin, SUN Yanmin , JIANG Mantao , Yl Weixi , XING Changping , GAO Quanzhou , LI Zhi’an and ZHOU Guoyi Guangzhou Institute of Geochemisry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou 510640, China Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Sciences , Beijing 100029, China South China Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou 510650, China 1999Chinese Science Bulletin1999,44,3:7
Weathering Signals of Millennial-Scale Oscillations of the East-Asian Summer Monsoon over the Last 220 ka显示文摘This study generated a high-resolution paleoweathering record of the loess-soilsequence from the central Loess Plateau covering the last 220 ka using the ratio between the CBD(citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite) extractable free Fe2O3 (Fed) and total Fe2O3 (Fet). The new proxyshows a series of millennial oscillations, which are not necessarily documented by magneticsusceptibility from the same site. Because chemical weathering in the region depends mainly uponsummer precipitation and temperature, we interpret these changes to be a result of millennial-scalevariations in the strength of the East-Asian summer monsoon. Over the last glacial period, there isgeneral agreement between the loess weathering record and the GRIP ice δ18O record. The firstsuggests a rather stable summer monsoon pattern during the Last Interglacial period (marine δ18Ostage 5e). Large amplitude millennial oscillations of the summer monsoon seem to be particularlycharacteristic of the last glacial period whereas the fluctuations for the older periods are smoother.GU0 Zhengtang PENG Shuzhen WEI Lanying LIU Tungsheng Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. 7δ^13Csc values of the loess-paleosol sequence in Dali area, Shaanxi Province, China, and paleoenvironmental implications显示文摘The carbon isotopic ratios of carbonate in the two profiles of the Dali area were analyzed and some new understandings on the influencing factors of the δ13CSC value of the loess-paleosol sequence and its paleoenvironmental implications were discussed preliminarily in this report. The 13CSC value of the Dali loess-paleosol sequence is synchronizing with the variance of magnetic susceptibility basically and the negative peaks of the δ13CSC curves are corresponding to the different developmental periods of the paleosol. It is believed that the intervention of the CO2 produced by plants will cause the decrease of the δ13CSC value, the amplitude of which may be relevant to the paleovegetation density and the ancient humidity. The relative biomass of C4 plants in the vegetation will affect the sublevel change of the δ13CSC. Low δ13CSC value by and large indicates the environmental conditions of the relatively abundant vegetation and humid climate. During the last 250000 years, the period with the sparsest vegetation and the most arid climate is the phase of the loess in L2 depositing and the period with the most abundant vegetation and the most humid climate is the last interglacial period. The δ13CSC curves of Dali also show that the High Temperature and Large Precipitation Event of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau during 40-30 kaBP had affected the Central Shaanxi Plain with relatively humid climate, and had apparent influence on the local vegetation and humidity.LI Yumei & LIU Dongsheng (LIU Tungsheng)Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100029 (e-mail: liyrney@163.com) 2003Chinese Science Bulletin2003,48,9:2
Paleo-environmental study on the growth of magnetotactic bacteria and precipitation of magnetosomes in Chinese loess-paleosol sequences显示文摘405 samples were collected from L5-S5-L6 in consideration of obvious variations in susceptibility of the geological sections, which are section Xifeng in Gansu Province and section Duanjiapo in Shaanxi Province for study of magnetotactic bacteria (MB) and magnetosomes (MS) in Chinese loess-paleosol sequences. MB in each sample were observed by TEM after being cultured under 8-18℃, room temperature (RT), 25℃, 26℃ and 30℃ conditions. In general, MB are distributed widely in loess-paleosol sequences, fewer in loess layers with predomination of vibriod in shape. However, there are more MB in paleosol layers with morphological varieties such as roddish, vibriod and occasionally approximately coccus. The magnetosomes (MS) in MB of paleosol are usually arranged in chains along the cells. It was also found that MB growth and MS formation are associated with the environment in which MB live. It can be inferred from the distributions of MB and MS that the paleoclimates fluctuated during the formation ofPENG Xianzhi JIA Rongfen LI Rongsen DAI Shunying LIU Tungsheng 2000Chinese Science Bulletin2000,45,S1:2
Geomagnetic anomalies recorded in L9 of the Songjiadian loess section in southeastern Chinese Loess Plateau显示文摘Detailed magnetostratigraphic and rock magnetic investigations on L8-S12 of the Songjiadian loess section in the Sanmenxia area, southernmost margin of the Chinese Loess Plateau were conducted in this study.Matuyama/Brunhes (M/B) boundary occurred at the bottom of the loess unit L8.The top and bottom boundaries of the Jaramillo polarity subchron are found in the middle of L10 and the bottom of L12,respectively.Magnetic fabric of the loess layers maintains the original depositional features and the recorded remanent magnetization analysis indicates little post-deposition disturbance experienced. In late Matuyama chron, two anomalies of geomagnetic field have been detected in L9.Our data demonstrated that these recorded anomalies were less likely a result of remagnetization, but more possibly the signature of geomagnetic excursions occurred, named SJD1 and SJD2.It is calculated that the midpoint ages of SJD1 and SJD2 are 0.917 Ma and 0.875 Ma,respectively, and the time-interval between the two events approximates 12 ka.Chronologically,SJD1 is close to the Santa Rosa (0.922 Ma) and SJD2 corresponds to the Kamikatsura (0.886 Ma) excursions. In consistence with previous studies, the geomagnetic field was weakened during these events.WANG DaoJing WANG YongCheng HAN JingTai DUAN MuGang SHAN JiaZeng LIU TungSheng 2010Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,6:2
