Multi-functional stretchable and flexible sensor array to determine the location, shape, and pressure: Application in a smart robot显示文摘The rapid increase in the aging population prompts the development of wearable devices and sophisticated robots. With their ability to collect complex information about their surroundings via e-skins, robots could perform more dynamic and variable tasks such as rescue missions or caring for the elderly. In this paper, we present a new concept of utilizing a very simple, highly flexible and stretchable capacitor sensor array, that can be attached on the surface of a retractable robot hand to realize three functions: determining the location, shape, and pressure of an object. This adaptive sensing system is accomplished using capacitors connected by aligned carbon nanotube(CNT) films constructed on an elastomer dielectric material, which can reduce the requirement on the accuracy of the machine vision system. This study has a very broad application in the manufacture of intelligent software robots. | HAN LiBiao DING JianNing WANG Shuai XU Jiang YUAN NingYi CHENG GuangGui LIU ZunFeng | 2018 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2018,61,8: | 9

Recent developments in artificial spider silk and functional gel fibers显示文摘It is highly desirable to develop fiber materials with high strength and toughness while increasing fiber strength always results in a decrease in toughness.Spider silk is a natural fiber material with an excellent combination of high strength and toughness, which is produced from the spinning dope solution by gelation and drawing spinning process. This encourages people to prepare artificial fibers by mimicking the material, structure, and spinning of natural spider silk.In this review,we first summarized the preparation of artificial spider silk prepared via such a gelation process from different types of materials, including nonrecombinant proteins, recombinant proteins, polypeptides, synthetic polymers, and polymer nanocomposites. In addition, different spinning approaches for spinning artificial spider silk are also summarized. In the third section, some novel application scenarios of the artificial spider silk were summarized, such as artificial muscles, sensing, and smart fibers. | Abdul Qadeer Khan Muhammad Shafiq Jiatian Li Kaiqing Yu Zunfeng Liu Xiang Zhou Meifang Zhu | 2023 | SmartMat2023,4,6: | 0
Morphology modulation of artificial muscles by thermodynamic-twist coupling显示文摘Human muscles can grow and change their length with body development;therefore, artificial muscles that modulate their morphology according to changing needs are needed. In this paper,we report a strategy to transform an artificial muscle into a new muscle with a different morphology by thermodynamic-twist coupling, and illustrate its structural evolution during actuation. The muscle length can be continuously modulated over a large temperature range, and actuation occurs by continuously changing the temperature. This strategy is applicable to different actuation modes, including tensile elongation, tensile contraction and torsional rotation. This is realized by twist insertion into a fibre to produce torsional stress.Fibre anne aling causes partial thermodynamic relaxation of the spiral molecular chains, which serves as internal tethering and inhibits fibre twist release, thus producing a self-supporting artificial muscle that actuates under heating. At a sufficiently high temperature, further relaxation of the spiral molecular chains occurs, resulting in a new mus cle with a different length.A structural study provides an understanding of the thermo dynamic-twist coupling. This work provides a new design strategy for intelligent materials. | Xiaoyu Hu Jiatian Li Sitong Li Guanghao Zhang Run Wang Zhongsheng Liu Mengmeng Chen Wenqian He Kaiqing Yu Wenzhong Zhai Weiqiang Zhao Abdul Qadeer Khan Shaoli Fang Ray HBaughman Xiang Zhou Zunfeng Liu | 2023 | National Science Review2023,10,1: | 0
Research Progress on Spider-Inspired Tough Fibers显示文摘Spider silk has attracted increasing attention due to its fascinating combination of ultra-high tenacity high strength, and excellent elasticity.Based on the fundamental biological studies on spider silk, significant research efforts have been devoted to biotechnology and chemical synthesis to mimic or even exceed the properties of natural spider silk fibers. Moreover, the natural spider silk fiber has been simulated with the burgeoning development of numerous spinning technologies, including wet spinning, dry spinning, electrostatic spinning, and microfluidic spinning, which continuously help to optimize the properties of synthetic spider silk. The unique characteristics of natural spider silk include high refraction transmission, heat resistance, antimicrobial properties, biocompatibility, and super shrinking.Biconical recreation of spider silk with special features and extraordinary capabilities demonstrates potential applications in biomedicine, smart wearables, artificial muscles and sensors, aerospace and other domains. | Shiyong Liu Zhanpeng Cui Zunfeng Liu Weiqiang Zhao Xiang Zhou | 2023 | Chinese Journal of Chemistry2023,41,23: | 0
