| 1 | Drug-related problems among type II diabetes mellitus patients with hypertension: a cross-sectional study显示文摘Patients with type II diabetes mellitus(T2DM)and hypertension(HTN)are at increased threat for long experiencing various problems related to medicine as they frequently received different medications for managing their condition.Recently,there were no studies done locally on drug-related problems(DRPs)among T2DM patients with HTN.Thus,this study aims to assess the DRPs among T2DM patients with HTN admitted at Kibuye Referral Hospital(KRH).DRPs were drug safety problems,drug effectiveness problems and other drug problems.Methods:A retrospective cross-sectional study involved patients'files with T2DM and HTN,who were admitted at KRH from January 2013 to December 2017.The identification and classification of DRPs were based on pharmaceutical care network Europe(PCNE)classification system version 8.02.A simple random sampling technique was used to choose study participants from the target population.Data that met inclusion and exclusion criteria were analyzed using STATA version 13.The Fisher exact test(bivariate analysis)and logistic regression(multivariate)were used to test association and p-value≤0.05 was considered as statistically significant.An adjusted odd ratio(AOR)with a confidence interval(CI)of 95% was determined using binary logistic regression.Results:Findings revealed that the prevalence of DRPs was 81.29%(313/385)and most of them each patient had at least two DRPs(69.05%).The patients aged above 55 years old were more likely to develop DRPs than those with age below 35 years(AOR=1.2;P=0.02;95%CI:0.2-2.3).Nevertheless,there was no significant association between DRPs and middle age(between 35 and 54 age of old).The patients who consumed more than or equal to 5 drugs were 2.4 times more likely to develop DRPs than those who took the number of medicines less than 5(AOR=15.4;P<0.001;95%CI:8.8-26.8).Also,traditional medicines use(AOR=1.9;P=0.016;95%CI:1.1-3.5)and having drug-related complication(AOR=2.4;P<0.001;95%CI:1.9-3)had shown significant associations.The total causes of DRPs identified were 1626 and most causes of DRPs were arisen from drug use(45.01%)and prescribing(37.83%).The drug/dose selections were the most frequent causes of DRPs(36.97%).Conclusion:Since the prevalence of DRPs were relatively high,various factors influencing DRPs were established and most causes of DRPs were arising from drug use&drug prescribing among T2DM patients with HTN.Early detection needed to enhance patient’s life quality.Conducting studies in other hospitals needed to establish the national planning of DRPs to eradicate DRPs among patients T2DM with HTN. | Joseph Nzayisenga Nicholas Njau Ngomi John Nyiligira | 2020 | Life Research2020,3,1: | 2 |
| 2 | Clinical study on prevalence and social determinants of postoperative infection at Kiziguro District Hospital, Rwanda显示文摘Background:Cesarean delivery is the commonest surgical procedure carried out worldwide in maternity.Cesarean delivery is accompanied by many complications among which surgical site infection is the most frequent.Surgical site infection is the second cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in the postpartum period after postpartum haemorrhage.Social factors,such as health insurance,may have an impact on different maternal morbidities and quality of care for pregnant women attending health facilities.The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence and factors associated with surgical site infection following caesarean delivery at Kiziguro District Hospital.Methods:It was the facility-based retrospective cross-sectional study.The sample size of 414 women was simply and randomly selected from 1001 women who underwent caesarean section from January 2018 to December 2018.Results:The prevalence of surgical site infection was 7.7%and its associated factors were the absence of health insurance and meconium-stained amniotic fluid.Women with health insurance were 99%(adjusted odds ratio:0.01,95%confidence interval:0.001–0.201)less likely to develop surgical site infections compared to women without health insurance,while women with clear amniotic fluid were 98.6%less likely to acquire surgical site infections(adjusted odds ratio:0.014,95%confidence interval:0.002–0.128)compared to women with meconiumstained amniotic fluid.Conclusion:surgical site infections prevalence among women delivered by cesarean section at Kiziguro District Hospital was found to be significant and women without health insurance and those with meconium-stained amniotic fluid are most vulnerable thus,infection and prevention control policymaker at the facility and national level are advised to assess at large all social barriers to health service accessibility and include them in their infection and prevention control policy.Kiziguro District Hospital is advised to take infection and prevention control precaution for women without health insurance and women with meconium-stained amniotic fluid. | Mbayire Vedaste Kagimbangabo Jean Marie Vianey Habtu Micheal Ngomi Nicholas Njau | 2020 | Life Research2020,3,3: | 0 |
