2Machine learning in materials informatics:recent applications and prospects显示文摘Propelled partly by the Materials Genome Initiative,and partly by the algorithmic developments and the resounding successes of data-driven efforts in other domains,informatics strategies are beginning to take shape within materials science.These approaches lead to surrogate machine learning models that enable rapid predictions based purely on past data rather than by direct experimentation or by computations/simulations in which fundamental equations are explicitly solved.Data-centric informatics methods are becoming useful to determine material properties that are hard to measure or compute using traditional methods—due to the cost,time or effort involved—but for which reliable data either already exists or can be generated for at least a subset of the critical cases.Predictions are typically interpolative,involving fingerprinting a material numerically first,and then following a mapping(established via a learning algorithm)between the fingerprint and the property of interest.Fingerprints,also referred to as“descriptors”,may be of many types and scales,as dictated by the application domain and needs.Predictions may also be extrapolative—extending into new materials spaces—provided prediction uncertainties are properly taken into account.This article attempts to provide an overview of some of the recent successful data-driven“materials informatics”strategies undertaken in the last decade,with particular emphasis on the fingerprint or descriptor choices.The review also identifies some challenges the community is facing and those that should be overcome in the near future.Rampi Ramprasad Rohit Batra Ghanshyam Pilania Arun Mannodi-Kanakkithodi Chiho Kim 2017npj Computational Materials2017,,1:40
3Application of wireless sensor networks to aircraft control and health management systems显示文摘Use of fly-by-wire technology for aircraft flight controls have resulted in an improved performance and reliability along with achieving reduction in control system weight. Implementation of full authority digital engine control has also resulted in more intelligent, reliable, light-weight aircraft engine control systems. Greater reduction in weight can be achieved by replacing the wire harness with a wireless communication network. The first step towards fly-by-wireless control systems is likely to be the introduction of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). WSNs are already finding a variety of applications for both safety-critical and nonsafety critical distributed systems. Some of the many potential benefits of using WSN for aircraft systems include weight reduction, ease of maintenance and an increased monitoring capability. This paper discusses the application of WSN for several aircraft systems such as distributed aircraft engine control, aircraft flight control, aircraft engine and structural health monitoring systems. A brief description of each system is presented along with a discussion on the technological challenges. 4A universal strategy for the creation of machine learning-based atomistic force fields显示文摘Emerging machine learning(ML)-based approaches provide powerful and novel tools to study a variety of physical and chemical problems.In this contribution,we outline a universal strategy to create ML-based atomistic force fields,which can be used to perform high-fidelity molecular dynamics simulations.This scheme involves(1)preparing a big reference dataset of atomic environments and forces with sufficiently low noise,e.g.,using density functional theory or higher-level methods,(2)utilizing a generalizable class of structural fingerprints for representing atomic environments,(3)optimally selecting diverse and nonredundant training datasets from the reference data,and(4)proposing various learning approaches to predict atomic forces directly(and rapidly)from atomic configurations.From the atomistic forces,accurate potential energies can then be obtained by appropriate integration along a reaction coordinate or along a molecular dynamics trajectory.Based on this strategy,we have created model ML force fields for six elemental bulk solids,including Al,Cu,Ti,W,Si,and C,and show that all of them can reach chemical accuracy.The proposed procedure is general and universal,in that it can potentially be used to generate ML force fields for any material using the same unified workflow with little human intervention.Moreover,the force fields can be systematically improved by adding new training data progressively to represent atomic environments not encountered previously.Tran Doan Huan Rohit Batra James Chapman Sridevi Krishnan Lihua Chen Rampi Ramprasad 2017npj Computational Materials2017,,1:10
