Role of vitamin B12 deficiency in ischemic stroke risk and outcome显示文摘Currently, ischemic stroke is the most prevalent form of stroke compared to hemorrhagic and there is a high incidence in older adults.Nutrition is a modifiable risk factor for stroke.B-vitamins are part of a metabolic network that integrates nutritional signals with biosynthesis, redox homeostasis, and epigenetics. These vitamins play an essential role in the regulation of cell proliferation, stress resistance, and embryo development.A deficiency in vitamin B12 is common in older adults and has been reported to be implicated in ischemic stroke. The aim of this review was to investigate whether vitamin B12 deficiencies impact the risk and outcome of ischemic stroke.Clinical data from our literature review strongly suggest that a deficiency in vitamin B12 is a risk factor for ischemic stroke and possible outcome. Our survey of the literature has identified that there is a gap in the understanding of the mechanisms through which a vitamin B12 deficiency leads to an increased risk of stroke and outcome.A vitamin B12 deficiency can increase homocysteine levels, which are a well-established risk factor for ischemic stroke.Another potential mechanism through which vitamin B12 deficient may impact neurological function and increase risk of stroke,is changes in myelination, however this link requires further investigation.Further studies are required in model systems to understand how a vitamin B12 deficiency changes the brain. | Gyllian B.Yahn Jamie E.Abato Nafisa M.Jadavji | 2021 | Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,3: | 9
Role of behavioral training in reducing functional impairments after stroke显示文摘Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. There are two main types of stroke, hemorrhagic and ischemic.A hemorrhagic stroke is when there a bleed in the brain, whereas an ischemic stroke is the result of blockage of blood flow to the brain, which leads to degeneration, neurotoxicity, inflammation, and apoptosis. This damage not only affects the ischemic core, but also neuronal, astrocyte, and synaptic survival in the peri-infarct region and connected areas(Kerr et al.,2011;Jadavji et al.,2018).The prevalence of ischemic stroke is predicted to increase as the global population ages(Mukherjee and Patil,2011).Between 1970 and 2008 there has been a 100%increase in stroke incidence in low income countries. For example, the estimated losses in gross domestic product,as the result of vascular diseases, including stroke, have ranged from$20 million in Ethiopia to$1 billion in China and India(Mukherjee and Patil,2011). | Mahira Moftah Nafisa M.Jadavji | 2019 | Neural Regeneration Research2019,14,9: | 4

Systematic review on the use of autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis for the repair of articular cartilage defects in patients显示文摘AIM To systematically review the results of studies looking at autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis(AMIC) in humans. METHODS A literature search was performed, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines, to review any studies using such techniques in humans. Our initial search retrieved 297 articles listed on MEDLINE, Google Scholar, CINHal and EMBASE. From these studies, 15 studies meeting the eligibility criteria were selected and formed the basis of our systematic review.RESULTS The study designs, surgical techniques and outcome measures varied between the studies. Although all studies reported improvements in patient outcome measures, this was not necessarily correlated with magnetic resonance imaging findings. Although there were many additional procedures performed, when AMIC was performed in isolation, the results tended to peak at 24 mo before declining. CONCLUSION Although short-term studies suggest improved patient reported outcomes with a variety of scaffolds, surgical techniques and rehabilitation regimes, the literature remains equivocal on whether the defect size and location, and patient factors affect the outcome. Patientbenefit appears to be maintained in the short-tomedium term but more high level studies with extensive and robust validated outcome measures should be conducted to evaluate the medium-and long-term effect of the AMIC procedure. | Nafisa Shaikh Matthew K T Seah Wasim S Khan | 2017 | World Journal of Orthopedics2017,8,7: | 1