| 3 | Social and physical factors influencing malaria incidence among farmers in Bugesera District, Rwanda显示文摘Background:In Rwanda,farmers experience health problems due to the consistency increase in mosquitoes which bring about malaria incidence.We researched to realize if there is malaria occurrence among farmers and to assess the factors associated with malaria occurrence among farmers.Methods:In 2019,data collected was done through a descriptive cross-sectional study design among farmers,health center workers and community health workers in rural.A sample of 384 respondents was used to respond the structured questionnaires.We used an interview guide to key informant respondents to support other information related to malaria occurrence.Results:Within 3 months before data collection,342(89.1%)of respondents have had malaria.Multivariate analysis shows that males were highly infected(AoR=19.60;95%CI:9.049–42.452).Those with no formal education(AoR=11.10;95%CI:3.128–39.433)demonstrated high incidence.Farmers aged 15 to 25 years(AoR=13.44;95%CI:5.257–34.358)were highly infected compared to those aged 37 to 47 years.Concerning the household size,4–6 members(AoR=5.97;95%CI:1.919–18.574)showed higher incidence than those above eight members.Public servants(AoR=7.00;95%CI:2.669–18.394)were highly infected compared with traders.Farmers with a monthly income of 0–50,000 rwf(AoR=6.65;95%CI:2.079–21.324)were significantly associated with malaria occurrence.Conclusion:Higher prevalence of malaria was observed among farmers in Bugesera District.Three hundred and forty-two respondents(89.1%)have had malaria within 3 months before data collection.The use of mosquito nets was highlighted by 119(31%)of respondents.Encouraging farming direction can help to reduce malaria as indicated by 81(21.1%)of respondents while using insecticide-spray was helpful as indicated by 172(44.8%)of respondents. | Mfashwanayo Cyriaque Nicholas Ngomi Mochama Monica Rutayisire Erigene | 2020 | Life Research2020,3,3: | 0 |
| 4 | Determinants of inequality in health care seeking for childhood illnesses:insights from Nairobi informal settlements显示文摘Background:An in-depth understanding of patterns of inequities in healthcare seeking among the urban residents is critical in identifying appropriate interventions strategies.The study evaluates determinants of inequality in health care seeking for childhood illnesses among informal settlement residents in Nairobi,Kenya.Methods:Data from the second Nairobi Cross-Sectional Slum Survey(NCSS 2012)was examined.The inequality in seeking health care for childhood diarrhea as the prototype illness was assessed using concentration index(CI).The wealth index based on the household possessions and amenities was used as a measure for socioeconomic status.Results:A total of 2027 qualified women were included in this study.About 16.6% of children born of younger mothers aged<20 years had diarrhea and a similar proportion of children(16.3%)was observed among mothers who were unemployed.The CI of-0.026 on health care seeking for diarrhea among children points to significant inequality among the urban poor(95% confidence interval:-0.028 to-0.023).Conclusion:Occupation of parents,age of mothers,ethnicity,marital status and children's age were major deter-minants with regard to disease outcome and to a broader extent inequality in health care seeking for childhood illnesses.Enhanced bottom top community health invigoration strategies in health information awareness and services access would be instrumental. | Nicholas Ngomi Christopher Khayeka-Wandabwa Thaddaeus Egondi Pamela AMarinda Tilahun Nigatu Haregu | 2022 | Global Health Journal2022,6,4: | 0 |
| 5 | Predisposing factors of neonatal morbidity in Gicumbi District, Rwanda显示文摘Rwanda has registered tremendous achievements in the health sector.However,neonatal morbidity remains high in some areas.This study aims to determine the prevalence and predisposing factors of neonatal morbidity in the Gicumbi District.Methods:The study was a retrospective,cross-sectional study.Overall population of interest comprised 349 neonates.Quantitative data were collected using a pre-tested data extraction tool which comprised of general characteristics of mothers and neonates,social factors,medical insurance and physiological factors.Results:The study found that the prevalence of neonatal morbidity is 28.4%.Bivariate analysis shows that 8 variables were statistically significant with neonatal morbidity.In multivariable analysis,factors identified as statistically associated with neonatal morbidity were mothers who did not have any antenatal care during pregnancy(AOR=5.3;95%CI=−1.313–22.118,P<0.019).Conclusion:Prevalence of neonatal morbidity was significant among neonates born in Gicumbi District and mothers who did not have any antenatal care during pregnancy are most vulnerable.Thus,public health staff,leaders at the facility,and national level are advised to assess all barriers and enablers of Antenatal care coverage. | Corneille Killy Ntihabose Nicholas Ngomi | 2021 | Life Research2021,4,1: | 0 |
