| 1 | An alternative treatment process for upgrade of petroleum refinery wastewater using electrocoagulation显示文摘An electrocoagulation treatment process was developed for treatment and upgrade of petroleum refinery effluent (wastewater), instead of the conventional methods, which can consume higher amounts of chemicals and produce larger amounts of sludge. The effect of the operation parameters, such as current density, initial pH, anode material, anode dissolution, energy consumption and electrolysis time, on treatment efficiency was investigated. The experimental results showed that the effluent can be effectively treated under optimal conditions. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis of the effluent, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) of the sludge produced, revealed that the unwanted pollutants can be eliminated. | 2 | Experimental study on behaviors of polypropylene fibrous concrete beams显示文摘Synthetic fibers made from nylon or polypropylene have gained application when loose and woven into geo textile form although no information on the matrix’s mechanical performance is obtained so that more understanding of their structural contribution to resist cracking can be determined. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation to determine the performance characteristics of concrete reinforced with a polypropylene structural fiber. In this investigation “Fiber mesh” brand of fibers manufactured by SL Concrete System, Tennessee, USA and marketed by M/S Millennium Building System, Inc., Ban-galore, India are used. The lengths of the fibers used were 24 mm. Fiber dosages used were 0.9, 1.8, 2.7 kg/m3. A total of three mixtures, one for each fiber dosage were made. A standard slump cone test was conducted on the fresh concrete mix with and without fibers to determine the workability of the mix. The test program included the evaluation of hardened concrete properties such as compressive, split tensile, modulus of rupture and flexural strengths. The increase in compressive strength is about 36.25%, 26.20%, and 23.75% respectively that of plain concrete. This increase in strength was directly proportional to amount of fibers present in the mix. The increase in flexural strength for Mixes I^III is about 21%, 16.6%, and 23% respectively that of plain concrete specimens. An experimental investigation was also made to study the behaviors of reinforced fibers concrete beams (with longitudinal reinforcements) under two-point loading. The deflection and crack patterns were also studied. The improvements in strength and ductility characteristics were discussed. | SUJI D. NATESAN S. C. | 4 | Rapid adsorption of toxic Pb(Ⅱ) ions from aqueous solution using multiwall carbon nanotubes synthesized by microwave chemical vapor deposition technique显示文摘Multiwall carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) were synthesized using a tubular microwave chemical vapor deposition technique, using acetylene and hydrogen as the precursor gases and ferrocene as catalyst. The novel MWCNT samples were tested for their performance in terms of Pb(Ⅱ)binding. The synthesized MWCNT samples were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared(FT-IR), Brunauer, Emmett and Teller(BET), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy(FESEM) analysis, and the adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) was studied as a function of p H,initial Pb(Ⅱ) concentration, MWCNT dosage, agitation speed, and adsorption time, and process parameters were optimized. The adsorption data followed both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. On the basis of the Langmuir model, Qmaxwas calculated to be 104.2 mg/g for the microwave-synthesized MWCNTs. In order to investigate the dynamic behavior of MWCNTs as an adsorbent, the kinetic data were modeled using pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order equations. Different thermodynamic parameters, viz., ΔH0, ΔS0and ΔG0were evaluated and it was found that the adsorption was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The statistical analysis revealed that the optimum conditions for the highest removal(99.9%) of Pb(Ⅱ) are at p H 5, MWCNT dosage 0.1 g, agitation speed 160 r/min and time of 22.5 min with the initial concentration of 10 mg/L. GRG1 (KT235640) from brown algae against MDR strains of uropathogens显示文摘Our study is to evaluate the potential bioactive compound of Nocardiopsis sp.GRG1(KT235640)and its antibacterial activity against multi drug resistant strains(MDRS)on urinary tract infections(UTIs).Two brown algae samples were collected and were subjected to isolation of endophytic actinomycetes.100 strains of actinomycetes were isolated from algal samples based on observation of morphology and physiological characters.40 strains were active in antagonistic activity against various clinical pathogens.Among the strains,10 showed better antimicrobial activity against MDRS on UTIs.The secondary metabolite of Nocardiopsis sp.GRG1(KT235640)has showed tremendous antibacterial activity against UTI pathogens compared to other strains.Influence of various growth parameters were used for synthesis of secondary metabolites,such as optimum pH 7,incubation time 5e7 days,temperature(30C),salinity(5%),fructose and mannitol as the suitable carbon and nitrogen sources.At 100 μg/ml concentration MIC of Nocardiopsis sp.GRG1(KT235640)showed highest percentage of inhibition against Proteus mirabilis(85%),and E.coli,Staphylococcus auerues,Psuedomonas aeroginasa,Enterobactor sp and Coagulinase negative staphylococci 78e85%respectively. | Govindan Rajivgandhi Ramachandran Vijayan Marikani Kannan Malairaja Santhanakrishnan Natesan Manoharan | 2016 | Bioactive Materials2016,1,2: | 2 |
