Recognition on the forming-vanishing process and underlying mechanisms of the hypoxia off the Yangtze River estuary显示文摘On the basis of compiled multidisciplinary historical data in 2006–2007 and incorporation of relevant simulation results and remote sensing data, we performed an in-depth study of the generation and dissipation process of the hypoxic zone and its distribution morphology and structure off the Yangtze River estuary. Based on the hydrological circulation dynamics, reproduction of phytoplankton(leading to the decomposition of organic matter), and other factors, we comprehensively and systematically investigated the generation and dissipation of the hypoxic zone and underlying mechanisms for the seasonal variation in its position, explored the multi-factorial synergistic reactions during the generation and dissipation process of the hypoxic zone, and revealed the controlled mechanism for the morphology and structure of the hypoxic zone's distribution. Our studies indicate that in the winter and spring seasons, the hydrological environment off the Yangtze River estuary provides a water body with relatively low contents of dissolved oxygen(DO), which is the background for the formation of a hypoxic zone. After entering into the summer season, the hypoxic zone gradually develops towards the north and becomes mature. Because of the impact of the terrain, local decomposition of organic matter, and upwelling of the Kuroshio subsurface water in July–August, the hypoxic zone off the Yangtze River estuary exhibits the characteristics of discontinuous distribution in space and has a south and north 'dual-core' structure in the inner continental shelf. In addition, there is a hypoxic core in the eastern outer continental shelf. The degrees of hypoxia vary for different areas; they are strongest overall in the north, next strongest in the south; they are weakest on the outer continental shelf. In summer, the hypoxic zone in the north is related to the northward differentiation of the southern hypoxic zone and results from local development and intensification. In August, the hypoxic zone in the north reaches its peak, and after September, it rapidly retreats southward and disappears because of weakening stratification. In the fall, there is hypoxic zone along the coast of Zhejiang in the south, and there is also a low-DO area to the southwest of Jeju Island, with both zones disappearing rapidly. In addition, the change of dynamic environment also causes the low-DO area of the outer continental shelf to move outward in the fall. The variation in the intensity of the stratification and its cumulative effects as a barrier of vertical DO transportation over long periods of time have a significant impact on the degree of hypoxia in the hypoxic zone. In addition, the seasonal variations in the size of the stratified region, intensity of each current system/water mass, upwelling, front, and high-value area of phytoplankton biomass jointly restrict the extension of the hypoxic zone in the inner continental shelf and latitudinal(south-north direction) movement of its location off the Yangtze River estuary. The combined effect of dynamic factors, such as that of the Kuroshio subsurface water, causes a low-DO core in the outer continental shelf. The bottom cold water to the north of the East China Sea is the dynamic basis for the formation of the low-DO area to the southwest of Jeju Island during the fall season. The special seabed topography and mud area distribution off the Yangtze River estuary have a certain degree of influence on the development of the hypoxic zone. The generation and dissipation of the hypoxic zone and its distribution morphology off the Yangtze River estuary, and seasonal variation of its structure and position are a result of the synergistic effects of various factors.WEI QinSheng WANG BaoDong CHEN JianFang XIA ChangShui QU DaPeng XIE LinPing 2015Science China Earth Sciences2015,58,4:15
Mechanisms leading to the frequent occurrences of hypoxia and a preliminary analysis of the associated acidification off the Changiiang estuary in summer显示文摘Based on literature data and shipboard observations, this study investigated the main environmental characteristics of the seafloor topography, current field, front, and upwelling that are closely related to hypoxia occurrence off the Changjiang estuary. The physical processes of the plume front and upwelling off the Changjiang estuary in summer were coupled. The vertical distribution pattern of the plume front was closely related to the upwelling.By reviewing and analyzing the historical summer hypoxia events off the Changjiang estuary,we statistically demonstrated the spatial structure of the horizontal distribution of the hypoxic zone and investigated the location of occurrence zone of the hypoxia. We found that the dissolved oxygen(DO)concentration on the inner continental shelf off the estuary showed a'V'shape in relation to station depth. Therefore,we noted that the hypoxic water on the inner continental shelf mostly occurred on the slopes with steep seafloor topography.Base on the current understanding of the hypoxic mechanisms off the Changjiang estuary,we analyzed the biogeochemical mechanisms that