Larvicidal and repellent potential of Moringa oleifera against malarial vector,Anopheles stephensi Liston(Insecta:Diptera:Culicidae)显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the larvicidal and pupicidal potential of the methanolic extracts from Moringa oleifera(M.oleifera) plant seeds against malarial vector Anopheles stephensi(A.stephensi) mosquitoes at different concentrations(20,40,60,80 and 100 ppm).Methods:M.oleifera was collected from the area of around Bharathiar University,Coimbatore. The dried plant materials were powdered by an electrical blender. From each sample,100 g of the plant material were extracted with 300 mL of methanol for 8 h in a Soxhlet apparatus. The extracts were evaporated to dryness in rotary vacuum evaporator to yield 122 mg and 110 mg of dark greenish material(residue) from Arcang amara and Ocimum basilicum, respectively. One gram of the each plant residue was dissolved separately in 100 mL of acetone(stock solution) from which different concentrations, i.e.,20,40,60,80 and 100 ppm were prepared. Results:Larvicidal activity of M.oleifera exhibited in the first to fourth instar larvae of the A.stephensi, and the LC_(50) and LC_(90) values were 57.79 ppm and 125.93 ppm for the first instar,63.90 ppm and 133.07 ppm for the second inslar,72.45 ppm and 139.82 ppm for the third instar,78.93 ppm and 143.20 ppm for the fourth instar, respectively. During the pupal stage the methanolic extract of M.oleifera showed that the LC_(50),and LC_(90) values were 67.77 ppm and 141.00 ppm, respectively. Conclusions:The present study indicates that the phytochemicals derived from M.oleifera seeds extracts are effective mosquito vector control agents and the plant extracts may be used for further integrated pest management programs. | Prabhu K Murugan K Nareshkumar A Ramasubramanian N Bragadeeswaran S | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,2: | 19
Anti-diabetic activity of quercetin extracted from Phyllanthus emblica L.fruit: In silico and in vivo approaches显示文摘In this study, molecular interactions of the ligands, quercetin, gallic acid, and metformin with various diabetes mellitus-related protein targets, such as glycogen phosphorylase and peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor gamma, were assessed. It was revealed that quercetin possesses good binding affinity to both targets. Quercetin is a major constituent of methanolic extracts of Phyllanthus emblica fruit. The antihyperglycemic effect of quercetin in streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats was examined. The isolated quercetin administered at a dose of 75 mg/kg body weight produced a maximum decrease of14.78% in blood glucose levels in the diabetic rats after 7 days of treatment. Furthermore, quercetin doses of 50 and 75 mg/kg were shown to significantly improve the profiles of triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, very-low-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and total cholesterol at the end of the study in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The administration of quercetin(25, 50, and 75 mg/kg body weight)daily for 28 days in STZ-induced diabetic rats resulted in a significant decrease in blood glucose and urine sugar levels, with a considerable rise in plasma insulin and hemoglobin levels. Therefore, quercetin is a potential drug with antidiabetic and antihyperglycemic action mediated by changes in the levels of glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides as indicated by in silico and in vivo studies. | Prabhu Srinivasan S.Vijayakumar Swaminathan Kothandaraman Manogar Palani | 2018 | Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2018,8,2: | 18
Ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma following chemoembolization:a western experience显示文摘BACKGROUND: Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a recommended first line therapy for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Serious complications such as neutropenic sepsis and hepatic decompensation are well known, but rupture of HCC following TACE is a rare and potentially fatal complication. The aim of this study was to identify the incidence of ruptured HCC following TACE and the associated risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed using our liver database with 'chemoembolization', 'ruptured HCC' covering the patients who received chemoembolization from January 1995 to December 2005. There were no exclusions. RESULTS: A total of 294 patients received chemoemboliza- tion in 530 sessions during the 10-year period. Of these, 2 ruptured following treatment (incidence 0.68%). The mean age was 65 years