5Solving the electronic structure problem with machine learning显示文摘Simulations based on solving the Kohn-Sham(KS)equation of density functional theory(DFT)have become a vital component of modern materials and chemical sciences research and development portfolios.Despite its versatility,routine DFT calculations are usually limited to a few hundred atoms due to the computational bottleneck posed by the KS equation.Here we introduce a machine-learning-based scheme to efficiently assimilate the function of the KS equation,and by-pass it to directly,rapidly,and accurately predict the electronic structure of a material or a molecule,given just its atomic configuration.A new rotationally invariant representation is utilized to map the atomic environment around a grid-point to the electron density and local density of states at that grid-point.This mapping is learned using a neural network trained on previously generated reference DFT results at millions of grid-points.The proposed paradigm allows for the high-fidelity emulation of KS DFT,but orders of magnitude faster than the direct solution.Moreover,the machine learning prediction scheme is strictly linear-scaling with system size.Anand Chandrasekaran Deepak Kamal Rohit Batra Chiho Kim Lihua Chen Rampi Ramprasad 2019npj Computational Materials2019,,1:10
6Clinical Validation of Global Coagulation Tests to Guide Blood Component Transfusions in Cirrhosis and ACLF显示文摘Background and Aims:Patients with cirrhosis and acuteon-chronic liver failure(ACLF)may have bleeding complications and need for invasive procedures.Point-of-care(POC)coagulation tests like thromboelastography(TEG)and Sonoclot may be better for guiding patient management than the standard coagulation tests(SCTs),like prothrombin time,platelet count and international normalized ratio.Methods:We prospectively compared and validated the POC tests and SCTs in 70 persons with ACLF and 72 persons with decompensated cirrhosis who had clinical bleeding and checked for episodes of re-bleeding and transfusion requirements.We assessed pre-procedure requirement of blood components when correction was done based on an SCT or POC strategy.Results:Episodes of bleeding were seen in 45%and 28%of ACLF and cirrhosis patient,respectively(p=0.036),with the major site of bleeding being gastrointestinal(31%and 16%,respectively).Platelet counts correlated with TEG-maximum amplitude in cirrhosis(p=0.045)and prothrombin time correlated positively with TEG-reaction(R)time(p=0.032),TEG-Clot kinetics(K)time(p=0.042),Son-activated clotting time(p=0.038)and negatively with clot rate(p=0.043)in ACLF,making these correctable target variables in POC transfusion algorithms.Of 223 procedures,transfusion of fresh frozen plasma and platelet concentrate was reduced by 25%(p=0.035)and 20.8%(p=0.045)by using a POC strategy in 76 patients.Correction of deranged Son-activated clotting time and TEG-reaction time was noted in 68%and 72%after 24 h of fresh frozen plasma transfusion in ACLF and 85%and 80%in cirrhosis,respectively.Conclusions:Our study clinically validates that POC tests can better detect coagulation defects and transfusion thresholds in ACLF and cirrhosis,whereas use of conventional tests appear to be less suitable in patients with clinical bleeding.Trial Registration:NCT04332484.Madhumita Premkumar Rohit Mehtani Smita Divyaveer Kamal Kajal Anand VKulkarni Syed Ahmed Harmanpreet Kaur Harpreet Kaur Radhakrishna Dhiman Ajay Duseja Arka De 2021Journal of Clinical and Translational Hepatology2021,9,2:7
7Minimally invasive surgery for rectal cancer: Are we there yet?显示文摘Laparoscopic colon surgery for select cancers is slowly evolving as the standard of care but minimally invasive approaches for rectal cancer have been viewed with significant skepticism. This procedure has been performed by select surgeons at specialized centers and concerns over local recurrence, sexual dysfunction and appropriate training measures have further hindered widespread acceptance. Data for laparoscopic rectal resection now supports its continued implementation and widespread usage by expeienced surgeons for select patients. 8Duodenal variceal bleeding with large spontaneous portosystemic shunt treated with transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt and embolization: A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Duodenal variceal bleeding is a rare cause of gastrointestinal bleeding. The most common site is the duodenal bulb. It is usually detected endoscopically but it can be very challenging to diagnose if it is located distal to the second part od duodenum. The pre- transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) presence of spontaneous portosystemic shunt (SPSS) was found to be associated with an increased risk of early morbidity and mortality after TIPS placement. CASE SUMMARY A 43-year-old cirrhotic male presented with melena for three days. Upper endoscopy was performed and showed active blood oozing from the distal duodenum concerning for ectopic duodenal varix. A computed tomography (CT) angiogram was performed and showed an enlarged cluster of venous collaterals around the distal duodenum. He underwent TIPS placement. He had another episode of melena three days later. Push enteroscopy with injection sclerotherapy into the duodenal varices was performed with no success. A repeat CT angiogram showed occluded TIPS shunt. Therefore, a TIPS revision was performed and there was an extensive portal venous thrombosis with a large shunt between the inferior mesenteric vein and left renal vein via the left gonadal vein. Thrombectomy and TIPS shunt balloon angioplasty was performed, followed by embolization of the portosystemic. The melena was resolved, and patient was discharged with arranged hepatology follow up. 9Retinal structural-vascular-functional relationship using optical coherence tomography and optical coherence tomography -angiography in myopia显示文摘Background:To examine the