| 1 | Water-use efficiency in response to simulated increasing precipitation in a temperate desert ecosystem of Xinjiang, China显示文摘Water-use efficiency(WUE) is a key plant functional trait that plays a central role in the global cycles of water and carbon. Although increasing precipitation may cause vegetation changes, few studies have explored the linkage between alteration in vegetation and WUE. Here, we analyzed the responses of leaf WUE, ecosystem carbon and water exchanges, ecosystem WUE, and plant community composition changes under normal conditions and also under extra 15% or 30% increases in annual precipitation in a temperate desert ecosystem of Xinjiang, China. We found that leaf WUE and ecosystem WUE showed inconsistent responses to increasing precipitation. Leaf WUE consistently decreased as precipitation increased. By contrast, the responses of the ecosystem WUE to increasing precipitation are different in different precipitation regimes: increasing by 33.9% in the wet year(i.e., the normal precipitation years)and decreasing by 4.1% in the dry year when the precipitation was about 30% less than that in the wet year.We systematically assessed the herbaceous community dynamics, community composition, and vegetation coverage to explain the responses of ecosystem WUE, and found that the between-year discrepancy in ecosystem WUE was consistent with the extent to which plant biomass was stimulated by the increase in precipitation. Although there was no change in the relative significance of ephemerals in the plant community, its greater overall plant biomass drove an increased ecosystem WUE under the conditions of increasing precipitation in 2011. However, the slight increase in plant biomass exerted no significant effect on ecosystem WUE in 2012. Our findings suggest that an alteration in the dominant species in this plant community can induce a shift in the carbon-and water-based economics of desert ecosystems. | HUANG Gang LI Yan MU Xiaohan ZHAO Hongmei CAO Yanfeng | 2017 | Journal of Arid Land2017,9,6: | 7 |
| 2 | Phase characterisation of metalenses显示文摘Metalenses have emerged as a new optical element or system in recent years, showing superior performance and abundant applications. However, the phase distribution of a metalens has not been measured directly up to now, hindering further quantitative evaluation of its performance. We have developed an interferometric imaging phase measurement system to measure the phase distribution of a metalens by taking only one photo of the interference pattern.Based on the measured phase distribution,we analyse the negative chromatic aberration effect of monochromatic metalenses and propose a feature size of metalenses.Different sensitivities of the phase response to wavelength between the Pancharatnam-Berry phase-based metalens and propagation phase-reliant metalens are directly observed in the experiment.Furthermore, through phase distribution analysis,it is found that the distance between the measured metalens and the brightest spot of focusing will deviate from the focal length when the metalens has a low nominal numerical aperture, even though the metalens is ideal without any fabrication error. We also use the measured phase distribution to quantitatively characterise the imaging performance of the metalens. Our phase measurement system will help not only designers optimise the designs of metalenses but also fabricants distinguish defects to improve the fabrication process, which will pave the way for metalenses in industrial applications. | Maoxiong Zhao Mu Ku Chen Ze-Peng Zhuang Yiwen Zhang Ang Chen Qinmiao Chen Wenzhe Liu Jiajun Wang Ze-Ming Chen Bo Wang Xiaohan Liu Haiwei Yin Shumin Xiao Lei Shi Jian-Wen Dong Jian Zi Din Ping Tsai | 2021 | Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,4: | 1 |
| 3 | Rapid and label-free classification of pathogens based on light scattering, reduced power spectral features and support vector machine显示文摘The rapid identification of pathogens is crucial in controlling the food quality and safety. The proposed system for the rapid and label-free identification of pathogens is based on the principle of laser scattering from the bacterial microbes. The clinical prototype consists of three parts:the laser beam, photodetectors, and the data acquisition system. The bacterial testing sample was mixed with 10 mL distilled water and placed inside the machine chamber. When the bacterial microbes pass by the laser beam, the scattering of light occurs due to variation in size, shape, and morphology.Due to this reason, different types of pathogens show their unique light scattering patterns. The photo-detectors were arranged at the surroundings of the sample at different angles to collect the scattered light. The photodetectors convert the scattered light intensity into a voltage waveform. The waveform features were acquired by using the power spectral characteristics, and the dimensionality of extracted features was reduced by applying minimal-redundancy-maximal-relevance criterion(mRMR).A support vector machine(SVM)classifier was developed by training the selected power spectral features for the classification of three different bacterial microbes. The resulting average identification accuracies of E.faecalis,E.coli and S.aureus were 99%,87%,and 94%,respectively.The ove rall experimental results yield a higher accuracy of 93.6%,indicating that the proposed device has the potential for label-free identification of pathogens with simplicity, rapidity, and cost-effectiveness. | Mubashir Hussain Zhen Chen Mu Lv Jingyi Xu Xiaohan Dong Jingzhou Zhao Song Li Yan Deng Nongyue He Zhiyang Li Bin Liu | 2020 | Chinese Chemical Letters2020,31,12: | 0 |