and the interval between the treatment and rupture was 2 and 24 days. The common factors were male sex, large tumor size (range 11-13 cm), and exophytic tumor growth. One patient died 2 days after rupture with hepatic decompensation while the second is alive after a 6-month follow up without tumor recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Ruptured HCC following TACE is a rare but serious complication. Large tumor size, male sex, and exophytic growth of tumor may be predisposing factors for rupture. | Narendra Battula Parthi Srinivasan Mansoor Madanur Srinivas Prabhu Chava Oliver Priest Mohamed Rela Nigel Heaton | 2007 | Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2007,6,1: | 17
Retinopathy of prematurity: Past, present and future显示文摘Retinopathy of prematurity(ROP) is a vasoproliferative disorder of the retina occurring principally in new born preterm infants. It is an avoidable cause of childhood blindness. With the increase in the survival of preterm babies, ROP has become the leading cause of preventable childhood blindness throughout the world. A simple screening test done within a few weeks after birth by an ophthalmologist can avoid this preventable blindness. Although screening guidelines and protocols are strictly followed in the developed nations, it lacks in developing economies like India and China, which have the highest number of preterm deliveries in the world. The burden of this blindness in these countries is set to increase tremendously in the future, if corrective steps are not taken immediately. ROP first emerged in 1940 s and 1950 s, when it was called retrolental fibroplasia. Several epidemics of this disease were and are still occurring in different regions of the world and since then a lot of research has been done on this disease. However, till date very few comprehensive review articles covering all the aspects of ROP are published. This review highlights the past, present and future strategies in managing this disease. It would help the pediatricians to update their current knowledge on ROP. | Parag K Shah Vishma Prabhu Smita S Karandikar Ratnesh Ranjan Venkatapathy Narendran Narendran Kalpana | 2016 | World Journal of Clinical Pediatrics2016,5,1: | 13
Studies on the effect of weld defect on the fatigue behavior of welded structures显示文摘Structural integrity isstated as the science and technology of margin between safety and disaster. Systematic prediction of structural integrity of critical structures such ascombustion chambers, pressure vessels, nuclear reactor components, boilers etc.,ensures the human safety, environmental protection, and the economical considerations. The present work aims at prediction of fatigue behaviour of symmetric structures like pressure vessels in the presence of common welding defects such as lack of fusion( LOF),lack of penetration( LOP) and porosity.A ring type specimen which replicates the stress pattern in thepressure vessel is considered for the study of severity of weld imperfections. Initial dimensions of weld defects are arrived by performing NDT inspection.Crack growth analysis is carried out to determine the remaining life of the welded joint with defects. | Ramu Murugan Prabhu Raja Venugobal Thyla Pudukkarai Ramaswami Sathiskumar Jothi Somu Chinnusamy | 2018 | China Welding2018,27,1: | 12
Plasticized Polymer Electrolyte Membranes Based on PEO/PVdF-HFP for Use as an Effective Electrolyte in Lithium-ion Batteries显示文摘Plasticized polymer electrolytes were prepared using poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)/poly(vinylidene fluoridehexafluoro propylene)(PVd F-HFP) with lithium perchlorate(Li Cl O4) and different plasticizers. XRD and FTIR spectroscopic techniques were used to characterize the structure and the complexation of plasticizer with the host polymer matrix. The role of interaction between polymer hosts and plasticizer on conductivity is discussed using the results of alternating current(a.c.) impedance studies. TG-DTA and SEM were used for thermal and physical characterizations. Maximum ionic conductivity(3.26 × 10^(-4) S·cm^(-1)) has been observed for ethylene carbonate(EC)-based polymer electrolytes. Electrochemical performance of the plasticized polymer electrolyte is evaluated in LiFePO_4/plasticized polymer electrolytes(PPEs)/Li coin cell. Good performance with low capacity fading on charge discharge cycling is demonstrated. | pradeepa prabakaran ramesh prabhu manimuthu sowmya gurusamy edwinraj sebasthiyan | 2017 | Chinese Journal of Polymer Science2017,35,3: | 7