retinal structure–vascular-function relationship using optical coherence tomography(OCT)and optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)in myopia.Methods:This was a prospective cross-sectional study comprising 86 eyes of 45 individuals with varying axial lengths and spherical equivalents and no posterior segment abnormalities.All eyes underwent optical coherence tomography with the Spectralis SD-OCT and OCTA with RTVue-XR Avanti;Optovue.Individual macular retinal layer thicknesses and flow areas and vessel densities were measured on OCT and OCTA,respectively.Linear correlations were made between the macular layer thicknesses,flow areas and vessel densities with axial length,spherical equivalent and visual acuity.Results:The participants’mean ages were 33.34±14.45 years,mean spherical equivalent refractions were−7.17±5.71 D and axial lengths were 25.95±2.41 mm.There were significant positive correlations of foveal angle(r=0.757,p=0.001),inner retinal(r=0.764,p=0.001)and outer plexiform layer(r=0.771,p=0.001)thickness on OCT and vessel densities in deep capillary plexus(r=0.313,p=0.003)on OCTA with axial length and negative correlations with spherical equivalents and visual acuity.Significant negative correlations of outer nuclear layer(r=−0.560,p=0.03)and photoreceptor outer segment layer thickness(r=−0.856,p<0.001)were noted on OCT with axial length and positive correlations with spherical equivalents and visual acuity.Conclusion:The lateral retinal stretching in myopia could possibly explain the correlation between retinal layer thickness,vascular density and visual acuity in these eyes.Further research is required to investigate this.Ramesh Venkatesh Shivani Sinha Deepika Gangadharaiah Santosh G.K.Gadde Ashwin Mohan Rohit Shetty Naresh Kumar Yadav 2019Eye and Vision2019,6,1:7

15Transversus abdominis plane infiltration for laparoscopic gastric banding: A pilot study显示文摘AIM: To estimate an effect size for the transversus abdominis plane(TAP) infiltration on quality of recovery in patients undergoing laparoscopic gastric band surgery. METHODS: The pilot study was a randomized, double blinded, placebo controlled trial. Patients undergoing laparoscopic gastric band surgery were randomized to receive a bilateral TAP infiltration with 20 mL of 0.5% ropivacaine or saline. The evaluated outcomes included quality of recovery-40(QoR-40) at 24 h, postoperative opioid consumption and pain. Data was examined using the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: Nineteen subjects were recruited. There was a positive trend favoring the TAP infiltration group in global QoR-40 scores at 24 h after surgery, median [interquartile range(IQR)] of 175.5(170-189) com-pared to 170(160-175) in the control group(P = 0.06). There also a positive trend toward a lower cumulative opioid consumption in the TAP infiltration group, median(IQR) of 7.5(2.5-11.5) mg iv morphine equivalents compared to 13(7-21.5) in the control group(P = 0.07). Correlation analysis(Spearman's Rho) demonstrated an inverse relationship between 24 h cumulative opioid consumption and global QoR-40 scores,-0.49(P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: The use of multimodal analgesic techniques to reduce opioid related side effects is particularly desirable in morbidly obese patients undergoing gastric reduction surgery. The TAP infiltration seems to have a clinically important effect in reducing postoperative opioid consumption and improve quality of recovery after laparoscopic gastric band surgery in morbid obese patients. 16Longitudinal evaluation of time related femoral neck narrowing after metal-on-metal hip resurfacing显示文摘AIM: To track the short-term neck narrowing changes in Birmingham metal-on-metal hip resurfacing(MOMHR) patients. METHODS: Since 2001, the Center for Hip and Knee Replacement started a registry to prospectively collect data on hip and knee replacement patients. From June 2006 to October 2008, 139 MOMHR were performed at our center by two participate surgeons using Birmingham MOMHR prosthesis(Smith Nephew, United States). It is standard of care for patients to obtain low, anteriorposterior(LAP) pelvis radiographs immediately after MOMHR procedure and then at 3 mo, 1 year and 2 year follow up office visits. Inclusion criteria for the present study included patients who came back for follow up office visit at above mentioned time points and got LAP radiographs. Exclusion criteria include patients who missed more than two follow up time points and those with poor-quality X-rays. Two orthopaedic residency trained research fellows reviewed the X-rays independently at 4 time points, i.e., immediate after surgery, 3 mo, 1 year and 2 year. Neck-to-prosthesis ratio(NPR) was used as main outcome measure. Twenty cases were used as subjects to identify the reliability between two observers. An intraclass correlation coefficient at 0.8 was considered as satisfied. A paired t-test was used to evaluate the significant difference between different time points with P < 0.05 considered to be statistically significant.RESULTS: The mean NPRs were 0.852 ± 0.056, 0.839 ± 0.052, 0.835 ± 0.051, 0.83 ± 0.04 immediately, 3 mo, 1 year and 2 years post-operatively respectively. At 3 mo, NPR was significantly different from immediate postoperative X-ray(P < 0.001). There was no difference between 3 mo and 1 year(P = 0.14) and 2 years(P = 0.53). Femoral neck narrowing(FNN) exceeding 10% of the diameter of the neck was observed in only 4 patients(5.6%) at two years follow up. None of these patients developed a femoral neck fracture(FNF). CONCLUSION: Femoral neck narrowing after MOMHR occurred as early as 3 mo postoperatively, and stabilized thereafter. 