2D Carbon Fiber Reinforced High Density Polyethylene Multi-Layered Laminated Composite Panels:Structural,Mechanical,Thermal, and Morphological Profile显示文摘Carbon fiber reinforced high density polyethylene multi-layered laminated composite panels(HDPE/CF MLCP) with excellent in-plane properties along transverse direction have been formulated. Composite architectures with carbon fiber(CF) designed in 2D layout in conventional composites can alleviate their properties in thickness direction, but all attempts so far developed have achieved restrained success. Here,we have exposed an approach to the high strength composite challenge, without altering the 2D stack design on the basis of concept of fiber reinforced laminated composites that would provide enhanced mechanical and thermal properties along transverse direction. CF sheets allowed the buckling of adjoining plies in 2D MLCP. We fabricated 2D MLCP by stacking the alternative CF and HDPE layers under different loading conditions, which resulted in high strength composites. These plies of CF and HDPE served as unit cells for MLCP, with CF offering much-needed fracture toughness and hardness to these materials. For 2D HDPE/CF MLCP, we demonstrated noteworthy improvement in physical and chemical interaction between CF and HDPE, in-plane fracture strain, flexural strength(30.684 MPa), bending modulus(7436.254 MPa), thermal stability(40.94%), and surface morphology, upon increasing the CF layers up to twenty, enabling these composites truly for high temperature and high strength applications. | Shahzad Maqsood Khan Nafisa Gull Muhammad Azeem Munawar Atif Islam Saba Zia Muhammad Shafiq Aneela Sabir Syed Muhammad Awais Muhammad Arif Butt Muhammad Taqi Zahid Butt Tahir Jamil | 2016 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2016,32,10: | 1

Impact of increasing one-carbon metabolites on traumatic brain injury outcome using pre-clinical models显示文摘Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of death and disability worldwide, affecting over 69 million individuals yearly.One-carbon metabolism has been shown to have beneficial effects after brain damage, such as ischemic stroke. However, whether increasing one-carbon metabolite vitamins impacts traumatic brain injury outcomes in patients requires more investigation. The aim of this review is to evaluate how one-carbon metabolites impact outcomes after the onset of traumatic brain injury.PubMed,Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were searched for studies that examined the impact of B-vitamin supplementation on traumatic brain injury outcomes. The search terms included combinations of the following words:traumatic brain injury, dietary supplementation,one-carbon metabolism, and B-vitamins.The focus of each literature search was basic science data. The year of publication in the literature searches was not limited. Our analysis of the literature has shown that dietary supplementation of B-vitamins has significantly improved the functional and behavioral recove ry of animals with traumatic brain injury compared to controls.Howeve r,this improvement is dosage-dependent and is contingent upon the onset of supplementation and whether there is a sustained or continuous delive ry of vitamin supplementation post-traumatic brain injury. The details of supplementation post-traumatic brain injury need to be further investigated.Overall,we conclude that B-vitamin supplementation improves behavioral outcomes and reduces cognitive impairment post-traumatic brain injury in animal model systems.Further investigation in a clinical setting should be stro ngly considered in co njunction with current medical treatments for traumatic brain injury-affected individuals. | Sanika M.Joshi Theresa Currier Thomas Nafisa M.Jadavji | 2024 | Neural Regeneration Research2024,19,8: | 0
A critical review of the emerging research on the detection and assessment of microplastics pollution in the coastal, marine, and urban Bangladesh显示文摘The research on the extent and effects of microplastics pollution in the Global South is only getting started.Bangladesh is a South Asian country with one of the fastest growing economies in the world, however, such exponential economic growth has also increased the pollution threats to its natural and urban environment. In this paper,we reviewed the recent primary research on the assessment of the extent of microplastics pollution in Bangladesh.Fromthe online databases,we developed a compilation of emergingresearch articles that detected and quantified microplastics in different coastal, marine, and urban environments in Bangladesh. Most of the studies focused on the coastal environment(e.g.,beach sediment)and marine fish, while limited data were available for the urban environment. We also discussed the relationship of the type of anthropogenic activities with the observed microplastic pollution. The Cox's Bazar sea beach in south-east Bangladesh experienced