1Synthesize of AZ31/TiC magnesium matrix composites using friction stir processing显示文摘Friction stir processing(FSP)is a novel solid state technique to synthesize metal matrix composites. In the present work,an attempt has been made to synthesize AZ31/TiC magnesium matrix composites using FSP and to analyze the microstructure using scanning electron microscopy.A groove was prepared on 6 mm thick AZ31 magnesium alloy plates and compacted with TiC particles. The width of the groove was varied to result in four different volume fraction of TiC particles(0,6,12 and 18 vol.%).A single pass FSP was carried out using a tool rotational speed of 1200 rpm, traverse speed of 40 mm/min and an axial force of 10 kN.Scanning electron microscopy was employed to study the microstructure of the synthesized composites. The results indicated that TiC particles were distributed uniformly in the magnesium matrix without the formation of clusters. There was no interfacial reaction between the magnesium matrix and the TiC particle.TiC particles were properly bonded to the magnesium matrix.M.Balakrishnan I.Dinaharan R.Palanivel R.Sivaprakasam 2015Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2015,3,1:7
2Influence of processing route on microstructure and wear resistance of fly ash reinforced AZ31 magnesium matrix composites显示文摘Utilizing fly ash(FA)as reinforcement for magnesium matrix composites(MMCs)brings down the production cost and the land pollution.Magnesium alloy AZ31 was reinforced with FA particles(10 vol.%)successfully by two different processing methods namely conventional stir casting and friction stir processing(FSP).The microstructural features were observed using optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and electron backscatter diffraction. The sliding wear behavior was tested using a pin-on-disc wear apparatus. The stir cast composite showed inhomogeneous particle dispersion and coarse grain structure. Some of the FA particles decomposed and reacted with the matrix alloy to produce undesirable compounds.Conversely,FSP composite showed superior particle dispersion and fine, equiaxed grains by dynamic recrystallization.FA particles encountered disintegration but there was no interfacial reaction.FSP composite demonstrated higher strengthening and wear resistance to that of stir cast composite. The morphology of the worn surface and the wear debris were studied in detail.I.Dinaharan S.C.Vettivel M.Balakrishnan E.T.Akinlabi 2019Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2019,7,1:2
3Effect of Hardfacing Consumables on Ballistic Performance of Q&T Steel Joints显示文摘This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of hardfacing consumables on ballistic performance of armour grade quenched and tempered(Q&T)steel welded joints. To evaluate the effect of hardfacing consumables, joints were fabricated using 4 mm thick tungsten carbide(WC)/chromium carbide(CrC)hardfaced middle layer;above and below which austenitic stainless steel(SS)layers were deposited on both sides of the hardfaced interlayer.Shielded metal arc welding(SMAW)process were used to deposite all(hardfaced layer and SS layers)layers. The fabricated joints were evaluated for its ballistic performance, and the results were compared with respect to depth of penetration(DOP)on weld metal and heat-affected zone(HAZ)locations. From the ballistic test results,it was observed that both the joints successfully stopped the bullet penetration at weld center line.Of the two joints, the joint made with CrC hardfaced interlayer(CAHA)offered better ballistic resistance at weld metal. This is because its hardness is higher due to the presence of primary carbides of needle shape, polyhedral shape and eutectic matrix containing a mixture of gt M7C3carbides in the CrC hardfaced interlayer. The scattering hardness level in the WC interlayer, the matrix decomposition resulted lower hardness and the co-existence of d ferrite in the interface between hardfacing and SS root/SS cap could be attributed to the inferior ballistic resistance of the joint made with WC hardfaced interlayer(WAHA joint).M.BALAKRISHNAN V.BALASUBRAMANIAN G.MADHUSUDHAN REDDY 2013Defence Technology(防务技术)2013,9,4:1
4Evaluation of Zero and Sub-zero Temperature Tensile and Impact Properties of Quenched and Tempered Steel Weldments显示文摘Combat vehicles using armour grade quenched and tempered(Q&T)steel are needed to be operated under different climatic conditions. However, the properties meeting the room temperature test conditions may not necessarily be required to meet the low temperature operating conditions. The influences of shielded metal arc welding(SMAW)process, flux cored arc welding(FCAW)processes and test temperatures below room temperature up to-60 ℃ on tensile and impact toughness properties of armour grade Q&T steel welds were reported. The tensile and impact properties of the joints showed incremental trend with respect to the decrement in test temperature up to-40℃irrespective of the welding processes used. The increment in tensile and impact properties of SMAW and FCAW joints subjected to the low temperature environment is due to plastic strain-induced phase transformation of retained austenite into martensite phase.Among the two processes,SMAW process welded joint showed better tensile and impact properties than its FCAW counterpart joints.M.BALAKRISHNAN V.BALASUBRAMANIAN M.A.MUTHU MANICKAM 2016Journal of Iron and Steel Research(International)2016,23,11:0
