| 1 | Evaluation of Arctic Sea-ice Cover and Thickness Simulated by MITgcm显示文摘A regional Arctic Ocean configuration of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology General Circulation Model(MITgcm)is applied to simulate the Arctic sea ice from 1991 to 2012.The simulations are evaluated by comparing them with observations from different sources. The results show that MITgcm can reproduce the interannual and seasonal variability of the sea-ice extent, but underestimates the trend in sea-ice extent, especially in September. The ice concentration and thickness distributions are comparable to those from the observations, with most deviations within the observational uncertainties and less than 0.5 m,respectively. The simulated sea-ice extents are better correlated with observations in September, with a correlation coefficient of 0.95,than in March, with a correlation coefficient of 0.83.However,the distributions of sea-ice concentration are better simulated in March, with higher pattern correlation coefficients(0.98)than in September. When the model underestimates the atmospheric influence on the sea-ice evolution in March, deviations in the sea-ice concentration arise at the ice edges and are higher than those in September. In contrast, when the model underestimates the oceanic boundaries’influence on the September sea-ice evolution, disagreements in the distribution of the sea-ice concentration and its trend are found over most marginal seas in the Arctic Ocean. The uncertainties of the model, whereby it fails to incorporate the atmospheric information in March and oceanic information in September, contribute to varying model errors with the seasons. | Fei ZHENG Yue SUN Qinghua YANG Longjiang MU | 2021 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2021,38,1: | 1 |
| 2 | Regime shift of the dominant factor for halocline depth in the Canada Basin during 1990–2008显示文摘The World Ocean Database(WOD) is used to evaluate the halocline depth simulated by an ice-ocean coupled model in the Canada Basin during 1990–2008. Statistical results show that the simulated halocline is reliable.Comparing of the September sea ice extent between simulation and SSM/I dataset, a consistent interannual variability is found between them. Moreover, both the simulated and observed September sea ice extent show staircase declines in 2000–2008 compared to 1990–1999. That supports that the abrupt variations of the ocean surface stress curl anomaly in 2000–2008 are caused by rapid sea ice melting and also in favor of the realistic existence of the simulated variations. Responses to these changes can be found in the upper ocean circulation and the intermediate current variations in these two phases as well. The analysis shows that seasonal variations of the halocline are regulated by the seasonal variations of the Ekman pumping. On interannual time scale, the variations of the halocline have an inverse relationship with the ocean surface stress curl anomaly after 2000,while this relationship no longer applies in the 1990 s. It is pointed out that the regime shift in the Canada Basin can be derived to illustrate this phenomenon. Specifically, the halocline variations are dominated by advection in the 1990 s and Ekman pumping in the 2000 s respectively. Furthermore, the regime shift is caused by changing Transpolar Drift pathway and Ekman pumping area due to spatial deformation of the center Beaufort high(BH)relative to climatology. | MU Longjiang ZHAO Jinping ZHONG Wenli | 2017 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2017,36,1: | 1 |
| 3 | Regional characteristics of sea ice thickness in Canadian shelf and Arctic Archipelago measured by Ground Penetrating Radar显示文摘Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR) measurements of sea ice thickness including undeformed ice and ridged ice were carried out in the central north Canadian Archipelago in spring 2010. Results have shown a significant spatial heterogeneity of sea ice thickness across the shelf. The undeformed multi-year fast ice of(2.05±0.09) m thick was investigated southern inshore zone of Borden island located at middle of the observational section, which was the observed maximum thickness in the field work. The less thick sea ice was sampled across a flaw lead with the thicknesses of(1.05±0.11) m for the pack ice and(1.24±0.13) m for the fast ice. At the northernmost spot of the section, the undeformed multi-year pack ice was(1.54±0.22) m thick with a ridged ice of 2.5 to 3 m,comparing to the multi-year fast ice with the thickness of(1.67±0.16) m at the southernmost station in the Prince Gustaf Adolf Sea. | LI Tao ZHAO Jinping JIAO Yutian HOU Jiaqiang MU Longjiang | 2015 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2015,34,5: | 1 |
| 4 | Turbulent mixing above the Atlantic Water around the Chukchi Borderland in 2014显示文摘This study presents an analysis of the CTD data and the turbulent microstructure data collected in 2014, the turbulent mixing environment above the Atlantic Water(AW) around the Chukchi Borderland region is studied.Surface wind becomes more efficient in driving the upper ocean movement along with the rapid decline of sea ice, thus results in a more restless interior of the Arctic Ocean. The turbulent dissipation rate is in the range of4.60×10^(–10)^(–3.31×10^(–9) W/kg with a mean value of 1.33×10^(–9) W/kg, while the diapycnal diffusivity is in the range of1.45×10^(–6)–1.46×10^(–5)m^2/s with a mean value of 4.84×10^(–6) m^2/s in 200–300 m(above the AW). After investigating on the traditional factors(i.e., wind, topography and tides) that may contribute to the turbulent dissipation rate, the results show that the tidal kinetic energy plays a dominating role in the vertical mixing above the AW. Besides, the swing of the Beaufort Gyre(BG) has an impact on the vertical shear of the geostrophic current and may contribute to the regional difference of turbulent mixing. The parameterized method for the double-diffusive convection flux above the AW is validated by the direct turbulent microstructure results. | ZHONG Wenli GUO Guijun ZHAO Jinping LI Tao WANG Xiaoyu MU Longjiang | 2018 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2018,37,3: | 1 |