microplastics pollution due to tourism activities, while fishing and other anthropogenic activities led to microplastics pollution in the Bay of Bengal. While microplastics larger than 1 mm were prevalent in the beach sediments, smaller microplastics with size below 0.5 mm were prevalent in marine fish samples. Moreover, the differences m microplastic abundance, size, shape, color, and polymer type found were depended on the sampling sites and relevant anthropogenic activities. It is imperative to identify majorsources of microplastics pollution in both natural and urban environment, determine potential environmental and human health effects, and develop mitigating and prevention strategies for reducing microplastics pollution. | Zaki Alam Pushan Ehsanur Rahman Nafisa Islam Nirupam Aich | 2022 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2022,16,10: | 0
Genetic and biochemical aspects of quorum sensing in the bacterial lifestyle and pathogenesis显示文摘Quorum sensing is the biochemical communication system within bacterial cells which may instigate their virulence factors, and hence,is imperative for pathogenesis.Such a system optimizes metabolic and behavioral activities played by the densely populated bacterial community as well as the production of the concomitant response against diffusible or secreted signals. Thus, the multi-layered signal transduction networks of quorum sensing help bacteria acclimatize to the disadvantages by increasing their confrontation ability aided by biofilm formation.Previous studies unraveled the impact of quorum sensing in the microbial interactions both within a single species and between several species. The development of the synthetic ecological models has added advantages in the studies of microbial sociability in natural habitats as well as aided in drug designing.Current review highlighted the up-to-date knowledge on the basic mechanisms of quorum sensing and its influence to accelerate the bacterial resistance against different environmental stimuli or synthetic drugs along with the factors affecting the quorum sensing system, and the harmful role of quorum sensing in food spoilage. The information gathered in this review would be beneficial to understand the metabolic cross talk as well as the virulence traits of the pathogenic microorganisms in course of their pathogenesis augmented by quorum sensing. | Nafisa Tabassum Syed Abdullah Ibn Asaduzzaman AKM Ashik Ullah Afia Ibnat Ava Rahmatur Rob Kawnain Rabib Hasan Mahin Faiqa Samrose Sezen Rashed Noor | 2021 | Life Research2021,4,2: | 0
Maternal dietary deficiencies in folic acid or choline worsen stroke outcomes in adult male and female mouse offspring显示文摘Maternal one-carbon metabolism plays an important role in early life programming. There is a well-established connection between the fetal environment and the health status of the offspring.Howeve r,there is a knowledge gap on how maternal nutrition impacts stro ke outcomes in offspring. The aim of our study was to investigate the role of maternal dietary deficiencies in folic acid or choline on stroke outcomes in 3-month-old offspring.Adult female mice were fed a folic acid-deficient diet,choline-deficient diet,or control diet 4 weeks before pregnancy. They we re continued on diets during pregnancy and la ctation.Male and female offspring were weaned onto a control diet and at 2 months of age were subjected to ischemic stroke within the sensorimotor cortex via photothrombotic damage.Mothers maintained on either a folic acid-deficient diet or choline-deficient diet had reduced levels of S-adenosylm ethionine in the liver and S-adenosylhomocysteine in the plasma. After ischemic stro ke,motor function was impaired in 3-month-old offspring from mothers receiving either a folic acid-deficient diet or choline-deficient diet compared to the animals receiving a control diet.In brain tissue, there was no difference in ischemic damage volume. When protein levels were assessed in ischemic brain tissue, there were lower levels of active caspase-3 and hypoxia-inducible factor 1α in males compared to females and betaine levels were reduced in offspring from the mothers receiving a choline-deficient diet. Our results demonstrate that a deficient maternal diet at critical time points in neurodevelopment results in worse stro ke outcomes. This study emphasizes the importance of maternal diet and the impact it can have on offspring health. | McCoy Clementson Lauren Hurley Sarah Coonrod Calli Bennett Purvaja Marella Agnes S.Pascual Kasey Pull Brandi Wasek Teodoro Bottiglieri Olga Malysheva Marie A.Caudill Nafisa M.Jadavji | 2023 | Neural Regeneration Research2023,18,11: | 0