could cause the steep terrain off the Changjiang estuary to become the main areas prone to summer hypoxia and explained the internal relations between the location of the hypoxic zone on the slopes and the plume front and upwelling. The plume front and upwelling off the Changjiang estuary and their coupling were important driving forces of summer hypoxia. The continuous supply of nutrients affected by the interaction of the plume front extension of the Changjiang Diluted Water(CDW)and upwelling and the favorable light conditions were important mechanisms causing the phytoplankton blooms and benthic hypoxia off the Changjiang estuary in summer.By analyzing oxygen utilization, organic carbon mineralization, and nutrient regeneration in the hypoxic zone,we observed that the significant oxygen utilization process off the Changjiang estuary in summer also mainly occurred near the steep slopes with front and upwelling features and confirmed the apparent nutrient loss in the benthic hypoxic zone.Meanwhile, our analysis revealed that the sediment resuspension in the benthic boundary layer in the mud areas off the Changjiang estuary could also affect the oxygen utilization and mineralization of organic carbon and nutrient recycling and regeneration. This study also demonstrated that the steep terrain off the Changjiang estuary was the main location for summer acidification, and the coupling between the plume front and upwelling on the steep slopes was an important physical driving force inducing summer benthic acidification. Finally,we discussed issues to address in future studies of the hypoxic zone and water acidification off the Changjiang estuary.WEI QinSheng WANG BaoDong YU ZhiGang CHEN JianFang XUE Liang 2017Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,2:5
Physical-biogeochemical interactions and potential effects on phytoplankton and Ulva prolifera in the coastal waters off Qingdao(Yellow Sea, China)显示文摘In recent years, the spectacular massive green tide of Ulva prolifera has become a recurrent phenomenon appearing every summer in the coastal waters off Qingdao(Yellow Sea, China), attracting the attention of scientists and local government. Based on multidisciplinary data collected during summer and winter, this study focuses on the hydrological characteristics and regional biogeochemical processes in coastal waters off Qingdao. The results show that the boundary of the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass(YSCWM) can reach the Qingdao coastal region in summer and is locally raised to the upper layers to form coastal upwelling beyond tidal mixing and favorable wind. The regional summer upwelling off the Qingdao coast effectively enriches the nutrient concentrations in the upper water column and thus promotes growth of phytoplankton but reduces the dissolved oxygen(DO) concentration and pH value in the bottom. The regional summer upwelling off Qingdao coast may facilitate the growth and regional blooming of the U. prolifera that migrate to this region with the southerly wind.Additionally, the effects of the front on the aggregation of U. prolifera may be significant. In winter, the Yellow Sea Warm Current(YSWC) extends and spreads along the offshore region off the Subei Shoal towards the Qingdao coastal sea. This tongue-shaped warm water meets the cold coastal water off Qingdao, which leads to the formation of a physical front. As a consequence, remarkable fronts of nutrient and chlorophyll a(Chl a) also form between the shoreward warm water and the cold coastal water. This study increases the understanding of the interactions between the regional physical, chemical, and biological processes off the Qingdao coast.Qinsheng Wei Baodong Wang Qingzhen Yao Zhigang Yu Mingzhu Fu Junchuan Sun Bochao Xu Linping Xie Ming Xin 2019Acta Oceanologica Sinica2019,38,2:4
Spatiotemporal variability of physical-biogeochemical processes and intrinsic correlations in the semi-enclosed South Yellow Sea显示文摘Investigating the spatiotemporal variability of biogeochemical processes and ecological responses under multiple physical controls in shelf seas is of great importance for obtaining an in-depth understanding of marine ecosystem.Based on a compiled data set of historical observations and remote sensing data, the spatiotemporal variability and heterogeneity of physical-biogeochemical processes in the semi-enclosed South Yellow Sea(SYS)are investigated, and the intrinsic connectivity among different subregions and the associated mechanisms are examined. The results show that the seasonal alternation between southward transport in cold seasons and upwelling-induced vertical delivery in warm seasons is the primary physical control of the biogeochemical processes and primary production off Shidao and in the area adjacent to the Haizhou Bay.The northeastward expansion of coastal waters in the Subei Shoal constitutes an important physical driver for the offshore transport of Ulva prolifera in summer.Stratification significantly affects the biogeochemical processes in the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass(YSCWM)-dominated area during warm seasons, and nutrients can accumulate in bottom waters from spring to autumn, making