12Cetacean occurrence and diversity in whale-watching waters off Mirissa,Southern Sri Lanka显示文摘Scientific information is vital to the conservation of cetaceans and the management of whale-watching activities. The southern coastal waters of Sri Lanka are near a narrow continental shelf and biologically abundant in cetacean species.Although the occurrence of cetaceans has been investigated in certain waters of Sri Lanka, few surveys have been conducted along the southern coast. To fill this gap,we conducted boat-based surveys from January to May 2017 to investigate the occurrence, diversity, and behavior of cetaceans in the waters off Mirissa, covering a survey area of 788.9 km2.During 55 survey days,we recorded a total of 242 cetacean sightings and identified at least 9 species(3 mysticetes and 6 odontocetes). The blue whale was the most common mysticete species(167 of 174 mysticete encounters),followed by the Omura’s whale(4 of 174)and Bryde’s whale(3 of 174).The spinner dolphin was the most common odontocete species(28 of 68 odontocete encounters),followed by the sperm whale(18 of 68),common bottlenose dolphin(13 of 68),short-finned pilot whale(5 of 68),melon-headed whale(2 of 68),and killer whale.Blue whales and sperm whales exhibited a clear preference for outer shelf and high slope areas, and blue whales were observed feeding along these waters. The present study provides near-baseline information on cetacean occurrence and diversity in whale-watching waters off southern Sri Lanka, and highlights the urgent need for proper management strategies for whale-watching activities.Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Rajitha SANKALPA Elle Pathirathnalage Darshana Nuwan THILAKARATHNE Wenzhi LIN Vidusanka THILAKANAYAKA Chathurika Piumi KUMARASINGHE Mingming LIU Mingli LIN Songhai LI 2021Integrative Zoology2021,16,4:0
13Arsenic removal from water and soils using pristine and modified biochars显示文摘Arsenic(As)is recognized as a persistent and toxic contaminant in the environment that is harmful to humans.Biochar,a porous carbonaceous material with tunable functionality, has been used widely as an adsorbent for remediating As-contaminated water and soils.Several types of pristine and modified biochar are available, and significant efforts have been made toward modifying the surface of biochars to increase their adsorption capacity for As.Adsorption capacity is influenced by multiple factors, including biomass pyrolysis temperature,pH,the presence of dissolved organic carbon, surface charge, and the presence of phosphate, silicate, sulfate, and microbial activity.Improved As adsorption in modified biochars is attributed to several mechanisms including surface complexation/precipitation,ion exchange, oxidation, reduction, electrostatic interactions, and surface functional groups that have a relatively higher affinity for As.Modified biochars show promise for As adsorption;however, further research is required to improve the performance of these materials. For example, modified biochars must be eco-friendly,cost-effective,reliable,efficient,and sustainable to ensure their widespread application for immobilizing As in contaminated water and soils.Conducting relevant research to address these issues relies on a thorough understanding of biochar modifications to date. This study presents an in-depth review of pristine and modified biochars, including their production, physicochemical properties, and As adsorption mechanisms.Furthermore,a comprehensive evaluation of biochar applications is provided in As-contaminated environments as a guide for selecting suitable biochars for As removal in the field.Wei Zhang Yoora Cho Meththika Vithanage Sabry M.Shaheen Jörg Rinklebe Daniel S.Alessi Chia-Hung Hou Yohey Hashimoto Piumi Amasha Withana Yong Sik Ok 2022Biochar2022,4,1:0
14Differentiating Postmortem Claw Marks by the Asian Water Monitor(Kabaragoya)from Antemortem Sharp Weapon Trauma Based on the Injury Pattern显示文摘The Asian water monitor(Varanussalvator)or kabaragoya isthe predominant large animalscavenger of human remainsin Sri Lanka;however, its significance is rarely discussed in the forensic literature. This is the case of a 54‑year‑old male with a history of dementia, depression, and wandering behavior whose body was found, partially submerged in a river,2 days after he was reported missing. There were several linear wounds with regular margins over his arms and face which raised the suspicion of homicidal sharp weapon trauma. The injuries were seen in clusters and did not involve harder structures such as tendons, ligaments,or bones. There were no signs of inflammation or bleeding. They were attributed to kabaragoya claw marks, which are postmortem artifacts that mimic incised wounds. However, there were no areas of tissue loss to indicate that the animal had begun feeding on the corpse. This case discusses the problems faced by medicolegal investigators when encountering this phenomenon which is relatively underreported in the forensic literature.Piumi Dileka Chiranthika Madhupoorni A.Gunathilaka Thilinika Ranchamali Sameera A.Gunawardena 2022Journal of Forensic Science and Medicine2022,8,3:0
