1基于区域ATOVS数据同化的2008中国南方低温雨雪冰冻灾害的暴雪监测研究显示文摘2008年1月中国南方地区遭受了严重的低温雨雪冰冻灾害,地面常规观测、地面雷达观测等气象监测手段因受冰雪灾害的影响,未能提供全面及时的雪情信息.为了补充雪情数据,国家卫星气象中心采用区域ATOVS卫星遥感数据和NCEP预报数据,利用与美国NCAR合作开发的WRF三维变分预报/同化系统(其中陆面子过程选用NOAH方案),建立了基于区域ATOVS数据同化的2008中国南方低温雨雪冰冻灾害的暴雪监测系统,提供了暴雪灾害时段内每6h一次的雪水当量演化分布数据.本文系统阐述了基于区域ATOVS数据同化的2008中国南方特大暴雪灾害监测方案,并对比分析了同化前、后模拟结果与观测资料的吻合度.研究表明:同化后的分析场能更好地反映此次强降雪过程的天气特征,雪深的计算精度较同化前有明显改进,从而验证了基于区域ATOVS数据同化的雪情监测方案的可行性.该研究不仅为暴雪天气灾害应急服务提供了及时准确的雪情空间分布和演变信息,也为区域ATOVS数据的应用开辟了新途径.陆其峰 张文江 张鹏 吴雪宝 张凤英 刘志权 DALE M.Barker 2010中国科学(D辑)2010,40,3:10
2Monitoring the 2008 cold surge and frozen disasters snowstorm in South China based on regional ATOVS data assimilation显示文摘In January 2008, South China experienced extremely low temperatures, heavy snowstorms, and severe frosts (2008 Frost Disaster, for short), which led to (partial) failures of observations from ground stations and ground radars resulting in a lack of necessary emergency information. To compensate for the failure of ground observations and to provide timely disaster information, the National Satellite Meteorological Center of China (NSMC) established a snow storm monitoring system for the 2008 Frost Disaster, which was based on the WRF Three Dimension Variational Assimilation and Forecast system (with NOAH as the land surface sub-process model) cooperatively developed by NSMC and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), US. This system made full use of ATOVS and NCEP data to provide estimates of snow water equivalent every 6 hours during the storm. In this study, the ATOVS assimilation based snowstorm monitoring scheme was explored in detail, while the modeled results with and without ATOVS assimilation were compared against related observations. Results showed that the coupling of ATOVS assimilation into the proposed monitoring system evidently delineates weather characteristics of the snowstorm process more accurately, and demonstrated the feasibility of the system for snowstorm monitoring and forecasting. Through theoretical analyses and case discussion, this study proposes a reliable and practicable scheme to provide timely and accurate information on snow spatial distribution and temporal development for disaster mitigation, and illustrates a new application of ATOVS data.DALE M.Barker 2010Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,8:2

5Environmental temperatures,physiology and behavior limit the range expansion of invasive Burmese pythons in southeastern USA显示文摘A well-established population of Burmese pythons resides in the Everglades of southern Florida.Prompted in part by a report that identified much of southern USA as suitable habitat for expansion or establishment of the Burmese python,we examined the plausibility of this snake to survive winters at sites north of the Everglades.We integrated daily low and high temperatures recorded from October to February from 2005-2011 at Homestead,Orlando and Gainesville,Florida;and Aiken,South Carolina,with minimum temperatures projected for python digestion(16℃),activity(5℃)and survival(0℃).Mean low and high temperatures decreased northward from Homestead to Aiken and the number of days of freezing temperatures increased northward.Digestion was impaired or inhibited for 2 months in the Everglades and up to at least 5 months in Aiken,and activity was increasingly limited northward during these months.Reports of overwinter survivorship document that a single bout of low and freezing temperatures results in python death.The capacity for Burmese pythons to successfully overwinter in more temperate regions of the USA is seemingly prohibited because they lack the behaviors to seek refuge from,and the physiology to tolerate,cold temperatures.As tropical Southeast Asia is the source of the Everglades Burmese pythons,we predict it is unlikely that they will be able to successfully expand to or colonize more temperate areas of Florida and adjoining states due to their lack of behavioral and physiological traits to seek refuge from cold temperatures.Elliott R.JACOBSON David G.BARKER Tracy M.BARKER Richard MAULDIN Michael L.AVERY Richard ENGEMAN Stephen SECOR 2012Integrative Zoology2012,7,3:0