Trigonelline protects the cardiocyte from hydrogen peroxide induced apoptosis in H9c2 cells显示文摘Objective:To elucidate the key parameters associated with hydrogen peroxide induced oxidative stress and investigates the mechanism of trigonelline(TG)for reducing the H_2O_2induced toxicity in H9c2 cells. Methods:Cytotoxicity and antioxidant activity of TG was assessed by EZ-CYTOX kit.RNA extraction and cDNA synthesized according to the kit manufacture protocol.Apoptosis was measured by the Flowcytometry, general PCR and qPCR.Results:It was found that the TG significantly rescued the morphology of the H9c2 cells.Treatment of cells with TG attenuated H_2O_2 induced cell deaths and improved the antioxidant activity. In addition,TG regulated the apoptotic gene caspase-3,caspase-9 and anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-2.Bcl-XL during H_2O_2 induced oxidative stress in H9c2 cells. These results were comparable with quercetin treatment. For evident, flow cytometer results also confirmed the TG significantly reduced the H_2O_2 induced necrosis and apoptosis in H9c2 cells. However, further increment of TG concentration against H_2O_2 could induce the necrosis and apoptosis along with H_2O_2.Conclusions:It is suggested that less than 125μM of TG could protect the cells from H_2O_2 induced cell damage by down regulating the caspases and up regulating the Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL expression. Therefore,we suggest the trigonelline could be useful for treatment of oxidative stress mediated cardiovascular diseases in future. | Soundharrajan Ilavenil Da Hye Kim Young-Il Jeong Mariadhas Valan Arasu Mayakrishnan Vijayakumar Ponnuraj Nagendra Prabhu Srisesharam Srigopalram Ki Choon Choi | 2015 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2015,8,4: | 6
Evaluation of antiinflammatory activity of Tephrosia purpurea in rats显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antiinflammatory activity of orally administered ethanolic extract of Tephrosia purpurea in acute and subacute inflammation in rats. Methods:An ethanolic extract of Tephrosia purpurea was prepared.Carrageenan induced paw edema and cotton pellet granuloma were the models for acute and subacute inflammation respectively.Four groups of rats in each model were treated orally with 2%gum acacia,100 mg /kg of aspirin,500 mg/kg and 1 000 mg/kg of ethanolic extract of Tephrosia purpurea respectively. In carrageenan induced paw edema model, subplantar injection of 1%carrageenan was made into the hind paw of the rats sixty minutes after the administration of the respective drugs. The paw volume was measured immediately after injection of carrageenan,at 3 hours and at 6 hours. Then percentage inhibition of edema was calculated. In the cotton pellet granuloma model, animals were administered drugs for six days after placing cotton pellets in the axilla on each side.On the 7th day,dry weight of granuloma was calculated. Results:The rats treated with Tephrosia purpurea did not exhibit any significant decrease in paw volume and serum ceruloplasmin levels as compared to the control and aspirin treated groups in the acute inflammation model;while, there was a significant(P < 0.01) decrease in the weight of granuloma in Tephrosia purpurea and aspirin treated groups as compared to control in subacute inflammation. Conclusions:The ethanolic extract of orally administered Tephrosia purpurea shows significant antiinflammatory effect in subacute inflammation but not in acute inflammation in rats. | Shenoy Smita Shwetha K Prabhu K Maradi R Bairy KL Shanbhag T | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,3: | 5

| T Umadevi S Prakash U K Bandopadhyay P C Mahapatra M Prabhu Madhu Ranjan | 2010 | 世界钢铁2010,,1: | 4
Automation of immunohistochemical evaluation in breast cancer using image analysis显示文摘AIM:To automate breast cancer diagnosis and to study the inter-observer and intra-observer variations in the manual evaluations.METHODS:Breast tissue specimens from sixty cases were stained separately for estrogen receptor(ER),progesterone receptor(PR)and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2(HER-2/neu).All cases were assessed by manual grading as well as image analysis. The manual grading was performed by an experienced expert pathologist. To study inter-observer and intra-observer variations,we obtained readings from another pathologist as the second observer from a different laboratory who has a little less experience than the first observer. We also took a second reading from the second observer to study intra-observer variations.Image analysis was carried out using in-house developed software(TissueQuant).A comparison of the results from image analysis and manual scoring of ER,PR and HER-2/neu was also carried out.RESULTS:The