Body Waves Revealed by Spatial Stacking on Long-Term Cross-Correlation of Ambient Noise显示文摘Theoretical and experimental studies indicate that complete Green's Function can be retrieved from cross-correlation in a diffuse field. High SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) surface waves have been extracted from cross-correlations of long-duration ambient noise across the globe. Body waves, not extracted in most of ambient noise studies, are thought to be more difficult to retrieve from regular ambient noise data processing. By stacking cross-correlations of ambient noise in 50 km inter-station distance bins in China, western United States and Europe, we observed coherent 20–100 s core phases(Sc S, PKIKPPKIKP, PcP PKPPKP) and crustal-mantle phases(Pn, P, PL, Sn, S, SPL, SnS n, SS, SSPL) at distances ranging from 0 to 4 000 km. Our results show that these crustal-mantle phases show diverse characteristics due to different substructure and sources of body waves beneath different regions while the core phases are relatively robust and can be retrieved as long as stations are available. Further analysis indicates that the SNR of these body-wave phases depends on a compromise between stacking fold in spatial domain and the coherence of pre-stacked cross-correlations. Spatially stacked cross-correlations of seismic noise can provide new virtual seismograms for paths that complement earthquake data and that contain valuable information on the structure of the Earth. The extracted crustal-mantle phases can be used to study lithospheric heterogeneities and the robust core phases are significantly useful to study the deep structure of the Earth, such as detecting fine heterogeneities of the core-mantle boundary and constraining differential rotation of the inner core.Kai Wang Yinhe Luo Kaifeng Zhao Limeng Zhang 2014Journal of Earth Science2014,25,6:1

Heat Shielding Effects in the Earth's Crust显示文摘Knowledge of heat flow and associated variations of temperature with depth is crucial for understanding how the Earth functions. Here, we demonstrate possible heat shielding effects that result from the occurrence of mafic intrusions/layers(granulitic rocks) within a dominantly granitic middle crust and/or ultramafic intrusions/layers(peridotitic rocks) within a dominantly granulitic lower crust; heat shielding is a familiar phenomenon in heat engineering and thermal metamaterials. Simple one-dimensional calculations suggest that heat shielding due to the intercalation of granitic, granulitic and peridotitic rocks will increase Moho temperatures substantially. This study may lead to a rethinking of numerous proposed lower crustal processes.Yixian Xu Lupei Zhu Qinyan Wang Yinhe Luo Jianghai Xia 2017Journal of Earth Science2017,28,1:1
The influences of large earthquake signals on the recovery of surface waves from ambient noise cross-correlation functions显示文摘Ambient noise tomography(ANT)has been widely used to image crust and upmost mantle structures.ANT assumes that sources of ambient noise are diffuse and evenly distributed in space and the energy of different modes is equipartitioned. At present, the sources of the primary and the secondary microseisms are well studied, but there are only a few on the studies of long-period ambient noise sources. In this study,we study the effects of large earthquake signals on the recovery of surface waves from seismic ambient noise data recorded by seismic stations from the US permanent networks and Global Seismographic Network(GSN).Our results show that large earthquake signals play an important role on the recovery of long-period surface waves from ambient noise cross-correlation functions. Our results are consistent with previous studies that suggest the contribution of earthquake signals to the recovery of surface waves from cross-correlations of ambient noise is dominant at periods larger than 20–40 s.Huayi Zhu Xiaojin Xie Xiaozhou Yang Yinhe Luo 2020Earthquake Science2020,33,5:0
Application of Multifocusing Method for an Irregular Topography Imaging显示文摘A stack of records becomes one of the main steps in modern seismic data processing. In the stack procedure, the crucial operation is time correction. Conventional methods, e.g., normal moveout (NMO) and dip moveout (DMO) stacks require a sufficiently accurate macro-velocity model, whereas a multifocusing imaging method does not depend on a macro-velocity model. The multifocusing method proposed by Gelchinsky et al. belongs to a group of methods that can be characterized as macro-model-independent imaging methods. The multifocusing method represents a transformation of 2-D multicoverage reflection data into a simulated zero-offset stack profile. This transformation is based on a completely data-derived spatial stacking operator, and includes stacking large supergathers of seismic traces, each of which can span many CMP gathers. By extending the multifocusing moveout formula to explicitly account for non-zero elevations of the source and receiver, the multifocusing imaging method can yield appropriate results when seismic data are acquired over an irregular topography. In recent years, many applications of multifocusing imaging over an irregular topography have demonstrated its advantages in comparison with conventional CMP processing. This paper illustrates the corresponding formulas for a synthetic data example modeled by the wave equation finite difference method. The result of the synthetic example is very encouraging. By stacking large supergathers and applying multifocusing moveout correction, the reflectors are aligned very well and the S/N is greatly improved. We have also applied multifocusing imaging over an irregular topography to a real data example. The elevation of the data acquisition area varies considerably. Applying multifocusing imaging, a substantial improvement of the simulated section was achieved, compared with a conventional CMP stacked section.Luo Yinhe Liu Jiangping Yao Yao 2005Journal of China University of Geosciences2005,16,3:0