17Comparison of treatment modalities in pancreatic pseudocyst: A population based study显示文摘BACKGROUND Current therapeutic techniques for pancreatic pseudocyst include surgical management with a laparoscopic approach or an open surgical procedure,percutaneous catheter drainage and endoscopic drainage.Yet it remains controversial whether different treatment approaches affect inpatient outcome.AIM To investigate inpatient outcome of different treatment approaches in treating pancreatic pseudocyst.METHODS Here we conducted a retrospective analysis of pancreatic pseudocyst-associated hospitalizations using the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project-Nationwide Inpatient Sample.International Classification of Diseases 10 clinical modification and procedure codes are used.RESULTS A total of 7060 patients meeting the above criteria were identified.Our study revealed laparoscopic approach associated with the lowest rate of red blood cell transfusion(P<0.001),and it had lower short-term complications including acute renal failure(P=0.01),urinary tract infection(P=0.01),sepsis(P<0.001)and acute respiratory failure(P=0.01).Laparoscopic surgical approach associated with the shortest mean length of stay(P=0.009),and it had the lowest total charge(P=0.03).All three modalities have similar inpatient mortality(P=0.28).The study also revealed that percutaneous drainage associated with more emergent admission(P<0.001),rural hospital performs the most open surgical drainage(P<0.001)and patients who received laparoscopic drainage are more likely to be discharged home(P<0.001).CONCLUSION Laparoscopic drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts associated with the least shortterm complications and had better outcomes comparing to percutaneous and open surgical drainage from 2016 National Inpatient Sample database.Yanting Wang Yazan Abu Omar Rohit Agrawal Zimu Gong 2019World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2019,11,9:4
18Comparative study of Eu^(3+)-activated LnOCl(Ln=La and Gd) phosphors and their Judd-Ofelt analysis显示文摘Eu3+-activated layered Ln OCl(Ln=La and Gd) phosphors were synthesized by the conventional solid-state method at relatively low temperature(700 °C) and shorter duration of 2 h. The structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld refinement analysis and confirmed by the high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM). Both the compounds were crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm(No. 129). The homogeneity of the elements were analyzed by TEM mapping and found to be uniformly distributed. The photoluminescence spectra revealed that the intensity of 5D0→7F2 transition(619 nm) was more intense in Eu3+-activated Gd OCl compared to La OCl. This was due to the property of Gd3+ ions to act as an intermediate sublattice to facilitate the energy transfer to Eu3+ ions. Intensity parameters and radiative properties such as transition probabilities, radiative lifetime and branching ratio were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. The CIE color coordinates result revealed that the Eu3+-activated Gd OCl(0.641, 0.354) phosphor was close to the commercial red phosphors like, Y2O3:Eu3+(0.645, 0.347), Y2O2S:Eu3+(0.647, 0.343) and National Television System Committee(NTSC)(0.67, 0.33). 20Comparison of long-term outcome between patients aged 〈 65 years vs. ≥ 65 years after atrial fibrillation ablation显示文摘Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent arrhythmia, and its prevalence is increasing with aging. We aimed to com-pare the long-term outcome data of patients 〈 65 years vs.≥ 65 years who underwent catheter ablation (CA) for drug-refractory AF. MethodsConsecutive patients with primary pulmonary vein isolation performed between March 2001 and December 2011, and those who completeda five-year of follow-up were divided into two groups: patients aged 〈 65 years into group 1, and patients aged ≥ 65 into group 2. Long-termoutcome data concerning mortality, thromboembolic events (TE) and success rates were compared between these groups. Results A totalnumber of 390 patients were included, group 1 contained 310 patients, and 80 patients in group 2. In group 2, patients had more often impairedrenal function (P 〈 0.001) and thyroid disease (P = 0.047). A total of fifteen patients died during the 6.63 ± 2.1 years of follow-up, with a sig-nificantly higher incidence in the older group (8/80 vs. 7/310 patients, P = 0.004). The majority of fatal outcome was due to cancerous dis-eases in both groups. No difference was observed concerning the long-term TE rate (12/310 vs. 4/80 patients, P = 0.75). Rhythm controlfailed in 25.9% of the patients, with no difference between the groups: 26.4% in group 1 vs. 23.7% in group 2 (P = 0,67), ConclusionsDespite growing prevalence of AF in aging population, the elderly patients are underrepresented in CA procedures. Similar clinical successand TE complication rate are observed between the age-groups.