performance of the automated analysis in the case of ER,PR and HER-2/neu expressions was compared with the manual evaluations. The performance of the automated system was found to correlate well with the manual evaluations. The inter-observer variations were measured using Spearman correlation coefficient r and 95%confidence interval. In the case of ER expression,Spearman correlation r=0.53,in the case of PR expression,r=0.63,and in the case of HER-2/neu expression,r=0.68.Similarly,intra-observer variations were also measured. In the case of ER,PR and HER-2/neu expressions,r=0.46,0.66 and 0.70,respectively.CONCLUSION:The automation of breast cancer diagnosis from immunohistochemically stained specimens is very useful for providing objective and repeatable evaluations. | Keerthana Prasad Avani Tiwari Sandhya Ilanthodi Gopalakrishna Prabhu Muktha Pai | 2011 | World Journal of Clinical Oncology2011,2,4: | 3
Prominent catalytic activity of mesoporous molecular sieves in the vapor phase dehydration of cyclohexanol to cyclohexene显示文摘Cerium incorporated KIT-6 mesoporous materials were synthesized through direct hydrothermal method and characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen sorption isotherm (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), inductively coupled plasma -atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (DRS-UV-Vis), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. It appeared that stable cerium ions were inserted into the silica framework of KIT-6, thus generating acid properties in their host materials. The catalytic activity of Ce-KIT-6 materials was evaluated in the vapor phase dehydration of cyclohexanol to cyclohexene and dicyclohexyl ether at different temperatures with various Si/Ce molar ratios. Ce-KIT-6 (25) showed higher activity with 54% cyclohexanol conversion and 64% selectivity to cyclohexene. The catalytic results indicated that Ce-KIT-6 mesoporous materials could be used as versatile and stable acid catalysts. | Azhagapillai Prabhu Ahmed Al Shoaibi Chandrasekar Srinivasakannan Muthaiahpillai Palanichamy Velayutham Murugesan | 2013 | Journal of Rare Earths2013,31,5: | 3
Antimicrobial and hemolytic activity of fish epidermal mucus Cynoglossus arel and Arius caelatus显示文摘Objective:To study the antimicrobial, hemolytic activity and immunomodulatory activity of fish epidermal mucus and their chemical constituents from Cynoglossus arel(C.arel) and Alius caelatus(A.caelatus).Mucus plays an important role in the prevention of colonization by parasites, bacteria and fungi. Methods:Epidermal mucus was obtained from two marine fishes, lyophilized and the chemical composition of epidermal mucus was analysed by FT-IR analysis. The in vitro antimicrobial activity against human pathogens(fungi, gram positive and gram-negative bacteria) and also the hemolytic activity and immunomodulatory activity were determined. Results:Totally ten human pathogens were tested against the fish mucus.Out of the ten pathogens, five pathogens have proved to be sensitive to the mucus.Maximum zone of inhibition was observed against Vibrio cholera(V.cholera)(9 mm and 2 mm in diameter),followed by Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus) with a inhibition zone of(6 mm and 3 mm),Streptococcus areus(S.areus)(5 mm and 4 mm),Vibrio parahemolyticus(V.parahemolyticus)(4 mm and 5 mm) respectively. Conclusions:The present investigation has revealed that positive progresses in the fish mucus extracts against human pathogens and hemolytic activity. But further efforts are required for the purification and isolation of the active antimicrobial compounds in order to establish their possible applications. | Subramanian Bragadeeswaran Selvam Priyadharshini Kolandhasamy Prabhu Solomon Raj Sophia Rani | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,4: | 3

Role of post-translational modification of the Y box binding protein 1 in human cancers显示文摘Y box binding protein-1(YBX1)belongs to a DNA-and RNA-binding family of transcription factors, containing the highly conserved cold shock domain(CSD).YBX1 is involved in a number of cellular functions including transcription, translation,DNA damage repair etc.,and it is upregulated during times of environmental stress.YBX1 is localized in both the cytoplasm and the nucleus. There, its nuclear translocation is observed in a number of cancers and is associated with poor prognosis and disease progression.Additionally,YBX1 expression is upregulated in a variety of cancers, pointing towards its role as a potential oncogene.Under certain circumstances,YBX1 also promotes the expression of multidrug resistance 1(MDR1)gene,which