the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass(YSCWM)be an important nutrient pool.Upwelling around the YSCWM boundary in the stratified season leads to consistency among the high chlorophyll a(Chl a)area, high primary productivity region and low-temperature upwelling zone.During cold seasons, the interactions of the southward cold waters in the western nearshore area and the northward warm waters in the central region lead to an“S”-shaped front in the SYS.In summer, upwelling can extract nutrients from the YSCWM;thus, the biogeochemical-ecological processes inside the cold-water mass and in the frontal zone are well connected via upwelling, and three typical physical-biogeochemical coupling regions are generated, namely, the Shidao coast, the area beyond the Haizhou Bay and the area off the Subei Shoal. This work refines and integrates studies on regional oceanography in the SYS and provides a comprehensive and systematic framework of physical-biogeochemical-ecological processes.Qinsheng Wei Baodong Wang Mingzhu Fu Junchuan Sun Qingzhen Yao Ming Xin Zhigang Yu 2020Acta Oceanologica Sinica2020,39,10:3
Species-specific detection and quantification of scyphomedusae in Jiaozhou Bay,China, using a quantitative real-time PCR assay显示文摘Over the past decades, jellyfish occurred increasingly and abundantly in coastal areas worldwide.Usually, biomass of jellyfish, especially when they bloom, can be determined by visual counting. However, tiny individuals of jellyfish(e.g.,planulae,polyps,and ephyrae)are difficult to detect in the field. In this study,species-specific quantitative real-time PCR assays(qPCR)(SYBR Green I)targeting the mitochondrial 16S rDNA(mt-16S rDNA)of jellyfish were developed and were used to estimate the distribution and seasonal fluctuations of four jellyfish species(Nemopilema nomurai,Cyanea nozakii,Rhopilema esculentum, and Aurelia coerulea)in Jiaozhou Bay(JZB),China in 2013.The mt-16S rDNA of A.coerulea and N.nomurai was detected in most of the survey months and it peaked in July(1.03×10^(4) copies/L)and September(1.08×10^(6) copies/L),respectively.The mt-16S rDNA of C.nozakii occurred from August to October only with monthly mean values of 7.18-46.17 copies/L and was mainly located from the middle part to the outer part of the bay.The mt-16S rDNA of R.esculentum was the least abundant among the four species and was detected in only one sample(B2 station in March),with a value of 88.49 copies/L.The Spearman correlation test revealed that phytoplankton biomass was significantly and positively correlated with the mt-16S rDNA abundance of A.coerulea(R=0.37,P<0.01)and negatively with the mt-16S rDNA of N.nomurai(R=-0.36,P<0.01).The qPCR assay will enable the identification and quantification of jellyfish species in their whole life history and can be used as an approach in combination of the traditional jellyfish survey.Jianyan WANG Tiezhu MI Zhigang YU Guoshan WANG Qinsheng WEI Jing YANG Yu ZHEN 2021Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2021,39,4:3
Phytoplankton pigment pattern in the subsurface chlorophyll maximum in the South Java coastal upwelling system, Indonesia显示文摘Upwelling occurs on the coast of Java between June and October, forced by local alongshore winds associated with the southeasterly monsoon. This causes variations in phytoplankton community composition in the upwelling zone compared with the surrounding offshore area. Based on pigments analysis with subsequent calculations of group contributions to total chlorophyll a(Chl a) using CHEMTAX, we studied the distribution and composition of phytoplankton assemblages in the subsurface chlorophyll maximum along the south coast of Java and the influence of upwelling. Nineteen phytoplankton pigments were identified using high-performance liquid chromatography, and CHEMTAX analysis associated these to ten major phytoplankton groups. The phytoplankton community in the coastal area influenced by upwelling was characterized by high Chl a and fucoxanthin concentrations, indicating the dominance of diatoms. In contrast, in the offshore area, the Chl a and fucoxanthin concentrations declined to very low levels and the community was dominated by haptophytes represented by 19′-Hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin. Accordingly, microphytoplankton was found to be the major size class in the coastal area influenced by upwelling, while nanophytoplankton was most abundant in the offshore area. Low concentrations of other accessory pigments indicated less contribution from dinoflagellates, prasinophytes, chlorophytes and cryptophytes. Photo-pigment indices revealed that photosynthetic carotenoids(PSCs) were the largest component of the pigment pool, exceeding the proportion of Chl a, with the average PSCTP up to 0.62. These distribution trends can mainly be explained by phytoplankton adaption strategies to upwelling and subsurface conditions by changing species composition and adjusting the pigment pool.GAO Chunlei FU Mingzhu SONG Hongjun WANG Lei WEI Qinsheng SUN Ping LIU Lin ZHANG Xuelei 2018Acta Oceanologica Sinica2018,37,12:1
