| 1 | Fungal inoculation induces agarwood in young Aquilaria malaccensis trees in the nursery显示文摘Fungi are often used to induce agarwood in Aquilaria trees.This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of several fungi on agarwood formation over time in young Aquilaria malaccensis(Lam.)trees.Typical changes in the length and light intensity of the resulting discoloration were observed after three and six month periods following inoculation.Wood samples were observed microscopically and classified into several light intensity groups.The discoloration length was measured longitudinally.The duration after inoculation affected the mean of discoloration length:the 6-month old sample(1.70 cm)had a wider discoloration zone when compared to the 3-month old sample(1.17 cm).When measuring the discoloration intensity,a positive relationship with time was perceived.Digital images,captured using a camera-equipped microscope,revealed that wood samples collected after six months appeared to be 1.8-times darker than after three months.We concluded that time,not the species of any of the tested fungi,had significant effect on discoloration length and intensity.Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry(GCMS)analysis of the 6-month old sample yielded some important agarwood compounds such as benzylacetone,anisylacetone,guaiene and palustrol.This demonstrates that the tested fungi have the ability to induce agarwood formation in nursery A.malaccensis trees. | Rozi MOHAMED Phai Lee JONG Abd Kudus KAMZIAH | 2014 | Journal of Forestry Research2014,25,1: | 9 |
| 2 | An autoregressive integrated moving average model for short-term prediction of hepatitis C virus seropositivity among male volunteer blood donors in Karachi,Pakistan显示文摘AIM:To identify the stochastic autoregressive integrated moving average(ARIMA)model for short term forecasting of hepatitis C virus(HCV)seropositivity among volunteer blood donors in Karachi,Pakistan.METHODS:Ninety-six months(1998-2005)data on HCV seropositive cases(1000 -1 ×month -1)among male volunteer blood donors tested at four major blood banks in Karachi,Pakistan were subjected to ARIMA modeling.Subsequently,a fitted ARIMA model was used to forecast HCV seropositive donors for 91-96 mo to contrast with observed series of the same months.To assess the forecast accuracy,the mean absolute error rate(%)between the observed and predicted HCV seroprevalence was calculated.Finally,a fitted ARIMA model was used for short-term forecasts beyond the observed series.RESULTS:The goodness-of-fit test of the optimum A R I M A(2,1,7)model showed non-significant autocorrelations in the residuals of the model.The forecasts by ARIMA for 91-96 mo closely followed the pattern of observed series for the same months,with mean monthly absolute forecast errors(%)over 6 mo of 6.5%.The short-term forecasts beyond the observed series adequately captured the pattern in the data and showed increasing tendency of HCV seropositivity with a mean±SD HCV seroprevalence(1000-1×month-1) of 24.3±1.4 over the forecast interval.CONCLUSION:To curtail HCV spread,public health authorities need to educate communities and health care providers about HCV transmission routes based on known HCV epidemiology in Pakistan and its neighboring countries.Future research may focus on factors associated with hyperendemic levels of HCV infection. | Saeed Akhtar Shafquat Rozi | 2009 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,13: | 9 |
| 3 | Association of serum lipoprotein(a) level with the severity and prognosis of calcific aortic valve stenosis: a Chinese cohort study显示文摘Background There was a causal relationship between elevated lipoprotein(a)[Lp(a)]levels and increased risk of calcific aortic valve stenosis(CAVS)in whites and blacks.The present study aimed to investigate whether Lp(a)levels were associated with aortic stenosis(AS)severity and clinical events in Chinese patients.Methods Levels of serum Lp(a)were measured in 652 patients with CAVS,whom all underwent baseline echocardiographic examination.The clinical endpoint was defined as a composite of aortic valve replacement(AVR)and cardiac death.Results Patients in the tertile 3 of Lp(a)had a higher percentage of severe AS compared with those in the tertile 1 and 2 of Lp(a)(46.2%vs.33.9%,P=0.005).Moreover,the top tertile of Lp(a)was an independent predictor of severe AS(OR=1.78,95%CI:1.18-2.66,P=0.006).However,there was no significant association between tertile 3 of Lp(a)and clinical events(hazard ratio:0.73;95%CI:0.43-1.24;P=0.239)in the multivariate Cox regression analysis during a mean follow-up time of 3.16±2.74 years.Conclusions Elevated Lp(a)level was an independent predictor of severe AS by echocardiography in the Chinese population,but was not associated with the increased risk of AVR and cardiac death,suggesting that Lp(a)levels might be helpful in the risk stratification of patients with CAVS. | Shuo-Lin LIU Rynat Rozi Hui-Wei SHI Ying GAO Yuan-Lin GUO Yi-Da TANG Jian-Jun LI Na-Qiong WU | 2020 | Journal of Geriatric Cardiology2020,17,3: | 6 |
| 4 | History and perspectives of induction technology for agarwood production from cultivated Aquilaria in Asia: a review显示文摘Agarwood, the resinous product of Aquilaria spp.(Thymelaeaceae), is highly valued for medicinal and fragrant purposes. Unsustainable forest harvesting contributes to the declining population in the wild, threatening their existence. As a protection effort, cultivation occurred in range countries, mainly in Asia, effectively establishing mass plantations. The success of domesticating Aquilaria relies heavily on technological advancement in agarwood induction, without which the entire thriving industry will collapse. In this paper, we describe efforts since 1929 and current progress and variation in induction as practiced in Asia. The methods include traditional practices and artificial induction via inoculum and chemical inducer, experimented and patented or otherwise. Artificial induction methods are being developed to intensify agarwood production in terms of yield and quality. While traditional methods are commonly applied by rural planters, artificial methods with the use of specific agents/chemicals are seen as more appealing for inducing agarwood, and have a higher demand from entrepreneurs and plantation owners.Several issues related to induction technology faced by stakeholders in agarwood cultivation are presented, such as safety levels, cost, yields, and quality. | 5 | Effects of plant growth regulators, carbon sources and pH values on callus induction in Aquilaria malaccensis leaf explants and characteristics of the resultant calli显示文摘The endangered tropical tree, Aquilaria malaccensis, produces agarwood for use in fragrance and medicines. Efforts are currently underway to produce valuable agarwood compoundsn tissue culture. The purpose of this study was to develop an optimal growth medium, specifically, the best hormone combination for callus suspension culture. Using nursery-grown A. malaccensis, sterilized leaf explants were first incubated on basic Murashige and Skoog(MS) gel medium containing 15g/L sucrose and at pH 5.7. Different auxin types including 1-naphthaleneacetic acid(NAA), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2,4-D), and indole-3-butyric acid(IBA), were tested at various concentrations(0.55, 1.1 and 1.65 μM) using the basic medium. Leaf explants were incubated for 30 days in the dark. Callus induced by 1.1 μM NAA had the highest biomass dry weight(DW) of 17.3 mg; however the callus was of a compact type. This auxin concentration was then combined with either 6-benzylaminopurine(BAP) or kinetin at 0.55, 1.1, 2.2 or 3.3 μM to induce growth of friable callus. The 1.1μM NAA + 2.2μM BAP combination produced friable callus with the highest biomass(93.3mg DW). When testing the different carbon sources and pHs, sucrose at 15g/L and pH at 5.7 yielded highest biomasses at 87.7mg and 83 mg DW, respectively. Microscopic observations revealed the arrangement of the friable cells as loosely packed with relatively large cells, while for the compact callus, the cells were small and densely packed.