Size-refinement enhanced flexibility and electrochemical performance of MXene electrodes for flexible waterproof supercapacitors显示文摘Increasing mechanical flexibility without sacrificing electrochemical performance of the electrode material is highly desired in the design of flexible electrochemical energy storage devices. In metal-related materials science, decreasing the grain size introduces more grain boundaries;this stops dislocations and crack propagation under deformation, and results in increased strength and toughness. However, such a size refinement effect has not been considered in the mechanical properties, particle stacking, wetting, and electrochemical performances of flexible supercapacitor electrodes. In this paper,MXene was used as an electrode material to study the size refinement effect of flexible supercapacitors.Size refinement improved the strength and toughness of the MXene electrodes, and this resulted in increased flexibility.Finite elemental analysis provided a theoretical understanding of size refinement-increased flexibility. Moreover, the size refinement also improved the specific surface area, electric conductance, ion transportation, and water wetting properties of the electrode, and the size refinement provided highly increased energy density and power density of the MXene supercapacitors.A highly flexible,water-proof supercapacitor was fabricated using size-refined MXene. The current study provides a new viewpoint for designing tough and flexible energy storage electrodes. The size refinement effect may also be applicable for metal ion batteries and electronic and photo devices composed of MXene and other nanoparticles. | Jinkun Sun Yingjian Liu Jiayi Huang Jiatian Li Mengmeng Chen Xiaoyu Hu Yatao Liu Run Wang Yanan Shen Jingjing Li Xuecheng Chen Dong Qian Baigang An Zunfeng Liu | 2021 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2021,30,12: | 0
SYNTHESIS AND ANTIPROLIFERATIVE ACTIVITY STUDY OF NOVEL COUMARIN DERIVATIVES显示文摘A series of coumarin derivatives(A01-A13) have been designed and synthesized, and their biological activities were evaluated in vitro in 5 different cell lines: Liver hepatocellular cells(HepG2), breast cancer cells(MCF-7), human malignant melanoma cells(A375), human colonic carcinoma(HT-29) and non-small cell lung cancer cells(A549). Furthermore, A05 was screened in kinase sets and the results showed that the possible targets of it were MST3/STK24 and TNIK. Compounds A01 and A05 displayed the most potent antiproliferative activities in vitro, which suggested that the picolinamide moiety was important for antiproliferative activities. Compound A05 was screened against a set of kinases and the results indicated the kinases MST3/STK24 and TNIK as possible targets. | ZHANG Keping WEN Kai LIU Zunfeng ZHOU Xiang | 2018 | 离子交换与吸附2018,34,5: | 0
Spider Silk Supercontraction‑Inspired Cotton‑Hydrogel Self‑Adapting Textiles显示文摘Smart textiles are able to self-adapt to an irregular surface. So,they found new applications in intelligent clothes and equipments, where the properties and functionality of traditional polymeric fibers are insufficient, and hard to be realized.Inspired by the supercontraction behavior of the spider silk,we prepared a spinnable hydrogel to form a sheath-core-like composite yarn, after being coated on cotton yarn. The strong hydrogen bonding between the cotton yarn and the polar groups of the hydrogel provides an outstanding mechanical stability, and the twists insertion forms a spiral-like architecture, which exhibited moisture-responsive super contraction behavior.By structural tailoring the chirality of the fiber twists and coiling extends into homo-chiral and heterochiral architectures,as displays contraction and expansion when is exposed to the moisture.Once the relative humidity is increased from 60 to 90%,a homochiral yarn exhibits 90%contraction,while a heterochiral yarn shows 450% expansion, and the maximum work capacity reached up to 6.1 J/Kg.The super contracted yarn can be re-stretched to its original length manifesting cyclability, which can be exploited to build a smart textile, selfadaptive to irregular surfaces.Such a strategy may be further extended to a wide variety of materials to achieve intelligent textiles from common fiber or yarns. | Abdul Qadeer Khan Kaiqing Yu Jiatian Li Xueqi Leng Meilin Wang Xuesong Zhang Baigang An Bin Fei Wei Wei Huichuan Zhuang Muhammad Shafiq Lili Bao Zunfeng Liu Xiang Zhou | 2022 | Advanced Fiber Materials2022,4,6: | 0