Effects of Tamarisk shrub on physicochemical properties of soil in coastal wetland of the Bohai Sea显示文摘There are many different and even controversial results concerning the effects of Tamarisk on the physicochemical properties of soil. A year-round monitoring of soil salinity, p H and moisture is conducted beneath the Tamarisk shrub in a coastal wetland in the Bohai Sea in China, to ascertain the effects of Tamarisk on the physicochemical properties of soil in coastal wetland. Compared with the control area, the soil moisture content is lower around the area of the taproot when there is less precipitation in the growing season because of water consumption by Tamarisk shrub. However, the soil moisture content is higher around the taproot when there is more precipitation in the growing season or in the non-growing period because of water conservation by the rhizosphere. The absorption of salt by the Tamarisk shrub reduces the soil salinity temporarily, but eventually salt returns to the soil by the leaching of salt on leaves by rainfall or by fallen leaves. The annual average soil moisture content beneath the Tamarisk shrub is lower than the control area by only 6.4%, indicating that the Tamarisk shrub has little effect on drought or water conservation in soils in the temperate coastal wetland with moderate annual precipitation. The annual average salinity beneath the Tamarisk shrub is 18% greater than that of the control area, indicating that Tamarisk does have an effect of rising soil salinity around Tamarisk shrubs. The soil p H value is as low as 7.3 in summer and as high as 10.2 in winter. The p H of soil near the taproot of the Tamarisk shrubs is one p H unit lower than that in the control area during the growing season. The difference in p H is less different from the control area in the non-growing season, indicating that the Tamarisk shrub does have the effect of reducing the alkalinity of soil in coastal wetland.HE Xiuping WANG Baodong XIE Linping XIN Ming WANG Wei WANG Zicheng ZHANG Wenquan WEI Qinsheng 2016Acta Oceanologica Sinica2016,35,5:1

Does reduced sediment load contribute to increased outbreaks of harmful algal blooms off the Changjiang Estuary?显示文摘Harmful algal blooms(HABs) have been increasingly frequent in coastal waters around the world over the last several decades. Accelerated coastal eutrophication, resulting from the increased anthropogenic loadings of nutrients, is commonly assumed to be the primary cause of this increase. However, although important, accelerated coastal eutrophication may not be the only explanation for the increasing blooms or toxic outbreaks in estuarine waters. Changes in riverine material fluxes other than nutrients, such as sediment load, may significantly affect biological activities and HAB incidence in estuarine and coastal waters. A case study off the Changjiang(Yangtze River) Estuary indicated that with the increasing riverine loadings of nutrients, the sediment load from the Changjiang River has been reduced by 70% over the past four decades. A comparison of long-term data revealed that the phytoplankton biomass maximum has expanded to a region of much lower salinity due to the drastic reduction in riverine sediment load and the subsequent improvement in light penetration in the Changjiang River plume. Furthermore, there was an apparent mirror-image relationship between the sediment load from the Changjiang River and the HAB incidence off the Changjiang Estuary over the past four decades, and the number of HAB incidents was significantly negatively correlated with the sediment load. Therefore, it is argued that the drastic decline in sediment load from the Changjiang River reduced turbidity in the Changjiang Estuary and thus contributed to the increased frequency of HABs in the buoyant discharge plumes.WANG Baodong XIN Ming SUN Xia WEI Qinsheng ZHANG Xuelei 2016Acta Oceanologica Sinica2016,35,8:1
Spatial Distribution and Seasonal Variation of Hypoxic Zone in the Eastern Equatorial Indian Ocean显示文摘The spatial distribution and seasonal variations of the hypoxic zone in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean were investigated using survey data collected from four cruises from 2013 to 2018.Results showed that hypoxic zone occurred all year round in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean, and it spread southward in the shape of a double tongue at two depths with one at subsurface centered at a depth of 150 m and the other in intermediate water centered at a depth of 800 m.The southward expansion and maximum thickness of the hypoxic zone were greatest in the spring inter-monsoon and least in the summer monsoon. The hypoxic zone originated from the southward expansion of the hypoxic water in the Bay of Bengal and its spatial distribution was driven by southward output flux of mid-deep(100–1000 m)hypoxic water from the Bay of Bengal. The hypoxia southward expansion was blocked near the equator in the subsurface layer, because of mixing with multiple zonal circulations(e.g.,Wyrtki Jets and the equatorial undercurrent),which meant that the hypoxic zone extended over a smaller area than in the intermediate water. These new findings will contribute to an improved understanding of the hypoxic zone and will contribute to circulation research, particularly about intermediate circulation in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean.XIE Linping WANG Baodong XIN Ming WANG Ying SUN Xia WEI Qinsheng LIU Lin YUAN Chao 2023Journal of Ocean University of China2023,22,4:0