is involved in the development of drug resistance. Thus,it is critical to understand the mechanism of YBX1 regulation and its downstream effects on promoting cancer development.A number of recent studies have highlighted the mechanisms of YBX1 regulation.Mass spectrometric analyses have reported several post-translational modifications that possibly play an important role in modulating YBX1 function.Phosphorylation is the most widely occurring post-translational modification in YBX1.In vivo analyses of sites like S102 and more recently,S165 illustrate the relationship of post-translational regulation of YBX1 in promoting cell proliferation and tumor growth. This review provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of post-translational modifications identified in YBX1.This knowledge is a key in allowing us to better understand the mechanism of YBX1 regulation, which will aid in development of novel therapeutic strategies to target YBX1 in many types of cancer in the future. | Lakshmi Prabhu Antja-Voy Hartley Matthew Martin Fadumo Warsame Emily Sun Tao Lu | 2015 | Genes & Diseases2015,2,3: | 3
Ileocecal valve dysfunction in small intestinal bacterial overgrowth: A pilot study显示文摘AIM: To explore whether patients with a defective ileocecal valve (ICV)/cecal distension reflex have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. METHODS: Using a colonoscope, under conscious sedation, the ICV was intubated and the colonoscope was placed within the terminal ileum (TI). A manometry catheter with 4 pressure channels, spaced 1 cm apart, was passed through the biopsy channel of the colonoscope into the TI. The colonoscope was slowly withdrawn from the TI while the manometry catheter was advanced. The catheter was placed across the ICV so that at least one pressure port was within the TI, ICV and the cecum respectively. Pressures were continuously measured during air insufflation into the cecum, under direct endoscopic visualization, in 19 volunteers. Air was insufflated to a maximum of 40 mmHg to prevent barotrauma. All subjects underwent lactulose breath testing one month after the colonoscopy. The results of the breath tests were compared with the results of the pressures within the ICV during air insufflation. RESULTS: Nineteen subjects underwent colonoscopy with measurements of the ICV pressures after intubation of the ICV with a colonoscope. Initial baseline readings showed no statistical difference in the pressures of the TI and ICV, between subjects with positive lactulose breath tests and normal lactulose breath tests. The average peak ICV pressure during air insufflation into the cecum in subjects with normal lactu-lose breath tests was significantly higher than cecal pressures during air insufflation (49.33 ± 7.99 mmHg vs 16.40 ± 2.14 mmHg, P = 0.0011). The average percentage difference of the area under the pressure curve of the ICV from the cecum during air insufflations in subjects with normal lactulose breath tests was significantly higher (280.72% ± 43.29% vs 100% ± 0%, P = 0.0006). The average peak ICV pressure during air insufflation into the cecum in subjects with positive lactulose breath tests was not significantly different than cecal pressures during air insufflation 21.23 ± 3.52 mmHg vs 16.10 ± 3.39 mmHg. The average percentage difference of the area under the pressure curve of the ICV from the cecum during air insufflation was not significantly different 101.08% ± 7.96% vs 100% ± 0%. The total symptom score for subjects with normal lactulose breath tests and subjects with positive lactu-lose breath tests was not statistically different (13.30 ± 4.09 vs 24.14 ± 6.58). The ICV peak pressures during air insufflations were significantly higher in subjects with normal lactulose breath tests than in subjects with positive lactulose breath tests (P = 0.005). The average percent difference of the area under the pressure curve in the ICV from cecum was significantly higher in subjects with normal lactulose breath tests than in subjects with positive lactulose breath tests (P = 0.0012). Individuals with positive lactulose breath tests demonstrated symptom scores which were significantly higher for the following symptoms: not able to finish normal sized meal, feeling excessively full after meals, loss of appetite and bloating. CONCLUSION: Compared to normal, subjects with a positive lactulose breath test have a defective ICV cecal distension reflex. These subjects also more commonly have higher symptom scores. | Larry S Miller Anil K Vegesna Aiswerya Madanam Sampath Shital Prabhu Sesha Krishna Kotapati Kian Makipour | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,46: | 3