Submarine groundwater discharge and seasonal hypoxia off the Changjiang River Estuary显示文摘Hypoxia is a common phenomenon in the sea adjacent to the Changjiang River Estuary(CJE),one of the global major estuaries.Submarine groundwater discharge(SGD)is a widely recognized pathway for terrestrial materials entering the sea,and has been found to be significant off the CJE.We used a^(222)Rn mass balance model to estimate the SGD fluxes off the CJE and showed that it is linked to seasonal dissolved oxygen(DO)variations.Average SGD fluxes were estimated to be(0.012±0.010)m^(3)/(m^(2)·d)in winter,(0.034±0.015)m^(3)/(m^(2)·d)in summer,and(0.020±0.010)m^(3)/(m^(2)·d)in autumn. We found a significant negative correlation between DO concentrations and SGD rates with groundwater discharge being highest in the summer flood season. In addition, distribution patterns of SGD and hypoxia zones in summer are spatially overlapped, indicating that SGD is an important contributor to summer hypoxia in this region.Tianyi Zhu Bochao Xu Xiaoyi Guo Qinsheng Wei Ergang Lian Pengxia Liu William C.Burnett Qingzhen Yao Zhigang Yu 2023Acta Oceanologica Sinica2023,42,8:0
Bacterial and archaeal communities in deep sea waters near the Ninetyeast Ridge in Indian Ocean显示文摘Depth-dependent distribution patterns of bacterial and archaeal communities in deep sea water column around the Ninetyeast Ridge in the Indian Ocean were investigated using 16S rRNA gene profiling.Sampling was conducted at the northern Ninetyeast Ridge(1°59.89′N–9°59.70′S,87°58.90′E–88°00.03′E)from September to November 2016 where samples were collected from the bathyal(1000 m)to bathypelagic depths(>4000 m)in four different stations.A total of 1565405 clean data falling into 6712 bacterial OTUs and 1452727 clean data falling into 806 archaeal OTUs based on 97%similarity level were analyzed. Most of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences were affiliated with Gammaproteobacteria, followed by Alphaproteobacteria and Bacteroidia. The archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequences mostly affiliated to Nitrososphaeria(Thaumarchaeota)dominated with relative abundances ranging from 52.68%to 97.2%,followed by Thermoplasmata(Euryarchaeota).Vertical partitioning of bacterial and archaeal communities among different water layers was observed.Canonical correspondence analysis(CCA)and Spearman’s correlations revealed that depth(P=0.003),dissolved oxygen(P=0.019),and nitrite(P=0.033)were the main environmental factors affecting bacterial community structure at genus level in the Ninetyeast Ridge. On the other hand, the first two CCA axes accounted for 74.4%of the explained total variance,it seems that the archaeal communities at genus level were heavily influenced by the environmental variables including depth, dissolved oxygen(DO),nitrite, salinity, phosphate, ammonia, nitrate, and silicate, but none of them exhibited any significant correlation on the structuring(P>0.1).Ping GAO Lingyun QU Guangxun DU Qinsheng WEI Xuelei ZHANG Guang YANG 2021Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2021,39,2:0
Photosynthetic physiologies of phytoplankton in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean during the spring inter-monsoon显示文摘Phytoplankton physiologies are dynamic and have sensitive responses to the ambient environment. In this paper, we examine photosynthetic physiologies of phytoplankton communities with Phyto-PAM in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean during the spring inter-monsoon. Environmental parameters were measured to investigate the coupling between phytoplankton photosynthetic physiologies and their habitats. During the cruise, the water column was highly stratified. The mixed layer extended to about 75 m and was characterized by high temperature (>28°C) and low nutrient level. The Fv/Fm values and chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations were lower at the surface, as consequences of nutrient depletion and photo-inhibition. Subsurface Chl a maximum (SCM) occurred between 75 and 100 m, and had the highest Fv/Fm values. The formation of SCM was a balance between nutrient availability and light limitation. The SCM may contribute significantly to pelagic food web and primary production in the water column. Phytoplankton in different layers encountered different light, trophic and hydrographic dynamics and evolved distinct photosynthetic characteristics. Despite of co-limitation of nutrient limitation and photo-inhibition, phytoplankton in the surface layer showed their acclimation to high irradiance, had lower light utilization efficiencies (α: 0.061±0.032) and could exploit a wide range of light irradiance. Whereas, phytoplankton in the SCM layers presented the highest light utilization efficiencies (α: 0.146±0.48), which guaranteed higher photosynthetic capacities under low light level. These results provide insights into phytoplankton photo-adaption strategies in this less explored region.Chao Yuan Zongjun Xu Xuelei Zhang Qinsheng Wei Huiwu Wang Zongling Wang 2019Acta Oceanologica Sinica2019,38,6:0
